Police Sgt. in Crash Dies on Daughter's Birthday

What was meant to be a day of celebration turned to one of sorrow for a young girl after her father, Philadelphia Police Sgt. Rafael Ali, died on her 10th birthday.

Sgt. Ali finished his shift in Nicetown's 39th District at 6 p.m. on Saturday, officials said.

That's the last time anyone in the police department saw him.

Ali, police said, was driving southbound on Henry Avenue near Dupont Street in Roxborough shortly after 11:30 p.m. Saturday when he lost control of his 2014 Dodge Ram at a curve, mounted the center median and crashed into a tree.

The pickup truck was crushed. Firefighters had to extricate Ali, 32, who investigators said was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, from the driver's seat.

Ali, a father of two who spent 10 years working as a police officer, died less than an hour later. He was pronounced dead at 12:20 a.m. at Albert Einstein Medical Center. His daughter turned 10 on Sunday while his son is 8-years-old.

At a news conference Sunday afternoon, Accident Investigation District Capt. John Wilczynski said investigators have determined that speed played a major role in the crash. He said there was no indication that alcohol was involved.

Wilczynski said investigators are theorizing that Ali, who worked a 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. shift in the 39th District on Saturday, may have fallen asleep at the wheel. He said there is no evidence that he hit the brakes at all as his truck mounted a median at a curve near Dupont Street and then traveled about 150 feet on grass before striking the tree.

"You can speculate he fell asleep. That's what our investigators are thinking," Wilczynski said. "Henry Avenue, where that turns right there, if you continue straight, you would mount that grass median. That's a possibility of course, [that he fell asleep], but we can't prove it. The vehicle did not skid."

"Normally someone would hit a brake, swerve, so it's just a thought he might've fallen asleep," the captain continued.

Wilczynski said Ali was critically injured on impact, but that he stayed alive for a brief period until medics took him to Albert Einstein Medical Center. There, the young officer, who resided in East Oak Lane not a far drive from where the crash occurred, died as a result of his injuries.

Wilczynski said police are unsure where Ali was traveling at the time of the crash, and that his last known contact with anyone from the police department was when he left work about 6 p.m. Saturday.

A routine autopsy will be performed on Ali's body to rule out the possibility that any medical problems or substances are to blame for the crash, Wilczynski said. "We're really at a loss to understand what happened," he added.

Wilczynski said investigators are unsure at this point how fast Ali's truck was traveling, but that it's clear it was "well over" the posted 35 mph speed limit. He cautioned drivers that speeding on Henry Avenue is a constant problem and warned people to slow down on the curvy road that cuts through Northwest Philadelphia.

Ali's commander, Philadelphia Police Lieutenant Tracy Thomas, spoke to NBC10 about the type of man Ali was.

"A dedicated family person," Thomas said. "He was an example of how we want our police supervisors to be."

It was a sentiment echoed by Ali's neighbor Priscilla Chandler.

"He loved his children," said Chandler. "Always had them here playing back and forth. Very friendly with the neighbors."

Melvin Booker, another neighbor, described a time when Ali came to his aid.

"I got in an accident on Henry Avenue," Booker said. "A guy cut me off and my tire blew. He [[Ali]] stopped by and helped me change it. He was just awesome."

A year ago this month, the 39th District lost another officer to an off-duty crash. Officer Seth Stellfox was riding his Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycle home after a cross-country trip when he fatally crashed on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Cumberland County Aug. 12, 2014. He was 33.

A crash in Northeast Philadelphia Sunday morning that flipped one car onto the lawn of a house sent two people to area hospitals.

Medics were called to Levick Street and Summerdale Avenue, in Oxford Circle, shortly after 9 a.m. for reports of people possibly trapped in one of the cars involved.

Minutes later, medics rescued two victims from the scene. One was taken to Aria Health's Torresdale hospital and the second was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center. There was no word on the victims' conditions.

Photos taken by an NBC10 photographer at the scene showed a badly damaged silver car flipped onto its side on the front lawn of a corner house, its windshield shattered. A traffic light at the corner was taken down in the crash.

The second car involved was shown in photos up on the curb in front of the house, also badly damaged.

