Hikers Warned Before Bear Attack

The group of hikers who encountered a black bear in a New Jersey nature preserve last month before one of them was attacked and killed had been warned about the bear by another pair of hikers, police say.

West Milford police had been looking to speak with the couple after the deadly bear attack on 22-year-old Darsh Patel, a Rutgers student, on Sept. 21.

The couple told police they were hiking for several hours when the woman noticed the 300-pound black bear following them. The bear stayed about 30 to 40 yards away and followed them for about 10 minutes.

The couple then met Patel and his friends on the trail and told them about the bear and warned them not to proceed, police said.

The group apparently decided to continue on their original path, and a short time later, they saw the bear, police said. Several of the hikers took pictures with their cellphones from what they felt was a safe distance -- until the bear began to advance on them.

The men decided to turn back and as they walked, the bear followed and quickly closed the distance on them, police said. Both the hikers and the bear sped up and eventually started running.

The group of friends ran for several minutes before they got separated. They eventually regrouped and noticed Patel was missing.

Recordings of the 911 calls after the bear attack captured Patel's friends' panic.

A necropsy conducted on the bear found it did not have rabies, according to a report released by the DEP Tuesday. Test results also found it had bits of human tissue, hair and clothing in its stomach.

An incident report filed by DEP officers also revealed that Patel's pants, phone and socks were found near his body, stuck to the briars. The cellphone had a puncture mark on the front screen.

The bear would not leave the area, even after officers tried to scare it away by making loud noises and throwing sticks and stones, and it eventually was killed with two rifle blasts. Authorities said it was 4 years old.

State and local officials have stressed that bear attacks are rare even in a region of the state that may have as many as 2,400 bruins in its dense forests. They said the attack was the first fatal bear-human encounter on record in New Jersey.

Rutgers said in a statement that Patel was a senior in the School of Arts and Sciences majoring in information technology and informatics. Patel's family has asked for privacy.

"I Have Ebola": Passenger Causes Scare on Philly Flight

A man on a flight that left Philadelphia for an island paradise triggered a caught-on-camera Ebola scare on his plane when he reportedly sneezed and said, "I have Ebola."

US Airways Flight 845 left Philadelphia en route to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, just after 10 a.m. Wednesday. When it arrived shortly after 1 p.m. local time, passengers were told to stay on the plane as crews in hazmat suits came onto the aircraft.

The flight "was met yesterday by local officials upon landing due to a possible health issue on board," US Air said in a statement afterward.

"We are following the direction of, and strictly adhering to, all Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines in place for airlines in response to the Ebola virus," the airline added.

An unidentified 54-year-old man had allegedly said "I have Ebola, you are all screwed," Dominican newspaper Diario Libre reported.

That led to the hazmat suit-clad workers boarding the plane, in a moment captured on passenger video.

"I think the man who said this is an idiot," said a flight attendant addressing passengers shortly before the workers came on board.

the whole thing appeared to be a prank. US Air said the flight was checked, and vacationers were allowed to go on their way.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, but the safety of our customers and employees is our first priority," the airline added.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether the passenger, who according to reports had no history of travel to Ebola-stricken parts of West Africa, was charged.

New Jersey Lawmakers Consider Paid Sick Leave

$

New Jersey lawmakers' push to require employers to offer paid sick leave -- an effort gaining momentum across the state -- attracted a standing-room-only crowd at a committee hearing Thursday and touched off an hourslong debate after a vote was postponed.

Labor and trade associations spoke in favor of the bill, arguing that low-wage workers face economic hardships when they take off from work due to sickness but do not get paid.

"An earned sick day standard will boost our state's working families' economic and personal health," Phyllis Salowe-Kaye, executive director of the labor-aligned NJ Citizen Action group, said in a statement.

Employers' organizations, including the New Jersey Restaurant Association, support the idea of paid sick leave but suggested amending the bill to prevent workers from exploiting such a system.

Others, such as like the right-leaning advocacy group Americans for Prosperity, oppose the measure, saying it would drive up costs for employers and stifle competition.

"It is not that AFP is against (the concept). We are against the mandate of it. It is mandates like these that make me question opening a business of my own in New Jersey," said Danielle Cyr of the New Jersey branch of AFP.

Under the current proposal, workers would be entitled to one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours they work. They could accrue up to 40 hours -- or five days for full-time employees of small employers -- and up to 72 hours for large employers.

The committee had planned to vote on the measure Thursday, but decided at the last minute only to hear testimony, said Democratic Assemblywoman Pamela Lampitt, after several stakeholders suggested amendments. The Senate has not yet taken up the measure.

A handful of New Jersey towns, including Newark and Jersey City, have similar local laws. Measures for additional ones are on the ballot next month in Montclair and Trenton.
