Cats Burned to Death Outside Elementary School

The gruesome deaths of a cat and three kittens near a South Jersey Elementary School have sparked a police investigation.

On Monday, a teacher at Washington Avenue Elementary School in Pleasantville, New Jersey found the dead animals in the staff parking lot. According to police, the cats had been burned to death, though they’re not exactly sure when.

“Staff had been reporting the smell for a week,” said Pleasantville Police Ptl. Rob D’Arcangelo. “They assumed it was the dumpsters, which is in close proximity.”

School officials are currently looking through a surveillance camera near the area to see if the incident was recorded.

“We don’t want people associating animal cruelty with the school,” said Tim Newkirk, a teacher at Washington Avenue. “I can tell you the teachers in this school donate a lot of money to animal shelters and things like that.”

This isn’t the only incident of animal cruelty near the school. Last year a burned, dead dog was found in the same area. That case remains unsolved. Officials are investigating whether the two cases are related.

If you have any information on either incident, please call Pleasantville Police or the Atlantic County SPCA.

Mo'ne Davis "Throws Like a Girl" in New Ad

Philadelphia’s Little League superstar Mo’ne Davis isn’t old enough to drive but she is already pitching for a major American car maker.

The Taney Dragons star stars in a new Chevrolet ad that debuted during a commercial break of Game 1 of the World Series Tuesday night.

“Dear United States of America, I’m 13 years old and this summer was the best summer of my whole life,” starts the ad directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Spike Lee.

The commercial, filmed in various spots in Philadelphia’s Graduate Hospital neighborhood including Lazarro’s Pizza on South Street and the Marian Anderson Recreation Center at 17th and Bainbridge streets, then continues with Mo’ne talking about her passion for sports.

Instead of wearing the Taney Dragons uniform she wore during her team’s run to the Little League World Series -- the uniform she wore while becoming the first Little Leaguer to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated -- Mo'ne wears an Anderson Monarchs uniform in the Chevy ad.

“The best part was having my family behind me supporting me through everything I did,” Mo’ne says before draining a half-court basketball shot.

“I have a passion for sports. Every day of the week I’m playing soccer, basketball or baseball.”

Besides the 60-second ad, a more than 16-minute mini-movie by Lee titled “Throw Like a Girl” appeared on Chevy’s website.

“I stand for girls who want to play sports with the boys and to be a role model for people young and old,” Mo’ne says. “I throw 70 mph and that’s ‘throwing like a girl!’”

The ad ends with Mo’ne signing off, “sincerely, your daughter, Mo’ne Davis.”

Before Chevy’s iconic logo appears on the white screen, the words “Chevrolet celebrates Mo’ne Davis and those who remind us that anything is possible.”

The ad was met with criticism because Mo’ne’s heroics didn’t lift her Taney Dragons to Little League World Series glory and there are boys her same age who also throw 70 mph or harder.

But plenty of others -- including actress Holly Robinson Peete, the wife of former Philadelphia Eagles quaterback Rodney Peete -- showed support for Mo’ne.

Any concerns of Mo’Ne’s role as spokesperson costing her a shot at her dream of playing NCAA basketball were squashed Wednesday.

“Mo’Ne Davis may be paid for appearing in the Chevy commercial without impacting her NCAA eligibility,” NCAA spokeswoman Emily James told ESPN W.

An alleged “Bonnie and Clyde” couple was arrested Monday after an armed robbery led to a shooting in Upper Dublin Township, according to police.

On Monday around 5:13 a.m., police responded to a reported armed robbery at the Rite Aid Pharmacy on the 1200 block of Bethlehem Pike in Upper Dublin Township. According to investigators, a man and a woman entered the store and at least one of them pointed a weapon at an employee while handing over a note demanding drugs. They then allegedly stole several pill bottles before fleeing the scene on foot.

As they fled, a shot was fired from their weapon but no employees were hurt, according to police.

Upper Dublin Police, Montgomery County Detectives and Horsham Township Police all joined in the search for the suspects, who were later identified as William Carpenter, 33, and his wife, 34-year-old Tanitra Thompson Carpenter, both of Horsham Township.

Investigators found the couple at the Residence Inn in Horsham Township. During the arrest, police discovered Tanitra Carpenter had a gunshot wound to her right calf. She was taken to Abington Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Police have not yet revealed the specific charges against the couple.

Is This Halloween Decoration Too Disturbing?

$

Scary decorations have always been an essential part of Halloween. Yet some residents of a South Jersey community believe one woman took things too far when she put up a display of baby dolls hanging from a rope.

Merry Krueger of Bellmawr, New Jersey, insists her decorations, which her children helped her put up, are all in good fun and in the spirit of the holiday.

“This is our favorite holiday and we decorate every single year,” Krueger said. “We repurposed old dolls instead of throwing them out. Apparently everyone has a problem with that.”

The display outside Krueger’s Wilson Avenue home features three baby dolls covered in fake blood while hanging from nooses. Some of her neighbors, including Toni Flaherty, believe the decorations are too disturbing.

“I just think they could’ve done without those baby dolls hanging because it’s frightening to children,” Flaherty said.

Krueger told NBC10 she doesn’t understand the controversy however.

