Mosquito-Carried Disease Seen Again in Camden County

West Nile Virus is back east of the Delaware River.

For the second time this year, another case of West Nile Virus has been confirmed in Camden County. Local authorities are investigating the case, while working to increase spraying zones and mosquito testing in the area.

The main source of West Nile Virus in humans is from the bite of an infected mosquito. The insects pick up the disease when they feed on infected birds.

The most recent victim of West Nile Virus was born in 1980.

However, if over the age of 50, more serious symptoms of the disease are likely to develop.

"The Camden County Health Department encourages you to use insect repellents and take extra precautions if you are outside during peak biting hours. You may also want to wear long sleeves and long pants if you are in your yard between dusk and dawn," a county official said in a release Friday.

Swimming pools and screen doors are common hideouts and entry ways for mosquitoes to get around and into your home. Stagnant water is particularly attractive to mosquito populations. Wearing heavy duty bug spray also serves as a defense against these insects.

The Camden County Mosquito Commission encourages residents to look for mosquito breeding elements around your home, in order to prevent the spread of the disease.

$3,000 Reward in Unexplained Murder of Young Chester Co. Dad

Two days after a young man was found dead on the side of a road in a rural Chester County town, apparently murdered, the auto dealer where he worked his entire adult life offered a $3,000 reward Saturday.

Samuel Algarin, of Quarryville, was found Thursday night along Limestone Road in West Fallowfield, but his sports utility vehicle remains missing, authorities said.

The 31-year-old worked at Jeff D'Ambrosio Chevrolet in Oxford Township since he was 18 years old, according to Matt Combs, a friend and service director at the dealership.

He was a great young man and well-liked by his co-workers, Combs said Saturday.

"It's a complete and utter shock," Combs said. "There has been no reason given behind it what so ever."

Detectives with the Chester County District Attorney's office are aiding the small town police chief in tracking down clues as to what exactly happened.

Investigators have yet to release details, but one source said it appeared that Algarin suffered "two entry wounds to his chest."

"This is a very active investigation," Chief Charles "Smoke" Wilmont said in a release Friday. "We would appreciate the public’s help in tracking down this killer."

Combs reiterated what police had confirmed: Algarin was found a very short time after his mother and two children dropped him off at his car at a nearby Starbucks.

Leading up to his murder, Algarin and his mother had taken his children to a jiu jitsu class Thursday night. After the class ended, his mother dropped him off at the Starbucks parking lot where he had left his car, according to Combs.

That was the last time anyone saw Algarin alive.

Combs described the location where he was found as "the complete opposite direction" of how Algarin should have been headed home.

Anybody with information is encouraged to contact the Chester County Detectives at 610-344-6866.

300 Baby Chicks Found Abandoned in Lot in North Philadelphia

Residents of the 5500 block of Whitaker Avenue woke up to a large, yellow, fuzzy surprise.

Three hundred baby chicks were abandoned in a vacant lot in North Philadelphia. It wasn’t until the Pennsylvania SPCA arrived that the chicks were brought to safety on Saturday morning.

The Humane Law Enforcement department of the SPCA responded to calls from several worried citizens, who noticed the crowd of hundreds of baby chicks. Officials immediately rescued them and brought them to their nearby headquarters. There, they received proper housing, along with food and watering stations.

“After receiving calls from concerned citizens, our Humane Law Enforcement team responded quickly to the scene,” Nicole Wilson, the PSPCA’s Director of Humane Law Enforcement, said.

The owner of the chicks came forward to explain why the young birds were abandoned. He told officials he had hoped to take over the empty lot to raise the chicks for food resale, but failed to contact the property owner. The chicks were left in the lot for days, where the owner admitted he had lost about a thousand of the baby birds in the time prior to their discovery, the SPCA said.

Anyone with information about the case or any others involving animal cruelty is urged to call the Pennsylvania SPCA's cruelty hotline at 866-601-SPCA. Tips can be left anonymously.

Eagle Scout's 9/11 Project Includes Brick for Every Victim

This Boy Scout of America really put the “America” into his latest service project.

Eight years in the making, Edward Caleo is completing his Eagle Scout Project, a 9/11 Memorial he and his troop built in Ridley Park, just outside Philadelphia in Delaware County. This project, along with countless service hours and volunteer work, allows Edward to achieve the highest rank given in the Boy Scouts of America.

With the help of his troop, local businesses and authorities, Edward’s idea for a 9/11 Memorial became a reality. The memorial consists of bricks laid for each victim of the September 11th attacks, with two paths making the shape of a peace sign.

In addition, two steel beams were crafted into the shape of the Twin Towers, finished with a coat of red, white, and blue. The beams will stand atop a base resembling the Pentagon, and the American flag serves as the cherry on top, draped over the monuments.

The "Spirit of America Park," found within Ridley Park, was given its first 9/11 Memorial back in 2001. Construction was overseen by Mayor Hank Eberle, and built by members of the community. Now, 17 years later, Caleo has rebuilt and restored the original monument along with the construction of his own.

The unveiling ceremony takes place Saturday, Sept. 15 at 27-45 W. Sellers Ave.

Son Kills Dad, Dumps Body Near Main Line Golf Club, PD Says

A son allegedly beat and stabbed his father to death then dumped the body near a Main Line country club in a murder case that spanned two suburban Philadelphia counties.

Delaware County District Attorney Kat Copeland joined Montgomery County DA Kevin Steele and both Yeadon and Lower Merion police Monday to announce homicide charges against Robert Coult III of Yeadon in the death of Robert Coult Jr.

The 59-year-old elder Coult's body was found by Philadelphia Country Club employees on the side of Spring Mill Road in Gladwyne Saturday morning. An autopsy found he died by blunt force trauma and stabbing, Yeadon police said.

"In this case the defendant brutally bludgeoned and repeatedly stabbed his own father to death," Copeland said.

The younger Coult repeatedly hit his father over the head with a hammer, then went to the kitchen, grabbed a knife and stabbed his father, Copeland said. He then used an electric saw to try to dismember the body.

The younger Coult, a 30-year-old resident of Yeadon Borough in Delco, was arraigned on criminal homicide, first-degree murder, abuse of a corpse and related charges on Monday morning and sent to Delco jail without bail.

Police responded to the Coult home on Providence Road in Yeadon Sunday afternoon after the elder Coult was reported missing, having last been heard from during a Friday evening phone call, police said.

They spoke to residents of the home then zeroed in on the younger Coult who was then arrested and charged. Coult III confessed to killing his father, police said.

Coult II faces life in prison. It was unclear if Coult III has an attorney who could comment on his behalf.

One person has died in a building collapse near Richmond, Virginia, after reports that multiple tornadoes touched down in the area.

The person was killed Monday when the Old Dominion Floor Company in Chesterfield collapsed, said emergency management coordinator Sherri Lafoon. Another person suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.

Everyone else in the building was accounted for.

The Virginia State Police said there were no other reported injuries, but they are tracking reports that multiple tornados touched down in the Richmond area. Fallen trees and building damage have also been reported.

NBC's weather team confirmed that tornado-producing storms in Richmond originated from the same system as Florence, which is blamed for the deaths of 24 people.

The National Weather Service advised people in the area to take cover amid storms capable of producing tornados after 4:30 p.m. Those warnings were allowed to expire after the storm weakened, NWS said.
