Runway Military Blimp's Ruins Flown Away

The remains of a nearly quarter-billion dollar military blimp that broke free from a Maryland Army base and drifted across Pennsylvania knocking down power lines before crashing into woods have been carted away.

A Pennsylvania National Guard Chinook helicopter lifted pieces of the white dirigible, named JLENS, in a net to a field in Muncy, Pennsylvania Saturday morning. The blimp's remains were then loaded onto Army vehicles and taken away. Its final destination has yet to be determined.

The 240-foot-long helium-filled blimp broke free from its mooring at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Aberdeen, Maryland on Wednesday and floated north into Pennsylvania for three hours. A long cable dragged by the airship left damage its wake — taking down power lines and damaging property. Electricity was knocked out to 27,000 customers.

The blimp finally broke into two pieces as it crashed into trees in Muncy — which is near Bloomsburg University. National Guardsmen and state police were forced to shoot holes in the airship to release remaining helium.

The $235 million blimp — officially called a Joint Land Attack Cruise Missile Defense Elevated Netted Sensor System — was developed as an elaborate radar system meant to detect missiles and enemy aircraft. It cannot be steered remotely. The military removed the radar equipment from the wreckage on Friday.

The Army has begun accepting damage claims from those affected by the runaway craft. Officials are looking into how the blimp broke free.

A trapezist who plunged three stories into the audience at a Philadelphia circus performance Saturday night is expected to make a full recovery.

The performer, Chenglong Wu, 19, remained hospitalized in stable condition on Sunday. Wu was performing a 4 p.m. show for the UniverSoul Circus near the Mann Center for the Performing Arts in West Philadelphia's Parkside section when his high-flying stunt went awry.

Wu's act includes midair flips and jumps, video posted to the circus' website shows.

Witnesses posting to social media Saturday said Wu fell 30 feet into a safety net after a partner failed to catch him during a stunt. Wu then bounced out of the net and into the first row of the crowd.

Rosie Amor and her young daughter were sitting in the section next to where Wu landed. She said it appeared Wu tried to hold onto the net, but the force of the fall pulled him out.

"The sound of him falling to the ground made my stomach hurt," she said. "It was horrifying. All the children were watching."

Wu suffered a lower back injury and was taken by ambulance to nearby Penn Presbyterian Trauma Center.

There were no injuries in the audience.

Several people got up and left the show, according to Amor. The show resumed about 10 minutes after Wu was taken out.

"I felt like at that point they should have canceled the show," she said. "It's like they scraped him up from the ground and kept going with the show."

The circus, which features animal acts, acrobatics and pyrotechnic stunts, had three performances scheduled for Saturday. The accident happened during the second show. It is scheduled to be in Philadelphia through Nov. 15, but it was unclear on Sunday whether performances would continue immediately as scheduled.

Police and the circus continued to investigate the incident.

A woman is dead after a three-alarm fire tore through a Montgomery County apartment complex overnight.

Authorities in Plymouth Township confirmed Sunday morning that a woman's body was found in a burned apartment where the massive blaze was believed to have started. She was not yet identified later Sunday morning, but officials said she is believed to be in her 40s.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Sunday morning, but authorities said it did not appear suspicious.

The fire erupted at the Plymouth Rock Apartments, on Sandy Hill Road near Germantown Pike, shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday, according to officials. Firefighters battled the flames for more than two hours before the fire was finally brought under control at 12:38 a.m.

The fire forced nearly 30 people out of their homes. Fire officials told NBC10's Monique Braxton that fighting the blaze was particularly challenging because of the design of the apartments and breaches in the firewall. A fire hydrant nearby was damaged, so crews had to run long hoses to bring water to the complex, officials said.

Several apartments had extensive fire, water and smoke damage Sunday morning. The Fire Marshal was at the scene investigating to determine what caused the blaze.

The Red Cross responded to help displaced residents. The Red Paw Relief Team helped two cats and a dog displaced by the fire and continued to search for one missing pet Sunday morning, according to its Twitter account.

Needles Found in Pieces of Halloween Candy: Police

Local authorities are urging parents to carefully check their children's Halloween candy after what appear to be sewing needles were found in a half-dozen chocolate bars given out to trick-or-treating children in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

Police in Kennett Square said they were notified about midnight Sunday that Halloween candy handed out in the borough's Stenning Hills section had been tampered with. Needles were discovered inside five wrapped Twix bars handed out to four different children in the area, police said.

