The actions of a police officer in the right place saved a Bucks County man from a fire overnight.

The Warminster Township officer ran up to the home at Newtown and E Bristol roads to find the man unresponsive on the porch around 12:30 a.m. Friday, said investigators.

The unidentified officer began CPR on the man until paramedics arrived to rush the man Abington Memorial hospital.

“I do know he had a pulse when he left here,” said Warminster Fire Chief Mitch Shapiro.

Investigators said the man appeared to be doing OK. They credited the quick-acting first responders with saving the man.

A firefighter suffering from heat exhaustion and a police officer who hurt his hand trying to break a window were also hospitalized.

Fire investigators spent early Friday looking into a possible cause for the blaze, which they believe was accidental and started in the kitchen/living room area.

Surveillance cameras captured a man possibly pulling a knife on a 13-year-old boy waiting for a SEPTA subway.

The theft at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 9 at the Wyoming Station along the Broad Street Line in North Philadelphia netted the crook just $4, said Philadelphia Police.

In surveillance video released by police Thursday, you see the suspect – wearing a dark hoodie and sports pants – entering the station followed by two women. You then see the guy walking along the southbound platform toward the victim – one of the women runs down to try and stop the attack. You then see the suspect continue to pushed around the teenage victim before putting something in his pocket and walking back toward the other side of the platform – but not before appearing to say a few more things to the victim.

The suspect and the two women he was with boarded a southbound train on one end of the platform while the victim got on board on another car, said police.

Investigators described the suspect as being in his late teens to early 20s with a light mustache.

Anyone with information or who recognizes the suspect or his companions is asked to contact Northwest Detective at 215-686-3353 and to call 911 if they see the man involved.

Love Triangle Behind Deadly Double Homicide: DA

0
0

A day after investigators spent hours searching for clues in a double shooting that left two men dead at a Montgomery County apartment building, authorities revealed new details in the deadly home invasion fueled by an overlapping love triangle.

Assistant District Attorney, and District Attorney-elect, Kevin Steele announced Friday the arrest of Obrian Stephen Lewis in the killings of two 26-year-old men late Wednesday night inside the Park Place Apartments on Sandy Street in Norristown.

"The defendant confronted the victims and fired at least 20 shots," said Steele.

Investigators found that "the defendant stood over and fired down onto the victims and those bullets went through the bodies and into the floor below," said Steele.

Police found the body of Marcel Edwards of Philadelphia in a second-floor hallway. Quentin Watson Jr. of Eagleville was found dead in an adjacent apartment, said Steele. Both men were shot multiple times.

"Detectives also found that shots were fired through a door and into the apartment," said Steele.

Steele said Lewis went to the apartment to confront the woman who lives there and one of the victims since it appeared the woman was carrying on relationships with both Edwards and Lewis.

After the killings, Lewis dragged the woman from a closet where she was hiding and dragged her across the room, said Steele. The woman got away, however, and ran down the street where she got someone to call police.

A 4-year-old boy -- who investigators believe is Lewis' son -- in the apartment at the time wasn't hurt, said investigators.

A Norristown officer found the defendant still at the scene and was able to get the still "hot" gun away from Lewis, said Steele.

There appeared to be some previous domestic incidents between Lewis and the woman, said Steele.

Stallone Returns to 'Rocky Steps'

Sylvester Stallone has returned to the Philadelphia steps he made legendary to promote his upcoming installment of the "Rocky" franchise.

Friday morning’s news conference on top of the iconic Philadelphia Museum of Art steps echoes the scene from "Rocky III" where the “Rocky” statue in Stallone’s likeness -- the one that draws thousands of tourists -- was unveiled. This time around there was no Clubber Lang (played by Mr. T) to interrupt the festivities.

"When I started this film I think my voice was squeaky," joked Stallone while referencing the nearly 40 years that have passed since the original "Rocky" made him a superstar.

Joining Stallone at Friday’s event promoting "Creed" were co-stars Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson as well as writer/director Ryan Coogler, producer Irwin Winkler and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter. Nutter honored each with a replica Liberty Bell.

Stallone’s character of Rocky put the steps on the map in 1976 when he climbed the steps during his iconic training montage in the Academy Award-winning "Rocky." The steps have played a role in "Rocky" lore and Philadelphia tourism ever since.

"Creed" — the seventh installment of the "Rocky" franchise — comes out the day before Thanksgiving.

Pilot Pulled from Ocean off NYC Was Navy Vet, Exec

0
0

The pilot pulled from the Atlantic Ocean off Breezy Point in Queens late Wednesday when his small plane crashed into the water was a former Navy captain and an investment company co-founder who was on his way back to New Hampshire from a business meeting in Philadelphia, his business partner says.

