Worker Crushed to Death in Wall Collapse

A construction worker was trapped and killed when the last standing wall of a building under demolition collapsed on top of him.

The worker was taking down an old Blockbuster Video building in the Cherry Hill Shopping Center at 500 Route 38 in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. He was standing by the wall when it collapsed around 12:30 p.m. Friday.

The collapse knocked the worker into a trench, leaving him partially buried by debris. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A backhoe operator who was shook up and having chest pains, was hospitalized.

The site was being cleared to pave the way for a Super Wawa, according to Fire Director Patrick Kelly.

"I'd say 98.9 percent of it was down. This is the last piece that was there and unfortunately, something happened where the wall came down on a worker," Kelly said.

Kelly said the company in charge of the demolition had all the proper permits. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) identified that company as Mancuso Contractors, based in Maple Shade, New Jersey. Inspection reports show OSHA fined the company in 1999 and 2000 for worker safety violations related to excavations. Requests for comment from the company were not returned by the time of publication.

OSHA investigators were on the scene within hours of Friday's collapse, along with investigators from the Camden County Prosecutor's office.

The victim's identity is not being made public until his family has been notified.

The store is one of thousands across the country that closed after Blockbuster LLC filed for bankruptcy. This is an image of the building from 2008.

Boy, 4, in AC Expressway Crash Dies From Injuries

A 4-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man were killed and four others were hurt after they were thrown from a pickup truck as it overturned along the Atlantic City Expressway in South Jersey on Friday.

Police say 45-year-old Roselyn Kornegay was driving a white Ford truck in the westbound lanes of the highway near mile marker 22.7 around 7:10 a.m. in Hamilton Township, New Jersey.

According to investigators, 35-year-old James Dennis and a 4-year-old child were passengers in the cab. They also say 19-year-old Brian Gregory, 18-year-old Shaniqua Abrams and 9-year-old Dion Kornegay were sitting in the bed of the truck.

Kornegay somehow lost control of the vehicle while driving and struck a guardrail. The truck then flipped over, and all six people were thrown out onto the road.

PHOTO: Debris is strewn across the westbound lanes of the Atlantic City Expressway after this pickup truck overturned -- ejecting six people including two children.

"A child was lying on the right side of the road, being helped by a driver from the car in front of me," said one witness, who did not want to be identified. "There was a woman lying in the road on the left and other people lying in the middle of the highway. There were clothes and lots and lots of beer cans and it was a horrible mess."

Dennis was killed in the crash, police say. Kornegay and the 4-year-old child were flown by medical helicopter to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey. The 4-year-old boy, who has not yet been identified, died from his injuries shortly after 3:30 p.m. Kornegay remains in critical condition.

Gregory, Abrams and Dion Kornegay were taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center -- two by ambulance and another by helicopter. They all suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police also say all of the victims are from Philadelphia. They don't believe anyone in the truck was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

"Being that all six passengers were ejected from the vehicle, it's safe to say they were not wearing their safety belts," said New Jersey State Police Sergeant Monica Nuhfer. "The fact that the child wasn't even in a seat belt is absolutely violating the law and the safety of the child."

Officials shut down the westbound lanes of the highway for several hours -- diverting traffic east of the scene. The roadway was partially reopened around 11 a.m.

Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

An armed robber posed as a salesman and forced his way into a Main Line home, ransacking the place and stealing $500,000 worth of jewelry.

Helen Hofberg said she heard a knock at the front door of her Foxfields Road house in Bryn Mawr around 6:30 p.m. on June 12.

The suspect identified himself as an organic food salesman leading Hofberg to barely crack open the door.

"I opened it that much so he could put a piece of paer through," she said. "I didn't see him. I just saw the barrel of the gun."

"He said, this is a robbery. An armed robbery," she said.

The suspect demanded her husband's watches and pushed the woman into the kitchen, she explained.

"If I would've tried to push back, he might have shot me," she said. "Stand in the corner and he wanted me to give him my hands, so he could tie me up."

