House Collapse Latest Blow to Man with Cancer

A fire and subsequent house collapse destroyed the New Jersey home of a woman, whose son was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer in September.

Kevin Sochanchak is approaching one of his final treatment sessions at Fox Chase Cancer Center, according to Gina Goetschius, who helped setup a GoFundMe page for the cancer-stricken man.

Noticeably shaken, an ashen Sochanchak didn't say much as he stood across from the remains of his family's Pennsauken Township home Saturday.

"I'm in a state of shock," he said as he expressed worry for the family's pets -- a bird and a Chihuahua -- who were inside the residence when the fire broke out.

Luckily his mom and siblings were away at the time.

Wearing a Delaview Fire Company hoodie, Sochanchak watched as fire crews put out hot spots.

Only the home's chimney was left standing after the structure crumbled to the ground.

"They're just wonderful people with I guess not very good luck," said Robert Ilconich, a family friend and neighbor.

Sochanchak received his diagnosis during a September visit to his doctor for severe and recurring heartburn, according to reports.

Months after he learned of the devastating diagnosis, his own home was burglarized, Goetschius said.

Despite his own hardships, the twentysomething volunteer firefighter will now turn his attention to helping his mother, brother and sister as they deal with the loss of their home.

"Hopefully things turn around and look up for them," said Ilconich. "Ill be praying for them."

A  family suffered another loss after their home was destroyed in a massive fire Thursday. Sadie, their beloved dog who was last seen running from the West Chester blaze, was hit by a car and later died.

Neighbors reported seeing the pup, a black Lab-Pointer mix, dashing away from the Wyntre Brook apartments on Phoenixville Pike as crews battled a massive fire that destroyed most of the building.

The family, desperate to bring their pet home, offered a $500 reward for Sadie's return. But, sadly, the dog was found Saturday after being hit by a car.

Sadie passed away from her injuries.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation

An injured motorcyclist was taken into police custody after he led officers on a seven-mile chase from Philadelphia to Plymouth Meeting overnight Saturday into Sunday.

The chase began when officers attempted to pull a man in his 30s over for speeding on the Schuylkill in the area of Roosevelt Blvd. and City Ave. just after midnight, police said. Instead of stopping, the motorcyclist took off, headed westbound on I-76 to the Blue Route. The driver exited on Ridge Pike and then fell off his bike and into an embankment at the intersection of Germantown Pike and Chemical Rd., said officials.

He was transported to Paoli Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He is in police custody and is expected to be charged with speeding, fleeing and eluding officers, police said.

An investigation into why the unidentified driver failed to pull over is underway.

Two men were taken into police custody after a pursuit that crossed state lines ended with a crash on a busy road in Delaware County around dinnertime Saturday.

Police caught the men after the crash in Folsom, Pennsylvania. The suspects ran from the crash scene, but weren't fast enough.

Initially, the men were wanted in connection with a deadly shooting in Wilmington, Delaware. Police found a man -- who died -- and woman -- who was hurt -- with gunshot wounds at 2nd and Monroe streets. While on scene, officers watched a car speed away prompting a pursuit, according to investigators.

The chase crossed state lines into Pennsylvania via Interstate 95 to I-476 northbound and then MacDade Boulevard before ending with a crash on Fairview Road.

"The two suspects, one went down Fairview, one went down that way, on foot, in front of Raymour and Flannigan," said witness Jeanette Youngcourt.

Following a short foot chase, officers captured each suspect, police said. A weapon was also recovered.

Following the shooting, the male victim died at the hospital. The woman remained in stable condition Sunday, said police.

The suspects were held in Ridley Township, Delaware County until Wilmington Police, who are handling the investigation, picked them up.

This Easter was a very special one for a Northeast Philadelphia mother after a local man assisting in the fight against Ebola in Liberia helped connect her with her son - after 17 years of separation.

While in Liberia, Phil Carroll of Save the Children, a nonprofit organization that aids children worldwide, met Anthony Parker whose mother, Josephine Parker, happens to live in Northeast Philadelphia.

