Police investigating a homicide inside a Philadelphia home that uncovered a marijuana growing operation in the basement.

Philadelphia Police responded to a home on the 200 block of W Lindley Street in the city’s Logan section just after 11 a.m. Thursday.

Inside officers found a 34-year-old man, sitting on a couch, suffering from a gunshot wound to his head. Medics pronounced the man dead a short time later.

As police investigated the home they found a small marijuana growing operation in the basement and later found more drugs growing on the upper floor, according to sources with knowledge of the investigation.

Homeland Security investigators also came to the scene to check out some chemicals found at the home. Sources told NBC10’s Deanna Durante the chemicals appeared to be related to construction being done at the home and posed no threat.

Philadelphia Police remained on the scene for hours searching for clues.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Philadelphia Police.

Someone stabbed a man to death in a home a short distance from Philadelphia’s Drexel University Thursday night.

Philadelphia Police responded to a home on the 3200 block of Summer Street in Powelton Village just after 7:30 p.m.

"It appears to have been a violent incident," Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Inside the home, officers found a 57-year-old man stabbed multiple times in the head, neck and torso leaning against some kitchen cabinets. Medics arrived and declared the man dead a short time later, according to investigators.

There was blood on walls and the floor in multiple homes.

Small said a 3-year-old child was asleep in the home at the time of the attack and two women were also in the home. None of them were hurt..

"We know that there was some sort of argument... that resulted in this stabbing," said Small.

Police took a 59-year-old man -- described by witnesses as the stabber -- into custody for questioning. Police found a bloody knife in the home.

The home sits less than a block from Drexel University. Small said the incident had nothing to do with the campus.

Two landscapers died after becoming trapped in a backyard trench while working on a construction project in New Jersey Wednesday, authorities said.

The body of the first worker was recovered that afternoon. Boonton Mayor Cy Wekilsky told News 12 the body of the second worker has also been recovered.

The workers got trapped in a dirt trench in the backyard on Rockaway Valley Road while they were working on a French drain construction project around 4 p.m., police said.

Four landscapers were excavating a drainage pipe when the trench began to give way and one of the workers got trapped, according to Fortunato. Another man jumped in to try and save him, and the two got stuck in the trench, estimated to be at least 10 feet deep.

A third worker had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.

Family members identified one of the two victims as Oscar Portillo. Relatives said the men were from Honduras and close friends who worked for the landscaping company for several years.

"They're here to work, they're here for their families, sending money back," said Joshua Neves of Morristown. "It's a tragedy."

Police haven't identified the landscaping company.

Officer Arrested, Charged With Assaults on Partner

Philadelphia Police arrested one of their own after an officer allegedly assaulted his female partner while on-duty. And investigators believe it wasn't the first time the officer struck the woman.

Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey suspended Officer Kenneth Allen after police internal affairs arrested the three-year veteran of the force Thursday afternoon.

Investigators said that Allen, 24, assaulted a female officer Friday. After an internal investigation, police found out that Allen allegedly hit the same woman on at least three other occasion, police said.

Earlier this week, Lt. John Stanford told NBC10 that two 18th District officers got into an argument Friday near police headquarters while they were both on-duty and in uniform. The argument ultimately escalated into a fight.

Sources with knowledge of the incident told NBC10 the two officers were having an affair. According to investigators, the female officer, who has worked in the department for nearly 20 years, suffered facial injuries, including fractures and bruising, and was treated at a local hospital.

The male officer, later identified as Allen, was placed on desk duty as internal affairs investigated.

"Any time you have a situation like this it's something very serious," Stanford said. "The department looks at it in a very serious way. It's not going to be something taken lightly."

Police charged Allen with four counts each of aggravated assault, simple assault and reckless endangerment. He also faces related counts.

Ramsey said he intends to fire Allen after a 30-day suspension.

This Man Attacked Woman, Put Dirt in Her Mouth: Police

Philadelphia Police released an artist's sketch Thursday of a suspect investigators said attacked a woman out for an afternoon walk along one of Philadelphia's most popular trails, pushing her to the ground and putting dirt in her mouth.

A 51-year-old woman told police she went for a walk around 4:30 p.m. Friday on a trail near Gate House Lane inside the Wissahickon Creek Park section of Fairmount Park in the Chestnut Hill section of the city.

After walking for about a half hour, the woman noticed a man in his late 20s passing by her on the trail, police said earlier in the week.

The man -- described by police as a large built man standing about 6-feet tall -- then came up from behind and grabbed the woman, police said. He demanded money from the victim but she told him she didn't have any on her, according to authorities.

The victim told police that the suspect told her to empty her pockets before he pushed her to the ground. Once on the ground the man began choking the victim around her neck and shoved dirt in her mouth. During the attack, the man asked the woman for sex, according to police.

After nearly a 10 minute struggle the woman broke free and called police on a passerby's cellphone. Police said no sex attack occurred.

Police said the suspect wore a red polo shirt with white writing, tan pants and a baseball cap -- possibly green in color -- during the attack.

Fireman Poses as Officer During Sex Assault: Police

A Philadelphia firefighter posed as a Philadelphia Police officer during a sexual assault, according to investigators.

Fire Lt. Jemal Johnson forced a woman into his pickup truck around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday at 13th and Ruscomb streets in the Logan section of the city, said Philadelphia Police.

“Once inside the vehicle he tells her that he would not arrest her if she performs some sort of sex act,” said Philadelphia Police Lt. John Stanford.

The 48-year-old victim followed Johnson’s demands but was eventually able to get out of the truck and call for help, said investigators.

“Once she escapes from the vehicle she calls 911,” said Stanford.

Investigators said Johnson was still wearing his fire uniform pants when officers arrested him. Investigators said those pants could have helped him pose as an officer of the law.

Johnson, 45, is an 18-year veteran of the fire department assigned to Ladder Company 14 in North Philadelphia.

He posted 10 percent of $100,000 bail after a Philadelphia judge arraigned him on sexual assault, unlawful restraint, indecent assault, reckless endangerment and related charges, according to court records.

No one answered the door at Johnson’s home Thursday night.

When reached by NBC10.com’s Nefertiti Jaquez Thursday night, the Philadelphia Fire Department wasn’t ready to comment on the case.

1 State Bleeds Green But It's Not Pa.

Everyone knows Philly is home to the Eagles but another state may be bigger fans of the birds than Pennsylvania.

Dick’s Sporting Goods found that the most Eagles’ jerseys were not sold in Pennsylvania but in Delaware.

The store compiled their numbers to make the map shown above that illustrates the most popular football team in each state. (Whoever knew that people in Montana loved the Oakland Raiders so much?)

Look closely and you see that the First State is colored Eagles green. You will also notice that Pennsylvania is shaded gold representing the Steelers as its most popular team (when it comes to jersey sales at one sports retailer).

Eagles’ jerseys were the second most popular in Pennsylvania but a representative from Dick’s said they were a “considerable amount behind” Steelers’ sales.

The Eagles were also No. 2 in New Jersey, beat out by the Giants but not the Jets.
