Philly Memorial Service for Ebola Victims

A memorial service will be held Saturday in Philadelphia for a brother and sister who both died of Ebola in Africa.

On July 25, 40-year-old Patrick Sawyer became the first American to be killed by the virus. Sawyer became ill just a few weeks after rushing to the bedside of his sick sister, 27-year-old Princess Nyuennyue, who was hospitalized in early July in Liberia, where she lived with her fiancée and son. Sawyer and Nyuennyue's mother, Georgia Nah, lives in Southwest Philly.

"I can't stand it," Nah said. "I can't sleep. Every day I think about them."

Nyuennyue died July 7-- one day after her brother visited her.

“I didn’t even know she was sick,” said Nah, while holding back tears.

Hospital officials did not test the woman for Ebola until after her death – meaning her brother had no way of knowing he was exposed to the virus.

About two weeks after his sister’s death, Sawyer -- in Liberia since 2008 for his work with the foreign government’s Ministry of Finance -- was sent to Nigeria on assignment.

He collapsed as the plane touched down July 20 and was rushed to a hospital, where he was quarantined until his death five days later. He left behind a wife and three daughters, who he visited regularly at their home in Minnesota.

“My children were good children,” Nah said.

Nyuennyue was buried in Liberia. As for Sawyer, his family is still working to have his ashes returned to the states.

“At least send me something,” Nah said. “To know that here are the death certificates, the results of the Ebola. I don’t have anything.”

The memorial service for both of Nah's children will take place today from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Inez Too Banquet Hall on 624 South 62nd Street.

A man who was shot by his own mother now faces charges after investigators determined that he tried to shoot her before she opened fire.

On Friday shortly after 9 p.m., police were called to the 5700 block of McMahon Avenue in the Germantown section of the city for a report of gunshots. When they arrived they found a 45-year-old man inside the home suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach.

Police interviewed the man's 78-year-old mother who claimed she shot her son in self-defense. The woman told police she was inside her home when her son, who appeared drunk, threatened to strangle her.

The woman says she was frightened and barricaded herself in her second floor bedroom when she heard two loud bangs. That's when police say the son pushed his way into his mother's bedroom. The man then allegedly pointed a gun at his mother and said, "I'm gonna shoot you b****."

The woman says she then picked up her own handgun that was on her bed and fired multiple shots, striking her son once in the stomach. The woman says her son fired a shot while leaning against the wall. The bullet missed her and struck a wall. The woman says she then barricaded herself inside her room until police arrived.

The son was taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery. He is currently in stable condition. Police say he will be charged with aggravated assault and other related offenses.

A self-proclaimed Messiah is recovering after he attacked a driver while running nude in the Pennsport section of the city, according to investigators.

On Sunday around 4 a.m., police spotted a half-naked man who appeared to have been thrown from a black sedan on the 1500 block of South Christopher Columbus Boulevard. Investigators say the 57-year-old man was lying on the ground unconscious as the vehicle fled the scene eastbound on Reed Street.

The man was taken to Jefferson Hospital and treated for a cut lip. Investigators eventually tracked down five passengers inside the sedan and took them in for questioning.

After interviewing the passengers, police determined that the man, who they initially believed was the victim, was actually the aggressor. According to investigators, the unidentified man became delusional after taking his new medication while drinking alcohol. The man allegedly ran into the street while naked from the waist down. Police say the man was banging on vehicles passing by while claiming he was the Messiah.

The "Messiah" then struck a 24-year-old man who was inside the black sedan, according to investigators. Police say he then fell to the ground after the 24-year-old opened the car door. The "Messiah" allegedly tried to punch him again but the 24-year-old pushed him to the ground. The "Messiah" then chased after the other passengers inside the sedan as they returned to their vehicle and fled the scene.

Investigators say the 57-year-old man suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder as well as depression. No one has been charged in the incident.