“I just don’t know why baby dolls covered in sharpie is a bad thing,” she said.

Krueger said the dolls have been up for three weeks and she hasn’t heard any complaints until recently.

“It’s just ridiculous to be honest,” she said.

Krueger admits her decorations are different from others being displayed on her block. She also told NBC10 she would have taken the dolls down if her neighbors had simply went up to her and asked. Now however, despite the negative feedback, Krueger won't take them down until Halloween is over.

ACT Tests Missing for 182 Students

For high school students across the country, the college application process is stressful enough as it is. Yet nearly 200 local students have even more to worry about after tests critical to their applications suddenly vanished.

On September 13, 182 high school students took the ACT test at Upper Darby High School. Over a month later, those students are still waiting for their results. An ACT spokesperson told NBC10 a testing coordinator didn’t follow procedure when mailing the tests out. According to the spokesman, the coordinator sent the tests through the U.S. Postal Service instead of FedEx, as he or she should have done. As a result, the tests are missing.

Rose Gendelman, senior and student council president at Friends' Central School, spent five months preparing for the test.  Without her ACT score, Gendelman feels her chances of getting into the college of her choice for early admission are now in jeopardy.

“It’s just really, really frustrating,” Rose said. “Why did this have to happen?

Her parents are upset as well.

“On top of, you know, the teenage stress and all the drama, it’s a hard couple months and on top of this now, I don’t know what to say,” said Rose’s mother, Christine McGinley..

Rose’s parents told NBC10 they still haven't heard from the ACT organization about what happened to the tests.

“It’s a reputable organization that’s supposed to adhere to a certain code of conduct and they didn’t do it,” said Rose’s father Rich Gendelman.

The affected students will have the chance to retake the test at no cost, according to ACT spokesman Ed Colby. The organization expects to notify students with the details by the end of the week. The company will also provide a letter for students to submit with their college applications to explain why their test scores are incomplete.

As for the location of the missing tests, the ACT continues to investigate. Colby said Upper Darby school district administrators have been to the post office several times to look for the missing tests.

"This is very unfortunate, and very rare," Colby said.

The ACT organization is hopeful, Colby said, that the tests will eventually show up.

Man Mistaken for Trooper Killer Suspect 20 Times

A northeastern Pennsylvania resident said he's been stopped and questioned more than 20 times by authorities who have mistaken him for a man sought in the killing of a state trooper, including one encounter at gunpoint that left him fearing for his life.

James Tully, 39, of Canadensis, said he wears his ID prominently around his neck as he walks to work each day through the wooded area where authorities are looking for Eric Frein. Nevertheless, he said he was once stopped about seven times in a single day.

"I'm worried about what is going to happen with the next one," Tully told the Pocono Record. "Is he going to shoot first and ask questions later?"

Trooper Tom Kelly, a state police spokesman, said Thursday the agency will investigate any formal complaint about alleged mistreatment. No such complaint has been filed, Kelly said.

Police have been searching for Frein in the woods around Canadensis since an ambush outside their barracks Sept. 12 left one state trooper dead and another seriously wounded. Authorities describe Frein, who grew up in the area, as a self-taught survivalist and expert marksman who hates law enforcement.

Not many people travel by foot in the rural region, which is filled with winding two-lane roads. Tully, a father of two, said he walks five miles each way to his job at a metal manufacturing company because he doesn't own a car. He carries a backpack, which police believe Frein has also done.

On Oct. 17, Tully said he was walking home when a driver in tactical gear pulled over, pointed a rifle at him and forced him down on the ground, putting a knee in his back. Tully said the man never identified himself, but let him go after another officer appeared and vouched for Tully.

"This guy apparently had delusions of grandeur that he would be the one to catch Frein," said Tully's father, Bob Tully. "We completely commiserate with the police, but this guy went full commando on my son."

James Tully said he went to the hospital and was diagnosed with bruised ribs. He now wears a reflective vest that he hopes will help identify him as someone not trying to hide from police.

"The one they're hunting for, he's not going to stand out. He's going to try and blend in," Tully told WNEP-TV. "I want to stand out so I can let them know ... I'm not the one they're looking for. Just let me go on my way."

A woman created a GoFundMe crowdfunding account to buy Tully a car and had raised more than $7,800 by Thursday afternoon.

Lady Liberty to Don Halloween Costume: Report

This year, even the Statue of Liberty will be getting dressed up for Halloween, according to USA Today.

The newspaper reports that Joe Boxer founder Nick Graham is planning to fly vividly colored 60-foot-wide bow ties hanging from helicopters in front of Lady Liberty beginning 8 a.m. Oct. 31 to mark the launch of an eponymous menswear brand.

The bow ties, one black and one white, will pass about 1,000 feet in front of the statue to create the illusion that the monument is wearing the neck wear.

"It's going to be a big collection, so what better way to launch it than the Statue of Liberty," Graham told USA Today.

Two ties will pass in front of the statue for several hours before heading up the Hudson River.

Graham said the stunt hasn’t been approved yet by the FAA.

The National Park Service said it is aware of the plans, but wouldn’t have any say about the flyby since the helicopters won’t pass directly over Liberty Island.
