17 Arrested, Cop Punched in Face at Hoboken SantaCon: Police

Seventeen people were arrested, including a woman who allegedly punched an officer in the face, at Hoboken’s SantaCon on Saturday, according to the city’s police chief, who was providing real-time updates of the police response on Twitter.

“The @HobokenPD HQ has 9 prisoners in it now from the first 5 hrs of SantaCon,” Chief Ken Ferrante tweeted shortly after 4 p.m. A couple of hours later he announced a 10th arrest for disorderly conduct. He said there were more arrests this year than in a quarter of the time last year.

[[464661413, C]]

In all, police issued 51 summonses for drinking in the street, public urination and disorderly conduct, he tweeted on Sunday. He said officers also issued 32 summonses to drivers.

The tweets followed a stream of others by Ferrante. He said dozens of extra officers were patrolling the streets to look for unruly people taking part in the annual event, which sees hundreds dressed as Santa hopping from bar to bar.

Like other SantaCons, the bar crawl has come under fire for the rowdy behavior of some of its merrymakers. NJ Transit prohibited all beverages on its trains and buses Saturday and part of Sunday ahead of the event.

“The @HobokenPD officers out on the streets will do their best to keep these revelers under control, and when these Santas break the law, they will be there to summons or arrest them,” Ferrante wrote earlier in the day.

[[463065003, C]]

There was a large fight at a bar on Washington Street resulting in three arrests for assault, and ambulances were being dispatched to pizzerias and diners to take drunk people to hospitals for detox, according to Ferrante, who said some nearby bars were over-occupancy by hundreds of people.

Most notably, one woman involved in a fight was arrested after she punched a responding officer in the face, Ferrante said, adding that she would face a charge of aggravated assault.

Ferrante said no officers sustained injuries that needed medical treatment.

Trooper Fatally Shoots Driver After Being Dragged: Police

A state trooper shot and killed a driver who dragged him following a traffic stop in Wilmington, Delaware, according to investigators.

Police say the trooper was on patrol Friday shortly before 4:30 p.m. when he spotted a burgundy Honda Civic strike a pole on Boxwood Road near Centerville Road. The vehicle fled the crash scene and continued driving erratically.

The trooper followed the driver, identified by investigators as Adam Radcliffe, 30, of Wilmington, to the Kirkwood Plaza Shopping Center. As the trooper walked over to his vehicle, Radcliffe allegedly sped off. Police say Radcliffe continued driving, dragging the trooper as he was attached to the passenger side door.

The vehicle continued speeding down the access road for Kirkwood Plaza before turning left onto Farrand Drive. The Trooper then took out his weapon and opened fire, striking Radcliffe, police said. Radcliffe continued speeding down Farrand Drive into the neighborhood, according to investigators.

Troopers began searching the area and found the Honda Civic off of Hammond Place at the end of Farrand Drive where it drove through a fence into a small creek.

The troopers removed Radcliffe from the vehicle and performed CPR. Responding medical personnel transported him to Christiana Hospital where he died from his injuries.

The 37-year-old trooper was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at the hospital and later released. He has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The trooper has been with the Delaware State Police for 11 years and is assigned to Troop 6 patrol.

If you have any information on the incident, please contact Detective M. Csapo of the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit by calling 302-741-2729. You may also call Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.

A 12-year-old has been arrested in a threat on social media that prompted cancellation of classes at a Pennsylvania school district, police said.

The Upper Yoder Township police department said the juvenile acknowledged having sent the Twitter message threatening the Westmont Hilltop School District.

Chief Donald Hess said late Friday night that the juvenile is in cyber school and doesn't attend classes in the district.

The school district canceled classes Friday because of the threat, the second such closure that week. An earlier threat was deemed not credible.

Superintendent Timothy Williams said on the school's website Saturday that classes would resume Monday "with the suspect now in custody and confirmation from law enforcement that the threat is no longer present."

