Drug Dealer Flees Police While Holding Baby: Police

An alleged drug dealer was arrested after investigators say he fled police while holding his infant daughter in Delaware Monday.

Two officers were driving down the 1300 block of Maple Avenue in Elsmere when they spotted Henry Wojnisz, 31, walking down the street while carrying his baby girl, according to officials.

Police say they knew Wojnisz was selling heroin in the area based on a prior investigation and had a warrant for his arrest. When the officers approached him, Wojnisz allegedly ran away while still holding his baby. He then ran into a home on Maple and gave the child to her mother, police said.

The officers continued chasing after Wojnisz and eventually captured him without further incident, according to investigators.

Wojnisz, who police say, had urinated on himself, allegedly had 92 bags of heroin (1.38g) labeled “Lacoste” and 12 doses of Suboxone in his possession.

Investigators checked Wojnisz’s daughter and determined she had not been harmed. They also notified the division of family services.

Wojnisz is charged with endangering the welfare of a child, recklessly/likely to cause injury, resisting arrest and other related offenses. He was committed to the Howard Young Institution after failing to post $5000 secured bail. Information on an attorney was not immediately available.

Tuskegee Airman Dies at 90

Calvin Spann, a New Jersey native and one of the original Tuskegee airmen, died Sunday at his home in Texas. He was 90.

Spann, who was born Nov. 28, 1924, and grew up in Rutherford, volunteered for the Army Air Corps and was sent to Tuskegee, Alabama, in 1943 to start aviation cadet training. He was sent to Italy as a replacement combat pilot after completing his training.

Lt. Spann flew 26 combat missions over Nazi Germany.

As a fighter pilot, he participated in the longest bomber escort mission in 15th Air Force history: a 1,600-mile, round-trip mission, from Ramitelli, Italy, to Berlin.

The objective was to destroy Daimler-Benz manufacturing plant. They were awarded Presidential Unit Citation for the mission and credited with destroying three German Me-262 jet fighters and damaging five more.

But after the war, Spann never flew again. Though he was enlisted in the Air Force Reserves, he was denied the opportunity to maintain his flying hours to keep his pilot’s license. He left the reserves in 1961.

Spann was inducted in to the New Jersey Aviation Hall of Fame in 2006. That same year, Congress awarded the Tuskegee Airmen a Congressional Gold Medal.

Memorial services are being arranged in Texas and New Jersey, said his niece, Linda Smallwood-Greene.

Editor's Note: An earlier version of this story reported that Spann's birthday was on Aug. 28. He was born on Nov. 28, 1924.

Bar Fight Spills Outside, Gunman Opens Fire

A fight inside a crowded bar, apparently caused by a purse-snatching, spilled out onto a Philadelphia sidewalk early Tuesday where gunfire rang out, leaving two people shot.

The incident played out at 55 North Bar at 5th Street and Olney Avenue in Philadelphia’s Olney neighborhood around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

“The bar was very crowded… it was a holiday night and there was some sort of party going on,” said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Apparently, a 24-year-old woman swiped a purse inside the bar, which caused a fight that spilled out onto the sidewalk. At some point one, possibly two, guns were pulled out, said police.

The alleged purse-snatcher was shot in her abdomen and thigh and was listed in stable condition at Einstein Medical Center. A bullet also struck a 22-year-old man in chest and left him in surgery at Einstein in critical condition.

Officers quickly arrived on the scene and saw a man fleeing the scene. Officers chased the man – who didn’t have ID on him – about two blocks to the 500 block of Elkins Avenue where they saw the man threw a handgun down onto the road before taking him into custody, said Small.

Police also expected to charge both shooting victims since the woman allegedly took the purse and the man had previous warrants.

Investigators hoped that surveillance video from inside and outside the bar would help them with their investigation.

$10 to Ride All You Want on SEPTA Subways During Pope Visit

$

0

Organizers have been saying for months that public transit is the way to go to see Pope Francis in Philadelphia and on Tuesday, SEPTA announced plans that make it easier to get into Center City.

“SEPTA is doing everything possible to make public transportation convenient and efficient during the Papal Visit,” said SEPTA General Manager Joseph Casey. “We now know enough about the scheduled event activities and security information to be able to adjust and finalize our plans.”

Some of those adjustments include upgrades to increase capacity and doubling open stations along subway routes while the Pope is in town Sept. 26 and 27. Monthly and weekly passholders can also use credits to Pope weekend travel.

The biggest news is that riders can purchase 3-Day Papal Transit Passes for $10 – $5 if you qualify for a reduced fare – that cover travel on subways trains, buses and trolleys from Saturday, Sept. 26 to Monday, Sept. 28. Those tickets as well as tokens can be purchased at SEPTA sales locations. Cash can also be used to ride buses and trolleys during the Papal Visit.

Add in Regional Rail stops (SEPTA said the 3-day passes won't cover any Regional Rail service and vice versa) to the mix and SEPTA now offers nine stops within a two-mile walk of Logan Square along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway where Pope Francis will hold a Sunday Mass.

