Halloween Crash Victims Mourned: A large crowd of mourners assembled Sunday night at a Bronx street corner for a candlelight vigil for the three victims killed there by a careening car on Halloween. Natalia Perez grieved the deaths of her 10-year-old daughter and her 65-year-old father. "She was the perfect child. She never gave me any problems. She was like an angel," Perez said of her daughter, Nyanna Aquil, who was struck shortly before 5 p.m. when the vehicle plowed into a small group of Halloween trick-or-treaters at the intersection of Morris Park and Radcliff avenues. Nyanna was in the group with her two sisters and her grandfather, Louis Perez, who had taken the girls out near their home for a second round of trick-or-treating while their mother, a makeup artist, was at work. Louis Perez was killed while pushing 8-year-old Sanaya Aquil out of harm's way. The youngest sister, 3-year-old Yasmina Aquil, was thrown from her stroller and suffered a minor neck injury along with bumps and bruises. Nyanna was not able to escape the path of the car, which bumped the rear of another vehicle and crossed into the oncoming lane before launching onto the sidewalk. She was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center, where doctors operated on her, but she died of internal bleeding, her mother said. Another person caught up in the crash, 24-year-old Kristian Leka, also died at Jacobi Medical Center. Investigators were looking into the possibility that the car's driver had suffered a seizure, police said Sunday.

Jury Selection in Stepdad Necrophilia Case

Jury selection gets underway Monday in the case of a Pennsylvania man accused of killing his stepdaughter then recording himself having sex with the corpse.

Days before jury selection began, prosecutors fought to keep Gregory Graf from using his mental state to defend himself against criminal homicide and abuse of a corpse charges in Northampton county.

The five-day search for Jessica Padgett, a mother of three and newlywed from Northampton County, Pennsylvania, came to a stunning end the day before Thanksgiving last year when investigators found her body in a shallow grave on the property where Graf lived with Padgett’s mother.

District Attorney John Morganelli asked the judge to prohibit any expert testimony during the trial from a psychologist the defense hired to evaluate Graf. The defense missed a deadline to disclose the findings of their psychiatric evaluation. Without that information, Morganelli argued, he’s left with little time to determine if he needs his own expert to mentally evaluate Graf.

Prominent Philadelphia attorney Jack McMahon is expected to use Graf’s mental state to defend him when arguments in Graf’s trial begin next week.

"We can’t be surprised on the eve of the trial," Morganelli told The Morning Call.

Padgett, who was 33, was last seen Nov. 21 when she left her job at a day care to run an errand and went to Graf's place to fax some papers. Graf, 54, admitted to shooting Jessica in his home, according to Morganelli. After violating her corpse, prosecutors allege Graf buried Padgett's body behind a shed in his yard.

While she was missing, Jessica’s family and friends set up a "Help Find Jessica Padgett" page on Facebook. More than 8,000 people joined the group and have since helped raise more than $20,000 to help support Padgett’s children.

Copycat Claims to Find Needles in Halloween Candy: Police

Police in South Jersey went to man’s home Sunday after he posted photos of a needle in Halloween candy to Facebook and told police about the tampering.

Gloucester Township police, however, quickly realized the report of tampered trick-or-treating goodies was a farce and wound up arresting 37-year-old Robert Ledrew.

The Blackwood resident faces a charge of filing a false police report after he claimed to find four sewing needles in separate pieces of candy, said investigators.

The incident appeared to be a copycat situation after sewing needles and pins were found in a half-dozen chocolate bars given out to trick-or-treating children in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, said police.

Police booked and released Ledrew ahead of a future court date.

Crash Leaves SEPTA Bus Across Street

An accordion SEPTA bus and a tractor-trailer crashed in Northeast Philadelphia Monday afternoon, leaving the bus jackknifed across a major thoroughfare and several people hurt.

The crash happened on the 7900 block of Oxford Avenue, near Rhawn Street, in the city's Fox Chase neighborhood, about 12:30 p.m. SEPTA officials said based on a preliminary investigation, it appears that the Route 18 bus had just pulled out of the Fox Chase Loop on Oxford Avenue when the crash occurred. Officials said the driver and two passengers were on the bus at the time.

"When I went around I saw the impact and saw how bad the window was busted out and the driver screaming from the bus," said Chris Burgos. "I jumped out and went into the front of the bus to see if everybody was alright. There was an older lady on the floor and a middle-aged woman who was in the middle of the bus. She was on the floor."

All three on-board were taken to Aria Health's Torresdale hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. There was no word on any other injuries in the crash about 2 p.m.

Witnesses at the scene of the crash told NBC10's Lauren Mayk that the tractor-trailer, which was carrying heavy construction equipment, had a police escort, but that the crash occurred behind the escort. A police motorcycle could be seen in SkyForce10 video of the crash scene.

The wreck snarled traffic along Oxford Avenue and surrounding streets. Oxford Avenue remains closed hours after the accident.

The SEPTA bus blocked all lanes of traffic and wound up on the sidewalk on both sides of the avenue. The front of the truck wound up into the Blooming Artist Studio next to an Allstate insurance agency.

"I was sitting like right in the middle painting and I heard this terrible crash," said Nora McCloskey, who was inside the Studio at the time of the accident. "I looked up and saw a truck at my window. The worst part was when I came out. A woman was screaming. I was so lucky that it didn't swing over to the right because that's where I was."

