An 8-year-old boy landed in the hospital after fire broke out inside his North Philadelphia home overnight.

Philadelphia firefighters responded to a two-story home on the 2600 block of N 18th Street around 1:45 a.m.

Firefighters said they got the blaze under control in about 30 minutes but not before it spread to at least one other home.

A child suffered minor smoke inhalation and medics rushed the boy to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children for treatment.

The blaze remained under investigation Monday morning as the American Red Cross assisted three families displaced by the fire.

Caught on Cam: Store Owner Fights Violent Robber

A New Jersey jewelry store owner didn't back down when a robber brutally punched and beat him Tuesday night, instead fighting back in a fierce showdown captured on surveillance video.

Police said the suspect, Edgardo Cuevas, walked into Tony's Jewelers in Clifton pretending to be a customer and then when the 65-year-old owner, Tony Markar, turned his back, pounced.

Cuevas is seen on surveillance video lunging over the counter to snatch expensive jewelry, and then repeatedly punching Markar.

"He was intent on getting that jewelry one way or another at any expense," said Clifton Police Detective Sgt. Robert Bracken.

"Obviously from the video, it's very graphic, violent, startling," he said.

But Markar didn't back down, and he gave back as good as he got, the video shows.

"I think it was just a reaction," said Bracken. "He wasn't about to let anybody take anything from his store."

The face-off was so violent the two shattered the counter's glass. As a last-ditch effort, the alleged robber jumped on top of the counter and appeared to put the owner into a headlock as he grabbed for more jewelry.

The owner's wife, who had been Skyping with him, watched the terrifying scene play out from a computer screen in the back.

"He was in the middle of speaking with her, she was in another store in another town and she watched the whole incident occur," said Bracken.

The ordeal finally ended when the suspect ran from the store. Police were able to get a good enough look at the suspect and recognized an old mugshot of Cuevas from 2009. Cuevas was arrested in Clifton Thursday night.

Attorney information for Cuevas wasn't immediately available.

Death Toll in Nepal Soars as Rescuers Struggle to Reach Many: The death toll from Saturday's 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Nepal soared past 3,600 and aid agencies warned that it could skyrocket higher once rescuers make it to rural communities that thus far have been inaccessible. Vast tent cities have sprung up in Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, for those displaced or afraid to return to their homes as strong aftershocks continued through Sunday.

On Mount Everest — where an avalanche triggered by Saturday's quake killed at least 18 people — climbers reported further avalanches. Relief agencies and officials said most hospitals were overflowing and short on medical supplies, but little sign of organized relief efforts was visible as aid agencies struggled to fly helicopters in cloudy weather, aftershocks forced the intermittent closure of Kathmandu airport and roads were blocked by landslides.

Deadly, Fiery Big Rig, Tanker Crash in Montco

A tractor-trailer carrying cosmetic powder and a tanker truck carrying raw sewage burst into flames after colliding head-on along a Montgomery County road leaving one driver dead.

The deadly explosive wreck closed S Park Avenue near Crawford Road in Audubon, Pennsylvania shortly before 6 a.m., said county dispatchers.

"I jumped up out of bed and just tried offering help wherever we could," said neighbor Ray Ross.

The impact badly damaged the tanker truck cab, causing the driver to become trapped. The driver died in the wreck, said police. The semi-truck driver escaped uninjured.

Investigators said that the Aqua Pennsylvania tanker carried sewage while the tractor-trailer carried barrels of a white powder used in makeup.

"It was observed that the two tractor-trailer had collided in a head-on matter, causing one of the trailers to split open and discharging containers containing a white powder onto the roadway," said Lower Providence Township Police Chief Francis Carroll.

As SkyForce10 hovered over the crash scene, a white substance could be seen covering the vehicles and roadway. Dozens of barrels could be seen on the roadway.

Ross said neighbors put out a small fire on one of the lawns by using a garden hose before firefighters showed up. Firefighters then used dry powder and water to extinguish the blaze, said Carroll.

"We have a significant amount of dry powder on the roadway," he said.

No raw sewage leaked and crews were able to load the sewage onto another truck and take it to a nearby treatment plant, said police.

Hazmat crews were called in out of caution despite the white powder being deemed non-hazardous, said police. No nearby homes were evacuated.

Expect delays in the area as crews work to clean up the mess and investigators from the township and county try to determine what caused the crash.

Carroll warned there could also be damage to the roadway and that the clean-up effort and investigation could take until evening, if not longer.

Prison Guard Gets $100 a Delivery to Smuggle Drugs: Prosecutors

$

0

Prosecutors in suburban Philadelphia said a “corrupted” prison guard received $100 a delivery to get drugs, including heroin and prescriptions drugs, including Xanax, to convicted felons.

"As a result of his greed, this correctional officer is going from guarding inmates to being an inmate, said Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan.

