Man Releases Giant Rat in NJ McDonald’s; Total Chaos Ensues

A man released a large, white rat into a McDonald’s in New Jersey last week, sending patrons scrambling for the exit in an incident that was caught on video.

Cellphone video that appears to have been shot by an accomplice shows a man walk into the McDonald’s holding a plastic pet carrier with the rodent inside.

The man opens the carrier, tips the rat onto the floor and runs away as havoc ensues, the video shows.

Screams can be heard as patrons run toward the exit and out the door. The rodent in question appears to scurry under a table.

In a statement, the eatery’s owner and operator Celest Quintana confirmed that the rat was released in the restaurant at 772 Broad Street in Newark on Feb. 5, adding that “the safety of our customers and the cleanliness of our restaurants are our top priority.

“Following this incident, our restaurant staff thoroughly cleaned and sanitized the dining area and contacted the police,” Quintana said. “We are currently working with local law enforcement to identify the person responsible for this deliberate act."

Newark police didn’t immediately respond to request for comment on the incident.

Booby-Trapped Stairway Shocks Philly Real Estate Investors

A team of Philadelphia real estate investors was lucky to avoid what could have been a tragedy after coming across a stairway booby-trapped with a swinging knife.

Ekrem Uysaler said he and his team were scoping out a home in Southwest Philly on Jan. 2 when one of his coworkers saw a small line coming across a stairway that was covered in glass shards. As their head construction manager was about to walk up, the men stopped him in his tracks.

Once they stopped their construction manager, Uysaler said, the men saw a piece of string on the ground and knew something was amiss. They found a pole in the building and began filming.

"Holy crap," Uysaler recalled thinking as they used the pole to pull the string only to be met with a fast-moving, downward-swinging crutch. Duct taped to the end of the crutch was a large knife pointing right to where a person's head would have been.

In the video, the men can be heard expressing their shock through a string of expletives. "It could've done a lot of damage, but luckily we saw it before anybody got hurt," Usayler said.

Though Usayler said it's somewhat commonplace to find surprising and even dangerous things in his line of work - like drug stashes or abandoned dogs - this booby-trapped staircase took it to another level.

"We just stopped right there and people kind of were in shock. We're gonna finish out the project, but we just stopped right there," he said.

Though he walked away with quite the scare, Usayler is now able to see the funny side of it all.

"It's like 'Home Alone,' Delco style, Philly style," he said with a laugh.

PATCO is celebrating 50 years of transporting passengers between Center City Philadelphia and South Jersey by offering nostalgic fares.

Friday marks 50 years since PATCO made the inaugural journey from Lindenwold, New Jersey, to Center City on Feb. 15, 1969, the agency says.

To mark the occasion, PATCO is showing its appreciation by offering “Flashback Fares” at all stations from 6 to 11 a.m. Rides will cost as little as 30 cents as the transit agency celebrates 1969.

Here are the Flashback Fares for trips to and from Center City:

  • For Lindenwold, Ashland and Woodcrest stations - 60 cents (presently $3)
  • For Haddonfield, Westmont and Collingswood stations - 50 cents (normally $2.60)
  • For Ferry Avenue Station - 40 cents (presently $2.25)
  • For Broadway and City Hall stations - 30 cents (normally $1.40)

It will also be cheap to not cross the Ben Franklin Bridge Friday morning:

  • Trips between Philly’s four stations - 30 cents (presently $1.40)
  • Trips between New Jersey’s nine stations - 40 cents (normally $1.60)

Besides the cheap rides there will be some retro swag. PATCO staff will be handing out commemorative reproductions of the original 1969 timetable at stations between Lindenwold and Broadway from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Friday.

PATCO, state and local officials will also hold a news conference at 9 a.m. at the Woodcrest Station.

Chesco Drug Bust Turns Up Gator Living in the Kitchen

Detectives executing a search warrant for drugs found an alligator in the kitchen of a Chester County home last week.

Detectives found heroin, suspected fentanyl, crack cocaine, marijuana, cash and drug packaging in the South Coatesville home on Feb. 8, Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan said. Investigators also found the 2-foot-long American gator living in the kitchen.

“Drug dealers will do just about anything to project an image of danger in order to protect their drugs and cash,” Hogan said in a news release Thursday. “Some drug dealers use pit bulls or snakes. These drug traffickers kept an alligator in the house.”

