Mo'ne Davis Strikes Out Fallon on "Tonight"

Little League World Series sensation Mo’ne Davis brought her pitching skills to the “The Tonight Show” stage where she struck out host Jimmy Fallon in a game of wiffle ball.

The 13-year-old pitching star from Philadelphia was a bit shy when first introduced.

Fallon asked what her favorite post-game meal is — naturally a Philly cheese steak — and about her first day of school.

“It was okay,” she said, adding that her friends are proud of her and some were even starstruck when they saw her Thursday.

Davis has been at the center of a media whirlwind after she became the first girl to pitch a shut-out game in the Little League World Series. She is the 18th girl to play in the series.

In the past month, Davis has graced the cover of Sports Illustrated and thrown out the first pitch at Dodger Stadium. On the "Tonight Show," Davis took a makeshift pitcher's mound in a strike out challenge against Fallon.

“If you strike me out, I’ll buy you a cheese steak the next time I’m in Philly,” Fallon told her. “If you don’t, then you buy me one.”

Fallon brought Davis' catcher to the stage, Scott Bandura, who's been playing with the all-star pitcher since age 7.

Davis threw a variety of pitches, each one getting more aggressive than the next.

Her last pitch hit Fallon, and he threw his helmet to the ground and approached her, joking, "wanna go?" He hugged her, instead.

"You're the best, congratulations," he said.

Last week, Fallon mentioned Davis in his weekly "Thank You Notes," saying, “Thanks for showing the world that throwing like a girl can actually be a good thing. Right, dad?”

Testing confirmed Friday that a raccoon discovered near a family's dog in the yard of an Atlantic County home was rabid.

The resident found the lethargic raccoon outside his home on Shadeland Avenue in Pleasantville and contacted authorities.

Animal control officers removed the animal, which was sent to the state lab to test for the viral disease.

No humans were exposed to rabies, an investigation shows. The dog from Shadeland Avenue was current with its rabies vaccination, but will receive a booster vaccination and be placed under a 45-day observation period.

After officials confirmed the raccoon was rabid Friday, they issued a warning to neighbors urging them to stay away from wild animals and keep their own pets' vaccinations up-to-date.

"Dogs and cats who receive an initial rabies vaccination are not considered immunized until 28 days after the vaccine has been administered," the notice reads. "It is strongly recommended that any animal newly vaccinated or those too young to receive the vaccine.. not be left outdoors unattended."

A free clinic is held at the Atlantic County  Animal Shelter at 240 Old Turnpike Road, Pleasantville, each month. The next session will take place Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

County officials report several other rabies cases involving a bat, a fox, two skunks and four raccoons occurred in 2014 prior to this incident.

Parents are encouraged to teach children to stay away from wild, stray or aggressive animals, the notice said. Anyone bit by an animal, should wash the wound immediately with soap and water and seek medical attention.

Heavy downpours and thunderstorms are moving through the region as a system continues east from the Great Lakes.

The entire area is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 p.m. Storms already moved through Western Chester County Saturday afternoon. The system is capable of producing quarter-size hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 miles per hour.

A severe thunderstorm warning is also in effect for parts of Ocean and Burlington counties until 6:45 p.m. A flash flood warning is also in effect in northern Chester County until 7:45 p.m.

The storms moved into areas north and west of Philadelphia around 4 p.m. and the Philadelphia area around 5 p.m.

Officials warn the storm is dangerous. Heavy rain, strong winds, lightning and hail are expected. Residents should move indoors to a sturdy building and stay away from windows.

Most of the day, the region was hot, humid and dry with temperatures hitting a high of about 90 degrees, although the muggy conditions made it feel a few degrees warmer.

Once the storms pass, the humidity and temperatures will fall. Sunday will be mostly sunny with highs hovering around 80 degrees -- near perfect weather for the Philadelphia Eagles home opener.

Heading into the work week, expect partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the upper 70s.

Couple Gets Married After Devastating Injury

A Philadelphia couple didn’t let a vacation injury stop them from tying the knot.

On a sunny Saturday afternoon, 40-year-old Suria Nordin, said her "I Do's," to 51-year-old Kirby Smith. The Center City wedding ceremony was held on the sunny rooftop garden of the Magee Rehabilitation center, just two months after Nordin was admitted as a rehab patient.

On the engaged couple’s July vacation to Jamaica, Nordin was hurt in a pool accident, leaving her paralyzed in her legs and arms due to a spinal cord injury. The bride was flown back to Philadelphia where she was first treated at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, before transferring to Magee.

After waiting thirteen years to get married, the couple decided it was time to tie the knot, despite the recent injury.

“When I looked at her, I realized I couldn’t live without her," Smith said.“We waited long enough. Let’s do it now. Let’s do it in the hospital and keep going on. We’re going to fight it together, and she’ll get through this.”

Nordin is a CPA for the Philadelphia accounting firm, Ernst and Young. Smith is a resident of South Philly, working as a Senior VP of IT at PRWT Services.

The rooftop ceremony was decorated with sunflowers.

“We kept wishing for sunshine, and boy did we get it,” Smith said.

Sticking with the sunshine theme, the bride was rolled down the aisle in a wheelchair, carrying a bouquet of sunflowers. She wore an elegant white dress, with her veil extending off the headrest of her chair. The groom wore an off-white suit, with a bright yellow flower boutonnière.

Smith knelt down to kiss his bride, as the crowd cheered.

“I’m happy," Smith said. "I got my Suria!"

Congratulations to the newlyweds!

A man died and another was left in extremely critical condition after a double shooting at a duplex in the Cobbs Creek section of Philadelphia Saturday night.

According to investigators, an unidentified gunman arrived at an apartment building on the 5300 block of Angora Terrace shortly after 8 p.m.

Sources close to the investigation say the gunman got into an argument with Ben Cook, who lived in the apartment. He then allegedly opened fire, striking Cook in the chest and armpit. Sources say 24-year-old Eric Clenahan, who was visiting Cook at the time, ran down the stairs when he heard the commotion. The gunman then opened fire once again, striking Clenahan in the chest and head.

The suspect then tossed his gun near the scene after running out of bullets and fled on foot.

Cook died at the scene while Clenahan was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he remained in extremely critical condition Sunday.

Police recovered the weapon and are currently questioning three witnesses, including one woman who was inside the apartment when the shooting took place.

Police also found a marijuana-growing operation and about 30 marijuana plants inside the apartment. However, they have not confirmed whether the shooting was drug-related.
