Masked Man Points Gun at Doughnut Shop Clerk

Two days after a masked gunman opened fire during a robbery at a Philadelphia doughnut shop, Philadelphia Police released surveillance video of the violent attack in hopes of catching the suspect.

During the heist at the Dunkin’ Donuts at N 5th Street and W Somerville Avenue in the city’s Olney neighborhood Monday morning the gunman fired into the ceiling, said police.

The entire incident was captured on surveillance video. The masked man wearing a gray hoodie could be seen jumping over the counter and pointing a gun at the head of the woman behind the counter as she emptied the register.

The man then grabs some more cash out of the drawer and jumps back over the counter.

He made off with a few hundred dollars, said police. The cash drawers — bills hanging out — remained visibly partially dislodged from behind the counter and doughnuts fell onto the floor during the heist.

After the heist, the gunman possibly got into a Red Toyota Camry with a partial Pennsylvania tag of "EJB," said investigators.

Anyone who knows anything about the robbery or who recognizes the man should contact Northwest Detectives at 215-686-3353. If you spot the suspect, call 911 immediately, said police.

Slain Teen Made Anti-Violence Video

A teen who was fatally shot in a Newark street last month made a video about stopping violence in New Jersey’s largest city in the months before his death, NJ.com reports.

Kyzeir Baker, 16, was shot along with an 18-year-old man on Spruce Street on Jan. 22 and died a few days later at University Hospital, the news site reports.

No arrests have been made in the shooting.

Baker’s death comes a little more than six months after he was interviewed in an anti-violence video posted on YouTube by the Newark HUBB mentoring program. Baker shot the video during a “Youth Television Film, And Press” class over the summer and talked about how teens should “avoid the streets.”

"It's sad. It's like every night somebody dies,” Baker said in the video. “It's sad to see how all of these young teenagers are dying so fast, every day."

In the video, Baker can be seen talking about gangs in Newark, and he recounts a story of a friend who was stabbed to death while trying to rob someone. He told the interviewer about advice his grandfather gave him to stay out of trouble.

"He told me, ‘Don’t get in the gangs, don't get into nothing,’” Baker recalled in the video. “He said, ‘Be you, go out there be a lawyer, doctor, basketball player, whatever you want to be, but avoid the streets.’”

The class’s teacher, Dash Living, told NJ.com that Baker was among 60 children in the class and was one of just a few willing to talk about violence and gangs on camera.

“He was always participating in the discussion,” Living said. “He had courage.”

Baker’s aunt told NJ.com that the 16-year-old was raised mostly by his grandmother after his father abandoned him and his mother got addicted to drugs. She said he was a Shabazz High School student and was on the honor roll in middle school.

Arrest Made in Assault at SEPTA Station

Two days after a man attempted to rape a woman at a Center City SEPTA station police announced an arrest.

Philadelphia Police named Reginald Green as the suspect who investigators said beat up a woman after she refused his sexual advances.

Investigators said a 27-year-old woman was trying to get home when she entered the concourse of the Jefferson Station at 10th and Filbert streets Monday around 1 p.m.

Investigators said she was lost while trying to get to Northeast Philadelphia when she spotted the suspect and asked him for directions. The two then carried on a conversation for about 30 minutes inside the station.

The suspect and the woman went into a secluded area — off the platform — where the 26-year-old asked for sex before beating, kicking and sexually assaulting the woman, said Philadelphia Police Special Victims Unit Captain John Darby.

"He basically pummeled her, he beat her with his fist, kicked her repeatedly," said Darby. "She suffered injuries to her face."

After the struggle, he fled on foot in an unknown direction.

Police initially told NBC10 they believed the victim knew the suspect. On Tuesday, however, officials with the Special Victim's Unit told NBC10 the victim did not know him.

"These were two people who didn't know each other," said Darby.

Police said surveillance video played a key role in Green's arrest late Tuesday. They said he has 11 previous arrests and was recognized by some members of law enforcement.

A brother allegedly led an acquaintance into the path of his sibling, who was waiting with a knife to rob the man.

Police said they arrested 21-year-old Daquan Stevenson and issued an arrest warrant for 24-year-old Roland Stevenson for the knifepoint robbery that took place on O'Daniel Avenue in Newark around 12:15 p.m. Tuesday.

After walking along O'Daniel Avenue, the victim and one of the suspects rounded the corner of a building and the second suspect jumped out with a knife, authorities said.

The victim grabbed the knife to prevent the suspect from stabbing him, causing a serious injury to his hand, investigators said.

As the man tried to fend off one brother, the other sibling -- who was just walking with the man -- joined in, stealing cash and jewelry, police said.

