Comcast, Pa. AG, NBC10 Team Up to Promote Internet Safety

At Mayfair Community Center in Northeast Philadelphia, seniors are on a new adventure — taking computer classes to learn the ins-and-outs of cyber safety.

Their efforts come as Comcast is adding more users to its Internet Essentials program, geared to connect low-income households to the internet.

"With all the people we’re connecting to the internet, we’re now turning to the next phase which is how do we make sure they’re protected," Comcast senior executive vice president David L. Cohen told NBC10.

The news station and the Pennsylvania Attorney General's office is also joining in the educational online safeguarding effort, which will combine public service announcements, free in-person training programs, and free educational resources including videos, brochures, and booklets that will also be available online.

"With this partnership, we’re doubling our efforts to educate seniors on Internet safety and do more to protect Pennsylvanians from the scams, fraud, identify theft, and financial exploitation that is costing America’s seniors $3 billion every year," state Attorney General Josh Shapiro said.

Pennsylvania has the fifth most seniors of any state, with 2.2 million residents over the age of 65.  That number is expected to increase over the next several years. According to a Pew Research Center study, 64 percent of seniors now regularly use the internet.

“As a media and technology company, Comcast is uniquely positioned to contribute to this effort,” Cohen said.  “We also know that one of the major reasons why low-income households, and especially seniors, don’t purchase internet service at home is because they’re afraid of it.  They’re afraid of online scams and of being taken advantage of.  Fortunately, as part of our Internet Essentials program, we have an outstanding network of nonprofit partners in whom we can invest to teach more seniors, adults, and students that the internet can be perfectly safe once you know how to use it and what to watch out for.”

Since 2011, Internet Essentials, Comcast’s signature community investment program and the nation’s largest and most successful broadband adoption initiative for low-income families, has connected more than four million low-income Americans, living in more than one million households, to the Internet. The number includes 272,000 residents across the state of Pennsylvania, which makes it the fourth most successful state in terms of participation in the program with nearly 125,000 from the city of Philadelphia alone.

“I want to commend Comcast and the Office of the Attorney General for their partnership to help protect Philadelphia’s residents when they are online,” Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said.  “The internet is an amazing resource, but our citizens need to be aware of and educated about what they can do to be safe online.  This effort will go a long way to reinvigorate that dialogue.”

Shapiro pledged to expand senior education efforts by increasing his Office of Public Engagement’s outreach on Internet safety and producing new educational content including videos, brochures, and public service announcements.  Through partnerships with Comcast, nonprofits, and other advocates, the Office of Public Engagement will double the number of seniors it educates about Internet safety from an estimated 25,000 in 2016 to at least 50,000 in 2018.

Ric Harris, president and general manager of NBC10 and Telemundo62, also announced that his TV stations would produce a series of free educational videos, using its anchors and on-air talent, to address a variety of internet safety and security topics for seniors, parents, and students.  The videos will be made in both English and in Spanish.

“NBC 10 and Telemundo62 are thrilled to bring our talent and production resources to this partnership,” said Harris.  “Accessible and engaging content from a trusted news station can go a long way to raise awareness and keep seniors and families safe online.  Our goal will be to tackle a variety of internet safety topics like online scams to watch out for, how to create strong passwords, how to protect your privacy online, how to deal with cyberbullying, and more.  We’ll break these topics down into simple and informative video content, which is exactly what our news teams do best.”

As part of a presentation on cyber safety with a group of school children at NBC10's studios Thursday, Cohen had a surprise for the kids — new laptops for each of them to take home.

Forty-eight New Jersey state troopers are heading to Puerto Rico to aid in the recovery efforts on the island devastated by Hurricane Maria last month.

Gov. Chris Christie, in authorizing their deployment, touted the experience that the state police received in the days and weeks after Superstorm Sandy struck New Jersey in Oct. 2012.

“Their experience should prove invaluable to Puerto Rico and we wish them well on their mission," he said during an event at state police headquarters in Ewing, Mercer County. "We will continue to deploy help as needed that has been requested by the Governor of Puerto Rico.”

