"Swiss Cheese Pervert" Sentenced

An infamous flasher, dubbed the "Swiss Cheese Pervert" by a community group, pleaded guilty to indecent exposure and harassment charges for flashing several women while holding slices of cheese.

Christopher Pagano, 42, entered his guilty plea before a Philadelphia municipal court judge on Thursday. He was sentenced to eight years probation.

Pagano must also undergo sex offender counseling for the January incidents.

He would drive up to the victims and ask if they'd like to be paid to watch him rub the cheese on his genitals, according to authorities. He would then place the cheese on his exposed crotch. One of his victims recorded video of an incident along Henry Avenue in the East Falls section of the city. Another victim, in Mayfair, snapped a photo of her interaction.

The Norristown, Pa. man was arrested in January for the Philadelphia flashings. He was also charged for a separate incident in Montgomery County.

Pagano had faced charges of Stalking, Indecent Exposure, Harassment and Open Lewdness, but pled to only two of the charges as part of a deal with the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office.

"We are happy with the outcome of the case," said Mark Hauser, Pagano's attorney.

Pagano won't be registered with the Megan's Law sex offenders database because the charges don't rise to the level mandated, Hauser said.

Asked why Pagano flashed the women, the attorney wouldn't comment, but said his client is sorry. "He’s been remorseful since the minute that I met him and he wants to get help," Hauser said.

Local Man Helps Abducted Teen

Fairmount resident Steve Reiff, 64, was getting into his car about to go to a routine doctor's appointment on Wednesday afternoon when he was approached by a frantic 15-year-old who said he'd been abducted and held hostage by gunmen.

"He had no shoes on, and he looked frantic, and he was crying," Reiff said. "He said, 'I was just kidnapped and I had duct tape on face and hands. The guys had guns, they went into my parent's house and robbed them.'"

Reiff didn't know whether the story was true, but he knew he had to do something to help.

"I told him, 'Get in my car,' and I took him to 23rd and Fairmount to a Sunoco gas station mini-market there so he could call the police. And he went in there and they called them for him."

Reiff says he then rode off to his appointment, uncertain about the outcome of the young man's story but relieved that he'd at least done something to try to help.

It wasn't until Reiff returned home later that evening that he learned the truth behind the teen's ordeal.

According to police, two gunmen wearing purple latex gloves and masks kidnapped the teen while he was walking home from school on Ferndale Street in Northeast Philadelphia on Wednesday. Police say the kidnappers later drove to the teen's home in Bustleton, tied up his parents with shoestrings, and collected $30,000 in cash, jewelry, and the home's surveillance video system before taking off with the teen in the car.

The high schooler somehow managed to free himself from the kidnappers, at which point he encountered Reiff and asked him for help.

"When I came back from the appointment, I turned on the TV and I see it on the news, and I thought, 'Holy cow!' Who would’ve even known if it was true," he said.

"It was all very surprising, but I knew something was up. I knew he needed some help and I couldn’t just leave him there. I have children of my own so I had to get him to some place safe. Luckily I was there at the right time."

The teen was not hurt and has since been reunited with his family.

No arrests have been made.

Funding Breakthrough for Philly Public Schools

Philadelphia School District received some good news at Thursday night's School Reform Commission meeting.

It seems that city leaders are ready to borrow an additional $30 million for the struggling school system, and that's enough to make a major dent in the district's overwhelming deficit.

"The city has now given us everything that we asked for in out initial request," said School Reform Commission Chairman William Green.

Which means, in total, the city's contribution to Philly's public schools will likely be $120 million from sales taxes, $27 million in previously planned borrowing and now, $30 million more.

And although the funds should be enough to prevent the elimination of school programs and teacher layoffs in the already struggling school system, district and city officials say they still have a long road ahead in closing the nearly $320 million dollar deficit.

Next, the school district says it will push state leaders to allow a $2 a pack cigarette tax, which could raise as much as $45 million next year for city schools.

"There is still much more work to be done," Mayor Michael Nutter said at Thursday's meeting.

Work that includes extracting tens of millions of dollars in concessions from the teacher's union.

Two men are in custody following a shooting and high-speed chase through two South Jersey counties Thursday night.

Westville Police tell NBC10.com the incident began with a shooting inside a unit at the Westwood Manor Apartments along the 700 block of Broadway Street in the small Gloucester County town. One man was hit in the stomach and later rushed to Copper University Hospital. He's in critical condition, officials say.

When police arrived to the apartment complex, they spotted the two men getting into an SUV and speeding off. The men drove out of Westville and into neighboring Camden -- zig-zagging through the city streets.

SkyForce10 was overhead as the pursuit headed towards the busy Admiral Wilson Boulevard. There, near 10th Street, the men stopped the SUV and surrendered to officers. Both men were taken into custody without issue.

The Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office is handling the investigation. A motive for the shooting is unknown.

Firefighters spent over three hours Friday morning battling a fire at a warehouse in Camden.

