A group of motherless ducklings was rescued from a stormwater drain in New Jersey on Tuesday, city officials said.

The nine baby ducks had fallen into a drain at Hamilton Marketplace in Hamilton Township and were unable to escape.

Municipal crews used a jet truck on Tuesday to flush water into the stormwater drains, helping direct the ducklings towards an animal control officer, who was able to rescue eight of the birds.

The ninth duck was plucked from the drain Wednesday morning.

“We have dedicated and compassionate employees serving our residents, and even our local wildlife, here in our community,” Hamilton Township Mayor Kelly Yaede said. "I am proud of the effort these employees demonstrated to rescue the ducklings and transport them to safety."

Because the ducklings' mother was nowhere to be found, the little quackers were taken to the Mercer County Wildlife Center, which cares for injured and young wildlife.

A South Jersey school district fired a bus driver and bus aide after a 4-year-old boy was left on a school bus.

The Stokes School student never made it to his Trenton, New Jersey school Tuesday morning, said Trenton Police Lt. Stephen Varn.

After a period of time, a school district employee spotted the boy on the Delaware Valley Bus Line vehicle when it returned to the Parkside Avenue school midday to pick up students, said Trenton School Board spokeswoman Kathy Smallwood-Johnson.

The school employee then contacted the school principal, the school nurse, Trenton Police and the boy’s mother.

The school nurse checked out the boy, who was unharmed despite being left alone for numerous hours, said police.

The principal and nurse also went to the boy’s home to meet with his mother who demanded the bus driver and aide be let go. On Wednesday, the school district announced that both employees had been fired and the school district would no longer be using the bus company.

Friends and family are mourning a Delaware mother of two who was shot and killed while sitting outside with her children.

Artise Brown, 24, along with a 19-year-old woman were sitting outside a home on W. 6th Street in Wilmington around 8 p.m. Tuesday when a gunman suddenly opened fire.

Brown was struck in the lower back while the 19-year-old was struck in her left leg. Brown's cousin Renaesha Ellington rushed over to her and held her in her arms as they waited for police and paramedics to arrive.

"I tried to get her to grab my hand," Ellington said. "I tried to get her to squeeze my hand. I tried to get a response in some type of way by talking to her and putting pressure on the wound."

As officers responded to the scene a large crowd spilled out into the streets. Witnesses told NBC10 the crowd made it difficult for police and paramedics to get to Brown. A woman in one video posted on social media was upset about the response time from officials however.

Both Brown and the 19-year-old were taken to Christiana Hospital where Brown later died from her injuries. The 19-year-old woman is currently in stable condition.

Brown's family believes the shooting was random and that she was struck by stray bullets fired from down the block.

"He's a coward,' said Candice Brown, the victim's sister. "You shoot in the crowd! In broad daylight with kids outside! So you didn't care. You didn't care!"

Police have not yet released information on any suspects. The investigation is ongoing.

If you have any information on the shooting please call Detective B. Conkey of the Criminal Investigation Homicide Unit at 302-576-3660.

Unexcused Absence Letter, Dad’s Response Go Viral

A Pennsylvania school's decision to give two students unexcused absences after their Montgomery County father took them on a trip to Boston has drawn national attention.

Mike Rossi, 47, of Abington took his 9-year-old twins to Boston to watch him run in the Boston Marathon on April 20. During the three-day trip, Rossi says he took his children to several historical sites.

“My kids learned about the Boston Tea Party,” Rossi said. “They are not going to learn about that in school for probably next year or later.”

Despite Rossi believing the trip was educational, the Abington School District felt differently. Rossi says he received a letter from the principal of Rydal Elementary School, where his kids attend, saying the trip would count as one unexcused absence.

“To get a letter like that that was pretty accusatory and the language was pretty hostile it really made me a little angry,” Rossi said.

School officials say it was the same form letter they send to all parents when children miss school for family trips as part of their policy.

“I was aware of the policy to an extent,” Rossi said. “But the policy is not even clear. It’s very vague.”

Rossi wrote a response to the principal, defending the trip and its educational value. He later posted the principal’s letter and his response on Facebook. The post went viral and as of Wednesday was shared by over 28,700 people.

Raymond McGarry, Esquire President of the Abington Board of School Directors, released a statement Tuesday addressing the controversy and defended the school’s decision while also claiming he’s received the same letter after taking his own kids on a trip.

“I have made that decision more than once for my own children, and would make it again if the right opportunity or circumstances presented themselves to me,” McGarry wrote. “However, each time I made that decision, I knew what the school district’s policy was and understood that I would receive a letter from the school district advising me that my children’s absences were unexcused. I have in fact received such letters. Even as a board member. And it doesn’t bother me one iota when I receive such a letter. I understand that the school district is doing its job.”

Rossi says he met with school representatives Wednesday and was told that while there won't be changes to the policy they may make the language stronger so that all parents are fully aware of the rules.

Rossi also posted another message on Facebook calling the meeting constructive. He also insisted he didn't have a personal issue with the school, teachers or principal and urged his followers not to attack her or send her hate mail.

UPDATE: A teenager is in custody for the hit-and-run that left a Temple University hospitalized in extremely critical condition.

As a Temple University student-athlete remains on life support Thursday morning, authorities say they recovered the car that struck and critically injured the 22-year-old woman as she was riding her bike in North Philly Wednesday.

Police found the silver Mitsubishi Galant -- its windshield shattered -- on a North Philly street early Thursday morning.

The sedan is the vehicle that hit Rachel Hall, of Mullica Hill, New Jersey, at Park Avenue and Diamond Street around 7:25 p.m., throwing the student from her bike, and then fled the scene, according to police.

"It's unknown whether or not this 22-year-old female is going to survive these injuries," said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Hall, who officials say was not wearing a helmet, suffered multiple broken bones and head injuries.

Her father identified his daughter as the victim Thursday morning from Temple University Hospital, where she remains in extremely critical condition.

A senior and honor roll student at Temple, Hall is the goalie for the girl's lacrosse team and has been named to the Dean's List every semester, according to the team's website.

Her father told NBC10 she wants to become a police officer and is set to graduate next week.

"It's just heartbreaking," said Carly Demato, a Temple University sophomore who witnessed the hit-and-run. "I just can't imagine if he got away with it, how terrible that would be for her family and her friends."

Witnesses told NBC10 the male driver initially stopped, but then sped away from the scene after a passenger told him to do so.

"That's preliminary information that we did receive," Scott said.

No arrests have been made, although Scott said they are searching for three teenagers who were in the Galant when the crash occurred.

A Temple University police officer stood by the victim's mangled bike, the back tire bent, as investigators gathered evidence from the North Philly intersection.

"It could happen to anybody and so it's like the reality of it is really scary," said Phoebe Smart, a Temple University freshman.

Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact Philadelphia Police.