James Bradford McGee of Rye, New Hampshire, was the only person aboard the Flight Design GMBH CTLS, a single piston aircraft, when it went down about a mile and a half off Breezy Point at about 7:30 p.m., authorities said.

McGee, known as Brad, was a graduate of the Naval Academy, the Navy Nuclear Power School and Harvard Business School, according to a statement released by his company co-founder and longtime friend John Callaghan.

"Everyone who knew Brad will miss his warmth, integrity and intelligence," said Callaghan. "I have known Brad since we were twelve and have known him as a dedicated friend. I always enjoyed his camaraderie, his wit, and his counsel. In losing Brad, I lose a best friend and a great business partner.”

McGee was a nuclear engineer in the U.S. Navy and then a captain for 17 years in the Naval Reserve. He co-founded iCrowd and New Rye Securities, and before that, held executive positions at accounting consulting firm Seigel & Associates and at Tyco International Ltd., said Callaghan.

He was also an accomplished athlete, participating in marathons and Iron Man competitions.

"Brad was a loving and devoted husband, an insightful and diligent colleague, and a loyal friend to all who knew him," said Callaghan.

Heidi Moats, air safety investigator with the NTSB, said at a news conference earlier Thursday that witnesses reported seeing the aircraft descend into the water.

A fuselage, pieces of fiberglass and a wheel have been recovered from the ocean about a mile and a half off Breezy Point, she said, and authorities were working to recover several more pieces of wreckage, including the engine. The items will then be documented and taken to a secure location.

Moats declined to speculate on any potential causes of the accident.

"At this point, we are looking into the man, the machine and the environment," Moats said.

Small planes like the Flight Design GMBH CTLS don't technically have flight data recorders, said Moats, but they might have memory devices or GPS.

In radio transmissions posted on Broadcastify Wednesday night, a member of the NYPD Special Operations Division is heard saying, "We just recovered part of the wing and are attempting to recover more of the airplane."

The transmissions were captured from roughly 9:15 to 9:30 p.m.

The investigation into Wednesday's plane crash remains in a very early stage in the process, however. Moats said a preliminary report on the crash would be issued in about 10 days with a full report expected in about a year.

Chesco Halloween Candy Needle Hoax

0

Following an intensive investigation, the Kennett Square Police Department and Chester County Detectives have determined that an earlier report of needles found in Halloween candy in Kennett Square, PA is unfounded.

Police in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania said they were notified about midnight Sunday that Halloween candy handed out in the borough's Stenning Hills section had been tampered with. Needles were discovered inside five wrapped Twix bars handed out to four different children in the area, police said.

The Kennett Square Police Department first alerted the community via its Facebook page on Sunday morning, saying that a "needle-type item was found inside five wrapped Twix bars given to four different children the evening of Oct. 31, 2015 in the Stenning Hills area of the borough."

Police said the two children have since recanted their stories.

"Sometimes proving that a crime did not happen is as important as proving that a crime did happen," said District Attorney Tom Hogan. "In this case, law enforcement treated the initial report seriously, notified the community for the sake of safety, but kept doggedly investigating the matter. As a result of that persistence, we are now able to assure the citizens of Kennett Square that nobody was trying to harm any children with Halloween candy."

The children involved, aged 11 and 12, will not be formally charged but will instead be dealt with by their respective parents. Both families apologized for the incident, recognizing the serious impact it had on the community.

"Anybody who has raised kids knows it sometimes takes some work and time to get the full truth behind an initial story," District Attorney Hogan added. "At this point, we are simply glad that we can assure the parents and children of Chester County that Halloween remains a safe and fun event."

Police said they immediately began investigating and the candy and wrappers were immediately submitted for examination. They later released photos of the candy in question showing needles sticking out of the chocolate bars.

In Gloucester County, New Jersey, Woodbury Heights Police said they received a report of a needle or pin being found in a Snickers Almond chocolate bar.

Another report of a razor blade found in a Halloween Snickers bar was also being investigated in Bristol Borough, Bucks County.

And a girl in western Pennsylvania admitted to making up a story about finding a razor blade in her candy after cutting her mouth with the blade, requiring stitches.

Police asked that anyone with information about candy tampering contact their respective department.

'Saturday Night Live' Plays the Trump Card

0
0

Dana Carvey, while appearing on "The Tonight Show" last week, offered a "Saturday Night Live"-worthy Donald Trump impression – and a Johnny Carson-worthy assessment of the White House wannabe.

“I’m not saying I want Donald Trump to be president – but I never want to live in a world where Donald Trump isn’t running for president," Carvey told Jimmy Fallon. "My quality of life has gone way up.”