Wolf Says Leach Should Resign Over Misconduct Allegations

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf wants a Democratic state senator to resign over published allegations of inappropriate conduct toward women.

The Philadelphia Inquirer on Sunday quoted anonymous former campaign and legislative staffers and advisers accusing 56-year-old Sen. Daylin Leach of behavior ranging from highly sexualized jokes and comments to touching they considered inappropriate.

In a statement Sunday, the Democratic governor called Leach “a leader on important policy issues” but says his “conduct cannot be excused.”

Leach is now running for Congress in the Philadelphia suburbs. His statement blames the accusations on an unnamed political opponent and denies he’s ever inappropriately touched women.

Wolf says there’s a lack of “adequate structure for victims to report this type of behavior.” He’s asking political leaders to “commit to real reform that protects victims.”

Eagles Clinch 1st Round Bye in 34 to 29 Win Over Giants

$

0

The Eagles are 1-0 in the second Nick Foles Era.

It just wasn't easy.

The lowly Giants put up a pretty good fight on Sunday at MetLife Stadium. But Foles played pretty well, special teams came up big and the Eagles eventually made a late fourth-down stop on defense in a 34-29 win.

Phew.

With the win, the Eagles improved to 12-2 on the season and clinched a first-round bye in this year's playoffs. Another goal accomplished. They didn't clinch home-field advantage this weekend because the Vikings beat the Bengals. That could come next week.

With the loss, the Giants fell to 2-12 in their miserable season. They're just waiting out the rest of the year.

It turns out Foles might not be the problem down the stretch. While Foles turned in a pretty efficient performance through was looked like rust, the Eagles' defense struggled again.

That's been a theme over the last few weeks. Jim Schwartz's unit that started the season so strong has become a liability recently. The Birds might not have to worry about Schwartz leaving for a head-coaching gig anytime soon.

On 4th-and-goal with under a minute left, the Eagles got a huge stop to wrap up the game. Corey Graham covered Evan Engram and the pass went incomplete. The Giants wanted a flag but didn't get one.

The Eagles came out really slow and let the Giants get up on them 20-7 before a couple big defensive and special teams plays gave the Eagles' offense short fields. The Eagles took a 21-20 lead before the G-men kicked a field goal to go up 23-21 at halftime.

Turning point
The Eagles just desperately needed a play and Ronald Darby provided it in the second quarter. The cornerback stepped in front of a pass from Eli Manning to pick it off, then returned it 37-yards. That set up the Eagles at the Giants' 20-yard line. The scored a touchdown to cut into their early lead and it seemed to flip momentum. Sure, the Eagles trailed at halftime, but things had turned around from a disastrous start.

Key stat
The Eagles have gotten back-to-back four-touchdown performances from two different quarterbacks.

According to the NFL, this is the first time teammates have thrown four touchdowns in back-to-back games since 2011, when the Packers had Aaron Rodgers and Matt Flynn do it.

Offensive stud
Foles missed a few passes, but played a pretty solid game. He had three touchdown passes in the first half, making it his eighth-career three-touchdown game. He then added another TD pass in the third.

Offensive dud

LeGarrette Blount really took a backseat to Jay Ajayi on Sunday. He got a huge carry on 4th-and-1 in the first half and couldn't convert.

Defensive stud
The entire defense didn't play great, but Brandon Graham seemed to have a good afternoon again.

Defensive dud
Jalen Mills didn't have his best game. He was beaten badly for a touchdown and had some costly defensive holding calls go against him. Aside from his interception (which was big), Darby really struggled too.

Key plays
•The Eagles stopped the Giants on 4th-and-goal inside a minute to save the victory.

•After the Malcolm Jenkins' field goal block, the Eagles put together a FG drive of their own to take a 34-29 lead with just under four minutes left in the game.

•Jenkins got in to block a 48-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. The field goal would have given the Giants a lead. This came after the Eagles had already blocked a punt and extra point in the game.

