Car Strikes, Badly Injures Woman on Philly's Deadliest Road

A woman suffered severe injuries when a car struck her as she crossed one of Philadelphia's most dangerous roadways overnight.

Police said the woman was walking across Roosevelt Boulevard near Rising Sun Avenue shortly after midnight when a car in the inner lanes hit her. Medics took the woman to Albert Einstein Medical Center in extremely critical condition. It was unclear whether she would survive.

Police said the driver of the striking vehicle did remain at the scene.

Roosevelt Boulevard has long been known as one of Philadelphia's deadliest roads. Local legislators and advocates recently set their sights on making the Boulevard safer by calling on the state to pass legislation that would allow for speed cameras to be installed along the 12-lane highway's most dangerous stretches.

More than five dozen people died in traffic crashes along the Boulevard between 2011 and last year, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation -- an average of one person a month. In the same span, PennDOT reports that 4,670 people suffered traffic-related injuries on the Boulevard, 159 of which involved pedestrians.

Earlier this year, 17-year-old Markaylah Jackson died as she crossed the Boulevard near Adams Avenue -- not far from the scene of Sunday morning's crash that injured a pedestrian.

The woman injured Sunday has not been identified.

The couple, who has been together for eight years celebrated their engagement on stage.

“This is my girlfriend, Jill," the groom-to-be said after Springsteen handed him the mic. "We've been to a ton of shows together. This is by far the highlight of them all."

They stayed onstage as Springsteen serenaded them to the rest of “Jersey Girl” as they slow-danced and took selfies.

A prominent political family donated money to increase the reward for information on the death of a young girl who was shot and killed in Camden last week.

Officials announced Sunday that philanthropist and Democratic Party leader George E. Norcross contributed $26,000 to the reward for information in the case of 8-year-old Gabby Hill-Carter, bringing the total to $50,000.

Hill-Carter, an 8-year-old who lived in Camden, was shot in the head after being caught in a crossfire, police said.

She died Friday when her family chose to remove her from life support, officials told NBC10. Hill-Carter was in extremely critical condition since Wednesday night when she was caught in the middle of a gang shooting at S. 8th and Spruce streets.

She suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was rushed to Cooper University Trauma Center for treatment.

But Friday afternoon, Hill-Carter's family said their goodbyes to the girl. They sat by her side as she drew her last breath.

[[391351691, C]]

Camden County Police, state prosecutors and federal agents have been searching for four men believed to be involved in the shooting.

Hundreds of loved ones gathered on the same block where the girl was killed Saturday night for a candlelight vigil.

"I love my baby so much and I wish she was still here," said the girl's mother Marissa.

Anyone with information on the shooting should call the Camden tip line at (856) 757-7042 or the Citizen's Crime Commission at (215) 546-TIPS.

"Feel the pain that the family is feeling and then come forward," said Darryl Mack, the girl's uncle. "See the visuals. Hear our voices."

A Berlin, New Jersey woman is asking for the public’s help after thieves stole her family wedding rings from her home.

Police say the theft occurred between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. back on August 19 at Margaret Gibson’s home on Chestnut Avenue.

Gibson told NBC10 the thief or thieves climbed through her second floor window and stole a large amount of jewelry, including her wedding ring, her mother’s wedding ring, her grandmother’s engagement ring and her father’s wedding band.

“Most of it I inherited when my mom passed away in 2005,” Gibson said. “There were hundreds of items. They left me with nothing. Some things were only sterling silver so I’m afraid they were just trashed. Many of my own personal jewelry was given to me by my mom. It’s just heartbreaking.”

Gibson also said the thieves stole two class rings.

“A class ring from the 70s that is a gold Eastern High School class ring with a ruby in the middle,” she said. “There was also a 2005 Overbrook High School class ring with a sapphire in the middle. This had a track and field cleat on it and a soccer ball on the ring.”

Gibson also said some of the stolen jewelry has the letter “M” on it or the name “Margaret” while other items had the letter “P” or the name “Peggy.”

“A necklace in particular was gold and said, ‘Peggy,’” Gibson said.

Berlin Borough Police are currently investigating the theft and are offering a reward for a return of the jewelry or information leading to an arrest. If you have any information on the incident, please contact Detective Sergeant Michael Scheer at 856-357-4229.

New Jersey Monsignor Shares Friendship with Mother Teresa

Spiritual leader, mentor and friend—to a local Monsignor, Blessed Mother Teresa was all of these things. Now, he is on his way to Rome to watch his friend be canonized as a Saint.

“She was humble, holy and she was humorous… and very, very human,” explains Monsignor Michael Mannion of Transfiguration Catholic Church in Collingswood, New Jersey. Monsignor Mannion spent four years living in Calcutta, India and knew Mother Teresa for 28 years.

