Caught on Video: Bucks County Wrong Way Crash

For nearly three miles, a man drove the wrong way on a busy Bucks County, Pennsylvania roadway before causing a chain-reaction crash that sent six people to the hospital. The entire ordeal was caught on video.

"I was absolutely stunned and unsure what I should do," said Giuliano Damiano. He was driving south along U.S. 1 in Middletown Township around 8:30 p.m. Sunday when he noticed a black car driving next to him on the northbound.

The car sped down the left lane on the roadway's northbound side careening head-on at unsuspecting drivers for more than three minutes, Damiano said.

Drivers laid on their horns trying to avoid a crash. Damiano said he honked too warning drivers about the danger coming at them. Within moments, the black car rammed into three other vehicles.

"I could foresee about eight cars coming in his direction around a blinding curve just as he approached Flowers Mills, where he crashed," the man said. He also recorded the incident and shared the video with us through the NBC10 app.

Six people were taken to St. Mary's Hospital for treatment. Conditions have not been released. Police said the most seriously injured was the wrong way driver.

Middletown Township Police Chief Joseph Bartorilla said investigators believe the man was under the influence at the time of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.

Man Whose Truck Sank in Frozen River, Killing Dog, Charged With Animal Cruelty

The New Jersey man whose dog died when his pickup truck plunged into a freezing river after he allegedly drove the vehicle onto the ice and did doughnuts is now facing animal cruelty charges, officials say.

Andrew Mayer, 27, was charged Monday with animal cruelty in the death of the dog, a young boxer mix named Rollo, on March 1. Rollo was in the back seat of Mayer's truck when it plunged through thin ice on the Toms River while Mayer was allegedly driving on the frozen river.

Mayer was initially arrested last week on criminal mischief and careless driving charges. He appeared in court Monday and told a judge he will represent himself in the case.

Bystanders who saw the truck doing doughnuts on the river called them to the scene. But by the time they arrived, the truck had submerged with Rollo inside.

A friend of Mayer who asked that NBC 4 New York not use his name said Mayer tried to get the dog out of the backseat before the truck crashed through the ice, but the dog was terrified -- and the vehicle sank so quickly.

"He would do anything for that dog, anything," the friend said. "That was his baby."

Mayer, who rents the basement of a home with his friend Daniel Joly, has declined to talk to NBC 4 New York. Police said Joly, who was a passenger in the truck at one point, told investigators he argued with Mayer about driving on the frozen river and got out of the vehicle.

Area police and firefighters searched for the truck and were joined by a helicopters dispatched by the Coast Guard and the New Jersey State Police. The multi-agency search cost "hundreds of thousands of dollars," a police source estimated.

They eventually found the submerged vehicle about 100 feet from the shore. A rescue diver was lowered to the truck and found the dead dog dog inside.

The truck was removed from the river Monday.

Grief Counselors at Main Line School After Student Dies

A day after a beloved eighth grader was found dead behind his home, students and staff at his Main Line school returned to class.

The Shipley School had grief counselors on hand Monday morning for students to speak with after learning of the death of classmate Cayman Naib.

Crews from the Greater Philadelphia Search and Rescue Team discovered the 13-year-old's snow-covered body Sunday afternoon in a shallow section of Darby Creek along the family's 17-acre property on Harrison Drive in Newtown Square, according to the Delaware County District Attorney's Office.

The news of Naib's death came four days after the Shipley School student went missing while feeling pressure about school work.

"We are devastated by the loss of Cayman Naib," said Steve Piltch, headmaster of Shipley School. "He was a terrific kid, who was always willing to help and brought a smile to our faces. Our thoughts, love, and prayers are with the Naib family ..."

Naib went missing Wednesday night after leaving his Newtown Square home without his cellphone. Becky Naib, the teen's mother, told NBC10 her son had been under pressure recently to get his school work done. She said the teen may have feared having to admit he was behind and face the consequences both at home and The Shipley School.

"We think his leaving might have been sparked by an email that said he was going to fail a class if he didn't get something in ..." she said.

