Police are investigating a shooting in the Grays Ferry section of the city that left one man dead and another hurt.

Investigators say a fight broke out at the corner of 35th and Wharton Streets shortly after 3 a.m. on Sunday. During the fight, an unidentified gunman opened fire, striking a 28-year-old man several times in the back and torso area.

Police say a 27-year-old man who was outside smoking a cigarette was also struck several times.

Responding police officers drove the 28-year-old man to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he was later pronounced dead.

Investigators say a friend also drove the 27-year-old man to the hospital. He is currently in stable condition.

Police have not yet released a description of the suspect or revealed what led to the fight and shooting. They continue to investigate.

"We're trying to locate some witnesses and put together a crime scene to see what actually happened," said Philadelphia Police Captain Michael Gormley.

Gormley also says police are checking the area for surveillance cameras.

The incident was one of three violent incidents in the city overnight.

A brawl at a house party led to another fatal shooting of a man in the Logan section of the city around 3 a.m. A man was taken into custody in connection to the shooting though he has not been officially charged.

Police also say a 22-year-old man was stabbed several times in the chest inside a home on the 6100 block of Hasbrook Avenue shortly before 6 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No arrests have been made in his murder and police have not released information on any suspects.
