Beware the Blob.

The Phoenixville Blobfest returns this weekend to celebrate the iconic 1958 movie "The Blob."

Parts of the movie were filmed in Phoenixville, including a popular scene that was filmed at the Colonial Theater.

Friday nights kick off event, "The Run Out", commemorates this famous scene. During the event, guests will flee an alien that crash lands in the theater at 9 p.m. just as characters do in the film.

Saturday's Streetfair will feature free live music, costume contests, food, and vendors. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet special guests such as Kris Yeaworth, son of "The Blob" director.

Saturday will also include a double feature showing of The Blob" as well as "The Creature from the Black Lagoon."

The festivities close out on Sunday, but not before a Q&A with legendary director, writer, and stuntman Ricou Browning at 1:30 p.m.

Tickets are the same price for all events: $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and students, and $6 for children 13 and under.

Dive Team Shows Quarry Swimming Dangers

Serene and picturesque, South Jersey quarries lure swimmers to calm waters that authorities say are deceptively dangerous.

Tethered to a rope, Devon Hausmann of the Hamilton Township Dive Team waded into the Pine Barrens quarry, often called The Blue Hole, in Winslow Township earlier this month — where no swimming signs are posted.

“It’s very warm, shallow and then out of nowhere…You just fall,” he said. “And the water temperature drops at least, 15, 20 degrees.”

Hausmann wore an underwater camera as another team member flew his drone over the water, to show why these old mines have claimed so many lives over the years.

Just last week, two 17-year-olds drowned in separate incidents in quarries in Gloucester and Ocean counties.

“You can have drop-offs to 40 feet, 60 feet,” Hausmann said.

Glenn Hausmann, another dive team member, said the sand around the holes can very easily collapse under a person’s weight. Unlike lakes, the quarry and others like it often do not become deeper gradually, but instead are riddled with cliffs that can kill.

There’s another danger. Many of these quarries are in remote areas with rugged terrain, inaccessible to emergency vehicles. So rescuers often have to walk long distances, carrying heavy equipment, just to get to the water.

“You’re 20, 30 minutes into a rescue easy…and nobody is going to be under water that long and survive,” Glenn Hausmann said.

Residents Beat Drunk Man After Suspecting He Offered Kids Cash

A man police said was drunk and allegedly approached two children and offered them money was severely beaten by residents of a South Philadelphia block after they believed he was trying to abduct the kids.

The barefoot middle-aged man walked up to 4- and 6-year-old cousins along the 2600 block of Beulah Street about 7:15 p.m. Friday. Police said he is believed to have offered the children cash to buy something at the corner store. Mayra Rodriguez, the mother of one of the girls, contends he was trying to hurt them.

"He was trying to give them money to try to lure them to him to take them," she told NBC10.

Residents watching the interaction came over and got into a fight with him, according to witnesses.

"He came over and asked me for a cigarette, and his face was all bloody, he had a big knot on his head," Joyce Givigliano said.

Moments later, Givigliano said two men and a woman came chasing after the man. They caught up to him at Beulah and Porter Streets and he was beaten again. Givigliano called police.

"I'm afraid they're gonna kill him," she said.

The man, who's identity NBC10 has concealed because he isn't charged with a crime, was left with a swollen and bloody face and cuts to his arms and legs. Paramedics led him to an ambulance so he could be taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Investigators are not yet sure whether the man had a nefarious purpose or if it was a misunderstanding. They're looking into the man's background and the case has been transferred to the Special Victims Unit.

Police said they expect to file charges in the case, but could not yet say against whom.

Narcotics Officers Acquitted of Corruption Charges Win Jobs Back

Six Philadelphia police officers who were acquitted of numerous federal corruption charges by a jury earlier this year have reportedly won their jobs back.

Narcotics officers Thomas Liciardello, Michael Spicer, John Speiser, Brian Reynolds, Perry Betts and Linwood Norman were first fired from the police department and arrested last summer, and faced a weeks-long federal trial before a jury found them not guilty on all charges in May. Mayoral spokesman Mark McDonald told the Philadelphia Inquirer the officers will receive $90,000 in back pay and get their original badges back.

McDonald told the newspaper that the officers, who had been assigned to the Narcotics Field Unit, will not be returned to posts in that unit, but will work mostly in districts. It was unclear exactly when the veteran policemen would be back on the job.

Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey, at the time of the officers' arrests, called the case of alleged corruption "one of the worst cases" he'd ever heard of and vowed to have their badges destroyed. The officers were accused of threatening, beating and stealing from drug suspects over a several-year span. Liciardello, who was accused of being the ringleader of the rogue squad, spent nearly a year in federal lockup before the acquittal.

The six were arrested after a fellow former narcotics officer, Jeffrey Walker, was caught by federal agents stealing money from a drug house and agreed to cooperate in the federal investigation into the squad and testify against the officers. Walker pleaded guilty in his own corruption case and is serving a federal sentence.

It was unclear what sparked the shooting, and police had not released information on a motive or suspect early Saturday.

SWAT, K9 and Aviation officers searched the immediate area for the gunman in the aftermath of the shooting.

Meanwhile, police are also looking for the person responsible for shooting a woman in the leg on a playground in Philly's Tacony section, at Disston and Gillespie streets. The woman was in stable condition Saturday morning.
