A mother and daughter drowned in the Delaware River near New Jersey's Bull's Island State Park Friday night after they fell from their kayak into the water, officials said Saturday.

Rescue crews were called for the two kayakers in distress at 8:16 p.m., and multiple police and fire agencies responded to the location in the water, which is just northwest of Stockton, N.J., according to Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns III.

At 8:29 p.m., rescuers pulled one of the women from the river, but were unable to revive her. The second victim was recovered later on the Pennsylvania side of the river, also dead, officials said.

The victims have been identified as Doris Rake, 45, and her daughter, Kathryn Haney, 19, of Raritan Township, about 12 miles northeast of Bull's Island.

"Apparently the pair were experienced kayakers and were not wearing personal flotation devices," Kearns said in a statement. "This is a terrible tragedy and our condolences go out to their friends and family."

Officials are searching for an entangled humpback whale that was spotted at the Jersey Shore.

The whale was spotted Friday afternoon about two miles east of Sandy Hook. The sighting was not immediately reported however according to Danielle Browne, a Field Stranding Technician with the Marine Mammal Stranding Center. Officials say they are unsure of the whale’s location.

The whale is dragging a yellow trap buoy and a yellow flag. Officials believe a rope is attached to its pectoral fin and the buoy is 20-feet back from its tail and can only be seen whenever the whale drives.

The Facebook group Gotham Whale posted photos of the entangled whale in hopes of getting the mammal help.

If you see the whale, do not approach it or try to remove the equipment. Instead report the sighting to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center at 609-266-0538 or NOAA at 1-866-755-6622.

A driver was killed by a falling tree in New Jersey Friday morning, according to authorities.

The 50-year-old woman was driving her Jeep Cherokee on Brookside Drive in Verona when a tree smashed into the vehicle, the prosecutor's office said.

The woman, identified as Susan E. Niler, was taken to Morristown Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, She was alone in her vehicle at the time, authorities said.

It's not clear what caused the tree to fall.

Earlier this month, a 21-year-old college student walking to her car outside her home in New Milford was killed when a tree split in half during a storm and struck her.

On Tuesday, a giant 200-year-old oak tree smashed into two vehicles parked in a driveway in Summit, about 13 miles south of Verona. The trunk of the tree appeared to be rotted in that case, and neighbors said it was a good reminder to check on the conditions of their trees as summer storms arrive.

A man died just minutes after getting a phone call asking him to come outside his Philadelphia home.

The yet-to-identified victim’s family members told police that he left his children off with a relative saying he got a call and needed to go out. Within five minutes a gunman shot the 29-year-old man five times in the torso along the 3400 block of Crowell Street in the city’s Hunting Park section, said investigators.

Someone flagged down officers patrolling the area around 11:15 p.m. Saturday and told them there was a body in the street. Officers then found the man dead not far from his home.

Witnesses told investigators that they saw someone running away before hopping into a gold van and fleeing the scene.

This wasn’t the only deadly shooting overnight. Early Sunday, a 35-year-old man was shot in the head at a playground along the 1200 block of S 30th Street in the city’s Grays Ferry section. Police found drugs at the homicide scene, said investigators.

Anyone with information on either shooting is asked to contact Philadelphia Police.