Sunday afternoon, a 12-year-old turned in sixth candy bar — a Snickers — with a needle in it, police said.

Police believe the tampered-with candy was given out in the area of South Union Street and West South Street. They said the original parent who reported finding the needles checked his kids' candy after seeing a Facebook post about someone else finding needles in Snickers candy. It's not clear if that post was about the Snickers the 12-year-old turned in Sunday afternoon.

The Kennett Square Police Department first alerted the community via its Facebook page on Sunday morning to the candy that had apparently been tampered with, saying that a "needle-type item was found inside five wrapped Twix bars given to four different children the evening of Oct. 31, 2015 in the Stenning Hills area of the borough."

Police said they immediately began investigating and that the candy and wrappers have been submitted for extra examination. They later released photos of the candy in question showing needles sticking out of the chocolate bars.

"The police department continues to urge parents to check all candy received prior to ingestion, and people with candy leftover that was not distributed to check it for tampering," the post on the police department's Facebook page read.

Police said they were unsure whether the problems with the candy originated at the manufacturer or if someone giving candy out inserted the needles.

Police asked that anyone with information about candy tampering contact them at 610-268-3171 or 610-444-0501.

Police are looking for a man decked out in Notre Dame gear who they say nearly struck someone with his truck outside Lincoln Financial Field Saturday night before the Temple-Notre Dame game, and then punched the man in the face when confronted about it.

Police said officers were called to Lot G1 at the sports complex about 8:10 p.m. for a person screaming. When they got to the lot, they found the victim, a 33-year-old man, and four witnesses who said another man driving a white Ford pickup truck had almost struck the victim. The man confronted the truck's driver, police said, and the driver -- who wore a white long-sleeve Notre Dame T-shirt -- got out of the truck and punched him in the face, knocking him to the ground.

The victim was knocked unconscious by the blow, police said. He was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in stable condition.

Police described the man who threw the punch as a white man about 5 feet 10, with a muscular build, who wore a long-sleeve white Notre Dame T-shirt. They said he was driving a white Ford F-250 Super Duty Truck with Delaware tags at the time of the confrontation.

Tipsters should contact police at 215-686-TIPS (8477) or text a tip to PPD TIP (773847).

A woman who police were concerned may have been abducted after she was seen being dragged into a minivan at a West Philadelphia gas station has been located safe.

The woman had just walked out of the convenience store at the Sunoco at 52nd and Spruce streets around 10:30 p.m. when she was grabbed by a man, police said.

Detectives released her photo to the public Sunday afternoon with hopes of identifying her and determining what led to the scuffle.

A short time after the pictures were released, the woman was found. Investigators said the she was having trouble dealing with a family tragedy and had previously jumped out of another vehicle while driving down the street.

The men grabbing her were family members trying to get her to come home.

Men Fire 17 Shots at Teens Riding Bicycles, Killing 1

A 16-year-old boy died after two men fired more than one dozen shots at him and his friend as they rode their bicycles down a North Philadelphia street, police said.

Saleem West and his 15-year-old friend were riding down the 2200 block of West Sedgley Avenue around 4:45 p.m. Sunday when they came upon four men sitting in a parked silver Buick with tinted windows.

Capt. Nicholas Brown of the 22nd District said the boys had an interaction with the men earlier in the afternoon and when they realized the same car was in their path, they tried to turn around. Just then, Brown said, two men then jumped out of the Buick, began chasing them and opened fire.

The men unloaded 17 shots at the boys, according to Brown. One bullet hit Saleem in the back. He was rushed to Temple University Hospital where he died a short time later.

The men fled the scene and are still on the loose. The surviving teen told police he had never seen them before Sunday. Both boys grew up together in the neighborhood, Brown said.

A motive has yet to be determined, but Brown said investigators haven't ruled out road rage.

"That is an awful lot of shots to fire at two kids, especially if this was possibly road rage," he said.

Pastor Elbert Jordan was inside his nearby church with congregants when the shooting happened. He said violence in the neighborhood has gotten worse recently. Police stats show there have been more than two dozen shootings in the neighborhood over the past few weeks.

Jordan also said he wouldn't be surprised if road rage was at play. "When people see straight road, they just ride like they're crazy so there is a lot of road rage, there is a lot of that down here," he said.
