You'll Soon Be Able to Park on the Sand at this NJ Beach

Forget lugging all those beach chairs, umbrellas and shovels for blocks and blocks to the beach if you own an SUV and sun in Wildwood, New Jersey.

The seaside resort just approved an ordinance to allow drivers to park directly on the sand in a new beach lot the city is creating.

The lot will be at the E. Baker Avenue beach, which is between the Wildwoods Convention Center and Morey's Adventure Pier.

Parking will be limited to drivers who own a vehicle with four-wheel drive. Daily rates will run $10. The price will jump to $20 for special events, the city said. The lot will be monitored by an attendant.

The resort's beaches are extra long compared to other towns leaving visitors to take long treks from the street to the shore. The change should cut down on some walking. City officials also say it will generate revenue.

Wildwood isn't the first south Jersey Shore town to permit beach parking. Brigantine started offering sand lot parking in 2007.

Brother Dies in Cliff Fall at New Jersey Park

A man has lost his brother after a morning bike ride ended in a fatal fall down a cliff in New Jersey.

Essex County officials said two brothers were mountain biking on a trail within a 157 acre county park in New Jersey Monday morning when one accidentally rode off a cliff, falling at least 20 feet into a ravine.

A woman who lives near the Mills Reservation, Debbie Cocoziello, said she was startled awake by someone screaming for help. The man screaming for help turned out to be the brother of the 49-year-old victim.

Authorities were seen hauling a stretcher covered in a white sheet from a ravine at Mills Reservation in Cedar Grove at 11:30 a.m., about two hours after the initial report came in about the fall.

The reservation has a number of hiking trails, including one that leads to a cliff overlooking the New York City skyline. It is maintained by the Essex County Park Commission.

Biking isn't allowed on the trails at the Mills Reservation, but neighbors say people do it anyway. One man was seen being turned away by police when he tried to pedal in just two hours after the accident.

"It's a ravine, it's not meant for something like that but the kids do it," said a neighbor named Caroline.

Other neighbors who live along the Cedar Grove-Upper Montclair border say they've worried about the park cliffs for years. There's no fence there, just a sheer drop.

Eddie Kloss says he never takes his three young children near the cliff: "It's too dangerous, there's no fence or anything."

The exact circumstances surrounding the fall remain under investigation, although authorities have called it an accident.

Finding a summer parking spot turned violent Tuesday in Rehoboth Beach, police said.

Police arrested 20 year-old Nakala Spencer after she allegedly assaulted another woman over a disputed parking space on the first block of Rehoboth Avenue in Delaware Tuesday.

Spencer was attempting to save a parking space by standing in the vacant area around 6:30 p.m., according to investigators.

When a 51 year-old woman, who police have not identified, pulled into the parking space, Spencer allegedly refused to move. Spencer then punched the victim in the face twice and threw her phone to the ground, police said.

Spencer fled the scene, but was quickly caught by the authorities and taken into custody. She was charged with two misdemeanor crimes, offensive touching and disorderly conduct and was released on $1,000 bail.

Rehoboth Beach Police reiterate that saving a parking space as a pedestrian for vehicles is prohibited by city ordinance.

Man Wakes Up to Gunman Killing His Daughter in Farmhouse

An investigation is underway after a man woke up to the sound of his daughter being shot to death inside their farmhouse in Winslow Township, New Jersey.

Winslow Township Police responded to a report of gunshots inside a farmhouse on the 700 block of Bairdmore Avenue around 3:50 a.m. Sunday. In a 911 call obtained by NBC10, the father of Deanna Marie Scordo, 45, told the dispatcher two men wearing black hoods broke into the home, shot his daughter, and left her in a corner.

“My daughter is laying on the floor,” he told the dispatcher.

“And she’s shot?” the dispatcher asked.

“Yes,” he replied.

When police arrived at the home they found Scordo on the floor suffering from gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

“I just seen Deanna oh about three weeks ago and she waved to me in the morning and I hope they catch the perpetrators,” Jr. Raso, a family friend, told NBC10.

The stretch of Bairdmore Avenue where Scordo lived is known for its blueberry crop. Residents fear robbery was the motive behind the shooting though police have not yet confirmed this.

“She didn’t deserve to die for a lousy four to five thousand dollars,” Raso said. “I mean that’s senseless.”

No arrests have been made in the shooting. If you have any information, please call Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Chris Sarson at (856) 225-8640 or Winslow Township Police Detective Nick Arnold at (609) 561-3300. You can also email ccpotips@ccprosecutor.org.