Instantly, Carroll made it his mission to help re-connect the mother and son through photographs.

“Luckily I had a Polaroid camera, one of those old cameras, and I said, 'You know, I think we can take a picture of two of us and I can bring it to her when I get back,'” Carroll said. “I took the picture and promised him that I would find his mom Josephine and I would bring it to her.”

And that he did. On Saturday, Carroll and Josephine Parker spent the morning looking through pictures of her son, whom she hasn't seen in 17 years.

Despite not having seen in each other in almost 20 years, the mother and son text each other weekly and hope to see one another in person soon.

Good news for Philadelphia high school students getting ready to graduate! A local community college has done away with tuition for hundreds of incoming students.

The Community College of Philadelphia has come up with the 50th Anniversary Scholars Program as a way to help prospective students get a free college education, the school announced Sunday.

The program is open to all students graduating from city high schools in 2015 who plan on enrolling full time in a degree program for next fall and who qualify as Pell-eligible on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, according to CCP.

"Members of the Community College of Philadelphia Foundation Board so often are inspired by the determined students we meet and the success stories we hear every year,” said Arlene Yocum, president of the Foundation Board. “We are eager to help the College further its goal of educating tens of thousands of students each year, who will develop the skills and knowledge that are needed for their growth and the advancement of this city.”

Prospective students need to apply for financial aid by June 1, 2015. Once it's determined they're Pell Grant eligible, they must complete an online scholarship application.

CCP anticipates spending approximately $200,000 in scholarships in the upcoming school year, $300,000 the next and even more in the years following, said Gregory Murphy, the executive director of the Community College of Philadelphia Foundation.

Police have arrested a New Jersey man accused of dragging a woman into an abandoned home and sexually attacking her.

Authorities had said that Craig Hall, 23, was suspected of grabbing the woman last weekend and forcing her into a vacant house on Bloomfield Avenue in Paterson, New Jersey.

He is accused of sexually attacking her there and then taking her to his apartment on Main Street in Paterson where he assaulted her again, investigators said.

The woman escaped when Hall left his apartment, police said. She was taken to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center.

Working together, the NYPD, Paterson police and Passaic County Prosecutor's Office found Hall in a McDonald's on East 23rd Street in Manhattan and arrested him.

Hall faces charges of kidnapping and sexual assault, investigators said. Information on an attorney for him wasn't immediately available.

A woman who worked on Jeweler's Row in Philadelphia was kidnapped, tied up, beaten, Tasered and robbed before she was left alone at a cemetery Saturday afternoon, police said.

The victim had just finished work for the day and was making her way to her car inside the parking garage at 733 Chestnut St. in Center City around 4 p.m. when three men grabbed her and forced her into an older model burgundy Ford Econoline cargo van with white graffiti on its side and back, investigators said.

Once inside, the men zip-tied her wrists, placed steel shackles on her ankles and covered her head with a hood before they demanded the keys to her work as well as safe codes, which she did not know, police said.

They drove around with the woman in the van for approximately an hour all the while punching, kicking, choking and shocking her with a Taser, before dumping her in a cemetery in Darby, Delaware County, according to officials.

As she tried to escape, her alleged kidnappers returned and forced the victim to give them her bank card PIN and pulled her back into the van. The men stopped four times to withdrawal money, said police.

Following the withdrawals, the unidentified woman was left at the cemetery again. She managed to remove the hood and made her way to Hook Rd. where a woman driver stopped to help and called 911.

The victim was taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital and treated for a concussion, hematoma, bruises, contusions and scratches, according to investigators.

The suspects were described as black men with dark complexions. The driver is in his late 20s, standing 6-foot-3-inches with a muscular build. He was last seen wearing a black hoodie, a ski mask and sunglasses. The second suspect is thin, standing 6-feet tall and wore a gray hoodie, a ski mask and sunglasses. The third man is heavy and stands 5-foot-5-inches tall with a dark hooded sweat shirt and jacket.

All three men were last seen wearing black pants.

Anyone with information on these men is urged to call Philadelphia Police.
