Search for More Possible Jihadists Spreads to Delco

A confessed gunman who ambushed a Philadelphia Police officer might have been part of a small group of urban terrorists and has investigators searching not only in the Philadelphia neighborhood where the shooting occurred but nearby Delaware County as well.

Terror investigators worked into Tuesday to find three other men in connection with Edward Archer, a self-proclaimed jihadist who shot a Philadelphia police officer "in the name of Islam," NBC News reported.

That investigation included Chester in nearby Delaware County where one of the other men may be from, sources with knowledge of the investigation told NBC10’s Deanna Durante.

Sources said the other men hadn't appeared to have committed any crimes as of yet.

Federal and Philadelphia area investigators also interviewed Archer’s family, which lives in Delaware County, and searched for other clues after a woman came forward over the weekend to report that Archer has ties with a trio of men with similar intentions. NBC News reported that investigators have learned the names of two of the other men.

Archer faces attempted murder charges for Thursday’s night’s caught-on-camera attempted assassination of Philly Police Officer Jesse Hartnett. The shooting left Hartnett hospitalized with serious injuries to his left arm.

"His arm was hanging by a string and he got out there, did what his training said, and he was in an ultimate battle with an urban terrorist, and he came out on top," Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 President John McNesby told NBC10.

Investigators want to find out how Archer, 30, managed to make trips to Egypt and Saudi Arabia in 2011 and 2012 despite being unemployed and previously not holding a passport.

As the investigation into the shooting and search for other possible jihadists continued, police in the region remained on edge.

Some municipalities in Delaware County began doubling up patrols after Philadelphia Police made a similar move in the wake of the shooting. Haverford Township stressed a policy of officers sticking together and only responding with a second officer present and Upper Darby Township continued with its policy of always having backup before responding to a scene.

Parents rushed to pick up their children from a Philadelphia day care after a gunman opened fire outside.

Philadelphia Police didn’t immediately say why the gunman began firing at E Ontario and H streets -- not far from KenCrest Early Childhood Center -- in the city’s Kensington neighborhood around 1:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Luckily, no one was hit but at least one bullet did strike a parked car and officers on adjacent Russell Street heard the shots and saw the shooter fleeing on a moped, said police.

The day care alerted parents about the shooting, which led to parents some parents to quickly pick up their children, said Blue Bell, Pennsylvania-based KenCrest spokesman Mik Gregoire.

Gregoire called the incident "nerve-wracking" but said the staff at the center followed emergency procedures and sheltered in place. He said the shooting didn't impact anything at the center.

No word yet on a motive.

A short time before the shooting on H Street, a gunman killed a 25-year-old man about two miles away at W Indiana Avenue and N Lawrence Street.

Police made no connections between the shootings.

As Vice President Joe Biden grappled with his son's possible resignation as Delaware's attorney general due to his failing health, President Barack Obama offered to help his second-in-command pay his family's bills, NBC News reported.

In an interview aired Monday by CNN, the vice president said that he told Obama that he and his wife Jill planned to sell their home in Delaware to support Beau Biden's family if his son became unable to work.

"Jill and I will sell the house and be in good shape," Biden says he told the president during a weekly meeting.

Obama's response was swift, the vice president recounted.

"Don't sell that house. Promise me you won't sell the house," the president said, according to Biden's recollection of the conversation. "I'll give you the money. Whatever you need, I'll give you the money."

Mistaken Powerball Celebration

Workers at one New Jersey restaurant cried tears of joy and shouted -- one even quit his job -- after they matched winning Powerball numbers with a lottery ticket they'd purchased for an office pool.

Unfortunately for them, they didn't realize they had read off the wrong day's winning numbers.

Video from Grissini's Restaurant in Englewood Cliffs shows servers, cooks and bartenders celebrating after reading off Wednesday's winning numbers with one of the tickets they bought for Saturday night's $900 million drawing.

Their ticket, which was purchased Saturday and included numbers 2, 11, 47, 62, 63 and a Powerball of 17, was an exact match for Wednesday's $528 million prize. No one won in Wednesday's drawing, which prompted the historic $900 million jackpot that later swelled to $1.5 billion after Saturday's drawing.

