Brain Tumor Survivor Inspires Young Football Players

Every summer thousands of high school football players from across the country gather in Easton, Pa. to learn from some of the best college coaches in the nation. It’s all part of Lauren’s First and Goal Football Camp, an instructional clinic and largest one-day camp in the country in which over 325 coaches teach football fundamentals to 8th through12th graders.

Yet of all the talented teens who attend the camp, the toughest and strongest of the bunch is someone who isn’t wearing a helmet or pads. That would be 17-year-old Lauren Loose, the courageous teen girl who is the heart and soul of the camp.

“If all our players were as tough as Lauren, we’d probably never lose a game,” said Lauren’s father, John Loose, a defensive coordinator at Lafayette University

Since she was 9-months-old, Lauren has endured several health problems.

“She was born with a genetic disorder called Neurofibromatosis Type 1,” said Lauren’s mother, Marianne Loose. “She has multiple brain tumors. She had a malignant sarcoma in her spine. She’s blind in one eye and visually impaired in the other. She’s had several strokes. She’s probably the strongest person I’ve ever known.”

Through all the hardships, Lauren has not only survived but has also served as a source of strength to the young athletes who attend her camp, sharing inspirational words with the players and cheering them on from the sidelines.

“She has her name on something big that hundreds of college coaches come to and support every year,” said Jayni Harris, a camp attendee and Senior at Martin Luther King High School. “That’s the motivational part for me and I think its motivation for a lot of other people here.”

The football camp and Lauren’s First and Goal charity have raised over $1.5 million in funds for pediatric brain tumor research and cancer services.

“I’ve never seen a camp like this,” said Jeff Monken, the head coach of Army Football. “There’s not any camp you go to in the country where you get in front of 300 coaches. I’m sure that a lot of coaches that come and meet Lauren get hooked and want to come back.”

As Lauren continues to beat the odds, she remains determined to make the most of the time that’s been given to her.

“A lot of times we think of what we can’t do instead of being thankful for the gifts God has given us,” Lauren said. “It makes me feel really happy and proud that they’re all here doing this, learning and discovering their gifts to help others.”

Car Crashes Into Wildwood Water Works

An out of control car went careening into the Wildwood Water Works station early Saturday morning causing damage to the 1014-year-old building.

A 2010 red Mercury Milan busted through the pumping station's front door about 6 a.m., stopping with its front wheels dangling over a railing and drop off area that houses a back up water pump.

Stanley Lovett, 25, was driving the car southbound on Route 47 when he lost control. He said at first that he fell asleep, then he told police that a deer ran in front of his car.

“The driver lost control of his vehicle coming out of the water works bend and struck the guardrail on the north side of the road,” said Middle Township police Cpl. Gino Castellano. “The vehicle then traveled back across the north and south bound lanes going through a fence and struck the front of the Wildwood Water Works building.”

The building is the sole pumping station for the utility and serves customers in Middle and Lower Townships as well as Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, West Wildwood and North Wildwood, according to a Wildwood Water Works statement.

“The station remains open and is doing its job,” said water utility General Manager Ron Grookett.

An evaluation of the pumping station’s pump motor will take place Monday.

Lovett was not hurt but was issued a summons for careless driving.

A helicopter crashed in a Cape May Court House field Monday morning, injuring a county worker.

The crew were scheduled to spray for mosquitoes in the area when the chopper went down in the Boyd Street Athletic field behind Court House Pizza off Route 9. The aircraft's front window was smashed and bits of glass and debris strewn across the grass. The tail was left hanging on the fence of someone's backyard.

"We heard a noise, kind of like — well, imagine a loud fan that was being hit by something," said David Smith, who works at the pizza shop. "We heard the sirens and ran outside and found the chopper on the ground near a house in the soccer field."

Smith says emergency crews were on the scene almost immediately.

Eyewitnesses saw two people taken away in ambulances. Middle Township police confirmed that the pilot and passenger both work for the county's mosquito control department. The passenger was hurt, with injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening. The pilot was not hurt.

