Police ID Pilot Who Survived Plane Crash in Montco Yard

Police identified a pilot who was saved by neighbors after his home-built aircraft crashed into the front yard of a Whitpain Township, Pennsylvania home Sunday afternoon.

Phillip David Beckner Jr., 29, of Crofton, Maryland, was flying his single-engine VariEze-style plane when the aircraft went down just after 5 p.m. along Meade Road, police said.

Beckner had landed at Wings Field, a small airport, earlier in the day to visit friends in the area. After departing from Wings Field later in the day, his plane crashed about a mile from the runway in the Broad Axe Village section of Whitpain Township.

Witnesses and police said the plane lost altitude shortly after takeoff and hit several trees before breaking apart on the front lawn of a home.

A pair of neighbors — Douglas DiSandro and Brian McShain — rushed to the wreckage and started searching for Beckner.

"I heard gurgling in a bush and we found where the pilot was," DiSandro said.

When they got into the bush, they found Beckner being choked by the plane's seat belt. The men lifted his body to relieve the pressure on his neck until another person brought scissors to cut him free.

"He relieved the pressure on his neck and he started gasping again," DiSandro said.

Paramedics took Beckner to Penn Presbyterian Trauma Center in Philadelphia where he remained Monday. Police said his injuries didn't appear to be life-threatening, but a condition was not available.

Wreckage was strewn across the lawn and garden of 25 Meade Road. It appears the house was spared from being hit. There was a person inside the home when the crash happened.

"We're very fortunate that nobody got hurt on this scene. It's amazing," Whitpain Twp. Police Chief Kenneth Lawson said.

VariEze aircraft debuted in the 1970s and are a cheaper alternative to other popular small aircraft like Cessna or Piper, according to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. The planes are typically made of composite foam and fiberglass, the museum said.

The Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board and Whitpain Twp. Police are all investigating the crash.

Man Pleads Guilty to Punching Person With Cerebral Palsy

A man who was caught on video mocking and sucker-punching a person with cerebral palsy outside a West Chester, Pennsylvania 7-Eleven store in May pleaded guilty to simple assault.

Barry Robert Baker, 29, of Georgetown, Delaware entered his plea Monday. Baker's attorney said his client is sorry for what happened and wants to move on with his life.

A sentencing date has not been set.

Baker, who previously lived in Coatesville but now lives in Georgetown, Delaware, was with his friends at a 7-Eleven store on 200 South High Street in West Chester back on May 10 around 2:30 a.m. At the same time a 22-year-old man with cerebral palsy drove into the parking lot of the store and parked his vehicle. As he got out and went into the 7-Eleven, Baker began making fun of him and mocking how he walked. When the victim got back out of the store, Baker mocked him again and began to imitate how he moved.

As the victim stood in front of his vehicle, Baker sucker-punched him in the face. He then fled around the corner of the store. The entire ordeal was captured on surveillance video.

"The defendant’s actions in this case are appalling," West Chester Police Chief Scott Bohn said. "You wonder what would make an individual treat somebody like that."

The victim called police and Baker was later charged with simple assault and other related offenses. Officials say he disappeared however after he was freed on $25,000 bail.

On May 22, Hogan announced active bench warrants for Baker for violating parole and failing to appear for a separate domestic relations matter.

A $5,000 reward for Baker's arrest was announced. Police later tracked Baker to a hotel in Uwchlan Township on June 5 where they took him into custody without incident.

Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan said others helped Baker while he was on the run. Baker's fiancée Denise Schmidt was arrested on June 27 for allegedly hindering his apprehension when he first went missing after being released on bail. Police also say she paid for Baker's hotel and a pre-paid phone.

Baker's father, Barry Baker Sr., was also arrested on June 27 as a result of a countywide drug bust operation in Chester County dubbed "Operation Wildfire."

During the eight-week operation, multiple law enforcement agencies arrested alleged heroin, OxyContin, Percocet, Vicodin, morphine, MDMA, diazepam, Xanax, crack cocaine and crystal methamphetamine dealers in every region of Chester County. Officials say Baker Sr. sold morphine.

“So while his son was beating up a man with a disability, Barry Baker Sr. was selling us morphine,” Hogan said. “It’s a heck of a family.”

