Police arrested two teen girls accused of robbing two cab drivers, a mother and daughter visiting their family from Ecuador, and a Domino's Pizza.

Kemonie McKee, 16, of Philadelphia and Synia Martinez, 15, were both arrested and charged with armed robbery.

Police say the girls first targeted a cab driver on June 19 shortly before 9:30 p.m. The teens called the cab driver to the 100 block of Glendale Road in Upper Darby, according to investigators. When he arrived, one of the girls began talking to him to distract him while the second girl pulled out a gun and aimed it at his head, police said. They then allegedly stole the cab driver's phone and $100.

About two hours later the girls called another cab driver to the 200 block of Copley Road in Upper Darby and used the same method to rob him once he arrived, investigators said. The teens allegedly stole $80 in cash during the second incident. The cab drivers were not hurt in either incident.

"Cab driver arrives, starts a conversation, next thing you know he's got a gun to his head," Chitwood said.

On June 21, the girls robbed a Domino's Pizza on the 6400 block of Race Street in Southwest Philadelphia, police said. A surveillance photo of one of the suspects during that robbery was obtained by NBC10.

On June 23, the two girls allegedly robbed a mother and daughter from Ecuador who were visiting their family in Upper Darby. Martha Chacon, 52, and her mother Maria Cardenas, 86, said they were both leaving their family members' home on Kent Road at 9:40 a.m. when they were approached by the two girls.

"She came up close to me, got really close and put the gun right here," Chacon said.

The girls allegedly shoved Chacon in the chest and took her purse which contained $200. They then struggled with Cardenas before hitting her in the arm with a gun and taking her purse which contained $700 and other items, according to police.

"I didn't want to let go," Cardenas said. "I grabbed my little purse with two hands. I had money, my watch, some other little things. They even took my denture that was inside."

After robbing the mother and daughter, the teen girls left the scene in a dark gray Hyundai Sonata which was captured on surveillance video, police said. Police say a third suspect was driving the getaway vehicle.

On Sunday, McKee surrendered to Upper Darby Police while Martinez was taken into custody by Philadelphia Police Tuesday. Both teen girls are being charged as adults.

Police also say two anonymous people donated $1000 each to Chacon and Cardenas.

'Hurricane' Schwartz: Sea Level Rise Means Big Trouble Ahead

$

WHY MILLIMETERS (AND INCHES) MATTER

In case you’ve never seen pictures like the one below, it’s the kind of thing that scares meteorologists and climate scientists alike. There is no storm-it’s even a beautiful, sunny day in Miami Beach, FL. But the streets still are flooded!

This sunny day flooding occurs often at high tide near the times of the full moon and new moon (when the water is already higher than a typical day). The biggest natural tides of the year are called “King” tides, and that is when the flooding is worst. If a storm with strong onshore winds hits at the same time as a King tide, there could be record flooding.

As overall sea level rises, each extra inch or millimeter causes flooding to get worse. Over time, the flooding happens more often, and the historically worst floods become even worse.

Miami Beach has a unique problem. The rock it sits on is the type that allows water to come to the surface from UNDERNEATH. So sea walls and other barriers can’t work. In the meantime, they’re actually trying to RAISE the roads. It’s the only option for them.

NO DOUBT-SEA LEVEL IS RISING

Unlike global temperatures that go up in a chaotic-looking pattern, sea level just keeps going up…and up…and up.

The numbers are derived from satellite observations, and it is clear to any reasonable viewer that it is going up steadily. A closer look shows that the RATE of increase is growing. A decade ago, the increase was 2 millimeters per year-now it’s more than 3. (Bad news #1)

A millimeter isn’t much of a rise. Even 3 millimeters isn’t. But eventually, it adds up. Coastal flooding happens more often, and the worst floods are worse than what used to be records. The Atlantic City increase is below:

The rise since 1900 is clear. And the average increase is more than 4 millimeters per year. In fact, much of the East Coast of the U.S. is reporting sea level rises significantly higher than most other places on earth. (Bad news #2). There are reasons that it’s worse, including the fact that the land is SINKING.

HOW DOES THIS AFFECT US?

The National Service issues Coastal Flood Advisories or Warnings when the water goes high enough to cause flooding of streets and/or houses. And they’ve issued more and more of them in recent years. The NWS that covers our area in Mt. Holly, NJ actually raised the threshold for issuing coastal flood advisories “to avoid creating warning fatigue”. Eventually, one will be issued every time we have a high tide. That is, unless they keep raising the threshold.

A recent study showed an estimate of 30 days of coastal flooding in Atlantic City in our current climate. By 2030, that number would increase to about 100 days. And by 2050, it’s up to 250 days. That’s about FIVE DAYS PER WEEK! And we’re only talking about 33 years from now. A lot of us will still be around by that time. And surely, most of our children will be around, too.

