Capt. Malachi Jones will address hold a news conference at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the city's Northwest Detective Division.

Pa. Crashes Jump, Fatalities Quadruple over July 4th Weekend

The Independence Day weekend was a dangerous one for the region’s motorists.

During the holiday weekend’s four day span — July 1-4 — Pennsylvania Police investigated 741 crashes across the state — an increase of more than 300 crashes over last year’s holiday total.

Those crashes killed 13 people, according to figures released by the Pennsylvania State Police. Last year, only three people were killed during accidents over the holiday weekend.

Police also say alcohol was a factor in 75 of the crashes. Overall, police figures revealed that 259 people were injured from the holiday accidents, nearly 100 more people than in 2016.

Officers were also busy making sure motorists avoided a wreck on the road. Police arrested 474 drivers for operating under the influence and issued 11,481 speeding citation, both increases from 2016.

Funeral Home Worker Dumps Casket with Baby Organs Inside

A child-sized casket containing the embalmed internal organs of an infant that was found on a Philadelphia sidewalk was dumped there by a New Jersey funeral home worker, police said Thursday.

Police got a call Monday night that a small white casket had been found in a black trash bag, not far from several cemeteries. Inside, officers found no body but a black garbage bag with the internal organs belonging to a three-to-four-month-old baby.

"It was shocking to say the least," Capt. Malachi Jones said. "It begs the question: Where is the baby?"

Initially, police thought the casket had been dug up from one of the nearby cemeteries, but an investigation revealed none had any disturbed graves.

"It was basically a whodunit," Jones said.

On Tuesday, the New Jersey funeral home director reached out to Philadelphia police and said an employee had admitted to dumping the casket, saying he had no idea there were any remains inside.

The child's funeral was last Thursday, and just before the service, the latch on the coffin broke, Jones said. Funeral home workers transferred the child's body to a new casket, and the broken one was placed in a work car, he said. It's not clear why the organs -- which were removed as part of an autopsy -- were left in the broken casket.

Police have been in touch with the child's family, and they hope to reunite the organs with the baby's body. However, the child has already been buried, so the remains would have to be exhumed in order to bury the organs with the baby, Jones said.

"The family is quite upset," he said.

It's unclear why the employee dumped the casket, and why he did it in Philadelphia. The name of the funeral home hasn't been released.

No charges have been filed, but the investigation is continuing.

Funeral for Teen Killed in Road Rage Shooting Open to All

Bianca Roberson, the high school graduate gunned down in an apparent road rage shooting as she drove down a Chester County highway last month, will be laid to rest Friday.

Her family says the service will be open for all who would like to attend and pay respects to their daughter.

A viewing will be held from 8 - 10:45 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's Baptist Church along Hagerty Boulevard in West Chester, Pa. A tribute service will follow. The 18-year-old will be interned at a Frazer cemetery.

Roberson was trying to merge into a single lane on Route 100 last Wednesday when police said another driver, 28-year-old David Desper, pulled out a gun and shot her in the head. The teen was killed instantly, her car veering off the road into the woods.

Authorities said both drivers were jockeying for a spot and Desper became enraged. They described the incident as a case of road rage. He's been charged with a number of crimes including murder.

The shooting and resulting manhunt for Desper captured national attention. Roberson's father, Rodney, called the killing a "hate crime."

"I want them to throw the book at this guy," the father told NBC10 on Monday. "Throw him under the jail."

Prosecutors have not indicated that racial discrimination was a motivating factor in the shooting.

Desper, who is being held without bail, was set to appear in a Chester County court next Wednesday, but that preliminary hearing has been delayed until mid-August, court records show. He has yet to enter a plea in the case.

Rodney Roberson tells NBC10 he and his family plan to attend the proceedings.

Bianca was an honor student who just graduated from Bayard Rustin High School. She planned to attend Jacksonville University in Florida and major in Criminal Justice to one day become an FBI forensic agent.

A scholarship is being founded at the university in Bianca and her brother Mykel's memories. He died several years ago from a heart condition.

Retrial Date in Cosby Sex Assault Case Set for November

Bill Cosby's retrial on charges he drugged and molested a woman more than a decade ago is set for November.

An order signed Thursday by Judge Steven O'Neill says all parties must report to the Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown, Pennsylvania, on Nov. 6.

Prosecutors found themselves back to square one June 17 after the judge declared a mistrial. The jury failed to reach a verdict in more than 52 hours of deliberations over six days.

District Attorney Kevin Steele vowed to put Cosby on trial again, saying accuser Andrea Constand supported the decision.

Cosby was tried on charges stemming from an encounter with the former Temple University worker, who said she was sexually assaulted in 2004.

Cosby turns 80 next week and contends the encounter was consensual.

Luxury hotel chain Loews Hotels is warning some customers that a data breach may have resulted in financial information being stolen.

Hackers obtained access to credit card, security code and password information through a third-party company, Sabre, which provides booking services through travel agencies, websites and other mediums, the hotel chain said. In some cases, email, phone number and street addresses were also taken.

Highly-sensitive information like Social Security numbers and passport information was not affected.

The unauthorized access was ongoing for seven months between August 2016 and March 2017. Sabre told Lowes about the breach in June.

In a statement, Sabre said less than 15 percent of the average daily bookings were viewed by the hackers.

Customers who may have had their information taken are advised to monitor their credit card statements and credit report for fraudulent activity and reach out to the credit card company if any suspicious activity is noticed.

Tourists Beaten, Robbed by Group of Teens in Center City

A pair of tourists are recovering after they were beaten and robbed while walking down the street in Market East shortly after Fourth of July festivities wrapped up.

Philadelphia detectives are searching for the group of teens who were caught on surveillance video carrying out the attack.

The victims, 18-year-old and 23-year-old men, were walking along the 1100 block of Filbert Street at 12:35 a.m. Wednesday when the first punch was thrown, police said. SEPTA's Jefferson Station, Reading Terminal Market, several hotels and the Greyhound Station are all in that same area.

Several teens started punching the men in the face and head. As they lay on the ground, the robbers then take the victim's cellphones and wallets.

Ahmad Zada was working the counter at the Crown Fried Chicken restaurant that's nearby and rushed out to help the victims.

"I go outside to pick up the guy...they were really scared," Zada said Thursday. He said it appeared the men were visiting from abroad.

Zada said while he was outside, several of the teens involved in the attack came back into the restaurant from the other direction and ordered sodas. Their return was caught on surveillance video. They left without being caught.

An ambulance was dispatched to take the victims to Hahnemann University Hospital. One man suffered a broken nose and cuts to his face while the other man's eye was sliced.

Police are asking anyone with information to call the crime tipline at 215-686-TIPS.