Guardian Angels Land in Wilmington

Wilmington is getting its own Guardian Angels.

Three members of the Baltimore chapter of the citizen crime-fighting group, as well as Founder and President Curtis Sliwa, arrived in Wilmington on Sunday to begin the process of organizing a local chapter to fight crime in the violence-plagued Delaware city. The Guardian Angels, known for the red berets they wear while on patrol, have worked in Philadelphia at times when high-profile crimes, including the Kensington Strangler, were plaguing the city.

The Guardian Angels said citizens of Wilmington asked that they establish a local chapter there because other measures taken by the city to curb the crime and violence have not worked.

Newsweek magazine dubbed the city "Murder Town USA" last year.

A 53-year-old man shot by a masked intruder in his North Philadelphia home early Sunday morning had just left SugarHouse Casino before he was attacked, police said.

In a news release later Sunday, police said that the victim told officers he has just arrived at his house on Old York Road near Tioga Street about 12:30 a.m. after leaving SugarHouse Casino. When he walked into his kitchen, police said the man told them, he found a man standing there with a towel covering his face, brandishing a silver handgun.

The victim tried to knock the gun away from the masked man, but the man fired twice, hitting him once in the side of his head by his ear. The victim ran out the back door after he was shot and called police, and the shooter ran out the front door, police said.

The victim was taken to Temple University Hospital and was listed in stable condition. It was unclear Sunday whether the shooting was in any way connected to his trip to SugarHouse, but police continued to investigate the shooting later Sunday.

Police said the victim told investigators he did not recognize the shooter, but described him as a man in his mid-20s who was about 5 feet 7, stocky and had a light beard. He wore a black shirt and tan cargo pants.

Jersey Teen Shot by Friend Playing with Gun: Police

A South Jersey teenager who initially told police he had been shot in the chest Saturday night by a masked suspect was actually shot by another teenager who was playing with a gun, police said on Sunday.

Mount Laurel Police Lt. Stephen Riedener, a police spokesman, said in a news release that police were called to a house on Marne Highway near Hartford Road about 11:15 p.m. Saturday for the report of a man shot. When they arrived, they found a 17-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the chest.

The teen initially told officers he was sitting on the porch when a masked suspect approached and shot him, police said. But officers who were searching the area for that suspect tracked down two more teens who were on foot in the immediate area, authorities said. One of those teens is identified as 18-year-old Kurtis M. Cercone, of Mount Laurel, and the other, a juvenile whose identity has not been released, is a 17-year-old boy from Trenton.

Investigators eventually determined that Cercone and the other teen had been with the victim inside his house and were "handling a handgun that the two had brought with them." The gun went off by accident, police said, and the teen was wounded in his chest.

The two teens then fled the house before police arrived. When officers caught up with them and began to investigate, police said, they eventually found two handguns in Cercone's car, which was parked in a nearby lot. Cercone was charged with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a firearm, and he was committed to Burlington County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail, police said.

The 17-year-old boy from Trenton was charged with aggravated assault and gun possession. He was being held at Burlington County Juvenile Detention Center on Sunday.

The teen boy who was wounded is hospitalized at Cooper University Hospital and his injuries are not life-threatening, police said.

Two men are in the hospital after a shooting near a Philadelphia night club early Sunday morning.

Police were patrolling the area of the night club Suite 822 Ultra Lounge on the 800 block of North Broad Street around 2:15 a.m. when they heard a gunshot. As the officers left their vehicle they heard at least three more gunshots coming from the 1300 block of Parrish Street.

The officers also spotted a black BMW M6 that was speeding southbound on Broad Street but were directed back to the 1300 block of Parrish Street where they found two fired cartridge casings on the ground. Several other vehicles were also fleeing the area at the time, according to investigators.

Police later found the BMW at Presbyterian Hospital. Officials say there was blood on the seats and at least one projectile inside the vehicle.

Police then found a 27-year-old man and a 23-year-old man in the emergency room of Presbyterian. The 27-year-old man was suffering from several gunshot wounds. He underwent surgery and is currently in critical condition. The 23-year-old suffered one gunshot wound to the right hand and is currently stable.