The line, funny and insightful, captured the paradoxical nature of Trump's strange place in the increasingly melded pop and political cultures. The developer with an ego as big as his real estate portfolio and hair as overblown as his rhetoric provides an easy – and seemingly willing – target for comedians. Yet he until recently stood atop the GOP presidential polls – a product, perhaps, of his self-created persona as an outsider who tells some people what they want to hear and puts on a show that’s amusing to some and vile to others.

The former "Celebrity Apprentice" star's entertainment and political careers are set to collide this weekend when he hosts "SNL," setting the stage for the biggest test yet of a presidential run that started as a joke and has grown into something far more difficult to label.

Trump's far from the first office seeker to appear on TV's longest-running, skit-driven platform for political satire. From President Gerald Ford's taped segment during the 1976 election cycle to 2008 cameos by Barack Obama, John McCain and Sarah Palin to Hillary Clinton's recent turn as an earthy bartender named Val, an "SNL" spot has proved a rite of passage for candidates, offering a way to display a sense of humor.

But much of the lead-up to Trump's second "SNL" gig (he last hosted in 2004) smacks more of the furor that engulfed the 1990 appearance of Andrew Dice Clay. The comic's misogyny-laced act spurred then-cast member Nora Dunn and musical guest Sinead O'Connor to boycott the show.

Clay’s defenders have said he was playing an offensive, loudmouthed character. Sometimes, it seems like Trump is doing the same – and producing similar polarized reactions. Latino groups have called on NBC, which fired Trump from "The Celebrity Apprentice," to sack him from "SNL," saying venom he's spewed at Mexican immigrants is being unjustly rewarded with a major forum beyond the traditional campaign trail.

There’s little doubt that Trump loves the spotlight and is willing to say whatever he thinks necessary to stay in its glare. But, as Carvey essentially put it, Trump is worth a few laughs – until he isn't.

A Record Warm Friday?

0
0

Close Wednesday, 'Easier' Record Friday
We came within one degree of a record Wednesday in Philadelphia, with a high temperature of 80. That was a full 20 degrees above the long-term average or “normal.” Record warmth has already hit the Eastern U.S. this week from New York State to Florida. Here’s a map of temperatures compared to “normal” Friday afternoon:

The areas in the red shades are between 10 and 25 degrees above normal! Here are some of the existing records Friday:
Philadelphia - 79
Atlantic City - 77
Wilmington - 79
Allentown - 78
Trenton - 77
Reading - 77
Mt. Pocono - 69

Not all of those records will be tied or broken, but some will -- IF there’s enough afternoon sunshine.

It’s All About The Sun
Temperatures were held down Thursday but a full day of overcast conditions. The atmosphere overall wasn’t any cooler than when we hit 80. And Friday, the atmosphere is warm enough for us to go above 80 degrees. But it takes sunshine for that to happen. With a low temperature of 66, it won’t take a lot of sun for the temperature to jump to near record levels. But often, ahead of a cold front (like Friday), morning clouds tend to break up and allow for at least some sunshine.

2 Found Shot Dead Near Boathouse Row

A maintenance crew found two people shot to death inside an SUV parked in a Fairmount Park field Friday afternoon, police tell NBC10.

The crew was emptying trash cans at a picnic pavilion just off the 800 block of Lemon Hill Drive around 2:40 p.m. when they made the discovery. The area is just north of busy Boathouse Row and yards from the historic Lemon Hill mansion.

Police said a man and woman were in the back seat of the white Toyota Sequoia SUV with Arizona plates. A back passenger-side window was shattered by gunfire.

The victims, both believed to be in their 30s, each suffered a gunshot wound to the head, police said. It's not immediately clear when the shooting happened. A maintenance worker at the scene told NBC10 the man was naked, but the woman was dressed.

Philadelphia Police 9th District Capt. Ray Convery said although the vehicle is registered out-of-state, its owner is from the Philadelphia area.

"We believe the [male victim] in the vehicle is the owner of the vehicle, but I haven't been able to confirm that yet because of the out-of-state tags," Convery said.

Homicide detectives are picking up the investigation. Convery said it's still not clear if the shooting was a double murder or a murder-suicide.

Convery said it appears the broken window was shot from the inside, but a weapon hasn't been found. The SUV will be towed to the Philadelphia Medical Examiner's office to be processed by crime scene investigators.

The SUV was parked just up a hill from Boathouse Row, Kelly Drive and a popular running and walking path along the Schuylkill River.

"The area itself is usually very nice and quiet. We've not had problems up here in the past," Convery said.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