Responding officers located Daquan at his home, but were unable to track down Roland. Both men face robbery, assault and other related charges.

Anyone with information about this incident or Roland's whereabouts is urged to contact Newark Police Detective James Skinner at 302-366-7100 ext. 3135.

Museum Hosts Essay Contest on 'Selma'

A local museum has been chosen to host an essay contest for high-schoolers in regards to the life and works of Martin Luther King, Jr., but it's about more than just the prize money.

The National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia was chosen late last year to be the hosts of this contest due to its contributions to society and the work they've done year in and year out. Entrants are asked to watch the movie Selma, and submit a speech and video as a response to a prompt regarding King's story in the film and how they personalize his life's story.

The contest was the brainchild of the John Templeton Foundation, who partnered with Paramount Pictures on the project, according to Peggy Sweeney, Director of Development for the museum.

Among a star-studded judging panel is Academy Award-nominated and Golden Globe-winning hip-hop artist Common, who starred in Selma. Common joins Dr. Marvin Berkowitz, Shiza Shahid, Van Jones, Xavier de Sousa Briggs, and Douglas O. Tozour.

"At the awards shows, Common talked so beautifully about civil rights and the issues we see today," said Sweeney. "He is a great example of what can be accomplished in a creative democracy."

In the film, Common plays James Bevel, a leader in the 1960's Civil Rights Movement. Bevel and King joined hands with other civil rights activists and walked peacefully across the Edmund Pettus Brudge and helped to bring about change in a non-violent manner in the famous Selma to Montgomery march.

It is this leadership that the museum is hoping to cultivate in young minds all across the country.

"In particular, we hope to inspire the next generation to become empowered, contributing, and caring citizens," said Sweeney.

According to a press release, the top prize in this contest is $5,000, but there will be 10 prizes given away, and the top 3 finalists will be flown to Philadelphia for a two day awards ceremony in mid-April.

All students enrolled in high school in the United States and its territories are encouraged to enter the contest. The deadline for submissions is February 15th. More information about the National Liberty Museum and the contest itself can be found here.

As of right now, Sweeney said, they have received over 150 entries, but that number is increasing faster and faster every day.

The contest has truly become a nationwide event. The museum has received submissions from 30 states, including California, Texas, and Georgia, where King once entered and won a speech contest very similar to this one. The ideas he focused on in this speech were inspiration for his "I Have a Dream" speech.

"The film really inspires young people to take a stand, to contribute and keep liberty strong in our country in constructive ways," Sweeney said. "We hope that our future leaders realize the power of their words and will use them to make a positive difference moving forward."

Firefighters rescued a family that was stuck inside their home after an excavator accidentally struck their house.

Three adults, five children, two dogs and two cats were inside a home on 654 North 36th Street Wednesday afternoon. Licenses and Inspections officials say a company was demolishing a home next door on 656 North 36th Street that was on the city's imminently dangerous list, which means it was in danger of collapsing.

During the demolition, a machine operator accidentally hit the wall of the home on 654 North 36th while cleaning up debris, shifting the foundation of the house, officials said.

"He hit the side of the home," said Ron Harris, a neighbor who witnessed the accident. "The front of the home started to buckle out and bricks started to fall. He then took the bulldozer, went to the front of the home and tried to push the bricks back."

The front door of the home was damaged and the family was trapped inside. Responding firefighters were able to get the residents out through a window. No one was hurt during the incident and all repairs to the home will be completed by Thursday night.

The Red Cross will assist the family until they're allowed to return home.

Mom Arrested in Child's Theft

Police say they've arrested a pregnant New Jersey mother accused of having her 4-year-old child steal a woman's wallet from a shopping cart at a Target store earlier this month.

The 24-year-old New Brunswick woman was captured carrying out the theft with her child at the Route 1 store in South Brunswick on Jan. 10, police said. Police reviewed surveillance video after a customer called to report her purse had been stolen from her shopping cart, and saw a child around the age of 5 pluck it from the cart and hand it to her mother.

Authorities said they believed the mother bumped the victim's cart away as the victim looked at greeting cards; the little girl then walked up to the victim's cart and grabbed the Louis Vuitton wallet, leaving behind two DVDs.

The child then walked toward her mother, who took the wallet, and the mother then walked to another woman, the video shows. Both women then walked out of the store with two children behind them, police said the video shows. They left their shopping carts in the aisle.

Police said the victim's credit cards were used at nearby Quaker Bridge Mall a short time after the theft. About $40 were in the wallet, which was valued at more than $1,000.

Nygeria Dixon, who is eight months pregnant, is being held on $120,000 bail at Middlesex County Jail, police said. Attorney information wasn't immediately available.

Police are still looking for the second woman with whom the mother was seen leaving the store.