When she refused to cooperate, a scuffle ensued and Hofberg suffered bruises to her leg.

"Don't tell me what to do in my house," Hofberg said. "He totally backed off."

The robber had her follow him upstairs, where he made a call on his cell phone, according to police. A few moments later, an accomplice appeared on the second-floor of the home.

Both suspects then spent an hour tearing apart the bedrooms, collecting approximately $500,000 worth of jewelry and watches before fleeing the scene, according to officials.

"They went through everything," she said. "Everything."

Haverford Township Police have released a sketch of the gunman and descriptions of both suspects.

The robber who first entered the home is descibed as a white male in his thirties, approximately 6-feet tall with a medium build and dark curly hair, and was wearing aviator type sunglasses, gloves and jeans, according to investigators. Officials say the second suspect was a white male with a stocky build and was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt.

Anyone with information on their identities should contact the Haverford Township Police at 610-853-1298.

Tasers with Cameras Help Camden County Police

Camden County Police received new equipment -- tasers with attached cameras -- six weeks ago. An officer used the weapon for the first time on a knife-wielding woman who nearly slashed him and his fellow cops with a 12-inch blade.

"I can tell you whole-heartedly, had it been six, eight weeks ago before the tasers would have been in effect, she would be dead," said Sgt. John Martinez.

The 56-year-old woman was outside a home on the 1300 block of Jackson Street in Camden, threatening people with a large knife, according to officials.

A neighbor called 911 and when police arrived on the scene the suspect dashed inside a nearby house, according to reports.

Police began searching the home, working their way to the second floor, where the woman was hiding behind a shower curtain.

She jumped out and lunged at the officers with the knife.

The dangerous situation forced Martinez to make a split-second decision: should he use deadly force or reach for his newly issued taser?

"Just because we can take somebody's life," he said, "doesn't mean we have to."

Charges have not been filed against the woman, who had a history of behavioral issues. She is undergoing a health evaluation.

"It makes me feel better knowing I don't have to go from zero to 60 and take sombeody's life if I have alternative means," Martinez said.

Local Bridge Closed Indefinitely Over Safety Concerns

A heavily-used bridge spanning the Perkiomen Creek in Montgomery County has been shut down indefinitely because transit officials say it's structurally unsafe.

The Graterford Road Bridge, just off of Route 29, crosses the waterway in Perkiomen Township, Pa. It links the town to nearby Skippack and served as a main thoroughfare to the state's SCI Graterford Prison.

But an inspection earlier this week discovered the bridge had serious cracks in its steel support beams and water deck, according to a PennDOT spokesman. The agency chose to shut down the bridge, which was rated to handle up to 14 tons, as a precaution.

Pennsylvania has the highest number of structurally deficient bridges in the country, according to state data. Officials say they've cut the number of problem bridges in the Philadelphia region from 600 to 463 in recent years, but that many remain.

A PennDOT spokesman said the small bridge will not be high on the priority list and doesn't expect it to be repaired for several years.

A young doctor was raped after a man forced his way into her Rittenhouse Square apartment early Saturday morning, according to Philadelphia Police.

The 26-year-old woman, who is a doctor at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, was walking home from Ladder 15, a bar at 1528 Sansom St., around 1:30 a.m. when the alleged doer began to follow her along Spruce Street, officials say.

Police are currently reviewing surveillance video that shows the suspect biking past the woman and then locking the bike to a pole as she continued to walk down the street.

As she passed him, the man approached her from behind, grabbed her by the neck and forced her to open the door of her apartment building along the 1900 block of Spruce Street, about six blocks south of the bar, according to authorities.

Once inside her apartment, the woman was raped, according to officials. Police say the video showed the man leaving her home, but, moments later, he returned and raped her again.

Once the man left. the woman called police for help, investigators said.

The suspect is described as a man, between 25 and 30-years-old, standing 5-foot-7-inches tall and wearing a black shirt and blue jeans, according to police.

Officials are investigating the incident as both a sexual assault and home invasion.

