Rehab for Man Who Beat Ex's Dog With Bat: SPCA

The Pennsylvania SPCA hoped that a South Philadelphia man charged with striking his ex-girlfriend's dog with a baseball bat can be rehabilitated.

Andrew Wallace, 41, must go through 18 months of an accelerated rehabilitative disposition (ARD) program, must participate in anger management classes, complete community service and pay $2,500 toward the dog's medical care for severely injuring his ex's pit bull mix with a baseball bat in Sept. 2015, the SPCA announced Friday.

After the Sept. 6 attack, officers tracked down Wallace, of S 10th Street, at his place of employment and arrested him on animal cruelty and related charges. Philadelphia Police also charged Wallace with simple assault on his ex.

PSPCA CEO Jerry Buckley called the attack of Ruby the dog and its owner “heinous.”

"The Pennsylvania SPCA believes that no animal should be subjected to such blatant violent acts,” said Buckley. “In this case, we are pleased that the dog in question, Ruby, will have the opportunity to recover in her home and have the financial support to receive the best treatment available. We can only hope that through his ordered treatment, the defendant will change his ways.”

A South Jersey man faces child endangerment charges after investigators uncovered child pornography on his cloud account.

Lumberton Police arrested Tim Torres, of Poplar Court, on Thursday after a search warrant turned up evidence that the 21-year-old used online-based cloud services to upload photos and video of pre-pubescent girls engaged in sex acts, said the Burlington County Prosecutors Office.

State, county and local police zeroed in on Torres thanks to high-tech and digital crimes task forces, said prosecutors.

Torres faced a court hearing Friday as he remained behind bars on $25,000 bail. A grand jury will decide if he will be indicted.

Recognize This Granny Shooter?

Philadelphia Police hope that surveillance video of a sedan speeding away from the scene after a robber shot a 75-year-old grandmother carrying her groceries home in the face on New Year's Eve will help them nab their suspect.

But, after a week without an arrest, a reward was announced and a sketch was released in hopes that someone would come for forward with information on the "heinous" attack.

"You take a lady who's 75 years old, she's fighting you for her pocketbook and you shoot her in the face -- I don't think there's anything more heinous than that," said Northeast Detectives' Lt. Dennis Rosenbaum during a news conference last week.

Police said the senior citizen was walking along the driveway between Erdrick and Montague streets near Wellington, in Mayfair, on her way home from the ShopRite on Frankford Avenue just before 10 a.m. on New Year's Eve when she was accosted by the gunman, who shot her once in the cheek and stole her purse full of cash and her cellphone before taking off in a silver or white, 2004 to 2006 Nissan Maxima with some front grill damage and a sunroof.

The victim's daughter Edie Ritchie said her mother, who still works, had just cashed a paycheck before going out to grab groceries.

Before pulling the trigger, the man -- described as being in his late 20s to early 30s with black hair; standing around 5-feet, 10 inches tall; and weighing between 220 to 240 pounds; who wore a red knit cap and sported a trimmed beard -- told the woman "I'll shoot you," police said.

"She struggled with him and he pulled her into the car, during that course of action she was shot in the face," said Rosenbaum. "Luckily it wasn't life-threatening, it was a through-and through shot."

Police said the man dragged the victim for a few feet before speeding off.

Incredibly, after being shot, the victim managed to continue walking and make it back to her home about two and half blocks away, where she put away her groceries before calling for family for help, police said. The family then called 911.

"This is a very strong woman," said Rosenbaum.

The woman continues to recover from the bullet wound to her right cheek.

The Citizens Crime Commission kicked in $1,000 to go with a $5,000 reward from the fraternal order of police in hopes of capturing the man wanted for robbery and aggravated assault.

Anyone with information in the shooting should contact Northeast Detectives at 215-686-3153/54. If you spot the suspect you should consider him dangerous and should call 911, said police. Tips can also be sent to the crime commission at 215-546-TIPS of police at 215-686-TIPS.

Firefighters rescued a 6-month-old German Shepherd that fell through the ice on a New Jersey lake Friday, authorities say.

The pup fell into Lindy's Lake in West Milford about 75 yards from the shore line shortly after 8 a.m.

Video of the rescue shows the pup desperately paddling far out in the lake as rescuers tied to harnesses crawl out on the snow-covered surface to reach the dog.

The two firefighters made their way out to the terrified pooch and tried to rescue the puppy, but the puppy was scared and tried to attack both rescuers, officials said. They didn't give up -- and soon the puppy was pulled out of the water.

Once out of the water, the pooch shakes the water off and seems a little wobbly on its feet, then starts trotting around on the snow-covered part of the lake. Eventually, the pup is reunited with its owner.

A homeowner in Frankford was forced to run for her life when part of her home came tumbling down.

It happened Friday evening along the 2100 block of Orthodox Street in Philadelphia's Frankford section.

The owner of the home that came partially tumbling down told NBC 10's Aundrea Cline-Thomas that she was on her porch filling in cracks with foam when she heard cracking and knew she was in danger.

She was able to grab her dog and get out of harms way before debris crashed down.

Neighbors in adjoining homes also were forced to evacuate as officials looked into the stability of the homes.

Officials from licenses and inspections said the rain could make the home collapse even more and put a fence around the area for safety.

Three families were assisted by the American Red Cross and three pets were assisted by Red Paw Emergency Relief Team.

Girl Battling Cancer Honored for Raising $250K

Maya Rigler, the 10-year-old from Montgomery County, Pennsylvania battling cancer for the second time, surpassed her fundraising goal and will be honored for it.

Donations in a fundraiser created by Maya and Alex's Lemonade Stand surpassed her goal of $250,000.

Alex's Lemonade will honor Maya as the stand host of the year at this year's Lemon Ball.

Maya has an orange-sized tumor on her pancreas formed by a rare type of cancer called atypical Ewing's sarcoma. Doctors must shrink the tumor before they can remove it. The girl already fought and won a fight against a Wilms tumor on her kidney when she was 2-years-old.

Despite her own health scare, Maya continues her work to help other kids like her by raising money for pediatric cancer research.

"She said that maybe the reason that she got through this is so she could help other kids," said Maya's father Peter Rigler. "It was a pretty powerful thing to say."

NBC10 told Maya's story last February and less than 24 hours later, donations to her virtual fundraising stand jumped by more than $10,000.

Her initial fundraising goal was $100,000, but that goal quickly raised to $250,000. As of Friday night, she had raised more than $252,000.

"She's a pretty determined little girl so I'm not so surprised," said Maya'a mother Stacy Rigler.

On Saturday, Maya will receive her recognition.