The same study showed Cape May having around 320 days of at least minor coastal flooding by 2050, with Lewes, Delaware getting 225 days. And even in Philadelphia, it’s around 220 days. This means we’ll often be seeing flooding even on sunny days, just like Miami Beach is getting currently.

WHY IS SEA LEVEL RISING?

There is more than one cause of sea level rise. And as we’ve mentioned above, it doesn’t happen equally across the globe.

WARMING OCEANS-It’s called “thermal expansion”, and it is basic physics. As water warms, it expands. In the case of the ocean, it rises. It turns out that most of the carbon dioxide that is absorbed by the earth happens in the oceans. And the ocean heat has increased at a faster rate in the past 25 years or so. Ice melt in the Arctic means water replaces the ice, which raises the temperature in that part of the world, too.

MELTING GLACIERS-while icebergs and floating arctic ice do NOT affect sea level rise (the same way a melted ice cube doesn’t raise the water level in a glass), melting glaciers do. You’ve probably seen some of the amazing pictures.

The above is just one of dozens of examples all over the world. The melted ice sends water into the oceans and helps raise sea levels.

ICE MELT IN GREENLAND AND ANTARCTICA- This is the biggest area of uncertainty in determining how much sea level will rise in the future. How much ice will melt in Greenland and Antarctica? There is plenty melting already, but it is a very complex process, and we’re talking about unbelievably large amounts of potential ice melt.

So far, Greenland has been the biggest problem. The ice there isn’t melting slowly-or uniformly. There are huge variations from year to year, based on local weather patterns. But take a look at the two images below:

Including people in the image shows the relative sizes involved. There are huge, raging rivers flowing on land, heading toward the ocean, eventually adding inch by inch to sea level rise.

The bottom picture not only shows the large rivers, but look at the color of the ice. It’s not white! A darker surface absorbs more heat from the sun than a purely white ice sheet would. And absorbing more heat leads to more warming-which melts more ice-which leads to more warming-which melts more ice-and on, and on, and on…..As long as temperatures rise, more melting will occur, and sea level will rise some more.

In Antarctica, it’s the western part that is the problem. While the Eastern Antarctica area is seemingly stable, the west is not. The site below (from NASA) shows beautifully how the mass of ice has changed in recent years.

https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov//cgi-bin/details.cgi?aid=4347

ADDING IT UP

Sea level doesn’t rise rapidly, but it is rising more quickly than in the past. The warming of the oceans, glaciers melting, and the Greenland/Antarctica melt are the main culprits. And it is the increase of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide that do it. It’s not going to be a gradual thing in the future, due to those “warm, melt, warm, melt” combinations that are called “positive feedbacks”. They will cause sea level to rise faster.

Here is the most recent prediction from the IPCC (the gigantic United Nations project “to provide the world with an objective, scientific view of climate change”. Their early reports were considered way too conservative by many climate scientists, and, as expected, their recent projection (in 2013) was about 60% higher than the previous one.

The lower projections in blue represent what is expected with a slowing down of emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. The red area is a projection of a higher emissions scenario. That would lead to about a one meter sea level rise (3.3 feet). Even the lower scenario would be about 0.7 meters (2.3 feet).

Remember, the sinking land makes it worse, so those numbers would be significantly higher along the coast in our area.

If the above numbers aren’t bad enough, scores of climate scientists who cover sea level rise were recently surveyed. Their conclusion: if the IPCC numbers are going to be off, it will likely be that they are still UNDERESTIMATING future sea level rise.

Like the title of the blog said: "Big trouble."

Newly Unearthed Photo Could Explain Amelia Earhart's Fate

A newly uncovered photograph suggests legendary pilot Amelia Earhart and her navigator survived their mysterious 1937 plane disappearance, according to evidence from a History Channel documentary shared with the "Today" show 80 years and three days after they vanished.

The image, discovered in a formerly top secret American file, appears to show Earhart and Fred Noonan on a dock in the Marshall Islands, and investigators, including an NBC News analyst, believe her plane can be seen on a barge being towed by a Japanese ship in the background.

The photo is believed to have been taken by a spy who was later executed by Japan, which investigators believe imprisoned the pair of aviators in Saipan, where Noonan was executed and Earhart died.

Japan's Foreign Ministry, Defense Ministry and National Archives tell NBC News they have no documents of Earhart being in their custody. However, many records from that time were destroyed during or after World War II.

The History Channel is running a two-hour documentary on Sunday night at 9 p.m. ET.

A North Cape May man was arrested Friday after complaints from his ex-girlfriend to local police led to a search of his home and a temporary restraining order.

Ernest “Drew” Paulus, 46, was arrested for and charged with aggravated assault, two counts of invasion of Privacy, terroristic Threats, and various other charges stemming from his relationship with an ex-girlfriend.

