Salmonella Fears in Macadamia Nuts

A company that distributes to stores on the East Coast is recalling its macadamia nuts over concerns about salmonella.

Mahina Mele Farms, which distributes primarily to retailers on the East Coast and in Hawaii, where it is based, recalled the 6- and 16-ounce packages of unsalted and salted Izzie Macs! Macadamia Nuts after routine Food and Drug Administration testing found salmonella in some products, the FDA said.

The company's bulk Macadamia nuts, sold in 5-pound bags, and Baby Bruddah's Mac Nut Buttah and Chocolate Mac Nut Buttah, sold in 12-ounce packages, are also affected by the recall. The FDA says the products were distributed to retailers from May 26 to May 29.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the products, but the company said it was recalling all products processed from the particular batch of nuts that tested positive for salmonella "in the interest of public health and safety."

Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, vomiting, fever, nausea and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the bacteria can lead to severe infections or death. Young children and the elderly, or people with weakened immune systems, are at higher risk for more severe reactions.

A 27-year-old man has been charged with two counts of attempted homicide in a shooting outside a hip-hop concert at a popular New Jersey venue that critically injured two young men and caused panic among the crowd earlier this week, police say.

Quran Powell of Holmdel was arrested Thursday in East Orange and is also charged with weapons charges in the shooting outside the PNC Bank Arts Center on Monday.

Police allege that Powell was the gunman who opened fire outside the venue where rappers Big Sean and J.Cole were performing, injuring two men, 23 and 24. The gunfire also caused panic among the crowd.

Eighteen-year-old Omayma Bougdour told the Daily News that gunfire began after an argument broke out in the parking lot. She says "everyone started sprinting and stampeding."

One of the men was "not responsive," and the other was breathing heavily and begging for a drink of water, she said.

Another witness, Mike Lefanto, told the newspaper he was walking to his car with his 13-year-old daughter when he saw the two victims speaking to a woman in the parking lot, "talking about her body." He said a man soon approached the victims and fired about seven shots.

"He took those two dudes out right away," Lefanto said. "It looked like he knew what he was doing."

State troopers, using K-9 units and a helicopter, scoured a wooded area near the amphitheater immediately after the shooting to no avail.

After identifying Powell as a suspect, police say the executed a search warrant on his home. He wasn't there, but they learned that he was allegedly hiding at an apartment in East Orange. He was arrested there without incident.

He's being held at the Monmouth County Jail in lieu of $750,000 bail. It's not clear if he has an attorney.

Big Sean and J. Cole are touring together. They perform at Madison Square Garden in New York Tuesday.

The Pope’s visit to Philadelphia already has city public school students looking toward a long weekend but that time off could soon be extended.

Philadelphia School District Superintendent William Hite put in a request to close schools on Thursday, Sept. 24, said district spokesman Fernando Gallard.

If approved by the School Reform Commission would turn the three-day break into a five-day hiatus from the classroom since the district is already set to be closed on Sept. 25 due to the Papal visit and on Sept. 23 for the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.

The SRC is expected to make vote on the extra day off on Aug. 20, said Gallard.

A disturbance call in South Jersey led to a drug bust that included 117 bags of heroin, multiple pieces of crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia.

Members of Manchester Township Police made the discovery when they responded a home on Housen Street in the Summit Park section of the Township Wednesday. Upon arriving at the house in question, they found multiple dogs acting aggressively, which appeared to be the reason for the call.

While at the house, three officers found Bowen Stephenson, 22, hiding in one of the bedrooms, said police.

The police spoke with Stephenson and determined he had provided officers with false information in order to avoid being arrested. The officers also observed several doses of heroin and a syringe, leading them to further search the home.

Stephenson was arrested on multiple drug charges and sent to Ocean County jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.

Rain at the Shore & Beaches?

$

0

An area of low pressure will be South of the area on Friday -- this will give the highest rain chances to Delaware and New Jersey through the day Friday, with the bulk of the moisture staying even farther south.

There’s always a chance with this weather set-up that some heavy rain could lead to localized street flooding, especially if your area is prone to flooding. Computer models are in better agreement now that the low will track farther south of the area, so rain should mainly be confined to New Jersey and Delaware, although some showers could easily move into the Philadelphia area. Driest spots will be areas north and west of Philadelphia -- the Lehigh Valley and Poconos will have much lower rain chances, around 20 percent.

Once Saturday morning rolls around, an area of high pressure to our west will help move this low offshore. As of now, it looks to move out through the day Saturday, and with the placement of it being farther south and east in the Atlantic, the areas which could still see lingering rain Saturday morning would be along the Jersey Shore and possibly Delaware beaches. A few models still move the area of low pressure out more slowly, which would mean longer periods of rain for the shore on Saturday, but those models are becoming the minority now.

Given the atmospheric set-up, if the low moves out on time Saturday (which more models are hinting toward) conditions look to improve during the day along the shore. Philadelphia area and north and west should have a drier, mostly sunny day. The movement of this weather pattern will still need close watching come Friday evening.

Sunday will be a mostly sunny day for everyone with some afternoon clouds developing.

