Teens Should Learn CPR Instead of Marching: Ex-Pa. Senator

Students should “take CPR classes” instead of demonstrating, former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum said one day after throngs of young people swarmed Washington and other cities across the country in the name of gun law reform.

Speaking on CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday morning, the former Pennsylvania lawmaker pushed back against organizers of Saturday's March for Our Lives.

“How about kids, instead of looking to someone else to solve their problem, do something about maybe taking CPR classes or maybe try to deal with situations where there is a violent shooter that you can actually respond to that,” he said.

Santorum added that students should look at how they can individually respond to the issue of gun violence and stop, for example, bullying in their schools or communities.

“They didn't take action to say, 'How do I, as an individual, deal with this problem? How am I going to do something about stopping bullying within my own community? What am I going to do to actually help respond to a shooter?,'” he said.

Pennsylvania State Sen. Vincent Hughes, a Democrat who represents portions of Philadelphia and Montgomery counties, tweeted that Santorum's comments were “Maddening! Absurd! Ridiculous!”

Philadelphia’s March for Our Lives drew thousands of people to Old City Saturday. Across the nation, hundreds of thousands more demonstrated. March for Our Lives organizers said more than 850,000 people participated in the national rally in D.C..

The fire started around 7:15 p.m. Sunday on the 400 block of West 23rd Street. Responding firefighters were able to place the flames under control around 8:25 p.m. The house is completely gutted. Neighbors say the fire spread quickly.

"Crews are in there knocking down a little bit of hot spots, checking for any extension," said Wilmington Fire Department Chief John Looney. "Right now we have our fire marshal's office. They're on scene along with the Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office conducting the investigation which is going to be ongoing throughout the evening."

Two children and a woman were found in a second floor bedroom inside the home. The children were taken to A.I. duPont Hospital while the woman was taken to Christiana Hospital. Officials say one of the victims died at the hospital from burns and smoke inhalation though they did not reveal whether the victim who died was the woman or one of the two children.

Repair work is set to begin on America’s oldest bridge still in use which will lead to detours for drivers in the Philadelphia area over the next few months.

From Monday through the end of August, workers will rehabilitate the stone arch U.S. 13 (Frankford Avenue) Bridge over Pennypack Creek by removing and rebuilding the wall. The project will also include installing new protection measures where needed.

The bridge will be closed and detoured between Solly Avenue and Ashburner Street. During the five-month closure, motorists on Frankford Avenue will be detoured over Rhawn Street, Torresdale Avenue and Linden Avenue. The detour routes will be posted for pedestrians at Pennypack Creek.

The Frankford Avenue Bridge, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was built in 1697 and reconstructed in 1893. It’s a three-span stone masonry and concrete closed spandrel arch structure. The bridge is 73-feet long, 50-feet wide and carries about 14,745 vehicles a day, including SEPTA’s Route 66 trolley.

Villanova Returns to Final Four: With all of the underdogs and upsets that have upended the NCAA tournament, no one has managed to come close to Villanova. The 2016 national champions are headed back to the Final Four, thanks to a fourth straight double-digit victory in a month of March where they've played every bit like the No. 1 seed they earned. "This tournament's a crazy tournament. Anybody can beat anybody," guard Jalen Brunson said after the Wildcats beat Texas Tech 71-59 in a cold-shooting East regional championship on Sunday to send Villanova back to the Final Four for the second time in three years. The Wildcats (34-4) will play fellow No. 1 seed Kansas, which beat Duke 85-81 in overtime later Sunday. They will join 11th-seeded Loyola-Chicago and its telegenic nun, along with No. 3 seed Michigan in the national semifinals on Saturday in San Antonio.

Stormy Daniels Says She Was Threatened Over Trump Story: Adult film star Stormy Daniels says she was threatened to keep silent about an alleged sexual encounter with Donald Trump in 2006, telling her story in a highly anticipated interview with CBS' "60 Minutes" broadcast Sunday. Daniels said she was threatened by an unidentified man in Las Vegas to keep quiet about her alleged relationship with Trump, an incident that she said happened while she was with her young daughter. She said in the interview that she had one encounter of consensual sex with the future president. "He knows I'm telling the truth," said Daniels, whose legal name is Stephanie Clifford. She does not allege that she was coerced in her encounter with Trump, saying, "This is not a 'Me too.' I was not a victim." The adult film actress provided little new evidence of her alleged 2006 affair with Trump but said she faced intimidation tactics aimed at ensuring her silence in 2011.

Traffic Alert: Avoid I-95 Through Delaware If You Can

If you use Interstate 95 in Delaware be prepared to slow down throughout the day Monday.

Due to a crash with the traffic barriers, DelDOT announced Monday morning that the left lanes in both the northbound and southbound directions would be closed near Exit 6/Maryland Avenue/Martin Luther King Boulevard and Frawley Stadium in Wilmington.

