Burglars Hit Main Line Homes as Residents Sleep

Three families woke up Monday morning and discovered their suburban Philadelphia homes had been burglarized.

"Burglary is bad enough, but to know you were in there with loved ones is an added concern," said Radnor Township Police Department Lt. Christopher Flanagan.

The three burglaries happened in the Garrett Hill/Rosemont section of Radnor Township between 10 p.m. Sunday and 6 a.m. Monday, he said.

The suspect or group of suspects entered homes on the 100 block of Barcladen Road, the 200 block of Rockingham Road and the unit block of Garrett Avenue through unsecured doors or windows, according to police.

Investigators said they believe the Bryn Mawr homes were burglarized by the same person or group, but are unsure why these homes -- each a short distance apart -- were targeted.

"We're trying to put those pieces together," Flanagan said. "To see what is the common denominator there."

Computers, handbags and other household items were taken from each residence, he said.

Anyone with information about the crimes is urged to contact Radnor Township Police at 610-688-5600.

Meanwhile Flanagan urged residents to make sure all their doors and windows are locked, and their alarm systems are engaged.

He also warned community members not to get involved in a physical altercation should they discover a burglar in their home.

A University of Delaware football player is accused of attacking three other college students during a party.

Roman Tatum, 21, is charged with assault, criminal trespass and criminal mischief.

On Saturday around 11:30 p.m., police responded to a large fight inside an apartment complex on Center Street in Newark, Delaware. When they arrived they spotted a large crowd leaving the area and were then approached by three University of Delaware students. The students claimed they had been assaulted by Tatum, a defense back on the University of Delaware football team.

Two of the students, both 20-year-old men, suffered minor injuries while a 22-year-old student’s top front teeth were dislocated.

The men told police Tatum attacked them after they asked him to leave the party. Tatum was not in the area when police arrived, according to investigators.

On Sunday, Tatum surrendered to police and was released after posting $1,100 secured bond.

Host Says He Was Attacked by AC Police

A host at the Atlantic City boat show filed a complaint against a police officer who he says attacked him and unjustly arrested him. Aaron Bland recorded the incident and posted it online, including the Atlantic City Police Department’s Facebook page.

“We’re in here supporting the town’s economy and we can’t even walk to the store,” Bland said. “It’s ridiculous.”

Bland, who is from Maryland, told NBC10 the incident occurred Saturday around 9:30 p.m. after he had worked as an emcee at the boat show. Bland said he and his co-worker Meg Jones were walking on Atlantic Avenue near Tropicana when he was approached by an officer who told him he looked like someone she was looking for.

“I’m like, ‘I don’t look like anyone that has anything to do with you,’” Bland said. “That’s when I reach in my pocket, pull out my phone, unlock it to start recording. That’s when she grabbed me and started hitting me.”

It’s difficult to see what’s actually happening in Bland’s video though he is heard repeatedly telling the officer he didn’t do anything wrong while Jones screams for her to stop.

“Get off of me!” Bland screams in the recording. “Stop touching me! I didn’t do nothing! I didn’t do anything! You have no right to touch me!”

Bland and Jones told NBC10 more officers soon arrived.

“They tackled him to the ground,” Jones said. “They had their knees in his throat. They’re restraining him very, very aggressively.”

Atlantic City Police Chief Henry White told NBC10 Bland refused to cooperate with the officer who stopped him, pushed her and ran away. White also said Bland was taken into custody and charged with resisting arrest and obstruction of justice.

“What could I possibly be obstructing if I didn’t do anything in the first place to be under arrest to resist arrest for?” Bland asked.

Bland denied pushing the officer and insisted he was backing away the entire time. He also said he suffered several scrapes after the confrontation.

In a complaint he filed with the police department, Bland said he was beaten without provocation. Chief White however doesn’t believe his officers did anything wrong and claimed there wouldn’t have been an incident if Bland had cooperated in the first place.

“If I can’t walk down the street then it’s a problem,” Bland said.

Chief White told NBC10 Bland’s complaint will be investigated by the department’s Internal Affairs unit which is standard practice for all matters in which officers are involved.

Sightings of Lost Dog Give Bucks County Family Hope

$

The gentle yet skittish Lily, an Australian shepherd, was spotted last week in Bucks County, more than 15 miles from where she went missing in September 2013 and only days after her owners lost their other pup to a brain tumor.

"I'm fully aware of the possibility that I might never see Lily again, but I know if I don't keep looking I'll certainly never see her again," " said Lily's owner, Susan Reichlin, of Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania. "Until I have proof that she is not still alive, I won't stop looking."

Lily went missing 16 months ago while on a Stockton, New Jersey farm with Reichlin and her husband, Peter, she said.