•The Eagles' defense forced a three-and-out in the third quarter, but a neutral zone infraction from Najee Goode on the punt gave the Giants new life and Manning hit Tavarres King on a 57-yard touchdown pass. After the two-point conversion failed, the Eagles led 31-29.

•Nelson Agholor made a tremendous touchdown catch over Darryl Morris in the end zone to put the Eagles up 31-23. After the score, Alshon Jeffery tossed up an alley-oop to Agholor, who threw it down. Ajayi had a big impact on that drive, rushing for a 22-yarder and catching a 32-yarder.

•Jake Elliott kicked a 28-yarder to give the Eagles a 24-23 lead in the third quarter. Foles had a strong drive.

•After the Eagles took a lead, the Giants converted two big 3rd downs and drove down the field to kick a 28-yard field goal to take it back. They went up 23-21.

•Kamu Grugier-Hill broke through the line to block a punt in the second quarter. That set the Eagles up inside the Giants' 20-yard line. A few plays later, Foles hit a wide-open Trey Burton for a 13-yard touchdown pass on third down to give the Eagles a 21-20 lead.

•On 3rd down, the Eagles desperately needed someone to make a play and Darby obliged. The corner stepped in front of an Manning to pick it off and then returned it 37 yards to set up an Eagles scoring drive.

Foles hit Zach Ertz for a 10-yard touchdown pass to cut into the lead, 20-14.

•On 4th-and-1 from the Giants' 44-yard line in the second quarter, Blount was stuffed for no gain to turn the ball back over the Giants.

•Early in the second quarter, Sterling Shepard got open with a rub play on 3rd-and-2 and went for a 67-yard touchdown to put the Giants up 20-7. Rodney McLeod made a poor attempt at a tackle near the sideline. Shepard has caught two of the three longest passes against the Eagles this season.

•Jalen Mills was crushed on a double move in the red zone. He bit hard on a 13-yard touchdown catch by King to give the Giants a 13-6 lead.

•The Eagles responded with a 75-yard drive of their own. The big play came when Foles avoided pressure to throw the ball deep to Torrey Smith. Smith couldn't catch it, but drew a pass interference call and the Eagles scored a few plays later to go up 7-6.

•The Giants marched down the field on the first drive of the game. The big play came when Darby was beaten on a double move by Roger Lewis Jr. for a gain of 18. The drive went 75 yards. Derek Barnett blocked the extra point to make it 6-0 Giants.

Injuries
Stefen Wisniewksi (ankle) missed the game. Chance Warmack started in his place. Robinson left in the second half to be evaluated for a concussion.

Up next

The Eagles return home for the last two weeks of the season. They play the Raiders on Christmas Day and then the Cowboys to finish the regular season.

Man Hears Fiancée’s Scream as Robber Brutally Attacks Her

A man heard his fiancée’s scream on the phone as a robber who had been following her home viciously attacked her.

Cliff McBride told NBC10 his fiancée Patricia was at the Rite Aid at 63rd and Race streets in West Philadelphia shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday. She left the store and was walking home when an unidentified man began following her.

“And she was talking to me the whole time,” McBride said. “She’s like, ‘I ignored him,’ and she’s like, ‘I’m walking out now and he’s following me out the store.’”

As McBride stayed on the phone, he heard a disturbing sound.

“A blood-curdling scream,” McBride said. “Phone hung up.”

The phone went dead as the man who had been following Patricia began to beat her over the face and head with an object. He then stole her coat, cigarettes, keys and $10 before fleeing the scene, leaving Patricia in a pool of blood that remained on the snow and sidewalk a day later.

Patricia was taken to the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center where she was treated for facial injuries that were so severe she was unable to speak to police.

Doctors plan on wiring Patricia’s jaw shut and reconstructing parts of her face.

“I didn’t recognize her,” McBride said. “Teeth hanging out of her face. Blood, just blood. A pool of blood, I mean, just everywhere.”

Patricia’s horrific injuries have taken a toll on McBride emotionally.