Three roads were shut off from traffic during the early afternoon — Stites Avenue, Boyd Street and School House. Investigators from Middle Township police, the sheriff's office and the prosecutor's office were on the scene.

A check of government records shows the aircraft is registered to Cape May County Mosquito. The model is a Hiller UH-12E, which is a small or "light" helicopter that can carry up to three people. It's promoted as a "flying pickup truck," according to the manufacturer's website, and used primarily for agriculture, forestry and construction.

Accused to Take Stand in Child Abduction, Rape Trial

A young Philadelphia girl will not only face the woman accused of brutally raping her, now both are expected to testify in the Cobbs Creek abduction and rape trial.

Christina Regusters, who is accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting the child, who was five at the time, will testify during her criminal trial, according to defense attorney Fred Harrison.

Regusters sat silent in court during opening statements Monday with her legs crossed, wearing a black sweater and black high-top sneakers.

Harrison revealed to jurors in his opening statements that Regusters was sexually abused by her father in 2005 and raped in 2012.

Regusters is charged with abducting a kindergarten student from Bryant Elementary School in the Cobbs Creek neighborhood of Philadelphia, and sexually assaulting her with such brutality that the child has required a series of reconstructive surgeries.

As the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania began its quest for justice for the child who was held captive for 19-hours during the January 2013 assault, prosecutor Christine O’Brien described the events the victim experienced inside 6423 Walton Avenue as a “nightmare.”

The victim, now 7, is also expected to to take the stand during the trial.

O’Brien alleges Regusters walked into Bryant Elementary School on Jan. 14, 2013 wearing Muslim garb, signed the child out and headed toward Walton Avenue. Before arriving at the home, Regusters allegedly put the child into a laundry bag and carried her up the steps.

During her captivity, the victim was kept under a bed, naked and blindfolded. She later told police she heard a large talking bird and was told, “If you scream, that bird will peck your eyes out.”

Outside the courtroom, Tom Klein, the attorney representing the victim and her mother in a civil case, said the victim has a lot to overcome.

"She is a precious, sweet, beautiful child that will have a lifetime of emotional and physical scars," Klein said.

Harrison reminded the jury that four people lived at 6243 Walton Avenue, and yet Christina remained the sole focus of the police investigation.

“Don’t make hasty judgments,” he said.

The state alleges Regusters anally and vaginally penetrated the kindergartner with an unknown object. The child described it as a toothpick because it felt sharp.

O’Brien told jurors that Regusters tried to confuse the "terrified" victim into believing that she'd been attacked by a man.

After repeated assaults, the child was dropped off before daybreak at an Upper Darby park and placed underneath a sliding board wearing only a t-shirt. O’Brien told jurors they will be shown surveillance video of Regusters lifting the child over a wall outside the home, after the attacks.

A passerby heard the child’s whimpers and screams at the park and called police.

“I’m scared,” O’Brien said the tiny voice could be heard saying on the 911 tapes.

Harrison instructed the jury to be fair and impartial.

“The victim in this case was brutalized, a little girl. It shouldn’t have happened to her. Shouldn’t happen to anybody. You can’t let sympathy come in and cloud your judgment,” said Harrison.

Speed Was a Factor in Deadly Crash That Split Car in 2

One young man is dead and a second injured in a crash so intense that the car they were in was split in two.

The deadly crash happened just before 1 a.m. Monday on the 1600 block of North Broad Street in Hatfield Township, Montgomery County.

Police tell NBC10 that two men in their early 20s were inside a vehicle, possibly an Acura Integra, when it crashed into a pole, killing one of the men on impact and badly injuring another.

The second victim was flown to Jefferson University Hospital in critical condition.

Speed was a factor in the crash, according to officials on the scene.

A man who works at a store nearby told NBC10's Katy Zachry that the sound of the impact stopped him dead in his tracks.

Firefighters were cleaning up fluid on the road and investigators remained on scene collecting evidence for more than five hours.

The road is expected to reopen around 7 a.m.
