Two people died after an SUV crashed into a pole and caught fire in Tabernacle, New Jersey Monday.

The GMC Yukon struck a pole at Flyatt and Carranza roads shortly before noon. The vehicle caught fire and two people inside died from their injuries. Police have not yet revealed what led to the crash.

The crash occurred only a few feet away from Sequoia Alternative Program, which is part of the Lenape Regional School District, on Carranza Road. More than 50 students and employees from the program were evacuated due to roads being closed in the area and concerns about buses not being able to get through later in the day. The students and staff were taken to a transportation yard about five miles away where parents picked their children up.

Police have not yet identified the two people killed in the crash. They continue to investigate.

Vandal Damages Menorahs in Margate

As the celebration of Hanukkah continues, police are trying to find the vandal who damaged three menorahs in an Atlantic County community.

The vandalism was discovered Monday morning at three locations in Margate, New Jersey. The city-owned menorah at Margate’s municipal pier was toppled while the bulbs were smashed and the cords were cut. A few of the branches of the menorah outside the Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community Center were broken while the menorah at Margate’s recreational complex was damaged as well. Police say it was the fourth time in four weeks that the menorah at the recreational complex was vandalized.

“It’s just really said,” said Linda Stefanides of Ventnor, New Jersey. “I don’t understand. I really don’t.”

Margate Police believe all of the incidents are connected and they’re being investigated as acts of hate.

“We’re treating it as a bias crime at this time,” said Detective Chris Taroncher of the Margate Police Department. “The prosecutor’s office has already been notified. The state police get notified.”

The menorah at the pier was later repaired while the menorah at the JCC is in the process of being fixed. The city has also put a replacement menorah high up on a flag pole at the recreational complex.

“The menorah is going back up tonight because it’s a symbol of victory and light and we want to make sure that continues,” said Jack Fox of the Milton & Betty Katz JCC.

If you have any information on any of the incidents, please call Margate Police.

Amtrak Train, Speeding at 80 MPH, Derails Off Wash. Bridge: An Amtrak train making the first-ever run along a faster new route hurtled off an overpass south of Seattle on Monday and spilled some of its cars onto the highway below, killing at least three people, injuring dozens and crushing two vehicles, authorities said. Attention quickly turned to the train's speed. Federal investigators say the train was traveling at 80 mph (129 kph) in a 30 mph (48 kph) zone. Bella Dinh-Zarr, an NTSB board member, said at a Monday night news conference that information from the event data recorder in the rear locomotive provided information about the train's speed. Dinh-Zarr said it's not yet known what caused the train to derail and that "it's too early to tell" why it was going so fast. She said federal investigators will likely be on scene for a week or more.

Americans Vote Same Word Most 'Annoying' for 9th Year in a Row

        $

        0

There is one word so apparently reviled by Americans that it has been named the "most annoying" -- out of all the words and phrases there are in casual conversation -- for nine straight years.

According to a Marist Poll out Monday, that word -- the word you may want to avoid using at family or friends' holiday gatherings -- is "whatever."

That said, it's not quite as hated as it has been in years past -- probably at least in part because of the millennial impact. Marist says 33 percent of Americans, down from 38 percent last year, consider "whatever" to be the most annoying word or phrase, but people younger than 45 aren't as perturbed by it as are their older counterparts.

"Fake news" comes in second, with 23 percent finding it the most annoying, followed by "no offense, but" (20 percent), "literally (11 percent) and "you know what I mean" (10 percent).

There was some variation along political lines. Of Independents, Republicans and Democrats, Independents hated "whatever" most (35 percent), while Democrats were most bothered by "fake news" (29 percent). It also varied by location -- respondents in the northeast, for example, were much more annoyed by "whatever" (38 percent) compared with their regional counterparts, but had less of an issue with "literally."

The results of based on a national sample of 1,074 adults surveyed by phone between Nov. 6 and Nov. 9. Click here for the complete methodology and findings.

“Since 2015, we have seen a narrowing between ‘whatever’ and the rest of the list,” Dr. Lee M. Miringoff, director of The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, said in a statement. “It has been more than 20 years since ‘whatever’ first gained infamy in the movie Clueless. While the word irks older Americans, those who are younger might not find ‘whatever’ to be so annoying.”

Crash Closes Pa. Turnpike in Bucks County Indefinitely

A crash involving three tractor-trailers and a passenger vehicle closed an 8-mile stretch of the westbound Pennsylvania Turnpike indefinitely Tuesday morning and left at least two people hurt.

The wreck just after 6 a.m. blocked all lanes near milepost 351 between the Bensalem and Willow Grove Interchanges, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission said.

