Smell It Out: Name the Mütter Museum's New Corpse Flower

$

0

The Mütter Museum’s most popular exhibits – brain slides, preserved livers, and the occasional skeleton – are mostly dead.

But its most recent acquisition is very much alive.

The Mütter recently announced that it’s adding a new "baby" plant to its medicinal garden, thanks to donations from museum store visitors. And in a crowd-sourcing move popularized by multiple other Philly locales, it’s asking museumgoers to vote on the plant’s name.

The formal name of the plant is Amorphophallus titanium, which translates directly as "giant misshapen phallus." But it’s more often called by its colloquial name: the corpse flower. Named for its stench, which has been said to resemble that of rotting meat, the plant in bloom attracts pollinating dung beetles in the wild — and curious observers in the city.

A corpse flower at the Toronto Zoo is blooming right now, attracting worldwide attention. Just this past August, the LA Times reported three consecutive blooms at the Huntington Library in California, calling them the “Titan Triplets”. And other ambitious scientists across the country, from New Hampshire to Nebraska, have fallen under its smell — er, spell — and are cultivating their own plants.

But don’t hold your breath (or your nose) just yet. Corpse flower blooms are rare and unpredictable; they can take almost a decade to bloom for the first time, and the bloom itself lasts less than two days.

In the meantime, visitors and fans of the museum are invited to weigh in on a new name. Options range from elegant (Hyperion) to silly (Sir Stinkerton, Esquire); you can vote for your favorite online now.

A 31-year-old man was found dead on the side of a Chester County road Thursday night and police are investigating his death as a homicide.

Samuel Algarin, of Quarryville, was found along Limestone Road in West Fallowfield, but investigators are not yet saying how he was killed.

Police are also looking for help finding the killer, according to West Fallowfield police Chief Charles "Smoke" Wilmont.

"This is a very active investigation," Wilmont said. "We would appreciate the public’s help in tracking down this killer."

Police did say Algarin was in the West Fallowfield area with his children earlier Thursday evening and detectives are searching for a dark-colored GMC Terrain SUV with a Pennsylvania license plate.

Anybody with information is encouraged to contact the Chester County Detectives at 610-344-6866.

Casey Releases 1st TV Ad of Pa. Senate Race to Air in Philly

The first TV ad of this year's low-key U.S. Senate campaign in Pennsylvania is now on screens in the state's biggest media market of Philadelphia.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Bob Casey on Wednesday began airing a TV ad (see the ad in its entirety below) touting the "Campus Save Act" that he authored and became law in 2013 to help prevent sexual assaults on college campuses and protect victims.

Republican U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta, a former mayor in northeastern Pennsylvania, is trying to unseat Casey in the Nov. 6 election. But Casey has a big fundraising advantage and Barletta isn't getting any help from outside super PACs. Barletta's campaign says it expects to be on the air in Philadelphia soon.

On Sept. 21, former President Barack Obama is headlining a fundraiser for Casey and Senate Democrats in Philadelphia. Donald Trump Jr. is headlining a state Republican Party dinner that evening.