The Shipley School — a K-12 school located in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania — community gathered Sunday night to remember Cayman. During Sunday's vigil, Piltch told the grieving students that members of the school and community were there to support them no matter what hardships they face.

"If you have a question or you have a concern, whether it's about yourself or a friend or somebody you don't even know, let people know," Piltch said. "Talk about it. Get the support you need."

Counselors will be available for students throughout the week. Piltch also told NBC10 students and staff are showing their support for Cayman's sister, who is a 9th grader at Shipley.

The Delaware County Medical Examiner's Office determined Cayman shot himself.

A Catholic archbishop in charge of organizing Pope Francis' September visit to Philadelphia is spending Monday in the city and will help to unveil a special milkshake hoped to raise cash for the World Meeting of Families conference.

Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, President of the Pontifical Council for the Family which oversees the triennial global conference, will participate in planning meetings with archdiocesan officials ahead of the weeklong event beginning September 22. He will then travel to Washington, D.C. before heading to El Salvador, officials said.

Paglia was supposed to visit in January, but canceled the trip at the last minute because he said additional details about the pontiff's visit to other U.S. cities needed to be hashed out.

Pope Francis will visit Philadelphia, New York and Washington D.C. in his first trip to the United States since becoming head of the church. While in Philadelphia, he's expected to celebrate an outdoor mass along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway for 2 million citizens and visitors.

During the brief stop in Philly, Paglia will also help showcase a special milkshake created by Potbelly Sandwich Shops. The sandwich chain created three Philadelphia-themed shakes for the archbishop and students from Saint Peter the Apostle School and they will choose which one will be sold in Philly-area stores.

Fifty cents from each shake sold from April 1 through September 30 will be donated to cover costs of the World Meeting of Families and Pope Francis' visit.

SEPTA Attempted Rape Suspect Will Stand Trial

A man accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a Center City SEPTA station is in need of mental health treatment but competent enough to stand trial.

Philadelphia Judge Patrick Dugan heard from a doctor Monday who examined Reginald Green's mental state. Based on the doctor's testimony, Dugan ruled that Green should be mentally evaluated for the next month but that the 26-year-old is healthy enough to face charges, according to court records.

Green beat up a woman after she refused his sexual advances last month, said Philadelphia Police.

Green has remained in custody — unable to post 10 percent of $1 million bail — since his February arrest on aggravated assault, indecent assault and attempted rape charges.

Investigators said a 27-year-old woman was trying to get home when she entered the concourse of the Jefferson Station at 10th and Filbert streets around midday on Feb. 9.

Investigators said she was lost while trying to get to Northeast Philadelphia when she spotted the suspect and asked him for directions. The two then carried on a conversation for about 30 minutes inside the station.

The suspect and the woman went into a secluded area — off the platform — where Green asked for sex before beating, kicking and sexually assaulting the woman, said Philadelphia Police Special Victims Unit Captain John Darby.

"He basically pummeled her, he beat her with his fist, kicked her repeatedly," said Darby. "She suffered injuries to her face."

After the struggle, Green fled on foot in an unknown direction.

Police said surveillance video played a key role in Green's arrest two days later. They said he has 11 previous arrests and was recognized by some members of law enforcement.

Green is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on Thursday.

2 NJ Students Die in Same Week: School District

The New Jersey Department of Health is investigating the death of a 6-year-old Newark boy as a possible case of bacterial meningitis.

The boy, a first-grade student at the Oliver Street School, died Thursday. He had been out of school for 10 days with flu-like symptoms, and the Health Department said he spent no time in school while potentially infectious. He had no contact with classmates or teachers either, the department said.

The student's classroom was cleaned as a precaution. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, bacterial meningitis is not as contagious as viruses that cause the common cold or flu, and it can't be spread by casual contact or breathing the same air as an infected person.

It can be treated effectively with antibiotics and most afflicted people recover, though it can cause serious complications like brain damage, hearing loss or learning disabilities. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, increased sensitivity to light and confusion.