The troopers are from Troop B in Totowa and Troop C in Hamilton Township, Mercer County. Once they arrive in Puerto Rico this weekend, they will meet up with an advance team of state police troopers already on the island.

The troopers will focus primarily on law enforcement and humanitarian aid.

Christie last week authorized the mobilization of 1,100 emergency responders and soldiers to deploy to Puerto Rico, which includes the state troopers and 500 National Guardsmen.

Christie also wanted to remind the public that two New Jersey National Guard armoies are still accepting donations to Puerto Rico. His office listed the following suggested items that elected officials, community leaders and organizations should collect:

Baby food, batteries, box fans, canned goods, cots, cleaning supplies, diapers, feminine hygiene products, flash lights, flood pumps, hand sanitizer, first aid items, leather work gloves, new underwear and socks, new bed pillows and blankets, toiletries, utility knives and high capacity generators to restore power for hospitals, water service, and flood pumps.

The armories will not accept any items dropped off for deliver and all deliveries must be scheduled by calling 1-833-NJ-HELPS. Financial donations may be made by visiting www.NJ4PR.org.

A Delaware high school student with special needs was assaulted by another student and then suspended for using inappropriate language.

Now, the victim’s mom says her son doesn’t want to go back to school.

Rose Boyles said her son, Josh, was beat up in the Caesar Rodney High School cafeteria after an argument with another student over a girl.

Just when her son through the argument seemed to be over, felt a punch to the back of his head, Boyles said. And the blows kept coming.

“The boy jumped over the table and continued to punch my son,” Boyles said.

A video showed her son attempting to protect his head as the second student threw punch after punch. Josh remained on the ground for the duration of the attack.

After the ordeal ended, Josh was suspended for two days while the student who punched him was charged with offensive touching.

“It’s more than offensive touching,” Boyles said. “It is actual assault.”

Josh, who has special needs, refuses to return to school and Boyles said she wouldn’t feel comfortable sending him there anyway.

Caesar Rodney High School said in a statement that “disciplinary action was taken and an arrest was made."

President Donald Trump is heading to Harrisburg next week to make his case for an overhaul of the nation's tax code.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Friday the plan "is really a jobs bill."

Trump's trip Wednesday to the state capital is aimed at building his case that tax cuts would help drive the economy.

Trump has promised Americans "the largest tax cut in our country's history." But for the poorest Americans households, Trump's plan would amount to an average tax cut of about $60 a year, according to the Tax Policy Center. Middle-income families would get about $300 on average. Most of the cuts would go to the wealthiest Americans.

Trump last year became the first Republican presidential candidate to win Pennsylvania since 1988.

Police are searching for a 19-year-old man accused of throwing a puppy out of the third-floor window of a New Jersey home.

The Mercer County Prosecutor's office said in a statement that Anthony Matlock threw a four-month-old terrier named Dutchess out of a Trenton home during a domestic dispute Sept. 21. The dog landed in the basement of a vacant property next door.

Prosecutors say doctors performed surgery on the puppy to save her broken right leg.

Officials say the man's home contained 26 English and French bulldog puppies inside a cooler and two cages full of feces.

Police plan to charge the man with third-degree animal cruelty once he is found.

'Okay Cam, Pay Attention': 7-Year-Old Schools Cam Newton

Listen up, Cam Newton, because Reese is only going to say this once.

Seven-year-old Reese took to her dad’s Twitter to explain some routes to Newton, who received criticism after telling a female reporter it was “funny” to hear her talking about routes.

“This is a corner route,” Reese started, holding a picture of what the route looks like. “This is a slant route. This is a post, up and over.”

Newton made the controversial comment to female reporter Jourdan Rodrigue and has since apologized in a video.

Reese’s dad, Eric, says he posted the video of his daughter to prove females can understand football routes, adding that it annoys him when people discount female knowledge of the game. Eric, an Eagles season ticket holder, said he even learned the game from his mom.

Reese, donning an Eagles jersey, left off with one more message for Newton: “If you forget any of these, the Eagles are going to show you on Thursday night football.”