Irvin “Gotti” Hawkins, 31, who rents the Gibbons Avenue home; Aki Gathright, 35, of Philadelphia; and Tyrone Jackson, 40, of Columbia, Pennsylvania, were charged with drug dealing counts.

Investigators zeroed in on the men after a series of undercover drug buys before the bust, according to criminal complaints filled out by county detectives.

Once inside the home, besides the gator, detectives found marijuana on a table and in two bedrooms, suspected crack cocaine in a bathroom tub, bulk and black tar heroin in a bedroom, more than $5,000 in cash and drug packaging materials.

During the drug bust, Jackson tried to throw marijuana out the window, according to criminal complaints. Gathright had marijuana and unknown white pills on him at the time of the bust, detectives said. Hawkins had controlled substances with him.

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s Brandywine Zoo took in the gator. The Wilmington zoo plans to use the gator as an educational tool for visitors over the summer. After that, the gator will be moved to the St. Augustine Alligator Farm and Zoological Park in Florida.

“We will provide care for the alligator and ensure it is healthy during its stay with the zoo,” Brandywine Zoo director Brint Spencer said.

All three suspects were being held in county jail Thursday, unable to post bail, according to court records. NBC10 left messages for Gathright’s and Jackson’s attorneys. Online court record don’t list an attorney who could comment on Hawkins’ behalf.

Woman Accused of Stealing Fur Coats to Support Heroin Habit

Police say they busted a woman with thousands of dollars' worth of stolen clothing after she made off with a $3,500 mink coat from a Delaware County store.

Police arrested Tamala Lee Tucker after they found six trash bags full of clothing and she admitted to them that she planned on selling the garments to support her heroin addiction, according to an affidavit.

Officers were led to Tucker after she went to a Jacques Ferber Furs store in Wayne and walked out with a mink coat stuffed underneath her dress, Radnor Township Police Department Sgt. Dan Lunger said.

According to store owner Pamela Ferber, the shop was in the middle of an end-of-the-season sale when Tucker and two other women walked in.

"I know my inventory really well and I looked over and I could see a piece was not there," Ferber said.

Growing suspicious, she walked over to the women and told them she knew they'd taken something, which is when they scurried out the door, Ferber said. Ferber went outside and managed to get a vehicle description and partial license plate.

A few minutes later, police spotted the SUV and brought Ferber over, the affidavit said. Ferber positively identified the women, which is when Tucker supposedly admitted that the coat was in the back seat.

At that point, officers spotted the trash bags full of clothes with tinfoil wrapped around the security tags, according to the document. Other fur jackets worth thousands of dollars were found among the 37 pieces of recovered clothing, Lunger said.

"I saw [police] lift the hatch of their vehicle and there were other plastic bags full of things, just like my coat was in a plastic bag, and realized wow, they've had a busy day," Ferber said.

Tucker told police she had received at least some of the clothes from an acquaintance in Baltimore, Maryland and planned to "get rid" of them to get cash for her heroin habit, the affidavit said.

Her alleged shoplifting spree may span at least three states, including Maryland, Delaware and the Delaware County area of Pennsylvania, Lunger said. "Spanning several states, stealing items, possibly taking possession of stolen items to support a heroin habit, it's something that draws your attention for sure," he said.

Police hope others come forward to see if any of their items were stolen. The two other women who were with Tucker at the time of the arrest have not been charged with any crime.

Eleven people were arrested and nearly six kilograms of heroin and crack cocaine were seized in a raid of 13 homes Thursday by state and city authorities in Philadelphia.

The drugs found as part of the operation, dubbed "the Kensington Initiative" because it centered around a location in the northern Philadelphia neighborhood, add up to 170,000 doses, authorities said. It has a street value of $1.8 million, the Pennsylvania Attorney General said in a statement.

The heroin and crack confiscated were primarily sold out of a house in the 3300 block of Argyle Street, two blocks from Kensington Avenue, the attorney general's office said.

Drug-packaging material was seized at a house in the 6200 block of Cardiff Street in Northeast Philadelphia, officials said.

The 11 people arrested are charged with running a drug trafficking ring that operated with about $7.7 million in street-value drugs annually, the attorney general's office said.

Each person arrested will be charged with corruption organizations, conspiracy and possession with intent to deliver narcotics.
