Car Pursued by Police Hits Woman

A 79-year-old woman walking her dog was seriously injured when she was struck by a car police were chasing Thursday in New Jersey, authorities said.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, a gold 2002 Nissan Sentra jumped a curb and hit the woman just before noon near Branch Brook Park in Newark. The car also struck a Mercury Sable, injuring a driver and passenger.

All three were taken to a nearby hospital, where the woman remains in serious condition, prosecutors said. The others had less serious injuries. The woman's dog is also said to have survived.

Mike Wiston, who saw the aftermath of the crash from his apartment, said he recognized the woman from the neighborhood.

"Every time I ran into her I either saw her with a shopping cart or with her dog in a stroller and she used to walk with that support," Wiston told NBC 4 New York. "The driver should have stopped for her because she had a walking problem, she wouldn't have been able to run even if she saw the car coming."

Authorities have not released the names of anyone involved or any information regarding what sparked the police chase.

The 20-year-old driver of the Nissan is in police custody but has yet to be charged, officials said.

Low-Flying Drone Causes Stir at NJ Football Scrimmage

A low-flying drone came within feet of striking Jersey Shore high school football players earlier this week.

Ocean City High School was hosting Middle Township for a scrimmage Sunday night when players began to notice something overhead.

”All of a sudden everyone starts saying, ‘look,’” said an Ocean City quarterback Andrew Donoghue.

It was a remote control drone hovering overhead.

“As we were in our huddle it started to come over top of us,” Donoghue said.

“There were times when it was very low – no more than 10 feet above the players,” said Ocean City Red Raiders coach Kevin Smith.

“He’s just teasing them now,” a person can be heard saying in video of the incident.

Fearing for players safety and unsure what to do, referees put the scrimmage on hold for about 20 minutes.

The drone was an annoyance but was it illegally used? The Federal Aviation Administration strongly encourages recreational drone users to not fly near people or within five miles of an airport – Ocean City Municipal Airport is near the field.

Someone called 911 to report the drone but by the time officers arrived the drone – and its operator – were gone. Even if officers had nabbed the drone enthusiast, they wouldn’t have been able to do much.

“These are only guidelines, we as law enforcement are waiting for the lawmakers to give us some enforcement powers to regulate the use of these drones,” said Ocean City Police Capt. Steve Ang.

If a drone actually injured a player or fan, then the drone user would have faced charges, said police.

Investigators say a man left behind a crucial piece of evidence after a carjacking and kidnapping in Philadelphia.

The series of events began about 12:45 a.m. Friday when police spotted a Mustang driving erratically in the 1700 block of S. 17th Street in South Philadelphia.

Officers signaled the driver to pull over. The driver initially obliged, but as officers were approaching the car, the suspect drove away.

A short time later, the suspect crashed the Mustang into several parked cars in the 1900 block of Camac Street.

The suspect got out of the Mustang and ran to a nearby car that had four people inside. The male driver was pulled out of the car by the suspect and a male passenger got out to help the driver.

The suspect then got into the car, which still had two female passengers in the backseat, and sped away.

The suspect eventually bailed from the car at 5th and Shunk Streets and ran away.

The females were not injured.

“There’s going to be additional charges of kidnapping because after carjacking the vehicle, he took off with two females in the backseat,” Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

Investigators say they know who they are searching for because the suspect left behind a key piece of evidence.

“They saw an inmate identification card in plain view, and that inmate identification card picture did match the description of the person who the 17th District office initially attempted to stop,” Small explained.

The manhunt for the suspect is ongoing.

Philadelphia will play host to the largest World Meeting of Families [WMOF] conference to date this September.

The number of attendees "just hit 17,000" Donna Farrell, executive director of the WMOF, told a room full of journalists Friday at the Religion Newswriters Association Conference in Center City. When Milan hosted the WMOF three years ago, 7,000 people attended.

"And for those of you who've been covering us here in Philadelphia, you know, we needed this," Farrell said, adding the "World Meeting of Families by the numbers is pretty stunning."