The dog owners focused their search on the Stockton area for several months, but a sighting in Solebury Township led the Reichlins to shift focus to Bucks County in November 2013.

Nine more reports came in over the next year-and-a-half -- nearly all indicating the 16-year-old dog has been following the north branch of Neshaminy Creek, Reichlin said.

The most recent sighting was in Plumstead Township, not far from Ralph Stover State Park.

"We got her when she was about 2-years-old," Reichlin said. "We drove to South Carolina and fell in love with her and for 13 years we were together."

Along with Lily, the couple had another Australian shepherd, Kippie, until she passed away last Friday.

"I've never seen two dogs as close as those two," Reichlin said. "They stick to you like Velcro."

The dog-less house has made the couple even more determined to find their "Aussie," who they describe as devoted and affectionate.

Her color is blue merle -- meaning she has patches of black, white and gray, although her coat may appear slightly different after so many months outdoors. She weighs approximately 30 pounds and stands about 16 inches tall.

The breed -- an intelligent, working dog with a heavy coat-- is considered resourceful, according to the Australian Shepher Club of America. The combination makes it possible for Lily to have survived in the Bucks County woods all this time.

The couple created a Bring Lily Home Facebook page to draw more attention to their missing pup -- asking for Bucks County residents to keep an eye out for dog prints in the snow or mud -- and even enlisted the help of tracking dogs.

"We tore up a towel that Lilly used to sleep on and put it in plastic bags," Reichlin said.

None of their efforts have brought their beloved canine home, so they continue to ask for the public's help.

Instead of trying to lure Lily -- Australian shepherd's can be skittish around strangers, Reichlin asks anyone who spots her to try to snap a photograph and then contact her.

"Getting a picture of her would be the number one thing to do," she said. "Then we would get over there and we'd set out food and a camera and a trap."

Hundreds of Tax Returns Found in Street

The IRS has launched an investigation after tax returns for hundreds of people were found in the middle of a Philadelphia street.

Yvette Santiago told NBC10 her husband spotted hundreds of papers in the street outside their home on the 1900 block of East Cheltenham Avenue Saturday morning.

“He thought it was garbage,” Santiago said. “But then he said, ‘Oh my God, look!’”

What he initially believed was trash was actually tax returns full of personal information.

“You have the name, social security and date of birth,” Santiago said.

Santiago showed the documents to NBC10’s Christine Maddela who took them to local accountant Michael Falco. Falco told NBC10 the documents were actual tax returns, showing where people work, their income and even information about their children.

“For the people who have documents here this could turn into a nightmare,” he said. “I’ve never seen anything like this before. This is unbelievable."

Falco, a former FBI agent who specialized as an accounting technician and has done thousands of tax returns, said he immediately noticed several suspicious things about the documents. The most glaring being the fact that several different names were filing from the same address.

"That's a red flag," Falco said. "That's typical fraud."

NBC10 reached out to two of the companies listed as the tax preparer on the documents, one based in Philadelphia and another based in Massachusetts. Spokespeople for both companies said they never filed the returns and didn't even have any clients by the names that were listed. NBC10 also reached out to the employers listed on the documents and were told that the people listed did not work for them.

"The fact that it's so early in the filing season and we see these, that's another clue that there could be fraud because as I said, if people are going to file a fraudulent return, they want to do it as soon as possible so they do it before the legitimate person does it," Falco said.

Last year the IRS paid out over $5 billion in fraudulent refunds, according to Falco.

An official with the IRS picked up the documents from NBC10 Monday night. They are currently investigating.

Coach Resigns Amid Smear Campaign Allegations

A Bucks County Catholic high school coach resigned after he was accused of running a smear campaign against a rival team’s stars.

An article on PhillyVoice.com accused John Gallagher, the girl’s basketball coach at Archbishop Wood High School, of spreading rumors about two star players at rival Neumann-Goretti, the number one ranked girl’s high school basketball team in the country.

Gallagher allegedly sent anonymous emails to college recruiters about Neumann-Goretti High School Senior Forward Christina Aborowa and her teammate Felicia Aiyeotan, both from Nigeria. The emails allegedly accused them of being illegal immigrants who lied about their ages in order to play. Aborowa signed a letter of intent to play at the University of Texas.
After PhillyVoice.com reported it, the story was circulated in several other publications, including Deadspin. Gallagher resigned Monday amid the allegations.
The Archdiocese of Philadelphia did not confirm the allegations against Gallagher. A spokesperson stood by Aborowa and Aiyeotan however.
“Any student from a foreign country playing on any sports team in an Archdiocesan school would be of the appropriate age and in the country legally,” the spokesperson said.
The two girls are staying in the United States with a host parent who lives in Manayunk.
NBC10 reached out to Gallagher for comment but have not yet heard back from him.