Hogan announced the arrest Monday of Chester County Prison correctional officer Douglas Keck.

Keck, 45, began working at the county prison last September. Keck would get drugs to “middle man” Ray Gibase who would then distribute the drugs to other inmates, said prosecutors. Keck allegedly got $100 per delivery.

A group of inmates in H Block – where Keck worked -- and people outside prison teamed up to funnel the drugs through Keck and Gibase on at least five occasions between February and March. Fellow inmate Victor Rodriguez would help coordinate the purchase of drugs through his fiancé Ivelise Rodriguez, said prosecutors.

Among the inmates accused of receiving drugs in prison are Richard Nicoletti, 38, and Steven Wambold, 24.

Nicoletti’s friend Vladislav Babayan, 30 of Bristol, Pennsylvania allegedly used Keck to get drugs to Nicoletti. Wambold’s girlfriend Brittany Pestcoe, 21, of Douglassville, Pennsylvania used her job at CVS to steal drugs from the pharmacy that she then allegedly gave to Keck for delivery, said Hogan.

A deal on March 23 became the scheme’s undoing, said investigators. In that instance, Pestcoe could be seen delivering money and drugs to Keck outside a North Conventry Wawa. A county detective approached Keck and the prison guard turned over the contraband, said investigators.

Keck had his 4-year-old son with him at the Wawa deal, said investigators.

"This case is another reminder of the dangers of these powerful narcotic drugs," said District Attorney Thomas Hogan. "Even in prison, inmates cannot break their addiction. As a result, a correctional officer was corrupted, betraying his co-workers for a little money from convicted criminals."

Keck and the other defendants face a slew of drugs charges. Keck also faces a count of child endangerment.

Keck had no comment as he was led to a waiting police car after being arraigned Monday outside of muttering he "had a lot of regrets."

A former employee of a Main Line Hebrew academy went into the school and stabbed another employee as class got underway Monday morning, according to Radnor Twp. Police Superintendent Bill Colarulo.

The suspect, an ex-kitchen employee at the Jack Barrack Hebrew Academy on South Bryn Mawr Ave., stabbed a current kitchen employee in the head and neck before throwing bleach on the victim, police said.

Following the stabbing, the man ran from the campus and hopped on a SEPTA train at the Haverford station. SEPTA officials stopped the train and the suspect was taken into custody, according to authorities.

The victim was transported to a local hospital for hand wounds.

"As a precautionary measure, our school immediately followed our lock down procedure and at no time was any student or employee in any danger," said Head of School Sharon P. Levin on the academy's Facebook page.

This is the second time township police were called to the school in the last six months. In Nov. 2014, someone brought a bag of ammunition into the academy.

No one was hurt in that incident.

Barrack Hebrew Academy serves student in grades 6 to 12 on its 35-acre campus. The school opened in 1946 as Akiba Hebrew Academy and is the oldest pluralistic, coeducational Jewish day school in North America, according to the school’s website.

World Meeting of Families leaders made a major announcement Monday for people looking to volunteer during Pope Francis’ visit to Philadelphia later this year.

Monday during the announcement at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, WMOF executive director Donna Farrell and the others launched online volunteer registration for anyone wanting to give their time during the event from Sept. 22 to 27.

"The single most frequently asked question we receive is 'How can I help?'" said Farrell. "With today's official launch of the World Meeting of Families Volunteer Registration Site, we can finally and happily say volunteer."

The event, which will include a Papal visit during the weekend, is expected to bring millions of people to Philadelphia. About 10,000 volunteers are needed, said organizers.

All volunteers must be at least 18 years old and the volunteer process will go through Verified Volunteers. Each volunteer is subjected to a background check and it will take 24 to 48 hours to find out if you've been approved.

Once approved, volunteers will need to participate in formal training programs, said organizers.

The process is free -- organizers, however, suggested an optional $28 donation to offset some costs.

Two Philadelphia teens are facing charges in the shooting death of a Chinese food deliveryman last week, police confirmed Monday afternoon.

Fourteen-year-old Sahmir Walker was charged with the murder and robbery of Rendon Zheng while a second teen, Tyquail Duffy, 15, was charged with aggravated assault, terroristic threats and other related offenses.

The charges were announced just hours after police confirmed the teens were in custody for questioning.

Zheng, of N. 10th Street. was making a delivery on the 500 block of Hill Creek Park Drive for New China Chinese around 10:30 p.m. Thursday when an assailant fired at least 12 shots, hitting the 49-year-old Zheng in the left shoulder, police said.

The victim tried to speed away, crossing Adams Avenue, near Bingham Street, but ended up crashing through a fence at the top of an embankment, authorities said.

When medics arrived at the crash scene, they found the driver unconscious in his car and rushed him to Albert Einstein Medical Center where he died minutes later.

