Police Renew Push To Solve Death of NJ Woman

The death of a South Jersey woman who disappeared two years ago and was later found dead in thick brush near her Camden County apartment complex remains a mystery, and investigators on Monday renewed their push to solve the case.

Carol Reiff, 59, was supposed to meet her daughter for a trip to the shore on June 21, 2013, according to a new video about the case made by Gloucester Township police. When Reiff never showed that day, her daughter, Dawn Sentanni, became worried and called police.

Authorities launched a massive, days-long search for Reiff around the Lakeview Apartments, on Lower Landing Road in Blackwood, where she lived. Reiff was an avid runner, and her car was found parked near her apartment, police said.

Three days later, on June 24, 2013, a New Jersey State Police K9 found Reiff's body in a heavily wooded area by the complex, off of Route 42.

Reiff's death has not been ruled a homicide by the Medical Examiner's Office, police said, but the Camden County Prosecutor's Office and Gloucester Township police are continuing to investigate her death as suspicious. In the newly released video, a police detective said it appeared that Reiff's body was placed in the woods and had been there for some time. Reiff was last heard from the night of June 20, 2013, when she spoke with her daughter about their plans.

There is a $20,000 reward offered for information leading investigators to solve the case. Police and Reiff's daughter implored anyone who knows anything at all to come forward.

"We appreciate everybody who has come forward to date, but we strongly believe there is more information to be found," Sentanni said in the Gloucester Township police video. "Our family has struggled for the last two years trying to make sense of this, trying to find some closure, and it's not just about us. It's about the community as a whole ... we do not want any other family to hurt or suffer in the way this affects a family and in the way this has affected our family."

Anyone with information about Reiff's death can provide it anonymously via the Gloucester Township Police Department's tip line at 856-842-5560 or the Citizens Crime Commission at 215-546-8477. Tips can also be texted by sending keyword TIP GLOTWPPD, along with a tip message, to 888777, or emailed to ccpotips@ccprosecutor.org.

A New Jersey man took a gamble that backfired over the weekend.

William Robert Compton, 53, of Manalapan, was arrested on Friday after he allegedly relieved himself in the coin tray of a slot machine at Parx Casino in Bensalem, Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania State Police arrived on the gaming floor at 4:35 p.m. for the report of the man urinating on a slot machine. Compton resisted arrest, getting physical with officers when they attempted to take him into custody, police said.

Parx Casino management issued a permanent eviction banning Compton from all its properties.

Compton was taken to Bucks County Correctional Facility. He remained there on Monday in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Several Brands of Bottled Water Recalled

Niagara Bottling has recalled its bottled water products after one of its spring sources was contaminated with E. coli.

The company urged customers to avoid drinking the water without boiling it first. The water should be boiled for one minute and then cooled. While it was not immediately clear how widely the products were distributed, several major supermarket chains with stores across the northeast issued releases saying they had carried the water.

E. coli can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches and other symptoms. Niagara says it has not received any complaints of injury or illness.

The company says the contamination was discovered in the water supply on June 10, but the spring source did not notify it in a timely manner, so they have stopped using the source.

The contaminated water was sold under the following brand names:

  • 7-Eleven
  • Acadia
  • Acme
  • Big Y
  • Best Yet
  • Morning Fresh
  • Niagara
  • Nature’s Place
  • Pricerite
  • Shaw’s
  • Shoprite
  • Superchill
  • Western Beef Blue
  • Wegman’s

All spring water products produced at the company’s facilities in Hamburg and Allentown, Pennsylvania between 3 a.m. June 10 to 8 p.m. June 18 were recalled.

Niagara Bottling did not immediately respond to media inquiries, but several supermarkets sent out press releases addressing the recall. Bottled water products were recalled at ACME Markets in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania; at Shaw’s grocery stores in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont; and at Wegmans grocery stores, which operate in Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Affected products have codes that start with the letter F or A. The first digit after the letter indicates the number of the production line. The next two numbers indicate the day, then the month in letters, the year, and then the time, based on a 24-hour clock.

Neighbors on Edge Amid Rash of Car Break-Ins

A rash of more than 60 car break-ins in a month has residents in a Philadelphia neighborhood on edge.

In a Facebook post on a Southwest Center City Philadelphia public community page late Monday afternoon, Steve Cobb, chief of staff to Councilman Kenyatta Johnson -- whose district covers the neighborhood -- wrote that there have been 79 thefts from auto reported in the entire 17th Police District in the last 30 days. The 17th District covers swaths of Southwest Center City, Point Breeze and South Philadelphia.

A smaller residential area of Southwest Center City between 17th and 25th streets and Lombard and Federal streets has been hit the hardest over the last month, according to a law-enforcement source. Within that area, 53 car break-ins have been reported since May 22, the source said.

Cobb wrote in his social-media post that 67 thefts from auto have occurred within the district's Police Service Area 1, which runs from Washington Avenue north to Lombard Street, and Broad Street west to the Schuylkill. Of the thefts from auto, about 60 percent involved Hondas, Cobb wrote.

"The 17th District police are aware of this trend and are actively investigating and implementing strategies to reduce this," he added. "The police have circulated flyers and used social media to notify residents about this rise in break-ins."

He urged any residents with surveillance cameras to check the footage and notify police if they spot anything unusual.

"I'm just frustrated," said Kevin Montgomery, a neighborhood resident whose Honda Civic was broken into twice in nine days. Montgomery said he first found his car broken into on Christian Street between 24th and 25th streets the morning of June 10. On Saturday morning, he walked outside to find his car broken into again -- with his window smashed -- on Madison Square between 24th Street and Grays Ferry Avenue, less than a block from the last break-in site.

"This is why your tax base is leaving," Montgomery, who works at a city university and has lived in the neighborhood for nearly four years, said of the city. "It's a neighborhood where property taxes went up 400 percent."

The law-enforcement source said the thief or thieves have not been stealing parts from the cars, but taking items from inside. Police in the area are warning people not to leave their cars unlocked or leave anything valuable -- even loose change -- in plain sight.

In another string of car break-ins further south overnight, a police spokeswoman said, nine break-ins were reported on 29th Street near Snyder Avenue, in South Philadelphia, on Monday morning. There was no indication from police on Monday that those break-ins were connected with the ones in Southwest Center City.

Daytime Shooting Wounds 7 in Philly, Shotgun Found

A broad-daylight shooting left seven people, including three kids, wounded in Philadelphia Monday afternoon.

Police said that the victims -- including a 3-year-old girl, an 11-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy -- were shot on Hilton Street near F in Kensington, just off the intersection of Kensington and Allegheny avenues, about 2:30 p.m.

The other victims are a 31-year-old woman, a 47-year-old man, a 25-year-old man and a 23-year-old man, according to police.

Four of the victims reportedly suffered graze wounds, and the three additional victims were taken to Temple University Hospital, where two were in critical condition and one was stable, according to police. A shotgun was recovered by police at the scene, but no arrests have been made.

Shotgun pellets left marks on walls and punctured holes in a children's pool sitting in the middle of the street.

"It was scary," said neighbor Naja Singletary. "I was traumatized. It could've been my child out here."

It appears the shooting was the culmination of a fight that broke out earlier in the day between the shooter and several people. According to investigators, the man threatened the group by saying he was coming back.

The shooting comes on the heels of a weekend shotgun shooting at a block party in West Philadelphia that wounded 10 people. Police are still searching for two male suspects.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey called the shooters in both incidents "ignorant."

"It just makes absolutely no sense," he said. "Some of these guys, they just don't care."

Detectives have a nickname for the suspect and vague description, but have not yet released either.
