Philly Radio Host Loses Gig For Quips About Female Announcer

A Philadelphia sports radio personality says he lost a weekly television gig after saying a female announcer calling an NFL game "sounds unnatural."

Mike Missanelli said on his radio show on ESPN's The Fanatic 97.5 FM that he was fired from "Sports Sunday" on WPVI, Philadelphia's ABC station.

He says it's because on Tuesday he questioned why ESPN was using Beth Mowins to do play-by-play on ESPN's Monday Night Football double-header.

He says he has no one to blame but himself and calls it a "harsh result."

The firing comes the same week Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton made sexist comments to a female reporter. When a Charlotte newspaper reporter asked Newton about a wide receiver's route running, Newton laughed and said, "it's funny to hear a female talk about routes." He has apologized.

A 16-year-old wunderkind gymnast who lives in New Castle County, Delaware, pulled off an upset Friday night to win the all-around women's gymnastics gold medal at the 2017 world championships.

Morgan Hurd, who lives in Middletown with her mother, glowed with a smile that stretched from ear-to-ear after the win in Montreal, Canada. Her score of 55.232 in the four disciplines of vault, balance beam, floor exercise and uneven bars narrowly beat Ellie Black, of Canada, who posted a 55.132, and Elena Eremina, of Russia, who posted a 54.799, according to U.S.A. Gymnastics.

Watch her championship-winning performance now on NBC10. Here's a link to the competition currently being broadcast.

“It’s crazy that I was even competing here and to win is the most surreal feeling in the world,” Hurd said after the medal ceremony. “It honestly means the world for me. I was so humbled to be picked for the team. So to qualify and win the gold means everything to me.”

Hurd is the fifth American in a row to win the all-around title at the annual world championships.

While thanking her family and friends on Instagram, she remained focused on one more competition this weekend. She is competing in the balance beam final Sunday.

The teenager was born in China and adopted when she was three by Sherri Hurd, who raised Morgan in the mom's home state of Delaware.

The Olympic hopeful is a member of First State Gymnastics, based in Newark, Delaware.

The search for a missing elderly woman ended in tragedy Saturday. Martha Hesse, 79, was found dead around 10:45 a.m. in a wooded area within the Holiday City Senior Community in Toms River, New Jersey.

Hesse’s body was discovered by volunteer members of the Toms River Fire Companies near the western end of Yorktown Boulevard. She was first reported missing by her husband Thursday night. The husband told investigators Hesse had driven her car from her Mt. Fairweather Lane home to an unknown location. Her car was found later that evening near the community lake.

At this time, police don’t believe foul play was involved in Hesse’s death though they continue to investigate. An autopsy will be conducted to determine a cause of death.

Police are asking anyone who saw or interacted with Hesse on Thursday or Friday to call Detective Petrick at 732-349-1050 extension 1235 or email him at rpetrick@trpolice.org.

Gunman Shoots Popular Store Owner During Attempted Robbery

A store owner and staple of a Philadelphia community is in the hospital after she was shot during an attempted robbery Friday night in the Mantua section of the city.

The shooting occurred around 9 p.m. at the Freddy Grocery on the 3400 block of Fairmount Avenue. The 48-year-old owner of the store, known affectionately as “Mama” by community members and customers, was preparing to close when a gunman entered. Police say the suspect demanded money before opening fire.

“It looks like she’s compliant from what we can tell by the scene,” Philadelphia Police Lieutenant John Walker said. “Instead of taking the money and leaving, he fires a shot and devastates a family.”

The woman was shot once in the left side of her neck and once in the back. The gunman then fled the scene.

Sandi Smith, a neighbor and former paramedic, told NBC10 she heard another woman screaming for help shortly after the shooting.

“As I was walking up my steps she came out screaming, ‘she’s bleeding!’ So I yelled, ‘Who’s bleeding?’ When she said mama in the store is bleeding, I threw my dog into the house and ran into the store,” Smith said.

When Smith went inside she found “Mama” on the floor, bleeding out from her neck.

“That’s when she was moaning and moved her head,” Smith said. “That’s when I saw the bullet hole. It was spurting blood. There was this pool of blood on her chest, down her legs and covering the floor.”

Smith applied pressure to the wound on the store owner's neck while calling 911.

"All I could do is apply direct pressure, scream for a towel and with my other hand I called 911," Smith said.

The owner was taken to the hospital where she is in stable condition.

Police haven’t released a detailed description of the gunman but say he was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.

“We think this is someone from the area that goes in there and thinks they’ll have an easy time getting money at the end of the night,” Lieutenant Walker said.

Neighbors told NBC10 “Mama” is a longtime fixture in Mantua who’s owned the store for years and always helps people out with food when they need it.

“If she didn’t’ have it in her register, if she didn’t have it in the store, she would take it out of her pocket and give it to you,” Smith said. “This is ugly. This is ignorant. This is unnecessary.”

If you have any information on the shooting, please call Philadelphia Police.
