A New Jersey teenage soccer player who died suddenly during a sleepover will be laid to rest over the weekend.

Kara Lemanowicz was found dead in a house on Barnsboro Road in Mantua Township last Saturday morning.

The tragic death of beloved Eastern High School athlete was not suspicious, said investigators. They believe a medical issue likely killed the teen.

Kara and her teammates from a local soccer club had spent the night at the home.

Jamie McGroarty, head coach of the Eastern High School girls soccer team, knew Lemanowicz since she was a child. He called her death "a heart wrenching blow to all that knew her."

"She was a goofy, fun-loving kid who always was smiling," he said. Lemanowicz was set to play on the high school team as a freshman.

"She always played the game with a fun loving attitude and absolutely loved the game," McGroarty said.

Kara's family also noted that she loved children with special needs, lacrosse and basketball, according to Kara's obituary.

A viewing for Kara will be held Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at St. Andrew the Apostle Church in Gibbsboro, New Jersey. The family will hold a private cremation and internment ceremony.

Friends and relatives started a GoFundMe page to help pay for her funeral expenses.

'Francis Fields' Campground for Papal Pilgrims Canceled

Plans to build a temporary campground in Fairmount Park offering pilgrims coming to see Pope Francis during his historic trip to Philadelphia have been canceled.

The Francis Fields were designed to house up to 16,000 people in East Fairmount Park north of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and near Strawberry Mansion over the weekend of September 25-27. There was to be space for car camping, RVs and tents.

A lack of sales and the availability of other forms of lodging -- like hotel rooms -- led to the cancellation, organizers with ESM Productions, the company hired to prepare for the papal visit and World Meeting of Families, told NBC10 Friday. They are also producing Saturday's Festival of Families event and the papal mass on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

The cancellation came two days after tickets went on sale for camping spots. Access to the campground was to cost $199 per camper and would include security, toilets and showers.

Hotel officials estimate about 3,000 rooms remain available for the weekend.

A dog that is trained to defend the safety of his community is getting a safety defense all his own.

K9 “Major” who serves on the  force was given a bulletproof and stab-resistant vest Friday.

The vest, made by non-profit Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. was sponsored by the Hilltown Dog Training Club that previously awarded vests to Major’s fellow K9s, Cody and Cooper.

K9s, like regular officers are often put into potentially dangerous or violent situations.

Lt. Gerald Dougherty explained that two of the K9s from their department are cross-trained in narcotics and another is cross-trained in explosives in addition to being utilized in missing persons cases, building searches and even criminal apprehensions.

Earlier this month, Ike, a K9 from Vancouver, Washington was stabbed during a struggle with a suspect and later died from his injuries.

Vested Interest has raised more than $1 million through private and corporate donations and provided over 1,500 protective vests in 49 states at $1050 per vest according to their Facebook page.

Major will no longer be left vulnerable.

Lt. Dougherty says his department also has plans to add another K9 to their ranks soon.

Record Rain Falls in Philly, Over 5 Inches In Surrounding Area

Our parched Earth finally got the precipitation it needed. Yesterday’s rainstorm was one for the record books. 4.76” of rain fell in Philadelphia on Thursday, making it the 8th wettest day ever record, and the second wettest day in September (behind a day where we got walloped by Hurricane Floyd.)

Take a look at some of our most impressive rain totals:

As you can see, several inches of rain was not uncommon yesterday, from Delaware to the Lehigh Valley. If you look at a map of our rain totals, you’ll notice that there were a couple of bull’s eyes of rain:

But it was one spot in particular, from the Commodore Barry up to the Walt Whitman that saw the most rain. That dark red spot is a radar estimated 6.5” of rain! What’s even more remarkable is much of that came at night, from about 8:30 to midnight, right during the NFL Season Opener. If you saw a crawl on your TV screen, or got woken up in the middle of the night with a Flash Flood Warning alert on your phone, this was the reason.

So why all this rain? We just happened to be in the right place. A low pressure system formed along a pretty potent cold front and just happened to stall over our area. If you notice the radar starting to “pinwheel,” that’s a sign the low is right over us, and it was in no hurry to depart.

One other potential contributing factor is the extremely warm ocean. If you’ve been down the shore, you’ve probably noticed it’s felt a bit more like bath water than the Atlantic Ocean. Whenever the water is that warm, storms have additional moisture available to them, and thus we get more rain.

Finally, as we dry out today, know there’s another round of rain coming tomorrow. The ground is so saturated from our last storm that it won’t be able to soak up all of the rain, so expect additional flooding.

But…before you think it’s all bad news, there is a bright change to the forecast…Sunday is looking almost completely dry, so you’ll be able to salvage the second half of the weekend with some really comfy temperatures and low humidity. We are dry all next week, but temperatures will be on the increase as we head towards the official start of fall.