On June 30, the Lower Township Police Detectives received a report from the North Wildwood Police Department that a female victim was at their headquarters reporting her ex-boyfriend had been sharing inappropriate photographs of her. The woman went on to share that Paulus had, “pointed a shotgun at her head several months ago and told her not to report him to the police,” according to the police report.

Detectives responded to the issue and escorted the woman back to the Lower Township Police Department to apply for a temporary restraining order, and provide a tape-recorded statement regarding the incidents.

Honorable Judge Hillegass of Lower Township proceeded to authorize a search warrant of Paulus’ home, located on the 600 block of Howland Avenue in North Cape May.

As detectives waited for the Cape May County SWAT team to assist in serving the warrant, they noticed Paulus leave his residence in a vehicle, officials said. However he was stopped and detained quickly before he could flee the scene.

Eventually the search warrant was executed and as a result, a cell phone, computer, and other electronics were seized, according to investigators. In addition, marijuana and assorted drug paraphernalia were also removed from the residence, police said.

The suspect was placed in Cape May County Correctional Center after being charged.

Police say additional complaints for the defendant are currently pending, after suspected steroids were also recovered in his home.

Philadelphia is showing some 'Brotherly Love' to one of its most recognizable Hollywood stars on his birthday.

"Kevin Hart Day" is set to take place Thursday in his native Philadelphia. The free public celebration, led by Councilman-at-Large David Oh and Mural Arts Philadelphia, will include performances from Philly artists Freeway, Chill Moody, the International DJ Casper and Bria Marie.

The resolution, introduced by Councilman-at-Large David Oh, serves as a recognition for Hart's dedication to the arts and his hometown.

“Kevin Hart is a fantastic ambassador for the City of Philadelphia, and this is a simple way to show him gratitude,” Councilman Oh said. “Whether through his hilarious sense of humor or through his heartfelt generosity towards his hometown, Kevin Hart knows how to bring a smile to everyone in Philadelphia.”

During Thursday's event, Councilman Oh will welcome Hart back to his childhood neighborhood. Hart will also receive an official citation declaring his birthday, July 6, as Kevin Hart Day in Philadelphia. Mural Arts Philadelphia will also dedicate a new mural, a portrait of Hart, on Max's Steaks, located a block away from the comedian's childhood home near the intersection of 15th Street and Erie Avenue, where he lived in a one-bedroom apartment with his mother and older brother.

The free event will also include food, games, art activities and music throughout the day with special appearances by Phillies players Odubel Herrera, Howie Kendrick, Nick Williams and the Phillie Phanatic. Community members and families are all welcome and encouraged to attend.

Hart has donated thousands of dollars to improve the lives of youth in Philadelphia — from giving $250,000 to the School District of Philadelphia and Parks and Recreation facilities for new computers to sponsoring college scholarships valued at $50,000 each for four Philly high school students.

The comedian, who is among the highest paid, has also put his hometown on the map of the film industry.

Trump Supporter Says He Was Attacked in Philadelphia

A man is speaking out after he says he was brutally attacked for his support of President Donald Trump following dueling rallies that took place in Philadelphia over the weekend.

Howard Caplan, 48, told NBC10 he attended a pro-Trump rally in Center City Sunday morning. The group marched from the Constitution Center to Dilworth Plaza. At the same time, an anti-Trump group held a demonstration at People’s Plaza at Independence Mall around 10 a.m., calling for the president’s impeachment.

Police say around 12:30 p.m., several anti-Trump protesters attacked a group of Trump supporters who were trying to enter a Center City bar. Three were arrested after they allegedly injured one of the Trump supporters and attacked a police officer.

Hours after that incident, Caplan was walking to his Northeast Philadelphia home while carrying a “Trump 2020” sign when he was approached by a group of men.

“They never saw the sign when they asked me,” Caplan said. “They said, ‘Hey, what’s on your sign? They already knew. They never even and then, bang.”

Caplan told NBC10 one of the men slammed a bottle on his head while the others began to kick and punch him repeatedly. The attackers then fled to a nearby train station while Caplan chased after them. Caplan says police caught up to the attackers and detectives took his statement. Police told NBC10 they are investigating the incident but haven't announced any charges. They also have not confirmed Caplan's claim that officers captured his attackers.

Caplan suffered several injuries, including a bloody gash on his head and bruises around his eye.

“Six staples to my head,” Caplan said. “Obviously my eye is worse. Scrapes on my leg.”

Caplan, who has publicly bashed Hillary Clinton and shown his support for the controversial “Pizzagate” conspiracy theory, is convinced he was targeted because of his political beliefs.

“If they want to beat people up for that, you know it’s the ultimate irony,” Caplan said. “They’re beating people up for their freedom of expression.”

Caplan says he’s still in a good amount of pain but considers himself lucky. He plans to be back out for more demonstrations in the future.