Friday:
Poconos
: Sun & clouds, 77 degrees, 20-percent shower chance
Philadelphia: Mostly cloudy, 82 degrees, 50-percent shower chance
Shore/Beaches: Cloudy, 78 degrees, 80-percent rain likely, east wind of 10 to 20 mph

Saturday:
Poconos: Mostly sunny, 77 degrees
Philadelphia: Mostly sunny, 84 degrees
Shore/Beaches: Clouds breaking, 40-percent chance of morning showers, 80 degrees, northeast wind 20 to 30 mph

Sunday:
Poconos: Mostly sunny, 79 degrees
Philadelphia: Mostly sunny, 85 degrees
Shore/Beaches: Mostly sunny, 81 degrees, northeast wind 10 to 20 mph

A service dog is being hailed a hero after she jumped into action and saved her blind owner’s life by alerting authorities to a house fire in Philadelphia Thursday morning.

The fire started inside a home on the 4300 block of Oakmont Street in the city’s Holmesburg section. Fire officials say the homeowner, a woman in her 60’s who is blind, was inside at the time. The woman’s service dog Yolanda immediately dialed 911 on a specialized phone.

Firefighters responded to the scene and controlled the blaze. The woman was taken to Nazareth Hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.

It wasn’t the first time Yolanda saved her owner’s life. Jen Leary, the founder of the Red Paw Emergency Relief Team, told NBC10 Yolanda also called 911 last year when her owner fell down inside her home and lost consciousness.

Yolanda and her owner were both displaced by the blaze and are being assisted by Red Paw Emergency Relief Team and the American Red Cross.

Witness to Police: POI Sexually Assaulted Missing Boy

WARNING: The details of this story are graphic and may be disturbing to some readers

Two days after speaking publicly for the first time, a former prostitute revealed new details to police about a person of interest in the disappearance of an 11-year-old boy 24 years ago.

"You've been looking for me," Daniel Coll told Middle Township Police. "I'm here."

Coll is a former prostitute who claims Thomas Butcavage Jr. was a frequent client of his. Butcavage, a convicted sex offender, is one of several persons of interest in the disappearance of 11-year-old Mark Himebaugh in 1991. Some people who knew Butcavage believe there’s a strong resemblance between him and the sketch of a man spotted talking with Himebaugh shortly before he vanished near his Middle Township, New Jersey home.

Coll told NBC10 Tuesday he was with Butcavage the night of Feb. 14, 1993 inside his Haverford Township apartment. That’s when he said Butcavage showed him a graphic video of him sexually assaulting a boy that he's positive was Himebaugh.

“A little boy who was shackled, handcuffed and had a ball gag in his mouth,” Coll said. “I remember looking at the little boy’s face and just the look on his eyes. I mean completely, you ever see fear? Just through the eyes. Man, the little boy was scared to death.”

Coll then recalled the disturbing conversation he had with Butcavage as he watched the video.

“I said, ‘that looks like the little boy from South Jersey,’” Coll said. “Tommy told me it was him. He confessed to me and said it was him. I said, ‘What did you do with him?’ He said, ‘Well, I did like I did the rest of them. I dispose them.’ ‘What do you mean the rest of them?’ He said, ‘Well, I got five or six other kids I did.’ He kept reassuring me, ‘I need you. I need you to help me get little kids.’”

Coll said he contacted police the next day and told them about what Butcavage allegedly showed him. Coll’s tip led to a police search through Butcavage’s apartment in 1993, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Butcavage denied any involvement in Himebaugh’s disappearance however and he was never charged in relation to the case. Six years later he pleaded guilty to numerous sex crime charges involving young boys in Chester County. He remains in prison.

On Thursday Coll spoke with Middle Township Police, who have renewed their efforts to solve the Himebaugh case. Middle Township Police Chief Christopher Leusner said the new information from Coll is extremely valuable in their investigation.

"We might conduct additional interviews," Chief Leusner said. "We might visit businesses in the area. I'm very happy that he came down. We've been trying to get in touch with him. It's a little challenging. Thanks to your coverage we were able to make contact with him."

Coll, who is terminally ill, told NBC10 he decided to speak publicly about Butcavage for the first time after seeing our recent reports on the case. Prior to speaking with police Thursday, he also told us something he's never shared with investigators. Coll claims Butcavage once told him during a prior encounter that he had stayed at a camp ground in Middle Township located less than two miles from Himebaugh's neighborhood.

Police are hoping to talk with more people who may have seen Butcavage in Cape May County in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s.

Anyone with information in the case can call Middle Township Police at 609-465-8700 or the NCMEC hotline at 1-800-THE-LOST.

If your loved one has gone missing, here's a list of things you should do right away.

On Monday, SEPTA launched a one-day online lottery to sell round-trip Regional Rail passes for the weekend of papal visit. SEPTA sent an email confirmation on Thursday to the lucky winners of the passes. Winners have three days to accept and pay for the passes. Each pass costs $10 a day.

SEPTA says 328,045 passes were requested, but the transportation company capped the ridership at 175,000 for each day the Pope is in town.

A man is recovering but still alive after he was lost for three days in the woods.

On Tuesday around 5:45 a.m. 61-year-old James Wharton of Berlin, New Jersey called Winslow Police reporting he had become lost in the woods after walking home from a friend’s house in the area of Berlin-Cross Keys Road and Sharp Avenue in Winslow Township. Wharton called 911 again around 6:40 a.m. to report he was still lost. As police tried to locate Wharton his cellphone died.

On Thursday volunteers and rescuers searched deeper into the wooded area. They finally found Wharton around 7:30 p.m. Officials told NBC10 Wharton was dehydrated but was in good spirits and not seriously injured. He was taken to Virtua Hospital, Voorhees for observation.