Police confirmed Monday that the motive for the crime was robbery, although nothing was taken from the victim.

A 20,000 reward was offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Zheng's killer. Anyone with information is urged to contact Philadelphia Police.

That's Not a Sheriff Asking About Jury Duty

Philadelphia officials warned city residents of a phone scheme falsely representing the Sheriff's Office in order to collect money for missed jury duty or failure to repay fines.

Officials said the alleged schemers call people threatening to arrest or fine them because they owe debt to a quick loan organization or have missed jury duty.

The Sheriff’s Office cautions residents that officials never call to collect money and only serve court-executed warrants in such cases.

“I need to make it absolutely clear,” Sheriff Jewell Williams said. “We never call anyone about a debt. We serve a court-executed warrant”.

Many residents from Philadelphia’s 4th district have already reported receiving these fraudulent calls, Councilman Curtis Jones said.

Anyone who suspects being targeted by the scheme is asked to call the Philadelphia Sheriff's Office at 215-686-3530 or the Jury Commission Office at 215-683-7190.

Girl Battling Cancer Dreams of Meeting Taylor Swift

A 12-year-old Chicago girl who may be nearing the end of her battle with cancer has inspired an entire neighborhood to help.

Emily Beazley suffers from a form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that's so aggressive, doctors told the family there's nothing more they can do.

One of Emily’s dreams is to meet her idol, Taylor Swift, so "Emily’s entourage" created a music video to get the attention of the superstar and hopefully make Emily’s dream come true.

Hundreds of Emily’s friends took part in their own rendition of Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off” in Chicago’s Merrionette Park on Sunday.

Maggie Earner, a supporter of Emily’s, said the idea came from her 5-year-old daughter, Avery.

“She came downstairs and said, ‘Mom, I can't sleep. I’ve been thinking about Emily and I really want her to meet Taylor Swift. What if we got all the kids in the neighborhood together and danced to Shake it Off?’” Earner said.

Hundreds donned Emily’s favorite colors of purple and green to shoot the music video called "Shake it Off Emily Beazley,” complete with choreography.

“I think she's going to feel heartbroken because someone in sixth grade should not have cancer,” said Emily’s friend Brooke Dilger.

When the video is released, the young members of Emily’s entourage plan to turn to the Internet and to the public, who they hope will be listening closely.

New Attorney for Wrong-Way Officer

A lawyer for the New Jersey police officer who law enforcement sources say had a blood alcohol content three times the legal limit when he hit a tractor-trailer head-on on a Staten Island highway last month, killing a fellow officer and a friend and critically injuring a third cop, says his client is in the process of hiring a new attorney and offered no comment on the case.

The NYPD, which is investigating the March 20 wrong-way crash on the West Shore Expressway, also had no comment on the toxicology results of Pedro Abad Jr., which showed a blood alcohol level of .24 percent, according to sources familiar with the case.

Abad, 27, was driving his fellow officers and friend on the wrong side of the expressway on the way back from a strip club when his vehicle slammed into the tractor-trailer, authorities said.

Hours before the crash, Abad had posted a photo on his Instagram page of three shot glasses filled with what he identified as "Jack Daniels Fire on the house."

Authorities said at the time it was "too premature" to speculate on what caused the accident. They later obtained a warrant to test Abad's blood.

Abad was hospitalized in critical condition following the crash, which killed fellow Linden officer Frank Viggiano and friend Joseph Rodriguez. Patrik Kudlac, another Linden cop riding in Abad's Honda, was also hospitalized in critical condition after the crash.

The Union County prosecutor's office has said it would hand off the probe into the driving record and employment history of Abad to avoid the perception of any conflicts of interest. The state attorney general's office said the investigation will be handled by the Middlesex County prosecutor's office.

Public records show Abad has been involved in eight accidents since 2005 and has two arrests for drunken driving in the last four years.

Blue Cross Broad Street Run Forecast

$

0

With the Blue Cross Broad Street Run just days away, the weather is top of mind as runners and spectators make final preparations for the 10-mile dash down Broad Street.

So what is in store for Sunday morning as far as wind, possible rainfall and temperature?

First off, the chance for rain is low. And with plenty of sun (a UV Index of 7 out of 10) sunscreen will be a good idea.

"The good news is, we expect to be dry through the weekend with temperatures a little above normal for this time of year," said NBC10 meteorologist Sheena Parveen.

The high Sunday is expected to top out in the mid 70s but that is only in the afternoon. When the race starts at 8 a.m. there should be sunshine with temps quickly rising from a morning low near 50.

Race day lows in the 50s are on par with many past races.

Wind could play a factor in the run with a cross to tail wind of 10 mph that should give a gentle push to runners as they head south.

Check back throughout the week as the NBC10 First Alert Weather Team tracks your race day forecast.
