Coroner Hopes Tattoos Will Help ID Dead Man in Basement

Authorities in Allentown don't know who a man found dead in a basement in the city early Monday morning is, and they're hoping the public may be able to help identify him based on a description of his tattoos.

The man, estimated to be between 30 and 50 years old, was found dead in the basement of a building at 202 N. 8th St., in Allentown, early Monday, according to the Lehigh County Coroner. He was officially pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m. The Coroner's Office will perform an autopsy Tuesday to determine the man's cause of death, which was unclear, officials said.

Coroner's Office officials said the man did not have any identification on him, so they're asking the public for help figuring out who he is. They described him as being either Caucasian or a Hispanic man with a light complexion and said he weighs about 250 pounds and is 5 feet 10 to 5 feet 11. He has dark hair.

They said the man has several tattoos, including a tribal tattoo of barbed wire on his left bicep, a skull and jester tattoo on his lower left arm, a "thug life" tattoo on his chest, a "Dame Chacha" tattoo with lips and a tongue design on his lower left abdomen, a "thug life" tattoo on his left calf, and a red rose tattoo with script reading "Carmen and Joselito" on his right calf.

Officials asked that anyone with information on the man's identity call the Lehigh County Coroner at 610-782-3426.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this article listed the location the man's body was found as 202 N. 6th St. in Allentown based on initial information released by the Lehigh County Coroner. The Coroner's Office has since updated that information to correct the address to 202 N. 8th St.

Hermine Makes Westerly Turn Far Off Coast

Hermine on Monday made the westerly turn forecast in earlier models -- but the turn came late enough that our region will continue to feel only minor effects.

The main concerns related to Hermine for the Jersey Shore and Delaware beaches continue to be minor threats of coastal flooding at high tide, winds along the shore and a high threat of rip currents in the ocean, NBC10 meteorologist Krystal Klei said. The most serious issue, the rip currents caused by the storm churning out at sea, has led to a number of beaches being closed for swimming during the Labor Day holiday.

Klei said Hermine's latest track, updated by the National Hurricane Center at 11 a.m. Monday, shows the storm poses a bigger threat now for parts of Long Island, Cape Cod, Boston and Providence. Hermine's peak winds still reached about 70 mph -- near hurricane-force -- on Monday as the storm moved northwest at 6 mph.

NBC10's First Alert Weather Team is tracking the possibility of light rain along the shore, but otherwise, the majority of Hermine's impact will likely be felt in the form of clouds and wind.

Further inland, weather will stay pleasant, with temperatures reaching into the 80s Monday.

The Tropical Storm Warning has been discontinued over land while a Coastal Flood Warning is in effect due to the threat of minor and moderate coastal flooding.

"This will continue through midweek until the storm moves farther away," meteorologist Sheena Parveen said.

Young Girl Raises Money for AC Officer Injured in Shooting

A young South Jersey girl is doing her part to help an Atlantic City police officer who continues to recover from a gunshot wound.

Addison Kuppel, 9, of Galloway Township, New Jersey, began selling lemonade to raise money for Officer Joshlee Vadell.

Vadell, a nine-year veteran of the police force, was shot while trying to thwart a robbery in Atlantic City over the weekend. Vadell’s partner returned fire and struck and killed a robbery suspect, according to investigators.

Vadell underwent surgery and his condition was upgraded to stable Monday.
Addison’s mother Sarah Kuppel, of Galloway Township, told NBC10 she recently began working in Atlantic City and talked to her daughter about the shooting. After she asked Addison whether she’d like to donate money to Officer Vadell’s gofundme page, the young girl decided to set up a lemonade stand.

Addison began selling lemonade Monday on Leeds Point Road in Galloway Township. Her first customer was her uncle, Scott Kuppel, a marine and head chef at Oyster Creek Inn Restaurant in Leeds Point. After Kuppel shared photos of his niece selling the lemonade, he caught the attention of the Galloway Township Police Department. Galloway Township officers then showed up at the lemonade stand and posted photos on their Facebook page.

Addison has raised $250 for Officer Vadell so far and the fundraising has just begun. She plans on selling pasta and meatballs Tuesday with her brother Noah at the same location.

