Two people were injured and dozens left homeless Sunday night by a fire that tore through a New Jersey apartment building.

The fire started at about 7:30 p.m. at the Carroll Street Apartments in Paterson. More than 100 firefighters battled the blaze and had it contained in about two hours.

Paterson Fire Chief Michael Postorino estimated that 10 to 20 apartments were damaged by the fire, according to The Record newspaper.

Two people were taken to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, he said. Information about their conditions was unavailable.

A Red Cross Disaster Action Team was at the apartment complex to assist at least 11 families find temporary housing, said Diane Concannon, a spokesperson for the organization.

The fire probably started in an apartment and quickly spread to the attic-like space below the building's roof, the chief said.

The affordable-housing complex includes ten buildings. The fire was restricted to one building, which has 16 units.

Shootout Leaves 3 Teens Breaking Curfew Hurt: Police

Curfew questions hung over the shooting of three teenagers in Philadelphia’s Grays Ferry neighborhood overnight.

Gunfire rang out at 27th and Tasker streets just after midnight, said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small early Monday.

"(Police) found three victims -- a 16-year-old male was shot twice in his leg, a 17-year-old male was shot once in his leg and another 16-year-old male was shot once in his lower back," said Small.

Police rushed both boys shot in their legs to Presbyterian Hospital while medics rushed the boy shot in his back to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The boys were listed in stable condition early Monday, said Small.

The shooting appeared to be a shootout between two groups or two people -- one possibly in a older Nissan that sped off from the scene, said Small. Police hoped surveillance cameras could help them track down the shooters.

It was unclear if the boys were innocent victims or involved in the shooting, said investigators. Bullets struck three parked cars as well.

The investigation went beyond the scope of just the shooting.

"They should not have been out this late," said Small. "They're juveniles, they're not adults so therefore they have to adhere to the curfew rules and they should have been in, they should have been home. These curfew rules protect people form not only committing crimes but from being victims of crimes."

Police hope surveillance cameras could help them track down the shooters.

Trial Begins for Owner of Unlicensed Funeral Home

A man accused of running an unlicensed funeral home in West Philadelphia is slated to appear in court Monday for the start of his trial on abuse of corpse charges.

Police arrested Blair Hawkins, 53, of Laurel Springs, NJ, last year after they found three bodies not properly stored in Hawkins Funeral Service, on the 5300 block of Vine Street. One of the bodies was embalmed in a coffin in a non-ventilated room and two others were decomposing, authorities said at the time. Investigators also discovered two unmarked, non-medical bags of human organs inside the building.

Hawkins at the time told NBC10 that the state investigation that found the questionable conditions, sparked by a tip from the public, was all a result of a misunderstanding.

"The bodies, we have paperwork," Hawkins told NBC10. "They're gonna be cremated. They're authorized. We don't refrigerate bodies that are being cremated."

Hawkins faces three counts of abuse of corpse charges. His trial is scheduled to begin Monday morning in Philadelphia court.

Del. Beach Police Defend Arrest of Home Alone Kids' Mom

A mother’s 5-mile trip to pick up dinner while on vacation ended with her being charged with child endangerment.

Rehoboth Beach Police responded over the weekend to criticism over the Aug. 16 incident with 53-year-old Susan Terrillion.

“The arrest of Susan L. Terrillion involved a complex and multifaceted complaint that centered around one important factor; the safety and wellbeing of the children involved,” read a statement from Rehoboth Beach Police. “In this case, as in any other, the primary focus of the police is the protection of human life, especially those who cannot protect themselves.”

Officers arrested the Olney, Maryland woman after someone called police around 7:30 p.m. to report Terrillion’s 9-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter came out of their vacation home along Country Club Drive to chase down their dog. A driver told officers the dog and children ran in front of his car. He then learned the children were home alone after helping them get control of the dog, said police.

Terrillion was gone from the children for about 45 minutes, said police.

“The investigating officer in this case, was called to the scene by a concerned citizen, conducted an investigation, and collected the facts,” said police. “Ms. Terrillion, who returned to the scene prior to the officer’s departure, was not arrested or taken from her children at the time of the incident. Ms. Terrillion was allowed to remain at the residence, with her children, while the officer continued the investigation away from the scene.”