[[325672941, C]]

SEPTA’s Market-Frankford Line will run express service in both directions from 69th Street Transportation Center to 30th Street Station before stopping at 8th Street, 2nd Street and Girard stations before stops toward Frankford Transportation Center and local service that includes stops in West Philadelphia.

[[325670321, C]]

The Broad Street Line will operate express trains that will run from AT&T Station with stops at Walnut-Locust, Spring Garden, Cecil B. Moore, North Philadelphia, Erie, Olney and Fern Rock stations in both directions. Local trains will originate at Snyder Station northbound and Olney Station southbound, said SEPTA.

[[325672531, C]]

SEPTA may have added more trains but they didn’t add the usual weekend overnight service to the Pope plan as trains will only run from 5:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. the next day on Sept. 26 and 17.

They also said that regular monthly and weekly passholders can use credits ($5 for monthly, $2 for weekly) toward future pass purchases through the end of the year.

SEPTA said that feedback from riders and passengers led to some of the changes.

The agency didn’t announce exact plans for bus routes but does have a list of modified and suspended routes on its website.

10,000 Pope Tickets Sell Out in Minutes

$

Didn't get a ticket to be up close for Pope Francis' remarks outside Independence Hall? You're not alone.

Free tickets to the Sept. 26 event were gone with a matter of minutes after being made available on a World Meeting of Families Eventbrite page right at noon Tuesday.

By 12:04, the ticket page said "unavailable" and that "all tickets are with other customers." A message reading, "there's a chance tickets may become available, check back soon," left the door open that more tickets could still be released.

By 12:18 p.m. the event page said "sold out" Within minutes, tickets began popping up on Ebay for as little as $125 and as much as $1,000 and up to $500 a piece on Craigslist.

Organizers said 10,000 tickets were made available to the general public on a first-come, first-serve basis. Each person could register for up to four passes.

Organizers faced an outcry last week over a ticket plan keeping most of Pope Francis' audience at his two biggest Philadelphia events several blocks away. A map added to some confusion over the size of the ticketholder-only zone.

Here are answers to some key questions:

DO I NEED TICKETS TO ATTEND THE POPE'S PUBLIC EVENTS IN PHILADELPHIA?

It depends on the event. The pope is holding three major public events in the city: a Sept. 26 speech on immigration and religious freedom in front of Independence Hall, an appearance at the closing festival of the World Meeting of Families on Sept. 26 on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and a celebration of Mass on Sept. 27 on the same boulevard.

DO I NEED TICKETS FOR THE INDEPENDENCE HALL SPEECH?

Yes.

Besides the 10,000 tickets released Tuesday, thousands of other tickets are being given out to parishes with large immigrant communities in an effort to assure a diverse audience.

DO I NEED TICKETS FOR THE TWO BENJAMIN FRANKLIN PARKWAY APPEARANCES?

No, if you don't mind standing at least 2.5 blocks, or a quarter-mile, away.

Francis' appearance at the closing festival of the World Meeting of Families on Sept. 26 is expected to draw 750,000 or more people, his celebration of Mass on Sept. 27 up to 1.5 million.

If you want to stand in the 2.5 blocks closest to the stage on Sept. 26 or the altar on Sept. 27, you will need a ticket.

WHO GETS TICKETS FOR THE TWO BIG EVENTS?

Tickets are being distributed primarily to parishioners in the Philadelphia Archdiocese, plus surrounding dioceses in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

The thousands of people attending the World Meeting of Families, the triennial Catholic conference attracting Francis to Philadelphia, are automatically receiving passes. Passes also are being given to event sponsors and members of other faith communities and church social service programs.

There are also 10,000 tickets for each day that will be made available to the general public. They will be distributed Sept. 9 through a website on a first-come, first-served basis; details have not yet been announced.

Papal visit planners decided to make that last batch available after a backlash over the announcement this week that several blocks up front had been set aside for ticket holders and that tickets were largely reserved for parishioners in the city and four surrounding counties.

IF I DON'T HAVE A TICKET, WILL THERE STILL BE AN OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THE POPE?

Yes. Organizers also announced that Francis will parade along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway before the Sept. 26 and 27 events, giving many an opportunity to see him up close. They said the parade the first day would likely be longer than the one before the Mass.

Papal events will also be broadcast on 40 huge screens throughout the city for crowds to watch all his appearances during his two-day visit to Philadelphia, including those that are not public.

A Pennsylvania barbershop has been fined $750 for refusing to cut a woman's hair.

Barbiere advertises itself as a high-end gentlemen's barbershop and offers complimentary beers and spirits. The Washington barbershop was recently fined by the state's Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs for gender discrimination.

Owner John Interval tells the Washington Observer-Reporter the fine "infringes" on his shop's environment. Interval says, "Guys come here as a kind of a little getaway, to be around other guys."

The woman had booked hair appointments online for herself and her boyfriend.

She asked for a short haircut known as a wave but was turned away.

Interval says his staff recommended other shops and even offered to pay for a haircut at someplace else to compensate for the inconvenience.
