Firefighter Student Forced to Take Down American Flag

On the anniversary of 9/11, it would seem normal for American flags to be flying everywhere, but one student at Alvernia University in Reading, Pennsylvania was forced to take his flag down when he and his roommates hung it from the window of their on-campus townhouse.

“I'm a firefighter, so in honor of the 343 firefighters (that were killed on 9/11), I, along with my roommates, draped a flag from our second floor windows,” Zach Zechman, a senior at Alvernia told NBC10.

After a couple hours of the flag hanging, two resident assistants came and told Zechman he had to take it down. He said they brought a printed copy of the section of the student handbook that prohibits objects hanging from windows.

“American flags are welcome and flying throughout Alvernia’s campus at half-staff in honor of the day,” Carey Manzolillo, Associate Director of Communications for the University told NBC10 in an email. “Our student policy does however state that sheets, banners or other such objects may not be hung outside of windows or on the exterior portion of any residence hall.”

Manzolillo said the information could be found on page 61 of the Alvernia Student Handbook.

Zechman said he took the flag down, and is trying to set up a meeting with the Dean of Students to change the rules for certain days.

“I want it to be different for a day like today, where something like that means something,” Zechman said.

Rain and snow may not stop postal carriers from delivering mail, but Pope Francis will.

The United States Postal Service is suspending mail collection and delivery in eight Philadelphia postal codes on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 26-27 during the papal visit. Officials cite the security perimeter being set up by the U.S. Secret Service as the reason for the stoppage.

The affected areas are the Philadelphia Main Office (postal codes 19102, 19103 and 19104); William Penn Delivery Annex (postal codes 19106 and 19107); Fairmount Station (postal code 19130); and Spring Garden Station (postal codes 19122 and 19123).

Mail delivery will be completed in Center City by 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 25. The day before, collection mailboxes in the security zone will be locked or removed, officials said.

Regular mail service is expected to resume on Monday, Sept. 28.

A pilot is dead after his small plane went down in a heavily-wooded area in southern Camden County, New Jersey, county officials said.

The single-engine Cessna 150 crashed around 11:15 a.m. into the backyard of a home along the 600 block of Jackson Road in the Atco section of Waterford Township, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The yellow-and-white-painted prop plane was left crumpled and crushed next to a large tree — feet from a in-ground pool. The fuselage was covered in flame-retardant foam.

Camden County spokesman Dan Keashen said the male pilot was killed. It's not clear if anyone else was onboard the plane. Initial reports said two people were trapped.

The Camden County hazmat team was dispatched to the scene to assist in the rescue.

The FAA says it's not immediately clear what brought the plane down.

No one on the ground was injured, Keashen said. The Camden County Prosecutor's Office, FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are all investigating.

This is the third deadly small plane crash in New Jersey this week.

A single-engine plane went down into the Atlantic Ocean seven miles off the coast of Atlantic City on Thursday. The U.S. Coast Guard searched the ocean for the plane, but suspended the mission after failing to find debris.

In North Jersey, a plane crashed Tuesday after taking off from Somerset Airport. It was not discovered until Thursday after the pilot was reported missing.

Chester Police Commissioner Joseph Bail said Hoffman didn't suffer any broken bones and was alert following the crash.

Witnesses last saw the car speeding north along Morton Avenue.

Man Kills Pregnant Girlfriend of Robbery Accomplice: Police

A man who was already in custody for allegedly shooting and killing a man during a robbery outside a Popeye's Chicken was charged in the murder of the pregnant girlfriend of his alleged accomplice.

On Thursday Markese Martin, 26, was charged with the murder of Jasmine Williams, the subsequent death of her unborn child and the attempted murder of Williams' boyfriend.

Martin was initially charged in the shooting death of 42-year-old Kenneth Woods. On September 23, 2014, Woods was shot in the chest in the parking lot of the Popeye’s Chicken on the 4200 block of Broad Street.

Woods was taken to Temple Hospital by an unidentified civilian and was later pronounced dead.

On Sept. 27, 2014, homicide investigators issued a warrant for Martin for the shooting death of Woods. Police also arrested 20-year-old Megan Jones of Blue Bell, Pa. as well as 26-year-old Kord Rozier of the 1300 block of E. Price Street in connection to the shooting. Both Jones and Rozier were charged with murder and other related offenses.

Martin was also charged in the murder of Rozier’s pregnant girlfriend Jasmine Williams. On September 24, Williams, 25 and Rozier were on the 1600 block of W Nedro Street when a gunman opened fire. Williams was struck several times. She was taken to Einstein Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

Williams was 8-months-pregnant with Rozier's child at the time of the shooting. Doctors delivered her baby girl but the infant later died at the hospital. Rozier was also struck in the shooting but survived after treatment at Temple University Hospital.

Family members told NBC10 Rozier planned to surrender in connection to the Popeye’s shooting prior to his girlfriend’s death. They believe Rozier was specifically targeted by Martin once he found out he was going to turn himself in to authorities and that Williams was an innocent bystander.

Police issued an arrest warrant for Martin on Sept. 4 in relation to Williams' death. At the time Martin was already in custody in connection to Woods' death.