Man Accused of Shooting Ex-Girlfriend's Mom Found Dead: DA

A man accused of shooting the mother of his ex-girlfriend in Montgomery County was found dead Monday night, according to Chester County District Attorney Thomas Hogan.

Hogan confirmed with NBC10 late Monday night that Gregory Feldman, 30, was found dead. He did not confirm an exact cause of death or the exact location where he was found.

A $1,000 reward was announced Monday for information leading to Feldman. The Harleysville man was accused of shooting Amy Hermann at her Limerick home so that the 48-year-old's daughter could feel Feldman's "pain."

Amy Hermann, 48, told detectives she was speaking with her daughter, Rebecca, when Feldman came to the door of their home along Long Meadow Road around noon Friday, according to court documents.

He asked to see Rebecca and when the mother refused, Feldman said "I have something for Becca" before allegedly pulling out a long-barreled handgun and firing two shots, authorities said.

Rebecca Hermann told police she spoke to Feldman in a call to her mother's phone after the shooting. Feldman allegedly told her "I wanted you to feel my pain," according to the criminal complaint.

Bullets struck Amy Hermann in the chest and neck. She told detectives Feldman tried to fire additional shots, but the gun jammed, the court documents said. He then dropped his bag, grabbed the victim's cell phone and left.

The mother was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was able to speak with detectives about what happened. She is recovering and is expected to survive, investigators said.

The gunman fled the area immediately after and remained on the run before he was found dead Monday night.

List of Road Closures in Our Area This Week

$
0
0

Make sure to add some traffic time into your schedule this week. Many major roads will condense lanes or be closed due to construction.

Here's some traffic information for you to plan out your week:

I-76: Starting Monday, September 25 to Thursday, September 28, from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., westbound I-76 approaching 30th Street will go down to one lane and eventually close from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. This is due to PennDOT's $103.6 million project renovating the Chestnut Street Bridge over the Schuylkill River and several over surrounding areas.

Drivers are advised to avoid I-76 during construction times as delays and backups are anticipated. During the overnight closure, a detour will take motorists to the off-ramp to 30th Street (Exit 345) and north onto Schuylkill Avenue to the westbound on-ramp near Market Street.

Interstate 95 north will be a designated detour for drivers heading towards 676 from the Walt Whitman Bridge. The detour is 95 north to I-676 west, back to I-76 west. Drivers can also take I-676 west from New Jersey to the Benjamin Franklin Bridge back to I-76 west.

I-476: I-476 will be closed between Lehigh Valley and Mahoning Valley. The detour exits will be Lehigh Valley Interchange (exit #56) for northbound traffic and Pocono Valley Interchange (exit #95) for southbound. The detour routes for drivers include Route 22. Route 33, and Interstate 80.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission announced earlier this month that the construction would span over one weekend instead of the usual year or more. The 55-hour closure is due to the construction of a bridge in South Whitehall Township over Crackersport Road.

I-95: There will be bridge inspections on I-95 Girard Point Bridge and Tacony Street. There will be multiple closures throughout the week.

Wednesday, September 27, lanes closures will be in affect from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m between Bridge Street and Levick Street.

Saturday, September 30 and Sunday, October 1, the right lane will be close on the northbound and southbound of I-95 Girard Point Bridge from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

This is part of PennDOT's program to regularly inspect bridges every two years to check safety and structural condition.

        AROUND THE WORLD

Simpson's Release Date May Be Delayed: OJ Simpson will be eligible for parole from prison in Nevada Sunday, but that may be delayed if a required release plan is not completed and approved by then. When Simpson was found suitable for release in July, he told the parole panel that he intended to move back to Florida, where he had lived after leaving Los Angeles and before his 2007 arrest in Las Vegas. He has served nine years at the remote Lovelock prison, two hours outside of Reno. The Florida Department of Corrections, however, has yet to receive a transfer request for Simpson, officials said. Transfer of parole jurisdiction is routinely approved. But under the terms of the governing Interstate Compact, the review process can take up to 45 days. Under the procedure in Nevada, the inmate collaborates with a case worker to develop the plan for release supervision, which is then sent to a "pre-release specialist," according to Capt. Shawn Arruti of the Nevada Division of Parole and Probation.