AROUND THE WORLD

Obama Cancels Meeting With Philippine President: President Barack Obama called off a planned meeting Tuesday with new Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, seeking distance from a U.S. ally's leader during a diplomatic tour that's put Obama in close quarters with a cast of contentious world figures. It's unusual for one president to tell another what to say or not say, and much rarer to call the other a "son of a bitch." Duterte managed to do both just before flying to Laos for a regional summit, warning Obama not to challenge him over extrajudicial killings in the Philippines. "Clearly, he's a colorful guy," Obama said.

Future Climate Change Field Test Doesn't Make Earth Greener: In the course of a 17-year experiment on more than 1 million plants, scientists put future global warming to a real world test — growing California flowers and grasslands with extra heat, carbon dioxide and nitrogen to mimic a not-so-distant, hotter future. The results, simulating a post-2050 world, aren't pretty. And they contradict those who insist that because plants like carbon dioxide — the main heat-trapping gas spewed by the burning of fossil fuels — climate change isn't so bad, and will result in a greener Earth.

Gunman Kills Driver in Front of Son

A car crashed through a fence and slammed into a building in a New Jersey neighborhood on Monday morning, moments after the driver of the car was killed, according to family and witnesses.

Neighbors and friends say James Kargbo’s young son was a passenger in the car when Kargbo was killed just after 11 a.m. on Labor Day. Kargbo was hit and crashed a short time later, leaving behind a trail of wreckage in North Brunswick’s Somerset Park apartment complex.

The chaotic scene, just feet away from a playground, stunned neighbors and friends.

“I don’t want to live out here anymore. There’s a lot of kids out here in this complex, in this neighborhood,” Suad Rahman, a friend of Kargbo’s said.

Another friend, Bernard George, said the crash happened where his kids wait for the school bus.

“Luckily today is a holiday,” George said. “It could have been the kids waiting for the bus when something like that happens.”

About a quarter mile away from where evidence markers lined the street Monday night, Kargbo’s Saturn sedan had run off the road and careened into a doctor’s office. A short time later, the father of two was pronounced dead.

Somerset County prosecutors declined to confirm the name of the victim or how he was killed, saying only that the office and Franklin Township police were "conducting a homicide investigation in Franklin Township involving a male adult victim."

More information on the case, including how the man was killed, is expected to be released on Tuesday.

Word quickly spread in the neighborhood that Kargbo’s son was a passenger in the car. He witnessed the final moments of his father’s life but luckily survived.

“I don’t know what to say because that is really traumatizing to a child,” Rahman said.

Outside Kargbo’s home on Monday, family and friends gathered throughout the evening. They were still stunned by the Labor Day morning killing of a man they didn’t know to have any enemies.

“When I learned this morning, I actually burst into tears because he’s a good friend,” George said.

Police are searching for the killer, but there's no word of a motive or suspects in the mysterious death.

Editor's note: This story has been corrected to say that family and friends said the driver was killed.

Off-Duty Philly Officer Shoots Son During Argument: Police

$

A fight between an off-duty Philadelphia Police officer and his teenage son led to a shooting that left the son shot and the officer on desk duty, said police.

The ordeal began around 6:30 p.m. inside the unidentified officer's home on the 2700 block of Taunton Street in Northeast Philly. The duo began arguing with each other and the argument soon turned physical, according to investigators.

"Apparently they got into some sort of scuffle, argument or something," said Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross.

The off-duty officer was armed with his personal gun during the fight, according to Philadelphia Police Lt. John Stanford.

"During this altercation his weapon was discharged at least twice, striking one of the individuals inside of the home in the torso area of the body," Stanford said.

The victim was taken to Aria Torresdale Hospital where he is currently in critical but stable condition.

The officer's younger son and the gunshot victim's girlfriend were also in the home at the time, said Ross.

Ross said the officer would remain off the street -- he was already recovering from an injury -- as police investigated what Ross called "a police-involved shooting." As of Tuesday morning no charges were filed.

"There are still a lot of questions that need to be answered," said Ross.

The Internal Affairs Unit can't interview the 15th District officer, a veteran of about 20 years on the force, until the district attorney's office can investigate. Northeast Detectives could interview witnesses, however.

Nicholas Mauro, the officer's neighbor, described him as a good person.

"He's a really good guy," Mauro said. "Nice to talk to. Nice personality. I really didn't think any of this would have happened."
