Two teen boys were arrested after they allegedly stole from a home in Ventnor City early Sunday morning.

Police say four male suspects burglarized a home on the beach block of Oxford Avenue around 3:15 a.m. and fled the scene as they were chased by a resident. Ventnor Police, Longport Police and Atlantic City Police K9 all responded to the scene and set up a perimeter. After searching for an hour, they found two suspects, both 16-year-old boys from Atlantic City, according to investigators.

One of the teens was apprehended by a K9 after initially refusing to surrender while the other teen surrendered to police, according to officials. They are both charged with three counts of burglary, theft, conspiracy, and criminal mischief. One of the teens is also charged with resisting arrest. They were both released pending a court appearance.

The other two suspects remain at large. Police say two additional burglaries were reported in the surrounding blocks during the search.

This investigation is still ongoing.

Officials Monitoring Threats Against Pope: Comments from the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee have raised new security concerns regarding the Pope’s visit to New York, Washington, DC and Philadelphia later this month. Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) mentioned possible threats against Pope Francis, including a case he claims authorities "disrupted." “I’m concerned,” McCaul said during an appearance on ABC's "This Week." “I was briefed by the Secret Service in a classified setting. The Pope is a very –I’m Catholic by the way – he is a very passionate man. He likes to get out with the people. And with that comes a large security risk. We are monitoring very closely threats against the Pope as he comes in to the United States. We have disrupted one particular case in particular. But as the date approaches, I think [we'll] be very vigilant to protect him as he comes into the United States.”

New Early-Childhood Center Opens in Northeast Philadelphia

A new early-childhood education center born out of a nonprofit partnership opened its doors in Northeast Philadelphia for this school year, bringing quality early-childhood education to an area that didn't have many options before.

Before the Kinder Academy opened on Elgin Avenue just off the intersection of Cottman and Castor avenues, in Rhawnhurst, the building where it's located sat vacant. But now, leaders and organizers who helped to open the early-childhood education center say it will help the neighborhood.

"This is one of the high-density areas that has very little in options for high-quality programming," Leslie Spina, Kinder Academy's executive director, told NBC10's Katy Zachry.

The Kinder Academy opened in Rhawnhurst is the first early-childhood education center built with funds from the William Penn Foundation and the Public Health Management Corp. -- and the nonprofit team is hoping to open more centers just like it. Rhawnhurst was selected for the first center because of its lack of programs for that type of education.

The building that houses the new Kinder Academy now features insulated floors to keep young students warm, sinks and bathrooms in classrooms and LED lighting.

"We want to give families the opportunity to say I have a high-quality center in my neighborhood and my kid is going to flourish there," Spina said.

Police arrested a man who they say was caught on camera firing a shot at a customer inside a Philadelphia deli.

Nigel Brown, 18, was arrested on Sept. 2 and charged with multiple robberies and other related offenses.

Investigators say Brown walked into the Hoagie City deli on the 600 block of North 40th Street back on August 9 at 12:10 a.m. He then allegedly grabbed a 22-year-old customer inside from behind and tried to rob him.

Surveillance cameras captured the customer, who was armed and licensed to carry, fight Brown off, police said. As the two men fought, the customer's gun fell from his hip. The two men then struggled over the gun until Brown was able to gain control, according to investigators. Police say Brown then fired one shot that narrowly missed the customer and struck the ceiling vent. The customer then chased Brown out of the store but he managed to escape, officials said.

Brown was arrested Sept. 2 in connection to another robbery on the 4600 block of Market Street. Police also say Brown committed two other robberies on the 4500 block of Market Street and 300 block of North 42nd Street.

Mark Wahlberg to Host Papal Event

Actor Mark Wahlberg will host The Festival of Families with Pope Francis in Philadelphia.

And two more big acts have been added to the night's lineup -- Aretha Franklin, The Fray and Marie Miller, a finalist in a singer/songwriter competition.

"We are deeply honored to have Mark Wahlberg serve as our host," Donna Farrell, executive director for the World Meeting of Families, said in a statement.

Performers and Wahlberg were vetted to make sure their beliefs align with church doctrine. Wahlberg grew up in a Catholic family and was the youngest of nine children. As a teenager in Boston, he got mixed up in drugs -- both selling and using -- and alcohol. Wahlberg also spent time in jail for two racially motivated attacks. He and a group of white friends shouted racial epithets at a group of mostly black fourth-graders when Wahlberg was 15. Ten months later, he was charged with attempted murder for beating two Vietnamese men in his neighborhood.

"I have apologized, many times," Wahlberg told the Associated Press in December.

Wahlberg turned his life around, crediting his time in prison and the guidance of a parish priest. When he got out of prison, Wahlberg went on to be a successful rapper, headlining the group Marky Mark. He modeled for Calvin Klein and has enjoyed a wildly successful career in Hollywood, both in front of and behind the camera. Wahlberg is married with four children.

The Festival of Families is the formal ending of the World Meeting of Families, which is a four-day conference that brings people from all over the world.

The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, started singing in her father's Baptist church growing up. She was the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Fray got their start singing in churches.