“Get this solved because we don’t need this kind of stuff in our community,” Raso said. “We’ve got a good community here.”

Woman Killed in Savage Stabbing and Beating Identified: Philadelphia police have identified a woman who was killed after being brutally beaten and stabbed outside a North Philadelphia high school Saturday morning. Debra Gulliver, 33, of the 2500 block of N. 25th Street, suffered more than a dozen stab wounds to her stomach, police said Monday. She was also beaten severely in the head. "She was just dressed in flip flops and a tank top and a pocket book and a pony tail going home and never made it," Gulliver's mother Nancy Celia told NBC10. "Whoever was there at that point in time, she put up a fight for darn sure." Gulliver was partially clothed when a passerby, who had just been robbed by two men, found her in a park attached to Dobbins Technical High School near 21st Street and Lehigh Avenue, police said. Police are unsure of the motive but say nothing was stolen from Gulliver during the attack. They also have not yet determined whether or not she was sexually assaulted. Police did not have a description of a suspect available Monday. Officials said they received 911 calls from witnesses who left the scene before officers arrived.

Trump Travel Ban Partly Reinstated: The Supreme Court is allowing President Donald Trump to forge ahead with a limited version of his ban on travel from six mostly Muslim countries to the U.S. Trump hailed the decision as a "victory for national security," but it's likely to set off a new round of court disputes over anti-terror efforts and religious discrimination. The justices will hear full arguments in October in the case that has stirred heated emotions across the nation and pointed rebukes from lower courts saying the administration is targeting Muslims. Until then, the court said Monday, Trump's ban on visitors from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen can be enforced if those visitors lack a "credible claim of a bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the United States.” The ruling sets up a potential clash between the government and opponents of the ban over the strength of visitors' ties to the United States. A senior official said plans already had been written to enforce the ban aggressively. But immigrant groups said relatively few people try to enter the United States without well-established ties. Those groups said they will be sending lawyers and monitors back to American airports, where the initial, immediate implementation of the ban in January caused chaos and confusion.

Police: Girls Own Actions Caused Her to Fall from Six Flags Ride: Authorities say a 14-year-old Delaware girl's actions caused her to fall from a New York amusement park ride and land in the arms of bystanders. Warren County sheriff's Lt. Steven Stockdale tells The Post-Star of Glens Falls that "human error" on the part of the teen caused her to slip under a metal restraining bar on the Sky Ride gondola while riding with her brother Saturday at Six Flags Great Escape. The girl dangled briefly while her brother held her. The ride was stopped, and she dropped about 25 feet into a crowd poised to catch her. The girl was taken to an Albany hospital for unspecified injuries. Police say the ride was functioning properly.

46 Alleged Drug Dealers Busted in 'Operation Wildfire'

      0
      0

A countywide drug bust operation in Chester County culminated in the arrests of 46 people over the last two months, District Attorney Thomas Hogan said Tuesday.

Dubbed "Operation Wildfire," the large-scale investigation "took place in every region of Chester County," the DA's office said in a statement.

Undercover cops and cooperatives bought heroin, Oxycontin, Percocet, Vicodin, morphine, MDMA, diazepam, and Xanax, as well as crack cocaine and crystal methamphetamine. Hogan said 46 alleged drug dealers have been arrested or will be.

More than 1,600 people died from overdoses in 2016 in the five-county region of southeastern Pennsylvania: 900 in Philadelphia, 253 in Montgomery County, 227 in Delaware County, 185 in Bucks County and 97 in Chester County, according to the DA's office. The death toll from opioids in all of Pennsylvania continued a steep climb last year despite growing awareness of drug addiction.

More than 4,600 people died across the state, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration, a 37-percent increase from 2015.

"It was dubbed Operation Wildfire because everyone knows heroin and opioids are ripping through Pennsylvania and the United States like wildfire," Hogan said in an interview. "We unleashed all these detectives and drug cops to do nothing but go after these drugs."

Chester County is fortunate enough to be able to fund such a sweeping and collaborative investigation on its own, he said, but other counties aren't able to and need help.

"Let's face it, most counties in Pennsylvania do not," Hogan said. "You go to the poorer counties, they need help. They need help from the federal prosecutor's offices."

Some of the alleged dealers have already had hearings while others have yet to be arrested, but Hogan said they are being taken into custody as soon as possible.

The total amount of drugs confiscated has yet to be tallied. They have been sent to a laboratory to be tested, Hogan said.