-- People are coming from more than 100 countries
-- Every continent except Antarctica is represented
-- More than 10,000 volunteers are committed

Farrell expects the four-day event, held from Sept. 22 - 25 in the Pennsylvania Convention Center "to be something really magical."

When Pope Francis arrives that weekend, Philly will essentially host "an incredible block party of joy, pilgrimage and excitement," Farrell said.

A car overturned – completely blocking Friday afternoon traffic – on one of the main bridges used to get to the Jersey Shore.

The wreck closed the eastbound Walt Whitman Bridge over the Delaware River around 4:30 p.m.

As SkyForce10 hovered overhead a short time alter, a tow truck could be seen working to clear the scene as a long delay backed up into South Philadelphia. It didn't take crews long to right the car and clear the scene but the delays remained.

The route is popular with people going down the Jersey Shore or home from work.

No word yet on injuries.

Toddler Wanders from Daycare: Mom

A New Jersey toddler wandered out of his daycare center and walked home without employees noticing, his astonished mother complained Friday.

Yomara Ortiz said she dropped off her 3-year-old son Dariell at KinderWorld EduCare Center in Hamilton, New Jersey, as she does every day. Not long after arriving at her job, a family member called to say that Dariell suddenly appeared at the front door of his home.

"I couldn't believe it," Ortiz said. "I thought she was playing a joke on me."

Ortiz lives only two blocks from the daycare center, but the toddler had to cross a busy street to get home.

Daycare staff had no idea that the 3-year-old had wandered off, Ortiz told NBC 4 New York.

"She didn't know where he was," Ortiz said of the staff member's response. "She had nothing to say. She just apologized and said it wouldn't happen again."

It won't, Ortiz said, adding that she will no longer leave her son at KinderWorld.

The daycare center was open Friday and taking care of children. Employees decline to speak to NBC 4.

Ortiz filed a formal complaint against KinderWorld and a state inspector visited the site Friday.

'Right Place, Right Time:' Officers Save Girl From Drowning

Two men used to putting their own lives on the line heard a mother’s screams then jumped into action to save a girl from drowning at a South Jersey campground.

The ordeal played out Friday afternoon at the pool at Echo Farms Campground in Upper Township, Cape May County. Laila Harper was playing with a snorkel in the pool while her mother put sunscreen on Laila's little sister, when her grandmother said the 4-year-old went under in 3-feet of water.

Joe Heffernan dove in and helped the girl’s mother get her out.

“She was completely blue and lifeless,” Heffernan told NBC10's Ted Greenberg a short time after the rescue. “For the life of God she was somewhere else for a good two to three minutes.”

Luckily for Laila, Heffernan, an 18-year-veteran of the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department and former Millbourne Borough Police Chief was there to perform CPR.

“I was doing what I’ve been taught to do for the last 30 years,” he said. “We train, and train, and train for situations like this.”

Retired SEPTA Police officer Ed Reynolds jumped in and began chest compressions as Heffernan performed mouth-to-mouth.

“Instinct just took over,” said Reynolds.

“After about three minutes of doing CPR, she finally started to get her color back and her airway cleared and she regained consciousness,” said Heffernan.

When medics arrived, the girl was conscious again. They initially took the girl to Shore Medical Center in Somers Point but then transferred her to St. Christopher hospital for Children in Philadelphia for observation, said the family.

“Thank God all my experiences had prepared me because just the look on that mother’s face when I handed her her baby back, sitting up and crying was just – i got the chills just talking about it,” said Heffernan.

The pool has signs stating that there is no lifeguard on duty.

“In the right place at the right time,” said Reynolds. “Somebody was looking out.”

The save wasn't lost on the girl's family.

"I can't say enough for them," said a teary Kathy Harper. "They saved my granddaughter's life."

“Sometimes it’s a miracle where you’re placed but I was happy to do it and I’m really happy that mom got her daughter back,” said Heffernan.