The truck appeared to hauling a large piece of construction machinery that became detached during the wreck.

The cause of the wreck remained under investigation Monday.

17 to 34 Years in Deadly Street Racing Crash

A 24-year-old man who plowed into a young mother and her three sons while street racing on Roosevelt Boulevard in summer 2013, killing all four of them, will spend 17 to 34 years in prison, a Philadelphia judge ruled Monday.

Khusen Akhmedov, of Lancaster, was found guilty in a non-jury trial of third-degree murder in July. He was accused of street racing 32-year-old Ahmen Holloman on Roosevelt Boulevard near 2nd Street, in Olney, as Banks and her four boys were crossing the road that fateful July 2013 night. Akhmedov's Audi plowed into the family, killing Banks and three of her sons, ages 4, 1 and 7 months. Her 5-year-old son survived.

Police at the time said Banks was thrown some 200 feet from where the car struck her.

Michael Diamondstein, Akhmedov's attorney, argued that the evidence didn't show the malice necessary to support a third-degree murder conviction. But Judge Steven R. Geroff disagreed, finding the young man guilty. Akhmedov will spend 17 to 34 years in prison for the deadly crash.

Holloman, the other street racer involved that night, pleaded guilty in July to vehicular homicide and was sentenced to five to 10 years in prison.

A traffic light has since been installed at the crosswalk where Banks and her sons were crossing that night -- which did not have a stoplight before. The crossing was named Banks Way after the crash.

Trapeze Artist Leaves Hospital After 'Horrifying' 30-Foot Fall

A trapeze artist who plunged three stories into the audience at a Philadelphia circus performance over the weekend left the hospital Monday and is expected to make a full recovery.

The performer, Chenglong Wu, 19, was performing at 4 p.m. Saturday for the UniverSoul Circus near the Mann Center for the Performing Arts in West Philadelphia's Parkside section when his high-flying stunt went awry.

Wu's act includes midair flips and jumps, video posted to the circus' website shows.

Witnesses posting to social media Saturday said Wu fell 30 feet into a safety net after a partner failed to catch him during a stunt. Wu then bounced out of the net and into the first row of the crowd.

Rosie Amor and her young daughter were sitting in the section next to where Wu landed. She said it appeared Wu tried to hold onto the net, but the force of the fall pulled him out.

"The sound of him falling to the ground made my stomach hurt," she said. "It was horrifying. All the children were watching."

Wu suffered a lower back injury and was taken by ambulance to nearby Penn Presbyterian Trauma Center.

There were no injuries in the audience.

Several people got up and left the show, according to Amor. The show resumed about 10 minutes after Wu was taken out.

"I felt like at that point they should have canceled the show," she said. "It's like they scraped him up from the ground and kept going with the show."

A spokesperson for UniverSoul Circus announced Monday that Wu was released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

"UniverSoul Circus would like to thank the first responders and circus staff who took charge of the situation and saw to it that Chenglong was treated as expeditiously as possible," the spokesperson wrote. "UniverSoul Circus also thanks the doctors, nurses and staff at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center for all of their hard work. UniverSoul Circus greatly appreciates our fans for their kind thoughts and prayers that have been pouring in on behalf of Chenglong."

The spokesperson also released a picture of Wu smiling and holding up the peace sign.

The circus, which features animal acts, acrobatics and pyrotechnic stunts, had three performances scheduled for Saturday. The accident happened during the second show. It is scheduled to be in Philadelphia through Nov. 15. Police and the circus continue to investigate the incident.

Excuses Answered Just In Time For Elections

$

0

Election time is here and many people are making up excuses for why they can’t, or don’t want to vote.

In efforts to stop the excuses, the Commitee of 70 has been providing information on everything dealing with elections for over 100 years in Philadelphia.

Never losing sight of the the mission when established  in 1904 "to keep watch and ward over the public interest." The CEO of the Committee of 70, David Thornburgh didn't hesitate to come up with solutions to the excuses for avoiding the polls.

NBC10 quizzed Thonrburgh with some of the top excuses:

I am extremely busy and I don’t have any time to vote, I simply can’t fit it into my schedule, what can I do?

“There are no good excuses; voting polls are open from 7am-8pm voting takes half the time it would take to eat lunch. People vote in less than a minute now days.”

I don’t like anybody that’s running, so why should I vote?

“It’s easy to find out more in this day in time than it has been in history, you can go to www.seventy.org, for information. You can ask somebody like a neighbor, a friend or someone who knows about the candidates. Don’t be intimidated. It’s ok to ask for help. It’s just like buying a car or house.”

I don’t know where to vote.

“Go to your state's public office, or start with your county. That’s where poll info should be. Or let Google do the work for you. You’ll find a lot of these states have poll locator websites.”

Here are some helpful links for our area:
Pennsylvania
Philadelphia
New Jersey
Delaware (there is no election in Delaware this year)

I don’t have a photo ID, so I can’t vote.

“You don’t need one, unless it’s your first time. But if you have any questions about your eligibility, you will be given a Provisional Ballot until everything gets sorted out.”

Why should I vote when I’m sure my vote won’t make a difference?

“Do you want people to pay attention to you or not? These candidates determine how the money is spent, taxes, how schools are ran, how public problems being solved, things like that. So your vote does matter.”

Now that all your questions and concerns have been answered, go out, vote and make a

difference.
