Man, Woman Who Died in Apparent Murder-Suicide Identified

Authorities released the names of a couple found dead in an apparent murder-suicide Saturday after barricading themselves in a home following a chase during which a police officer was fired upon, officials said.

Eric Messick, 33, of Walnutport, and Emily Fatzinger, 25, of Greene Township in Pike County, were pronounced dead Saturday night in the Upper Saucon Township home, the Lehigh County coroner's office said. Autopsies were planned Monday.

"It ended with an apparent murder-suicide,'' District Attorney Jim Martin said at a news conference late Saturday night. ``One suspect shot the other, then killed himself.''

Township police had tried to stop them on Route 309 shortly before noon Saturday on outstanding warrants, but rather than stop, the couple turned into a nearby development and abandoned the vehicle after they got stuck in construction, authorities said.

The man fired at a pursuing officer, and the officer stopped chasing them as they ran through an open cornfield, police said. The two reportedly went to a home in the area and demanded car keys from one person, then fled.

Edward Petro told The (Allentown) Morning Call that he saw a shadow cut across his wall, then a second shadow.

"I'm waiting for them to ring the doorbell but the doorbell doesn't ring,'' he said. ``The guy comes in with a gun in his hand _ not in his waistband, in his hand. And I just stood in my tracks.''

He said the man demanded his car keys, and he quickly came up with a story that his mechanic was in the process of fixing the car and still had the keys.

"He was in a hurry,'' Petro said of the gunman, who several times asked for the car keys. ``I kept telling him I don't have the keys.''

Either before or after that, the pair went to a home where a woman was sitting on her porch with her dog and again demanded car keys, then entered as the woman and her dog fled to a nearby neighbor's home and took her cellphone.

Eventually they went to an unoccupied home, and police searching the neighborhood approached after hearing three gunshots inside the house. Police used a bomb robot and eight rounds of tear gas before entering to find the couple dead in the attic.

Some residents were evacuated to the nearby Wedgewood Golf Course while others were urged to stay indoors and lock their homes as police swarmed the area, some in armored vehicles, as a helicopter searched overheard.

A woman who recruited a 16-year-old runaway to be a prostitute and solicited clients on a website that advertises escort services is now headed to prison.

The state Attorney General's Office says Barbara Cantz received a five-year sentence on Friday. The 23-year-old Westville woman had pleaded guilty in March to conspiracy to facilitate human trafficking.

Authorities say Cantz met the teen in early 2016 and invited her to move in to Cantz's Cherry Hill motel room. They say Cantz was a prostitute and encouraged the teen to engage in prostitution.

Authorities say Cantz told the girl to place ads for herself on websites and arranged for them to meet clients. Cantz also told the girl to advertise the two of them together so that they could make more money.

Officers had to jump to safety after a driver sped through a crime scene in Philadelphia's Kensington section early Monday.

Police were investigating a carjacking at Erie Avenue and I Street around 3 a.m. Monday when a black Nissan sped down the street at an estimated 60 mph, Capt. Drew Techner told NBC10.

Techner said the officers had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit. Several police bicycles were struck by the Nissan and were left bent and broken.

The officers did have their police lights on while investigating the carjacking.

The driver of the Nissan sped away after zooming through. Police are now reviewing surveillance video to try and track him down.

While no one was hurt in the hit and run, an officer broke his wrist while arresting two suspects in the carjacking.

Philadelphia police have identified a woman who was killed after being brutally beaten and stabbed outside a North Philadelphia high school Saturday morning.

Debra Gulliver, 33, of the 2500 block of N. 25th Street, suffered more than a dozen stab wounds to her stomach, police said Monday. She was also beaten severely in the head.

"She was just dressed in flip flops and a tank top and a pocket book and a pony tail going home and never made it," Gulliver's mother Nancy Celia told NBC10. "Whoever was there at that point in time, she put up a fight for darn sure."

Gulliver was partially clothed when a passerby, who had just been robbed by two men, found her in a park attached to Dobbins Technical High School near 21st Street and Lehigh Avenue, police said.

“This was a very brutal, savage attack. Somebody really wanted to make sure that she suffered and was killed," Capt. Drew Techner told NBC10 on Saturday.

Police are unsure of the motive but say nothing was stolen from Gulliver during the attack. They also have not yet determined whether or not she was sexually assaulted.

Police did not have a description of a suspect available Monday. Officials said they received 911 calls from witnesses who left the scene before officers arrived.

"We need to talk to them," Philadelphia Police Captain James Clark said. "If they see this, we need them to reach out to us and come in. They were in the park during the time, probably of the murder, or shortly thereafter so we need to talk to them as well."

Homicide detectives are investigating. If you have any information on the stabbing, please call 911.