Authorities are also investigating the death of a Newark seventh-grader, who died a day before the younger boy. The student attended the Luis Munoz Marin Middle School.

Both schools provided grief counseling for students on Monday.

A student was hurt after a crash caused a school bus to roll onto its side along a South Jersey road Monday afternoon.

The bus, which has the words "Caravan Transport" on the side had stopped at the intersection along Main Street and Daffodil Lane in Lumberton, New Jersey. As it was there, the bus was struck from behind by another vehicle, according to investigators.

The impact caused the bus to tip over onto its side.

There were only three students on the bus between the ages of 10 and 15, according to officials. The kids are students at the Hartford School in Mount Laurel and their parents were notified.

One of the students suffered minor injuries. Officials also told NBC10 the driver of the vehicle that struck the bus is being held for questioning.

The death of Delaware County eighth grader Cayman Naib was ruled a suicide, according to the family.

The family made the announcement on their Facebook page Monday.

"For those who have been following the Naib family’s sad and incredibly devastating news, we have just learned from the medical examiner’s office that Cayman took his own life," a family spokesperson wrote. "The cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head. The gun was taken from the home. The police have informed us that despite being fitted with a trigger lock, the gun was still able to be fired. He was found near the 3400 block of St. David’s Road. His death likely occurred in the early evening of Wednesday, March 4, 2015. We were told that he did not suffer."

The Medical Examiner's Office also confirmed with NBC10 Naib died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

Crews from the Greater Philadelphia Search and Rescue Team discovered the 13-year-old's snow-covered body Sunday afternoon in a shallow section of Darby Creek along the family's 17-acre property on Harrison Drive in Newtown Square.

Retired Officer Killed After Suspect Crashes Into Car

Friends and family are mourning a former Philadelphia Police detective who was killed after a Delaware man who was allegedly fleeing from police crashed into his vehicle.

Charles Permint Jr., a retired Philadelphia Police officer, was in the passenger seat as his wife 60-year-old Ludmilla Permint was driving a Kia Soul on Harbeson Road in Harbeson, Delaware Saturday around 11:50 a.m. A 23-year-old man as well as Permint's 3-year-old granddaughter were also inside the car at the time.

Suddenly their vehicle was struck by a 1995 Chevrolet Tahoe traveling westbound on Forest Road and approaching the intersection of Harbeson.

Police said 26-year-old Rashai Harmon of Lewes, Delaware was behind the wheel of the Tahoe. Harmon allegedly ignored a stop sign moments before the collision.

Harmon, who was wanted on several charges including violation of probation, criminal mischief and terroristic threatening, was fleeing from Delaware State Troopers after they tried to stop him moments earlier, according to investigators. The Troopers stopped pursuing him after Harmon started driving recklessly, police said.

After the crash, Harmon allegedly ran out of his vehicle and tried to flee the scene on foot but was quickly apprehended by responding state troopers, officials said.

Charles Permint Jr. was removed by EMS and taken to the Beebe Medical Center of Lewes where he was later pronounced dead. Ludmilla Permint and the 23-year-old man were treated for minor injuries and later released from the hospital. Permint's granddaughter was flown to the A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children where she was treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

A 26-year-old woman who was in Harmon’s vehicle at the time was also treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Harmon was treated for minor injuries at the Beebe Medical Center. He was later released from the hospital and taken into police custody. He is charged with second-degree murder, vehicular assault, reckless endangerment, possession of a deadly weapon, DUI and other related offenses.

A Police Department spokeswoman told NBC10 Charles Permint Jr. joined the Philadelphia Police force in December of 1966 and was promoted to detective in 1971. He retired from law enforcement in 2001.

Ludmilla Permint told Delaware Online her husband often pursued fugitives during his career in law enforcement, making his death sadly ironic.

"He stopped this one last criminal from doing God knows what," Permint told Delaware Online. "And he did not suffer."

Police are searching for four men who they say robbed a 24-year-old woman in Center City on Saturday, Feb. 28.