The fire began inside the Plastic Consulting and Manufacturing Company at 1431 Ferry Avenue in the city shortly after 3:30 a.m. Investigators say two PCM employees were working in the building when they noticed high temperatures on an oven and flames inside the building.

Firefighters from both Camden and Collingswood arrived to battle the blaze. Investigators say a few propane tanks inside the building may have exploded, fueling the fire. A ceiling also partially collapsed.

Firefighters were eventually able to bring the flames under control around 7 a.m. By then, however, officials say the building was destroyed.

No one was hurt during the fire and no homes are located near the area.

Plastic Consulting and Manufacturing was a 50-year-old business that specialized in applying DuPont products, including Teflon.

Officials continue to investigate the cause of the fire.

Barron Alexander, son of the infamous Philadelphia abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell, is due in court for a robbery he allegedly committed before being shot by his victims.

Alexander, 22, whose former name was Barron Alexander Gosnell, was shot several times outside a home rented by college students along the 3700 block of Brandywine Avenue in the Mantua section of the city on June 4.

Philadelphia Police say Alexander broke into the home three times over a short period that Wednesday morning -- stealing cash and electronics. The last time he entered the home, police say, one of the residents woke up and got into a struggle with Alexander.

A second roommate then woke up, grabbed his gun and shot Alexander multiple times.

Alexander was hospitalized and later charged with burglary, theft, receiving stolen property, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.

He is due in court for a preliminary hearing on Friday morning.

Attempts to speak with Alexander about the ordeal were not successful.

Alexander's father, Kermit Gosnell, is serving consecutive life sentences in prison for murdering three babies and a patient inside his Mantua health clinic. The office was dubbed a "House of Horrors" by investigators for its filthy conditions and improperly disposed aborted fetuses.

A large water main has broken in South Philadelphia, flooding several streets and prompting their closure.

The 12-inch main burst under Oregon Avenue at St. Christopher Drive, near 3rd Street, around 5:30 a.m. on Friday.

Water spilled on to the streets above the pipe, rising up to the front of a Philly Soft Pretzel Factory and spreading north on 3rd Street towards Shunk. That's a block away. Residents moved their cars to keep them from being flooded.

Philadelphia Police have shut down the westbound lanes of Oregon Avenue and 3rd Street between Shunk and Oregon. Water has flooded the basement of at least one home along St. Christopher Drive, officials tell NBC10.com.

Water pressure has dropped significantly in the surrounding neighborhood.

Philadelphia Water Department crews were able to shut off the water flow around 7 a.m. and continue to work at the scene.

Tracy Morgan Moved to Rehab Center

Nearly two weeks after he was involved in a crash that left him critically injured, actor-comedian Tracy Morgan was transferred to a rehab center.

"Tracy has been transferred to an undisclosed rehab center, where he is expected to remain for the next few weeks," Morgan's publicist Lewis Kay wrote in a released statement. "While he is continuing to show signs of improvement, he still has a long way to go.  He and Megan wanted to publicly express their deepest gratitude to everyone at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for the unbelievable care and attention they provided him."

Morgan and six others were inside a Mercedes Sprinter limo traveling in the northbound lanes of the New Jersey Turnpike in Cranbury, New Jersey on the morning of Saturday, June 7 when a Walmart truck crashed into it, causing it to flip and hit four other vehicles.

Morgan was critically hurt in the accident, suffering a broken leg, femur, nose and ribs. He was flown to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J.  Morgan’s mentor and fellow comedian James “Jimmy Mack” McNair, 69, was killed in the crash.

Fellow passengers Jeffrey Millea and Ardie Fuqua, Jr. were also critically injured in the crash and remain hospitalized. Harris Stanton, another passenger, was treated and released on Sunday.

On Monday, Kay revealed that both Morgan and Millea were upgraded to "fair condition."

Kevin Roper, the 35-year-old driver of the Walmart truck, was arrested and charged with Death by Auto and Assault by Driving. According to a criminal complaint, Roper hadn’t slept for at least 24 hours when the crash occurred. Investigators have not yet revealed however whether he fell asleep at the wheel. The NTSB also determined that he was driving 65 mph in a 45 mph zone.

Attorney Defends Trucker in Tracy Morgan Crash

The attorney for the truck driver charged in the fatal crash that injured comedian Tracy Morgan and several others released a statement on Friday in response to allegations that his client was speeding at the time of the accident.

"Mr. Roper will have his day in court, and we remain confident that once all of the facts become known he will be acquitted of the charges," attorney Jay Glassman wrote in a released statement.

On Thursday, the National Transportation Safety Board claimed 35-year-old Kevin Roper of Jonesboro, Georgia had logged over 13 hours behind the wheel and was driving 65 mph in a 45 mph zone.

Kevin Roper pleaded not guilty last week to charges of vehicular homicide and assault by auto. Roper was driving a Wal-Mart truck on June 7 when he allegedly swerved to avoid slowed traffic on the turnpike and plowed into Morgan's limo.