The workers can be seen on video reading through the numbers, with another shouting "Yes!" with each successive match. When the person reading off the ticket announces the Powerball, the entire restaurant erupts in cheers.

A second video shows workers hooping and hollering as though they won the epic jackpot. One man goes around hugging his coworkers and wiping away tears.

It's not clear when they figured out they'd read the wrong day's winning numbers.

Charlie Poveromo, one worker who thought he'd become an instant millionaire, said Tuesday that he still couldn't believe that their ticket came so close to winning.

"I still can't believe it," he said. "What a feeling."

Students, say goodbye to your newest gadget and leave it at home.

Local colleges and universities have banned the use of hoverboards on their campuses after a slew of hazards related to the popular holiday gifts.

On Friday, Temple University banned hoverboards from campus, with an announcement on their website. “Temple University is prohibiting these devices on all university campuses, including in residence halls and academic buildings, unless or until the university determines that appropriate standards can be implemented to reduce associated safety and fire risks," the statement read.

Kean University banned the devices on its Union and Ocean campuses, and said officials would confiscate any boards brought to the school.

Villanova University sent an email to students notifying them of a ban there, and requested that students leave their hoverboards at home if they had not yet returned to campus.

On Tuesday, Ursinus College prohibited the “use, possession, or storage” of the boards on campus.

Hoverboards have proven to be a safety risk in recent weeks, spontaneously catching fire while in use or charging. A popular brand of hoverboards is the target of a lawsuit regarding the fire risks.

A Philadelphia cab driver says he’s unable to work after a man fired a paintball at him and struck him in the eye in Center City last month.

Arshad Khan, 38, told police he was driving his taxi on 16th and Market streets on Dec. 19 shortly after midnight. Khan said he was in the middle lane waiting at the red light when two men in a black SUV pulled up beside him. One of the men then pulled out a paintball gun and fired at the side of his vehicle, according to investigators.

When Khan opened his window to complain, the driver of the SUV shot another paintball which struck Khan in the right eye, police said. The suspects then fled the scene.

Khan was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital where he underwent several surgeries. Khan, the father of two daughters, says he has been unable to work since the incident.

“I lost my eye, I don’t know, and I lost my job and everything, my house, everything. I feel very bad,” Khan said. “I’m in pain and suffering a lot.”

Khan's wife created a GoFundMe page to help with expenses. CLICK HERE if you would like to donate.

Police have not released a detailed description of the suspects but say they were driving a mid-size black SUV. If you have any information on the incident, please call Philadelphia Police.

Muslims March in Support of Philly Police

As Philadelphia Police remain on high alert after a man allegedly shot an officer, “in the name of Islam,” local Muslims showed their support for the men and women in blue.

Members of Philly’s Arab and Muslim community marched from the MAS Islamic Center on East Luzerne Street to 24th and 25th Police District headquarters Tuesday. They held signs in support of police and expressed their appreciation for Philly law enforcement.

The peaceful march occurred as tensions continue to run high following last Thursday’s ambush shooting of Philadelphia Police officer Jesse Hartnett. The suspect in the shooting, Edward Archer, allegedly told police he shot Hartnett “in the name of Islam” and also pledged allegiance to ISIS.

Philadelphia Police also received an anonymous tip claiming Archer was part of a group of four radicals who are planning future attacks on officers. The tip claimed that Archer attended two Philadelphia mosques. Members of those mosques told NBC10 they didn’t know Archer, condemned his actions and said that they preached against extremism.

Philly’s Muslim community and Mayor Jim Kenney also condemned the shooting. Kenney also stated that Archer’s apparent motive did not represent Islam, “in any way, shape or form or its teachings.”

“This is a criminal with a stolen gun who tried to kill one of our officers,'' Kenney said. “It has nothing to do with being a Muslim or following the Islamic faith.''

Those who participated in Tuesday’s march echoed his sentiments.

“We’re here to say that we do not support those types of activities nor does our religion support those types of activities,” said Saadiq Jabbar Garner of the Philadelphia Human Relations Commission.

Several Philadelphia police officers also attended Tuesday’s rally and shook hands with the marchers.

“You condemn the actions of one individual not an entire community,” said Philadelphia Police Inspector Michael McCarrick. “Get that message across that the Philadelphia Police and the Muslim community are one. We are this community.”

