A police officer responding to a call Saturday night in North Philadelphia saw a "red laser dot" on his shirt and moments later, he and his partner were under fire, according to a police department spokesman.

Neither officer was struck in the gunfire that broke out at 13th and York streets shortly after 10 p.m., and they apparently did not strike two possible gunmen as they fled, police said.

The officer who noticed the red dot on his shirt discharged six shots in their direction after he and his partner fell to the ground when they heard the gunshots, police said.

Both suspected gunmen fled west on York Street, and a firearm magazine containing six .38-caliber cartridges was recovered in a driveway in the 2300 block of North 13th Street, police said.

The incident occurred as the officers were standing on the passenger side of a vehicle parking in the 2300 block. The officers were talking with a person inside the car who had called about the theft of his cell phone.

The details, according to police spokesman Capt. Sekou Kinebrew, are from an investigation still in "the early stages."

Pilot Choked by Seat Belt in Plane Crash Into Montco Yard

A pilot had to be cut from the wreckage of a home-built aircraft after the plane crashed into the front yard of a Whitpain Township, Pennsylvania home Sunday afternoon, officials and witnesses said.

The single engine VariEze style plane went down just after 5 p.m. along Meade Road, police said.

Witnesses and police said the plane lost altitude shortly after takeoff and hit several trees before breaking apart on the front lawn of a home.

A pair of neighbors — Douglas DiSandro and Brian McShain — rushed to the wreckage and started searching for the pilot.

"I heard gurgling in a bush and we found where the pilot was," neighbor DiSandro said.

When they got into the bush, they found the pilot being choked by the plane's seat belt. The men lifted his body to relive the pressure on his neck until another person brought scissors to cut him free.

"He relieved the pressure on his neck and he started gasping again," DiSando said.

Paramedics took the pilot, who has not yet been identified, to Penn Presbyterian Trauma Center in Philadelphia. Police said his injuries didn't appear to be life-threatening, but a condition was not available.

The development where the crash happened is 1½ miles from Wings Field — a small airport where the plane took off from this afternoon.

Wreckage is strewn across the lawn and garden of 25 Meade Road. It appears the house was spared from being hit. There was a person inside the home when the crash happened.

"We're very fortunate that nobody got hurt on this scene. It's amazing," Whitpain Twp. Police Chief Kenneth Lawson said.

VariEze aircraft debuted in the 1970s and are a cheaper alternative to other popular small aircraft like Cessna or Piper, according to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. The planes are typically made of composite foam and fiberglass, the museum said.

The National Transportation Safety Board will visit the crash site Monday to launch an investigation.

Motorcyclist Dies in NJ School Bus Crash Collision

A man died early Monday when his motorcycle collided with a school bus transporting elementary students to a South Jersey school, police said.

The vehicles collided around 8 a.m. at South Church Street near Country Lane in Mount Laurel leaving the unidentified male biker dead at the scene, Mount Laurel police said.

The Mount Laurel School District bus, which typically carries 34 students ranging from kindergarten to fourth grade, was midway through its route to Countryside Elementary School when the crash occurred, superintendent George Rafferty told NBC10.

None of the children on board the yellow bus at the time of the crash were observed to have suffered any visible injuries, Rafferty and police said.

Another bus was dispatched to the scene to pick up the children and take them to school where extra counselors and school nurses were on hand to examine the students, Rafferty said.

A robo call went out to parents and guardians of the children on board, Rafferty said. The district planned to later send a note to the greater school community.

The crash delayed traffic in the area during the morning rush as police investigated the wreck.

The district said it would allow police to investigate the crash before making any further statements. School district officials are expected to also interview the bus driver involved, per normal protocol.

The cause of the wreck remained under investigation Monday afternoon.

Armed, Dangerous: Reward for Suspect in Montco Mom Shooting

        $
        0
        0

Armed and dangerous: That's how authorities describe the man wanted for shooting a mother who answered the door at his ex-girlfriend's house.

The Montgomery County District Attorney hopes a wanted poster announcing a $1,000 reward helps lead investigators to Greg Feldman. The Harleysville man is wanted for shooting Amy Hermann at her Limerick home so that the 48-year-old's daughter could feel Feldman's "pain."

        [[447706053, L,308,400]]

Amy Hermann, 48, told detectives she was speaking with her daughter, Rebecca, when Feldman came to the door of their home along Long Meadow Road around noon Friday, according to court documents.

He asked to see Rebecca and when the mother refused, Feldman said "I have something for Becca" before allegedly pulling out a long-barreled handgun and firing two shots, authorities said.

Bullets struck Amy Hermann in the chest and neck. She told detectives Feldman tried to fire additional shots, but the gun jammed, the court documents said. He then dropped his bag, grabbed the victim's cell phone and left.

The mother was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was able to speak with detectives about what happened. She is recovering and is expected to survive, investigators said.

The gunman fled the area immediately after and remained on the run Monday. Feldman could be operating a 216 black Mazda sedan with license plate KFC 4605, investigators said.

Rebecca Hermann told police she spoke to Feldman in a call to her mother's phone after the shooting.

Feldman allegedly told her "I wanted you to feel my pain," according to the criminal complaint.

        [[238427591, C]]

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele said Feldman is believed to be armed and is dangerous as he remains on the run. He has red hair and a light complexion.

Feldman has made no contact with family or friends. Investigators believe he likely left the Limerick area so they shared the flyer with neighboring police agencies, Limerick police said.

Officials are asking the public to keep their eyes peeled for him. They caution, however, not to confront him, but to immediately call 911. Tips on his whereabouts can also be called into Montgomery County detectives, 610-278-3368 and Limerick Township police, 610-495-7909.

While a fugitive on the run, Feldman was already hit with 11 charges including attempted murder, aggravated assault, robbery and burglary.