The unidentified men followed the victim as she was walking on the 1600 block of Annin Street. One of the suspects then approached the woman and pulled out his hand gun, police said.

The other three men waited across the street, according to police.

After the woman refused to give the armed man money, he allegedly fired a shot in the air and snatched her wallet.

All men fled the scene on foot and were last seen heading south on 1200 block on South 17th Street, where the armed suspect disposed of the wallet in a mailbox.

The suspects later split the money among themselves, police said.

Authorities describe all four suspects as men in their late teens, wearing dark clothing.

Anyone with information regarding the ongoing investigation is asked to contact the Philadelphia Police Department.

Vigil for Fallen Philly Officer Robert Wilson III

Members of the community gathered Monday evening outside the store where a Philadelphia Police officer died while protecting the public.

A public vigil took place at 6 p.m. in front of the GameStop at Hope Plaza on W Lehigh Avenue in North Philadelphia. That store -- where a makeshift vigil sits -- is where Officer Robert Wilson III gave his life in a gunbattle with armed robbers.

Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said Wilson, an 8-year veteran from the 22nd District, "redefined what hero is all about" by his actions to protect others when the gunmen opened fire with their semiautomatics.

"He stepped away from the counter, there were civilians there ... he stepped away so that the shots weren't going directly at them," said Ramsey. "He was actually being hit during the exchange of gunfire but he continued to fight."

That heroism touched many people in the community and prompted Monday's vigil by a community organization One Day at a Time where Wilson volunteered.

Different police groups also put together fundraisers to make sure Wilson's children — ages 1 and 9 — are taken care of.

The Philadelphia Police Department and Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge No. 5 set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for Wilson's children. By Monday night, the fundraiser already raised nearly half of the $10,000 goal.

Donations for the Officer Robert Wilson III Family Memorial Trust Fund can also be made in person at the following Police and Fire Federal Credit Union locations:

  • 901 Arch Street
  • 7604 City Avenue
  • 8500 Henry Avenue
  • Leo Mall, Byberry and Bustleton Avenue
  • 7500 Castor Avenue
  • 3300 Grant Avenue

Checks can be mailed and made payable to:

Radnor Police also announced they would hold a toy drive for Wilson's kids.

Brothers Carlton Hipps, 30, and Ramone Williams, 26, are charged in Wilson's murder.

Trial Begins in Crash That Killed NJ Boy

Max “MJ” Guzman had trouble keeping his composure as he faced the man allegedly responsible for the death of his best friend.

“I wish he could feel pain just like we did,” the 15-year-old boy said. "“I want to see him get locked away for a long time where he belongs.”

The trial began Monday for William Liepe, a New Jersey man accused of driving drunk and causing a three-vehicle crash that left Max partially paralyzed and killed his friend, 9-year-old Ryan Schleyer, in 2011.

“He was my best friend,” Max said. “We did everything together.”

MJ and his father, Max Guzman Sr., both took the stand Monday.

Prosecutors say Liepe’s blood alcohol level was nearly triple the legal limit in April of 2011, when his SUV slammed into the car Guzman Sr. was driving in Hamilton Township. Guzman Sr. was also seriously injured and now walks with a cane.

“It’s tough to talk and see him only 15 feet away,” Guzman Sr. said.

Liepe’s lawyer told the jury his client was not speeding or swerving prior to the crash. He also suggested Liepe’s blood sample could have somehow been compromised.

Liepe is charged with aggravated manslaughter, vehicular homicide and assault and previously pleaded not guilty. His trial was postponed in September after police say Liepe shot himself in the head while free on bail.

“We all know that what he did back in September was a little game,” Guzman Sr. said. “A cat and mouse game to prolong the situation.”

The prosecution is not expected to rest until early next week. Max's mother, Lillian Lopez, says she wants justice for her son and his closest friend.

“Four years went by and he’s still enjoying his life while my son is in a wheelchair and Ryan is buried,” she said. “That’s not fair.”