A fire that gutted a beloved Delaware bakery on Christmas Eve began accidentally.

Just hours after people lined up to grab Christmas treats at Serpe and Sons Bakery on Kirkwood Highway in Elsmere the blaze broke out and quickly spread. On Tuesday, the Delaware State Fire Marshal ruled that the a "malfunction in or around the main bakery oven" ignited the blaze.

Firefighters from six different companies could be seen going in and out as thick smoke poured from the large building. Two firefighters required evaluation at an area hospital, said New Castle county dispatchers.

The blaze broke out just hours after people packed Serpe's to pick up cakes, cookies, Italian bread and rolls for Christmas meals.

Photos posted to the bakery’s Facebook page showed lines out the door:

The Serpe family even turned to Instagram to thank customers as the fire was burning.

The blaze left customers devastated.

"I'm actually heartbroken right now, to have it happen on Christmas Eve is horrible," said customer Dana Campbell.

The accidental fire caused serious damage to equipment inside the building and the building itself, said the fire marshal.

Owners Dominic and Nicholas Serpe told NBC10 they were thankful everyone made it out OK and they vowed to work hard to reopen.

Three NYPD officers rescued a woman in an overturned ambulette while on their way to a memorial for an Ohio police dog that was shot and killed last weekend.

Officers Benny Colecchia, Daniel Rich and Matt Wicelinski were traveling on Interstate 80 in Clarion, Pennsylvania, on Thursday afternoon when they came across the crashed vehicle.

An ambulette had overturned in a snowy crash, trapping a woman in a wheelchair.

The officers used a hammer to break a window. Once inside the ambulette, officer Colecchia used a knife to cut the woman free from her wheelchair, while officers Rich and Wicelinski carried her from the wreckage and administered first aid. They stayed with the woman until emergency crews arrived.

The officers were headed to Canton, Ohio, with their three K-9 partners — K-9 officers Timoshenko, Dallas and Hudson — to pay respects to a Canton Police Department K-9 officer, Jethro, who died Sunday after allegedly being shot by a suspect Saturday.

Colecchia, Rich and Wicelinski are members of the NYPD’s ESU K-9 unit.

Car Slams Into House, Traps Woman Eating Breakfast

A woman's wild ride around a Delaware retirement community Friday morning left herself and a neighbor eating breakfast injured.

"I don't know how the heck she made it out of there," said neighbor Gail Duvernay. "She definitely had a guardian angel."

A 60-year-old resident of the Village of Hershey Run 55-plus community in Stanton, Delaware slammed her sedan into a home along Colefax Court around 7:40 a.m., said New Castle County Police Cpl. Tom Jackson.

"I was sitting in the lounge chair and I heard a loud bang," said Ben Buzin.

The driver -- identified by neighbors as Vicki Skielnik -- was able to get out of her Toyota and wound up limping across the lawn as neighbors rushed over to help.

"When I ran over to her I was calling 911 at the same time the she collapsed," said Buzin. "She kept saying, "it got away from me, it got away from me.'"

She suffered minor injuries while Betty Painter -- who was trapped under the car for 20 minutes as the tires spun -- suffered more serious injuries that left her in critical but stable condition, said police. The 73-year-old underwent surgery for a broken ankle Friday afternoon.

The wreck left the sedan sticking out of the side of the kitchen – narrowly missing the home’s utility meters and a fire hydrant.

Before striking the home, Skielnik had pulled out of her own driveway, struck the garage of a home across the cul-de-sac then backed up through a few yards before going into the home where the woman ate breakfast.

The wreck left the home uninhabitable, said the county building inspector. Crews worked through the day to clear debris and board up the home.

The crash also left the garage door of the other home badly damaged but kept the structure of the home intact, said police.

Police were unsure what Skielnik to lose control and were checking to see if she suffered some sort of medical emergency.

She was issued a citation for careless driving.

The mayor’s office is issuing a warning after a man posed as an inspector and told three Philadelphia residents their properties were going to be demolished.

Officials say on January 8, and again on January 13, a man approached three separate residents and told them the City of Philadelphia was going to demolish their property.