The wreck caused more than 100 gallons of diesel fuel to spill down an embankment, Pennsylvania State Police said. As hazmat crews clean-up the spill, police implemented "Plan X," which calls for the complete shutdown of lanes.

The best bet is to avoid the roadway as the turnpike commission urged motorists to find alternate routes.

Need a detour? Drivers can take U.S. Route 1 south to Route 132 west to state Route 611 South to the Willow Grove Interchange. Expect traffic slowdowns along that route.

The crash left two people hurt with undisclosed injuries, police said.

After Another Crash, Cyclists Stand Up for Bike Lane Safety

        $

        0

After two bicyclists were struck by trucks in Center City bike lanes in recent weeks, advocates on Tuesday formed a human barrier between cyclists and vehicles as part of a push for heightened bicycle safety on Philadelphia streets.

The "human bike lane" action Tuesday morning featured cyclists, pedestrians and motorists standing along the 13th Street bike lane from Pine to Spruce streets. Some of the advocates held signs and gave high fives to passing cyclists as they acted as a buffer between vehicles and bicycles.

On Friday morning, a delivery truck hit Becca Refford as she headed to a doctor's appointment, her family told NBC10's Aaron Baskerville Monday night. She was going north in the bike lane along 13th Street when a truck turned right into her.

The 24-year-old was pulled under the truck's wheels leaving her with a broken pelvis, bruised lungs, cracked ribs and a broken foot.

Witnesses said the truck driver didn't even realize he hit her, instead thinking he hit a curb, said Eric Refford, the woman's father.

"Minor changes would save lives," Eric Refford said.

Becca Refford remained at a Center City hospital Tuesday awaiting a second surgery. From her hospital bed, she watched some of Tuesday's action via FaceTime and thanked strangers for all the support she has received.

"It's fantastic and I just want to say thank you so much," she said.

Thirteenth Street, a northbound one-way street, and Pine Street, which travels east, both have dedicated bicycle lanes on the right hand side. There are no barricades separating the lanes from car traffic. Some of the paint showing the divide has faded.

"I should be able to ride my bike and not fear being killed," said Eileen Bunch, who rode in from Collingswood, New Jersey for Tuesday's event.

Becca Refford is the second woman struck in a bike lane in recent weeks. Last month, a privately-owned trash truck struck and killed 24-year-old Emily Fredricks as she biked to work along Spruce Street at 11th Street. Spruce Street also has a dedicated, but unprotected bike lane.

Fredricks' death — the third this year, according to the Bicycle Coalition of Philadelphia — and Refford's crash have put a renewed spotlight on cycling safety in Center City where cars, trucks, buses and bikes share the road daily.

The current bike lanes, like the one along 13th, are sometimes used by motorists loading or unloading, forcing bikers back into the flow of vehicular traffic.

Bicycle advocates are fighting to get better safety infrastructure. Some streets, like Chestnut Street in West Philadelphia, now have posts that divide drivers from cyclists as part of the city's Vision Zero plan to create better bike lanes. Part of South Street is also set to be divided.

City officials are also considering raising the grade of the bike lane to better separate it from vehicular traffic.

A driver crashed an SUV onto the front yards of two Philadelphia row homes Tuesday leaving one person hurt.

The Blue Chevy Trailblazer came to rest on the front steps of two homes along Andrews Avenue in the city’s West Oak Lane neighborhood after crashing shortly before 11 a.m. The SUV came to a rest against a railing and people used 2 x 4s to keep it propped up on the sloped lawn of one home.

One person was injured, the fire department said.

No word yet on what caused the driver to lose control. Andrews Avenue curves as it approaches 71st Avenue nearby.

Great Grandfather Found Stabbed to Death Inside Home

Loved ones are mourning a great grandfather who was found stabbed to death inside the West Philadelphia home he had lived in for decades.

Family members say a relative found 85-year-old Willie Cooper unresponsive inside his home on the 5300 block of Addison Street at 2:33 p.m. Tuesday. He was suffering from multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead by responding medics at 3 p.m.

No arrests have been made and a weapon has not been recovered.

Police say there were signs of force at Cooper's home, but it's unclear if it was forced entry or forced exit.

Cooper was a popular figure in his neighborhood who had lived on the block for at least 40 years. He also lived alone in his home. Family members say Cooper knew everyone in the neighborhood and don't understand why he would be a target.

"He was a good man," said Cooper's relative Arnetta Archer Minto. "He helped everybody on the block. Whoever did this needs to be caught. My cousin never hurt nobody."

If you have any information on the incident, please call Philadelphia Police.