No arrests have been made and police have not yet released information on any suspects. They continue to investigate.

A Kutztown University building was evacuated during a hazmat situation Sunday afternoon.

Kutztown University Police received a report around 2:45 p.m. from custodians working on a basement floor of Deatrick Hall of fumes that were causing throat irritation and dryness. Police and firefighters responded to the scene and experienced similar symptoms.

Emergency officials and the Berks County Hazmat Team later arrived at the scene.

Most of Deatrick Hall's 300 residents were attending Welcome Week activities on campus at the time, officials said. Around 12 residents inside Deatrick Hall were evacuated and the Hall was closed until it was deemed safe around 6 p.m.

In all, 12 students, three custodians, two police officers and two firefighters were treated for throat irritation and dryness by medics at the scene.

Officials believe the symptoms were caused by a reaction to something in the trash. The hazmat team ventilated the basement of the building and the scene was cleared up by fresh air, officials said. They also removed and emptied dumpsters outside of Deatrick Hall as a precaution.

Kutztown University, located in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, is one of 14 schools comprising the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE).

Officials Detect Legionnaires’ Disease Bacteria at WCU

Hot water was shut off to several buildings at West Chester University after officials detected Legionnaires’ disease bacteria.

Officials detected legionella bacteria in the hot water systems in the following West Chester University buildings: Anderson Hall, Main Hall, Merion Hall, Messikomer Hall, Peoples Building, Ruby Jones Hall, Schumucker Science Center South, Speakman Building, and 13/15 University Avenue.

While officials say the bacteria levels detected are “not cause for immediate concern,” they still shut off hot water to the buildings for the weekend. The hot water systems will also be super-chlorinated to kill the bacteria.

Last month an employee at West Chester University tested positive for Legionnaires’ disease and officials found legionella bacteria in the cooling towers of some of the buildings. The towers were treated to kill the bacteria and officials confirmed the treatment was effective after re-testing.

Legionnaires' disease is a severe form of pneumonia spread by bacteria commonly found in water supplies. Symptoms, which normally begin 2 to 14 days after someone is exposed to the bacteria, include cough, shortness of breath, high fever, muscle aches and headaches.

A woman faked her own death in order to escape her abusive ex-boyfriend, according to police.

On Saturday shortly before 6:30 a.m. police responded to a home on the 800 block of Radclyffe Street in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania for a report of a woman experiencing a seizure and not breathing.

When police arrived they found the man who called them, 25-year-old Bartholomew Palumbo, as well as his 29-year-old ex-girlfriend who was badly injured.

The woman, who managed to crawl up the stairs when police arrived, told investigators Palumbo assaulted her by choking her, slamming her to the floor, punching her in the face and throwing her down the basement steps. The woman said she then faked her own death by acting out seizures.

Believing he had killed her, Palumbo went upstairs, called 911 and claimed his ex-girlfriend had suffered a seizure, according to investigators.

Investigators later determined the woman’s story was true. Palumbo was taken into custody and detectives confirmed the assault. He is charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, terroristic threats and recklessly endangering another person. He was arraigned and lodged in Northampton County Prison on $100,000 bail.

Palumbo's attorney information was not immediately available.

The woman was taken to St. Luke’s University Hospital where she is currently in critical condition.

One-Of-A-Kind Painted Mushroom Stolen From Chester County Sidewalk

D. Lynn Sinclair just wants her mushroom back, but this is no ordinary mushroom. The 108-pound concrete, elaborately painted statue of a mushroom is one-of-a-kind and was on display outside Sinclair's cafe in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania when she says someone swiped it.

The piece of art, worth an estimate $1,000 is one of eight painted mushrooms on display throughout the quaint Chester County town ahead of the annual Mushroom Festival, schedule for September 11-13.

Sinclair sponsored the mushroom by artist Mindy Kempista called "Sunrise to Sunset," which was to be auctioned off at the festival.

Sinclair said the mushroom disappeared  from outside Sinclair's Sunrise Cafe along East State Street where she said it was placed just outside the door.

While it may have been young pranksters who got away with the mushroom, Sinclair has filed a police report.

However, Sinclair said if the mushroom is returned, there would be no questions asked.