Franklin, The Frey and Miller will join the lineup of original performers: Andrea Bocelli, Juanes and The Philadelphia Orchestra.

Back-to-School Fashion Trends: The Hot List

$
0
0

As the September gets rolling and the carefree days of summer come to a close, the most popular question among students is, "What are you wearing?"

Back-to-school shopping spending is second only to the winter holiday shopping season, according the National Federation of Retailers

In its latest Back-to-School Spending Survey, the NFR found the average family with children in grades K-12 plan to spend an average of $335.38 in 2015.

If you're like most parents, you’ve waited till the dog days of summer to take advantage of last minute deals, and with so many options, how do you know if you’re shopping the right trends?

Don’t fret. Here are some of the latest fashions that will be sure to score an A+ in style.

Jeans are a staple to any wardrobe. This season, bright and bold colors give the old classic a new life. And speaking of revamping, "jeggings" have morphed into a new portmanteau, the "tregging." These trouser-leggings are made out of thicker, opaque fabrics to resemble wool, corduroy or leather. The perfect pants to carry-over from fall to the colder winter months.

One trend that has been going strong for a few years now is British Rock. This fashion nod to London seems to be hitting its peak this season, with references to the red, white and blue of the Union Jack on shirts, plaid color patterns and accessories.

For that Gwen Stefani-like mom or Mick Jagger-esque dad, bold black and white prints on rock and roll motifs for girls and button-down shirts with ties for boys create a rocker-cool style. Throw on a vest over a graphic t-shirt or accessorize their favorite skinny jeans with a studded belt, and they'll look ready to take the stage.

Another trend that is taking fashion to new heights pays homage to all things outer space. Colorways of metallic silver, grey, blue, and white, and spacey graphics featuring rockets, aliens, and the Milky Way Galaxy are sure to fullfill your space-camp enthusiast's next out of this world adventure.

Taking cues from the runway trends of adult contemporary fashion, the fall/winter 2015 hippie-chic trend has crossed over to children's apparel. From courrèges dresses in burgundy and mustard yellow to oversized button detailing on paisley prints and tunics, the 60s and 70s are enjoying a pint-sized comeback.

Trendy bright colors are also meeting classic style's, like orange and blue rugby tee's, fuchsia peacoats and yellow ribbed sweaters.

Members of a Wilmington, Delaware youth gang were indicted by a grand jury last week for a list of crimes including five shootings that led to injury, a bank robbery, and six murders, officials said.

Officials say its the largest indictment in memory by the Delaware Department of Justice in regards to the number of homicides and shootings involved.

The following alleged members of the "Touch Money Gang" or TMG were charged in the indictment and are currently in custody:

  • JOHN BRISCO, aka “Bin Laden”, 18 years old
  • RAYMIRE BRISCOE, aka “Fats”, 15 years old
  • ALEXANDER FITZGERALD, aka “Trey”, 19 years old
  • BRYANT HAWKES, aka “Black Sosa”, 20 years old
  • AQUANTAY GARNER, aka “Caper Boi”, 19 years old
  • RYLIER GRAYSON, aka “Lier”, 20 years old
  • RONALD MADDREY, aka “Doo”, 20 years old
  • KADIR MCCOY, aka “D-Rose”, 17 years old
  • TYMERE RIGHTER, aka “Frog”, 19 years old
  • JACQUEZ ROBINSON, aka “Quez”, 20 years old
  • RANDY SCOTT, aka “YL”, 23 years old
  • JAYMERE WHITE, aka “Jay 5”, 17 years old
  • DAYMERE WISHER, aka “Day-Day”, 16 years old

The charges against the suspects include murder, conspiracy, possession of a firearm and robbery. Investigators say the murder counts in the indictment are connected to the following killings:

  • Ioannis Kostikidis, a security guard at the American Beauty School, was shot and killed during a robbery attempt at 6th and Tatnall Streets on February 6, 2013;
  • Dwayne Brown - shot and killed in the area of 10th and Kirkwood Streets in Wilmington on May 8, 2014
  • Devon Lindsey - shot and killed on E. 29th in Wilmington on January 18, 2015;
  • William Rollins - shot and killed at the corner of W. 21st and Washington Streets in Wilmington on January 24, 2015;
  • Deshon Sellers - shot and killed on E. 24th Street near Carter Street in Wilmington on February 16, 2015;
  • Malik Watson - shot and killed on 9th Street in the city of New Castle on November 26, 2014. A previous indictment for the murder of Malik Watson was incorporated into this new indictment based on the involvement of the gang.

The indictment also include charges related to five other shootings, several illegal firearm and drug possessions and a bank robbery in Wilmington.

“This indictment alleges what the residents of Wilmington unfortunately have experienced for the last several years, that a gang called TMG was bringing violence to their streets, some of which was committed by teens as young as 14 and 15 years old,” said Attorney General Matt Denn. “The level of violence and brazenness alleged to have been exhibited by TMG members is shocking. The number of shots being fired and the indiscriminate nature of the shootings are alarming. We believe the murders were committed by TMG members who were between the ages of 14 and 19 years old when they pulled the trigger.”