"Mr. Roper has entered a plea of not guilty," wrote Glassman. "It was not an artificial exercise, but rather the first step in defending the charges that have been filed against him."

The NTSB report stated that Roper had a logged a total of 13 hours and 32 minutes on the job that day. The maximum consecutive duty period allowed for commercial drivers is 14 hours. The report also states that Roper was traveling at 65 mph for 60 seconds preceding the crash in a construction zone where the speed limit had been reduced from 55 mph to 45 mph.

"The initial investigation results released yesterday by the NTSB have only served to bolster our intention to aggressively defend the matter to the fullest," Glassman wrote.

A criminal complaint alleges that Roper hadn't slept for more than 24 hours before the accident. Wal-Mart has said it believes he was in compliance with federal safety regulations.

The 45-year-old Morgan suffered a broken femur, a broken nose and several broken ribs. His friend and fellow comedian James McNair was killed, and two other passengers were seriously injured.

Morgan underwent surgery for his broken leg and his condition was upgraded earlier this week from critical to fair. He was also recently moved from the hospital to a rehab center, according to his publicist.

"We remain mindful of the victims sand continue to express our deepest sympathies to the family of James McNair, and our heartfelt wishes for a full recovery of those who suffered injuries in the accident," Glassman wrote. "While this case continues to remain in the spotlight, we have no interest in commenting on rumor or speculation, exchanging a news conference for a jury, or sacrificing Mr. Roper's presumption of innocence for a sound bite. The lives of all of those affected deserve more than that."

Methacton Community Theater to Host Open Auditions

As they prepare for the production of “Oliver” on July 18, 19, 25, and 26, The Methacton Community Theater is already starting to look to the future. It’s next production of “The Producers” will be hosting auditions in early August.

Since 1977, the organization has produced over 100 musicals, dramas and comedies which they aim to entertain for all ages, “from the very young to the young at heart,” according to the MCT website.

The current president of MCT, Jude Adams, said that the organization is always looking for new faces. Currently, the community theater is in search of:

  • New actors
  • Stage veterans
  • Directors
  • Lighting and sound specialists
  • Costume design and management
  • Make-up and effects
  • Stage craftsman
  • Back-stage support (stage manage, concessions, box office, greeters)
  • Audience members

“Whether you simply enjoy sitting back and watching a great production, are a new talent and want to unleash your potential on the world, are returning to the stage, or want to try your hand for the first time in this thing called ‘community theater,’ MCT welcomes you,” said Adams on the site.

Auditions for “The Producers” will be held on Aug. 3, 5 and 7. The Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan production also includes music and lyrics by Brooks. It is aimed to be directed by Deb Schrager. It is produced by Michelle Miller, Lauren Franz, and Loretta Rurode, while musical direction will be supervised by Tom Wexler. Choreography is by Sally Rothschild.

The musical, described as a story on “a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant.”

“[The two] come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history by bilking their backers out of millions of dollars,” said the MCT site. “Only one thing goes wrong: the show is a smash hit. ‘The Producers’ sets the standard for modern, outrageous, in-your-face humor.”

The show will take the MCT stage on Nov. 7, 8, 14 and 15. Each performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. Matinees will begin at 2 p.m. on Nov. 9 and 16.

Performances take place at the Shannondell Performing Arts Theater, 10000 Shannondell Blvd., in Audubon.

Auditions will be held at the following times:

  • Sunday, Aug. 3 from 1 to 5 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Aug. 5 from 7 to 9:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, Aug. 7 from 7 to 9:30 p.m.
  • Callbacks on Aug. 10 at 1 p.m.

For a full description of the needed roles to be filled, including leads Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom, visit the MCT website here. Many roles include males between ages 25 and 60, while females are needed from 20 to 35, as well as a “Hold-Me-Touch-Me” role for a “feisty little old lady who has the hots for Max.” Several “ensemble” roles, especially for those of tap dancers, are needed.

Actors should be age 16 and over, due to the “adult humor” involved in the production.

ParenteBeard May Merge With Chicago Firm

ParenteBeard, the largest accounting firm based in Philadelphia, is in merger talks with Chicago-based Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, a Baker Tilly spokesman confirmed Thursday morning.

“We are in ongoing discussions with ParenteBeard,” Baker Tilly’s David Pendery said. He declined to comment further on the talks.

The Philadelphia Business Journal contacted ParenteBeard Chairman and CEO Robert J. Ciaruffoli on June 10 about the talks but he said the firm would not “comment on the status of any such discussions, or respond to marketplace rumors.” He could not be immediately reached for comment Thursday morning.

Both firms are part of Baker Tilly International, an independent network of 161 accounting and consulting firms spread across 137 countries.

The Chicago firm was traditionally called Virchow Krause and chose to take on the Baker Tilly name in 2009. It has 11 offices in five states (Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, New York) and Washington, D.C. There is minimal geographic overlap, as the firms only have one office in the same city — New York. ParenteBeard has 20 offices in seven states: Pennsylvania (where it has 12 sites), New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Delaware and Texas.