Family Devastated by Father's Wall Collapse Death

$

Odily Castro didn't believe the two men who came to her door on Friday. They couldn't be right. Jose David, her son, couldn't have been killed at his construction job along Route 38 in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

"I didn't believe them because I knew it was not true," she said. The mother had just spoken with him on the phone a few hours before.

But to her dismay, it was. The 40-year-old day laborer was one of three people demolishing a long-defunct Blockbuster Video store at the Cherry Hill Shopping Center when a portion of a nearby wall crashed down on him. It was the last wall to be demolished.

"This has had a major impact on us because he was a good man. A well-educated, hard worker who has left his mother with a lot of pain," said friend Maria Felix Moran.

Jose David immigrated to the United States years ago and started a family. He was a father of two young children.

"My oldest grandson will be graduating from middle school this Wednesday. He keeps talking about how he wished his Daddy would be alive to see it," Castro said.

The Camden County Prosecutor's Office and OSHA are investigating the demolition practices of Jose David's employer, Mancuso Contractors, and the general contractor Carl R. Pursell, Inc. The companies are building a Super Wawa on the site.

In a statement, Wawa said Pursell has been a long-time general contractor for the convenience store chain and that Friday's collapse is first such incident in 50 years building more than 1,000 stores.

"We are doing everything we can to support those involved and the authorities in their investigation," the statement read in part.

Both contractors did not respond to multiple requests for comment over the past two days.

A spokesperson for the prosecutor's office said an autopsy was scheduled to be performed Saturday on Jose David to determine the official cause of death. Officials are still working to learn what caused the wall to collapse and whether anyone is to blame.

No matter the findings, though, they will not dull the pain Castro feels. Now, she replays the last time she saw her son alive.

"He told me 'You are my number one' and then he kissed me," she said before crying.

Telemundo 62 reporter Christian Cazares contributed to this report.

Police are asking for the public's help tracking down the second suspect responsible for robbing gun range customers of at least nine weapons and shooting a 67-year-old man.

Authorities identified the missing robber as 27-year-old Jeffrey Chandler.

Officials say Chandler, who stands 5-feet 10-inches tall and weighs about 200 pounds, has numerous tattoos on both arms. The most distinctive tattoo is the word - "Stretch" - located on his right hand, they say.

Investigators say Chandler fired the shot that wounded one of the victims.

If anyone sees this man, they should not approache the suspect, who is considered armed and dangerous, police said. Dial 911 immediately.

Chandler's alleged accompolice, 21-year-old Samiyyah Poteat turned herself in to authorities on June 13 after seeing herself in surveillance video of the crimes.

She faces multiple charges including attempted homicide, robbery and aggravated assault.

Officials say Poteat and Chandler were involved in two holdups at two different gun ranges -- the first at Yury's Gun Range in Philly's West Poplar neighborhood and the second at the Delaware Valley Sports Center in the city's Bustleton neighborhood.

The suspects waited in a parked car, a late model dark colored 2-door coupe, outside of the ranges until potential victims exited.

They robbed a 68-year-old man at gunpoint outside Yury's at 544 N. Percy St. around 6:40 p.m. June 11, emptying the victim's pockets and taking off with his backpack, which contained two .22 caliber handguns, according to authorities.

The following day, the pair went to Delaware Valley Sports Center at 101 Geiger Road and pulled off the same heist on an unsuspecting 67-year-old man, who was leaving the range with a friend around 8:40 p.m., according to police.

Officials say they demanded the two men hand over their cash and guns. Even though the victims were cooperating, Chandler fired a shot, striking the 67-year-old and critically wounding him, according to authorities.

Investigators also recovered the getaway car used in the crimes June 14. It was located on the 200 block of South Hanson Street in West Philly.

Detectives say Chandler is known to frequent the 4900 block of Walnut Street, as well as Willingboro, N.J. Anyone with information on his whereabouts should contact the Philadelphia Police Department's the Special Investigations Unit at the Central Detective Division at 215-686-3047 or 215-686-3048.