“I can’t even go there to visit her because I can’t…because I was on the phone with her and I just couldn’t get there quick enough,” McBride said while fighting back tears.

On Sunday, police picked up a 19-year-old suspect shortly after a midday strong-armed robbery along the 4100 block of Chester Avenue. That attack seemed similar to Saturday's attack, police said. As investigators questioned the man, he allegedly confessed to both incidents, police said.

As of Monday morning, police had yet to identify the suspect.

Washington Crossing Re-Enactment in Serious Jeopardy: The annual re-enactment of George Washington's daring 1776 crossing of the Delaware River just north of Trenton draws large crowds of families and history fans to both sides of the river in Pennsylvania and New Jersey each year on Christmas. But the re-enactors may be kept out of the water this year unless Mother Nature provides some help. Organizers say a "pretty significant amount" of precipitation will have to fall in the coming days to raise the river's water levels in time for the event, adding that where and when any snow or rain occurs are also important factors. But they stress that all other events planned at the park on the day of the crossing _ including Washington rallying the troops and other historical speeches and processions — will still take place. Thousands of people turn out each year for the event — the trek turned the tide of the Revolutionary War — between Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania, and Titusville, New Jersey.

Sudden Power Outage Brings Atlanta Airport to a Standstill: A sudden power outage caused by a fire in an underground electrical facility brought the world's busiest airport to a standstill Sunday, grounding more than 1,000 flights in Atlanta just days before the start of the Christmas travel rush. More than 10 hours after the blackout began, authorities announced that electricity had been fully restored to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International. Mayor Kasim Reed tweeted Sunday night at 9:55 pm local time that all power had been fully restored. Passengers at the airport were left in the dark when the lights went out at around 1 p.m. The outage halted all outgoing flights, and arriving planes were held on the ground at their point of departure. International flights were being diverted, officials said. The City of Atlanta said on its Twitter page that it would provide shuttle service to the Georgia Convention Center for travelers in need of a place to stay and Chick-fil-A would be provided.

Former Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels and his wife, Heidi, are donating their $9.75 million mansion in Branson, Missouri, to charity.

The home on Table Rock Lake will be given to Camp Barnabas, a nonprofit organization in southwest Missouri.

The organization helps individuals with special needs and chronic illnesses.

"Seeing the faces, hearing the laughter, reading the stories of the kids they serve; there is truly nothing like it," Hamels, who now pitches for the Rangers, said. "Barnabas makes dreams come true, and we felt called to help them in a big way."

The 32,000-square-foot mansion will be the largest gift in the history of Barnabas, according to a press release by the Hamels Foundation

The Hamels began building the mansion in 2012 when he was still with the Phillies. It went up for sale in August of this year. The home sits on 104.7 acres of land with more than 1,700 feet of shoreline along Table Rock Lake.

"Our mission is to change lives through disability ministry, and we've been strategically looking for ways to expand our ministry outside of a summer camp," said Jason Brawner, CEO of Camp Barnabas. "We have no doubt this gift will allow us to do just that."

A gunshot victim collapsed inside a Northeast Philadelphia Wawa after fleeing from a robbery, Philadelphia Police said.

The man ran into the convenience store at Tyson and Castor avenues after the violent robbery nearby around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, police said. People in the store then called 911.

The 25-year-old man was bleeding from his head and shoulder when he entered the store and fell to the ground. He was conscious when officers arrived a short time later, Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

The man told investigators he was walking from his girlfriend’s home a few blocks away at Magee and Castor avenues when a man with facial tattoos and wearing a dark gray sweat suit pistol-whipped him while demanding money and a cellphone. The man handed over his iPhone then started to run away, police said.

"While he was running away that’s when the shots were fired," Small said.

The man was struck in the right shoulder, police said. He also suffered a laceration to his head from being hit with the gun.

Investigators hoped surveillance video would help them as they searched for clues. Anyone with information is urged to contact Philadelphia Police.