Police would later charge Terrillion with two misdemeanor counts of child endangerment and allow her to surrender to police. She was arraigned and released on $500 bail.

People responded to the police Facebook post about the arrest with comments both supporting and criticizing the department's actions.

"Shame on you for arresting this woman," said Sherry Wright Sthul.

"How dare this mom leave the kids alone," said Lynnette Rittenhouse.

There is no legal age in Delaware for leaving children home alone.

Sussex County prosecutors will decide how to proceed in the case, said police.

Trump Ad Credits Tax Plan He Doesn't Support

Donald Trump's new $10 million TV ad cites two contradictory tax plans — one that Trump has explicitly ruled out and another that he has yet to endorse — raising more questions about what policies the GOP presidential nominee supports, NBC News reports.

Trump's new ad seems generic enough for a Republican politician. In it, he promises lower taxes, more jobs, and growth for small businesses.

But an examination of the fine print supporting the claims provides confusion, not clarity. The ad cites four claims, two from a House Republican proposal similar to one he announced, two from his old tax plan from last year, which had drastically different rates.

So does Trump support the House Republican plan? Does he support his old plan? A spokesman for Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Department of Corrections officials say a man being held at a Sussex County prison on drunken driving charges has died.

Authorities say 54-year-old Lloyd Lindner of Bridgeville arrived at the Sussex Correctional Institution on Saturday. He was taken to a local hospital later that day after falling from a second floor railing.

Officials say state police are investigating the death as an apparent suicide.

DOC spokeswoman Jayme Gravell said Lindner stood on top of a railing before falling head first to the floor below.

It's unclear how Lindner was able to get on top of the railing, but Gravell said prison staff asked him to get down before he fell.

1 Dies, 4 Hurt in Shore Shooting That Leads Victims to Wawa

A man died and four others were hurt in a shooting that led victims to a South Jersey Wawa for help, officials said.

State Police first received calls reporting a shooting along the Atlantic City Expressway near milepost 12 in Egg Harbor Township shortly before 3 p.m. Monday. Around the same time, a bullet-riddled Ford Expedition, missing a rear tire and windows, barreled into the parking lot of the Egg Harbor Township Wawa store along Tilton Road, witnesses said.

Inside, there were four men who pleaded for help from strangers.

"The driver said he was shot," witness Erwin Ashworth told NBC10's Ted Greenberg. "The passenger was hanging from the window... He said everybody was shot at least a couple times."

Bloodied clothes sat crumpled on the ground outside the truck where the victims were treated by medics. They were eventually transported to the Atlantic City Medical Center for treatment.

One person was said to be critically injured and three others suffered minor injuries, according to law enforcement sources.

New Jersey State Police said there was a fifth shooting victim found in a vehicle on the northbound side of the Garden State Parkway near Exit 38. That's about a mile from the Wawa, which is located next to Atlantic City International Airport. Police say a passenger inside the vehicle had been shot in the head and was later pronounced dead. The driver was not injured.

Officials are trying to sort out the details but investigators believe the shooting occurred on the AC Expressway eastbound between milepost 11 and milepost 12. Police also say they don't believe the shooting was a random act and that the people involved likely knew each other. Investigators also found several weapons they believe are connected to the shooting at an unspecified location.

While police have not identified any of the victims of the shooting, they say all of them are men under the age of 40.

Part of the Atlantic City Expressway east was closed due to the investigation and traffic was diverted to Exit 14. It later reopened.

The FBI and the Philadelphia 76ers gave money to increase the reward for information on the death of a young girl who was shot and killed in Camden last week.

Camden County Police announced Monday the reward for information in the case of 8-year-old Gabby Hill-Carter increased to $76,000 after contributions were made by the FBI and the Sixers. The reward had previously increased from $24,000 to $50,000 Sunday after philanthropist and Democratic Party leader George E. Norcross contributed $26,000.

Hill-Carter, an 8-year-old who lived in Camden, was shot in the head after being caught in a crossfire, police said.

She died Friday when her family chose to remove her from life support, officials told NBC10. Hill-Carter was in extremely critical condition since Wednesday night when she was caught in the middle of a gang shooting at S. 8th and Spruce streets.

She suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was rushed to Cooper University Trauma Center for treatment.

But Friday afternoon, Hill-Carter's family said their goodbyes to the girl. They sat by her side as she drew her last breath.

Camden County Police, state prosecutors and federal agents have been searching for four men believed to be involved in the shooting.

Hundreds of loved ones gathered on the same block where the girl was killed Saturday night for a candlelight vigil.

"I love my baby so much and I wish she was still here," said the girl's mother Marissa.

Anyone with information on the shooting should call the Camden tip line at (856) 757-7042 or the Citizen's Crime Commission at (215) 546-TIPS.

"Feel the pain that the family is feeling and then come forward," said Darryl Mack, the girl's uncle. "See the visuals. Hear our voices."

Gasoline Prank in Elevator Leads to Drug Arrest: Police

Police say a prank gone too far led to a drug arrest in Wildwood, New Jersey over the weekend.

On Sunday around 8:30 p.m., police were called to the Isle of Palms Motel at Pine and Atlantic avenues in Wildwood for a report of a person trying to set himself on fire. Police say they received several 911 calls reporting a man inside an elevator had poured gasoline on his body and was trying to ignite the liquid with a lighter.

Police determined the man, identified as 19-year-old Austin Gaile of New York, NY, was performing a prank that he was recording with the intention of sharing it on social media. The liquid he had poured on his body was actually water rather than gasoline, police said. Police also say they found Gaile was in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and he was taken into custody.

Investigators say eight people, including two 3-year-old children, were inside the elevator car with Gaile as he performed the prank. All of the people inside believed the prank was real and several of them were visibly shaken when first responders arrived, police said.

Gaile is charged with false public alarm, endangering the welfare of a child, possession of a controlled dangerous substance/marijuana under 50 grams and possession of controlled dangerous substance paraphernalia. Gaile was unable to post $90,000 full cash bail and was lodged in the Cape May County Correctional Center.

Emaciated Pit Bull 'Rue' Gets Second Chance at Life

An abandoned pit bull is getting a second chance at life after being rescued from the woods in Trenton, New Jersey.

Officer Joe Antonello was on duty last Wednesday when he received a call reporting an animal in the woods on Lamberton Road at Duck Island. There he found a small, brown and white pit bull who could not walk and was barely breathing.

“She definitely didn’t get down there by herself,” explained Antonello. “No question, if I had found her an hour later, she would have died.”

The dog was transported to CARES in Langhorne where staff found plastic lodged in her gums and a screw in her stomach. Veterinarians got right to work to get the dog, whom they named Rue, in tip-top shape. Rue is 2-years-old and when she arrived at CARES, she only weighed 26 pounds. Rue was found to be both anemic and cachectic. She is now receiving fluids, a blood transfusion, antibiotics and is being fed slowly in hopes of avoiding re-feeding syndrome.

Officer Antonello wants to remind people that “this type of crime is considered an indictable offense under New Jersey state law.” Multiple charges could be brought up against the person or persons who left Rue in the woods, including charges for abandoning a sick or injured domestic animal, cruelty and failure to provide sustenance to a living creature, and torturing a living creature.

Staff members at CARES say Rue is a sweet and affectionate dog who gives lots of kisses but is expected to be hospitalized until Tuesday. Then, she will be cared for at home by a CARES nurse.

“Rue has a strong will to get better and she has stolen our hearts,” said CARES Emergency Veterinarian Dr. Morgan Callahan.

Anyone with information on Rue or her owner is asked to contact Trenton Humane Law Enforcement and Animal Services at 609-989-3254.

Two people are in custody and a woman is in the hospital after a police chase that started in Yeadon, Delaware County led to a crash at an AutoZone building in Southwest Philadelphia, according to officials.

Investigators say police tried to pull over a vehicle in Yeadon around 9:15 p.m. Monday but the driver fled the traffic stop, leading to a chase. The driver entered Philadelphia as the chase continued, according to police. He then lost control of his vehicle at 70th Street and Elmwood Avenue, hit a traffic light and then crashed into an AutoZone building, officials said.

Police say a woman who was working inside the AutoZone at the time of the crash was injured but is expected to survive. Two suspects inside the car were arrested though police have not yet revealed their identities.