The man approached residents at the following three locations:

  • 2500 block of N. Colorado Street
  • 2400 block of W. Cumberland Street
  • 2400 block of W. Sergeant Street

He did not provide any identification and is not employed by the city’s Licenses and Inspections Department. None of the properties were scheduled to be demolished, officials said.

The man, described as middle-aged, was wearing a reflective vest and yellow hardhat. He was driving a dark green Volvo station wagon with Pennsylvania tags.

Representatives with L&I said their inspectors wear clothing with the Department’s name and insignia and present proper identification when inspecting properties. The public should always request identification from anyone representing to be employed by any City agency or department.

The public is advised to call Licenses and Inspections at 215-686-2400 to confirm if a property is going to be demolished either by the city or private party.

Chipotle Closing Nationwide for Food Safety Meeting

$

Chipotle will be closing its restaurants nationwide on Feb. 8 for a "national team meeting" as the company works to battle an ongoing fallout from a string of high-profile foodborne illness outbreaks that began in August 2015.

Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. Communication Director Chris Arnold confirmed the closure Friday, saying all U.S. restaurants will be closed for lunch and will re-open at 3 p.m. in each time zone.

"We will be thanking our restaurant teams for their hard work during a difficult time, discussing some of the changes we are implementing as part of our enhanced food safety plan, and answering questions from employees," Arnold said in an email to NBC Owned Stations.

The Denver-based tex-mex chain is reeling from outbreaks involving norovirus, E. coli and salmonella. The chain faced a salmonella outbreak linked to tomatoes that sickened dozens of people in Minnesota beginning in August. In California, health workers said norovirus sickened nearly 100 customers and employees at a Chipotle restaurant in Simi Valley in mid-August.

The California norovirus outbreak prompted federal officials to launch a criminal investigation and Chipotle was served with a subpoena in December.

Another outbreak started in October in Oregon and Washington and spread to six other states, sickening more than 45 people by mid-November. Chipotle subsequently closed 43 restaurants in the two states after health officials discovered most of the people sickened by the E. coli outbreak had eaten at the chain's restaurants.

In December, 141 students were sickened by norovirus after eating at a Chipotle near Boston College in Massachusetts. Also in December, federal health officials investigated five cases of E. coli poisoning in Kansas, North Dakota and Oklahoma.

In order to regain consumer confidence, the company announced Wednesday at an investment conference in Orlando, Florida, it would be launching a marketing push in February that would include "inviting customers back" with direct mail offers.

Co-CEO Monty Moran, in an interview with CNBC at the IRC conference, said the restaurant chain has doubled the amount of free food stores will be able to give away to customers.

Still, the food scares will likely remain an issue for Chipotle. The company's Chief Financial Officer Jack Hartung noted the company's recovery would be "messy," with investments in food safety and marketing eating into profit margins — already hurting from plunging stock prices.

The Center for Disease Control has not identified an ingredient that was responsible for the E. coli outbreak, and Chipotle has said it may never know what was to blame.

Heavy Rain While You Sleep

A quick-moving Nor’easter will drop rain on the area while most of you sleep overnight.

"Sleep a little late and you'll miss the whole thing," quipped NBC10 First Alert Weather chief meteorologist Glenn "Hurricane" Schwartz.

The storm looked impressive as it moved northeast toward the Philadelphia Region Friday afternoon.

"You can see the circulation so that's a pretty well-defined storm," said Glenn.

The storm is expected to move into the area around 7 p.m. in some areas and as late as 9 p.m. or later in other parts of the region.

"Once it starts raining it will be a steady rain," said Glenn.

But the threat of the storm will be diminished because of its speed and warmer temps.

"It's moving so fast it may be totally out of here by tomorrow morning," said Glenn.

The biggest threat for any significant impact from the storm appeared to be along the coast.

"There's going to a quick burst of wind at the Shore... but because you don't have a long duration of the winds you're going to have less of a threat of wind damage or coastal flooding," said Glenn.

Temps should remain above freezing for most of the area throughout the duration of the nor’easter but the mountains could see a little bit of snowfall toward at the end of the storm.

"Of course if it was colder it would be a hell of a snowstorm," said Glenn.

Once the rain moves out, expect clouds to stick around with the chance of some afternoon sun as winds pick up later in the day as temps push above 50 again.