DelDOT is warning motorists needing to use I-95 to anticipate delays as crews work to realign the jersey barriers. The work is expected to last until at least the evening rush.

Interstate 495 can be used as an alternate route.

The jersey barriers became displaced after a driver struck the barriers in the northbound lanes and pushed the barriers into the southbound lanes, DelDOT said.

Aer Lingus Connects Philly With Ireland

Philadelphia is getting a little bit closer to Ireland.

Aer Lingus, Ireland’s flag-carrying airline, is now Philadelphia Airport’s newest nonstop carrier.

The first Aer Lingus flight arrived from Dublin at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) on Sunday.

The aircraft passed under a traditional water cannon salute as it taxied to its gate after the inaugural flight.

City and airport officials including Mayor Jim Kenney, airport CEO Chellie Cameron and local elected officials greeted the first flight while passengers awaiting to board the flight back to Ireland enjoyed music, shepherd’s pie, Philly cheesesteaks and cake to celebrate the event.

Aer Lingus is the second foreign flag carrier to introduce service at PHL within the past year and sixth foreign airline overall.

“Aer Lingus is going to bring some much needed competition to this heavily traveled route,” Cameron said. “Irish born folks want to fly on the carrier from their homeland and when they see Aer Lingus they will be more inspired to visit Philadelphia than they were before.”

One passenger on the flight said she is glad there are now more options for people to travel to Philadelphia from Ireland and vice versa.

Besides offering a direct route to Ireland, passengers can fly from Philly to 21 destinations in Europe and Abu Dhabi through Dublin.

“It’s nice knowing that they fly from here to Dublin because once you’re in Dublin you can go literally across the entire world,” Jenna McKinney said after taking Aer Lingus’ first flight to Philadelphia. “Just knowing that you can go to an English speaking country, then bounce out and go back to an English speaking country makes a difference.”

To start, the flight, which arrives in the afternoon in Philly and takes off for Dublin at 5:30 p.m. (arriving at 5:10 a.m. the next morning), is set for four days a week. The route will go daily beginning May 18.

Longtime GOP Rep. Bows Out in Pa. Race. Now What?

          $
          0
          0

A little-known tax lawyer is now the lone Republican actively running to represent Chester County after U.S. Rep. Ryan Costello suddenly announced his retirement from politics Sunday evening.

If Costello files his paperwork to withdraw from the ballot by Tuesday’s deadline, Greg McCauley will face off against Democratic Air Force veteran Chrissy Houlahan.

If Costello does not file his paperwork on time, his name will remain on the May primary ballot. That paperwork has not been filed, according to the Pennsylvania Department of State.

“As of right now, I am planning to take him on,” McCauley told NBC10. “I believe he has waffled on a lot of issues and has not supported the party.”

So who is this relatively unknown candidate?

The Saint Joseph’s University alum has spent more than 35 years practicing tax law on the Chesco side of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. He is an NRA member, and owned and operated nine Wendy’s franchises, according to his biography. He received his law degree from Widener University.

McCauley grew up in Delaware County and spent several formative years in Washington, D.C., he told NBC10. His father worked for both the Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Trade Commission under former President Dwight Eisenhower.

Despite his experience in D.C, McCauley didn’t consider running for office until recently.

“I’ve always been a workaholic,” he said. “I never really spent the time in politics that others have.”

More than anything, McCauley wants to see a balanced budget and job creation, he told NBC10. But he is also a proponent of immigration work visas, a sticking point for many traditional Republicans.

“I don’t think you’re going to deport 30 million people,” he said, referring the number of undocumented immigrants in the country. “I don’t think all the planes in the U.S. would hold 30 million people.”

A 2016 report put the number of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. closer to 11 million.

Costello also broke with many Republicans on the issue of immigration. He once described himself as a “middle-of-the-roader” and introduced legislation last year for a program similar to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

His ability to bring in swing voters was key to winning a district that narrowly favored Hillary Clinton.

But after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court issued a new voting map, Costello’s district turned blue with the addition of Reading. His chances at re-election narrowed, and Costello joined unsuccessful attempts to block the new map from taking effect in the 2018 midterms.

In his filing, Costello argued that he was suddenly forced to run in a new district where his incumbency advantage no longer mattered. The courts rejected the claims, increasing Democrats' chances of picking up seats this year.

State and national Republicans were quick to call Costello’s retirement disappointing, and vowed to continue their fight for the 6th.

It remains unclear whether McCauley will receive an official GOP endorsement despite being the only active Republican candidate. Monday was the first time McCauley spoke with party leadership since announcing his campaign, he said.

As of Monday evening, McCauley has not started fundraising for his campaign. He told NBC10 he is waiting until his petition to run for office is made official by state election officials.
