An elevator accident at a once iconic Center City Philadelphia store left three people hospitalized Friday morning.

A freight elevator inside the former Strawbridge and Clothier building at 810 Filbert Street suddenly dropped around 10:40 a.m., according to Philadelphia firefighters.

Fire Department Executive Chief Peter Crespo said witnesses told firefighters that the elevator dropped about 10 to 15 feet and the doors wouldn’t open.

The group got themselves out of the broken elevator, said Crespo.

All three people suffered minor injuries that required treatment at Jefferson University Hospital.

City Licensees and Inspections investigated why the elevator failed.

A teen who lost control of her SUV during the evening rush may be paralyzed, according to sources.

The 17-year-old girl was rescued from her overturned 2002 Yukon when it came to a stop on the banks of the Schuylkill River after tumbling down an embankment on Martin Luther King Drive in Fairmount Park just after 5 p.m. Friday.

SkyForce10 was on the scene as rescue crews cut off the SUV’s roof and extracted the victim.

Police say the teen lost control of her vehicle causing it to veer off the road, down the embankment – stopping short of the river.

Passersby who saw the crash, rushed to help the trapped teen.

“I just went down there,” said Nurse Brandee Neiderhofer. “There was another doctor that was running too, so we both went down there to help her.”

Once free, the unidentified teen was transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where police tell NBC10 she is now surrounded by loved ones.

Sources say that the girl will likely be paralyzed from the waist down.

No word on what caused the teen to lose control of her vehicle. An investigation is underway.

MLK Drive has been closed since the accident.

NJ Preschooler Who Died Had Enterovirus D68: CDC

A New Jersey preschooler who died more than a week ago had enterovirus D-68, the United States Center for Disease Control confirmed Friday night.

The 4-year-old attended Yardville Elementary School in Hamilton Township and died at home on Thursday, September 25.

“Our thoughts remain with the family at this very difficult time,” said Health Commissioner Mary E. O’Dowd. “While the child has tested positive for EV-D68, the cause of death has not yet been determined and it is unclear if EV-D68 played a direct role or was a contributing factor in his death.”

The Mercer County's child's death is the first child death involving EV-D68 in New Jersey, according to the CDC.

The virus has been sweeping across the country over the past two months infecting nearly 300 people in 40 states and the District of Columbia, according to CDC stats. New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware are among those states.

The virus is transmitted through close contact with an infected person or touching contaminated surfaces. The CDC says good hygiene is the best defense and recommends washing hands with soap and water for 20 seconds, disinfecting surfaces and avoiding kissing, hugging or sharing cups or utensils with sick people.

A call center will be open for questions and concerns regarding EV-D68 from 9 a.m. until noon. The number is 609-586-0311.

School Coach Found With Steroids

A 38-year-old New Jersey high school football coach faces numerous charges related to steroid possession after he was allegedly found with two boxes of steroids and more than a dozen syringes during a traffic stop.

Prosecutors say Bridgewater police spotted a pickup truck driven by Charlie Garcia, assistant football coach for the Sayreville High School football team, in a motel parking lot notorious for drug activity late last month. After the patrol car passed Garcia's pickup, prosecutors say Garcia drove toward the parking lot exit, then abruptly made a U-turn and went back into the lot.

A short time later, an officer saw the pickup truck turn onto Route 22 West and, after allegedly observing an improper lane change, among other motor vehicle infractions, turned on the sirens to pull over the truck.

Garcia allegedly gave the officer a report about his previous whereabouts that conflicted with what the officer who saw his pickup truck in the motel parking lot had witnessed. A K-9 unit was called, and the dog gave positive alerts for criminally dangerous substances in both the driver and passenger doors, prosecutors said. Officers asked Garcia if they could search his vehicle and he consented.

Police recovered two sealed boxes of 400 mg steroids and 14 individually sealed and capped syringes, according to court documents.

Garcia was charged with possession of steroids and hypodermic needles, and given traffic tickets for driving with an expired license and failure to signal a lane change, among other violations.

Information on Garcia's attorney wasn't immediately available.

Thursday night's football game against South Brunswick was canceled because of "unforeseen circumstances." The school board president told NJ.com it was not related to Garcia's arrest.

Enterovirus' Role in NJ Child's Death Unclear: Officials

A New Jersey child who tested positive for a virus causing severe respiratory illness across the country has died, although it's not clear what role the virus played in the child's death, state health officials said Friday.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told New Jersey health officials that a Mercer County child tested positive for enterovirus 68 and died last week, the state Department of Health said in a news release.

Department spokeswoman Donna Lensner would not provide any other specifics about the child, although she confirmed the death is the first in New Jersey of someone who tested positive for the virus since early August, when health officials around the country noticed a spike in harsh respiratory illnesses in children. They determined enterovirus 68 was to blame.

"Our thoughts remain with the family at this very difficult time," said New Jersey Health Commissioner Mary E. O'Dowd. "While the child has tested positive for EV-D68, the cause of death has not yet been determined and it is unclear if EV-D68 played a direct role or was a contributing factor in his death."

The CDC says at least four people in the U.S. infected with the virus have died, all in September, but the agency also stresses it's not clear if the virus caused the deaths. It has sickened at least 500 people in 42 states and Washington, D.C. -- almost all of them children.

The New Jersey department said the CDC also reported another confirmed case of the virus in a Middlesex County child, bringing the total count in the state to nine people who have been infected with enterovirus 68. Those cases are in Camden, Burlington, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Essex, Passaic and Sussex.

The enterovirus germ is not new; most people who catch the virus experience only a runny nose and low-grade fever. It was first identified in 1962 and has caused clusters of illness before.

This year, the virus has gotten more attention because it has been linked to hundreds of severe illnesses. Beginning last month, hospitals in Kansas City, Missouri, and Chicago have received a flood of children with trouble breathing.

To avoid getting the virus, health officials recommend:

  • Wash hands with soap and water.

  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

  • Avoid kissing, hugging, and sharing cups, plates and utensils with people who are sick.
  • Disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick.

Driver Trapped in Overturned Car for Hours: Reports

A vehicle tumbled down an embankment in Philadelphia's Wissahickon Valley Park early Saturday morning, trappingthe driver in the overturned car for hours.

Officials responded to reports of an overturned vehicle on Forbidden Drive near Bells Mill Road in the city's Chestnut Hill neighborhood around 6:30 a.m. Saturday.

Initial reports indicated the driver, who was transported to Albert Einstein Medical Center, was stuck for about six hours after the accident occurred.

The dense woods of Wissahickon Valley Park make it difficult to obtain cell phone service, which contributed to how long the man was trapped, police said.

Typically vehicles are not permitted on Forbidden Drive, which is often used as a running and biking trail.

It is unclear why the man was driving on the road and whether he suffered any injuries.