On Sunday, Monsignor Mannion said his final mass before his pilgrimage to Rome for the canonization ceremony. After mass, he shared the many photos he has of the two together during his time in India and spoke of the miracles attributed to Mother Teresa that helped her achieve sainthood.

“The two official ones, I believe, would be Monica Bosra, the woman from India whose huge tumor was dissolved,” he explained.

Two verified miracles must be had in order to become “Blessed” and canonized as a Saint in the Catholic Church.

“I believe the second miracle was in Brazil," he said. "A man that had numerous brain tumors. For her intercession, I believe those tumors also dissolved.”

Monsignor Mannion was in Vatican City for Mother Teresa’s beatification and on Sunday, he will witness Pope Francis declare her a Saint. He hopes the trip will help him become a better servant.

“How can I take that and pay it forward spiritually so it makes a difference in the life of another," he said. "That’s really what it’s all about.”

Cummings either is or was in a relationship with Williams at one point and she was mentioned in his financial disclosure forms when he reported having received $160,050 in previously undisclosed gifts from 2010 to 2015, according to Philly.com.

Cummings surrendered to police Sunday, according to officials.

Friends and family are mourning a toddler who was struck and killed by a vehicle in West Philadelphia Sunday night.

Police say 23-month-old Ameen was on the 4800 block of Merion Avenue at 6:45 p.m. when he ran in between parked vehicles. He then ran into the street and was struck by a white Chevy Trailblazer that was traveling westbound on Merion Avenue towards 49th Street.

"By the time he ran on the street it was just too late," said John Robinson, the boy's cousin. "The car ran him completely over. I had to come out and get him from up under the car."

Ameen was taken to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia where he was pronounced dead at 7:13 p.m. Police say the striking vehicle remained on scene.

Family members told NBC10 Ameen was visiting his grandmother on Merion Avenue at the time of the accident.

"We call him Scooty," Robinson said. "He's a good little boy. He was just out here playing."

Police say the driver of the vehicle has cooperated with the investigation. They continue to interview her. Police say there is no indication that the driver was speeding at the time of the accident. Residents in the neighborhood told NBC10 they've had issues with heavy traffic and kids playing close to the street.

"The sign right there says 'drive carefully' because there's a lot of children on the block," Robinson said. "But that don't mean nothing. We get a lot of people flying up this block all the time. We've got kids out here. It's dangerous."

International Overdose Awareness Day Sparks Local Events

On August 31, millions of people across the world will remember those who lost their lives to drug overdoses on International Overdose Awareness Day. The many vigils, community programs, and remembrance walks aim to raise awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding drug-related deaths.

Originated in 2001, a local event to hand out ribbons in Australia quickly grew throughout the state and further. Since that time, the official International Overdose Awareness Day website explains, many organizations in the US, UK and Australia have held events to raise awareness and commemorate those who have been lost to drug overdose.

The day spreads the message that overdoses are preventable and acknowledges the grief felt by friends and family remembering those who have died due to drug overdose. This message is not just felt on a global level, but resonates loudly throughout local communities in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.

Many local events are scheduled throughout the day on Wednesday to ignite conversations, pose tribute, and provide resources to those who may be battling, or know someone who is battling addiction. Below is a full list of official registered events across our area.

Along with events throughout the area, NBC10 is re-broadcasting Generation Addicted on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The program follows the five months the NBC10 Digital Team spent investigating the issue of opioid addiction in the Philadelphia region and beyond. Over 80 interviews were conducted to try and uncover the truths around a generation of addicted people and the systems that are ill-equipped to save them.

A water main break sent water gushing onto the busy Roosevelt Boulevard (Route 1) Monday morning.

The break, which happened late Sunday night, closed lanes of the southbound Boulevard after Fox Street and caused traffic to back up all the way up to Wissahickon Avenue as cars snaked past the scene.

As of 6:15 a.m. Monday, the traffic troubles continued with only two lanes getting by as crews worked to clear the scene near Henry Avenue in East Falls.

No word yet on when traffic will flow smoothly again.

10-Car Crash on NJ Turnpike

About 15 people suffered minor injuries after 10 vehicles collided on the New Jersey Turnpike on Sunday night, state police said.

A limousine was among the vehicles that crashed between Roosevelt Avenue and Goethals Bridge, exits 12 and 13, sometime after 11 p.m.

One driver says traffic was backed up on the turnpike because of construction on the Goethals Bridge. He says he was behind a Mercedes when a limo plowed into it and other vehicles.

The Mercedes caught fire, and Janeic says a woman inside it suffered serious injuries. Police couldn't immediately confirm this.

The accident halted traffic in the inner, northbound lanes. A photo posted to Instagram showed people waiting outside of their cars as police responded.

The roadway was being cleared up shortly after 1:15 a.m. and traffic was moving.

It’s still unclear what caused the vehicles to crash.
