A man was shot by police officers after he allegedly tried to run them over with a car in Southwest Philadelphia.

Officials say police officers with the 12th District were investigating a report of a stolen motorcycle around 5:20 p.m. on Elmwood and Island Avenues. According to police, the owner of the motorcycle was trying to buy it back from the two men who stole it.

The two suspects, a 30-year-old man and a 27-year-old man were inside a red Ford when officers arrived, according to investigators. While the officers were apprehending the driver, the passenger allegedly moved to the driver seat and drove towards the officers in an attempt to run them down.

Officials say an officer then fired his weapon, striking the passenger side window. The suspect then continued driving away from the scene, according to police.

Officials say the vehicle was recovered at a short time later at 56th and Wheeler Streets while the suspect was found with a gunshot wound to the right arm. He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he is currently in stable condition. The other suspect was taken into police custody.

Officials have not yet identified the suspects or revealed the specific charges against them. No police officers were injured during the incident.

Officials with Internal Affairs are currently investigating the shooting. The officer who opened fire is currently on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.

Funeral Set for 4 Children Killed in Gesner Blaze

The four children killed in the massive Gesner Street fire earlier this month will soon be laid to rest.

The funeral for 4-year-old twins Maria and Marialla Bowah and brothers 4-year-old Patrick Sanyeah and 7-week-old Taj Jacque will take place August 16, Able Dennis, a Bowah family member, tells NBC10.com.

The two families have decided to hold one funeral for all four children. The will take place at First Baptist Church of Paschall, 2210 South 71 St. at 10 a.m. and is open to the public, according to Dahn Dennis of the Liberian Association of Pennsylvania.

The children were killed in the early morning hours of July 5. Dewen "Marie" Bowah was home with her five children and babysitting the two boys when a fire broke out about 2:30 a.m. Bowah was able to help her three oldest children escape through a second floor window, which she also used to get out of the house alive. She was not able to reach the youngest kids who were sleeping in a separate room where they perished.

Numerous in-kind funeral donations have poured in to cover the funeral costs. Patricia Quinn of Final Farewell has lead the effort. Antoine Turay of Turay Memorial Funeral Chapel estimates the discounted cost for funeral services and burials is $10,000.

"It’s very sad, but I’m glad to know that I can at least help out and ease their financial burden so they can get on with their life as best they can. Pretty much all the funeral expenses have been covered," said Quinn of Guckin Funeral Mansion.

As for why the funeral date took so long to be finalized, Turay said in West African cultures it is not uncommon for a funeral to take place 30 days after a death.

Woman Choked With Rope During Afternoon Attack: Police

A man is facing attempted murder charges after he allegedly attacked a woman in broad daylight and tried to strangle her with a rope.

Corrine McDonald, 29, who lived in Philadelphia for four years but recently moved back to upstate New York, was visiting friends Wednesday afternoon in University City. She was walking along 45th and Larchwood Streets around 1 p.m. to grab a cup of coffee.

As she was walking, police say a man, identified as 33-year-old Andre Taylor, approached her from behind, put a rope around her neck and started to choke her.

"I felt something come around my neck and constrict it," McDonald said. "He had put a rope around my neck and was pulling it with both hands."

Taylor allegedly dragged McDonald into an alleyway. That's when McDonald says she fought back as her adrenaline kicked in.

"I had this moment of fear but there is no option but to fight," McDonald said. "I yelled and he tried to stop me from yelling. He reached out and grabbed me by the throat with his hand because he must have dropped the rope."

As she struggled with the suspect, two undercover police officers who happened to be on patrol at the time spotted McDonald, ran to her rescue and apprehended Taylor, according to investigators.

Police say that Taylor, who was recently released from prison and was wanted for violating his parole for robbery, is also responsible for another attack earlier this week.

"We do have another job similar to this on Sunday around the same time," said Philadelphia Police Lieutenant John Walker. "We think he may have been in that area just looking for victims."

During the Sunday incident, Taylor allegedly attacked another woman from behind and used her headphones to choke her before fleeing the scene with seven dollars.

McDonald says she's still shaken by the terrifying ordeal but happy that it ended with Taylor's arrest.

"It was a traumatic event," McDonald said. "I'm glad that it happened in a way which means that he was apprehended. Now this man is not on the streets."

Taylor was taken into custody and charged with attempted murder, robbery, aggravated assault, simple assault and other related offenses. Sources close to the investigation tell NBC10 that he confessed to his crimes.

Bittersweet Homecoming for Carjacking Crash Victim

It was a bittersweet homecoming for 65-year-old Thelma Brown on Wednesday. Still recovering from her injuries, Brown sat on the porch outside her North Philadelphia home as hundreds of people gathered outside to wish her well.

"I never thought there would be so many people," Brown said.

Brown was released from the hospital several days after she was hurt during a carjacking hit-and-run that killed three children.

Brown is a family friend and neighbor of 34-year-old Keisha Williams. Williams' three children Joseph Thomas Reed, 10, Keiearra Williams, 15, and Terrence Moore, 7, were struck and killed Friday when a carjacked SUV plowed into a fruit stand where they were volunteering on a street corner on Germantown and Allegheny Avenues.

"Where the girls were standing and the boy, I was standing there too," Brown said. "I remember the car hitting me and I'm going up in the air. And I said, 'oh my God.'"

Keisha Williams was critically injured in the crash. A woman who police say was sexually assaulted by the carjacking suspects was also hurt after her vehicle slammed into a tree.

Brown suffered a broken ankle and bruised sternum. As she mourns the loss of her three young neighbors, she's also dealing with her anger towards the men allegedly responsible. The two suspects in the deadly carjacking and crash - Cornelius Crawford, 23, and Jonathan Rosa, 19 - were charged Monday with second-degree murder, robbery, carjacking, sexual assault and other offenses. On Tuesday investigators revealed that Rosa's own mother brought her son back to police after they questioned and released him earlier in the weekend.

"It hurts me that they would do this and run," Brown said. "There's no hope for them whatsoever."

Brown says she will need months of physical therapy to get back on her feet. Keisha Williams, meanwhile, remains in intensive care but continues to slowly recover.

"She's awake, she's responsive and she's going in the right direction," said Williams' cousin Stephanie Alexander. "All we want to do is bring her home."

Family members say Williams still has not been told about what happened to her children.

The memorial for the young victims at the site of the crash continues to grow with flowers, handwritten messages and stuffed toys. A fundraiser is also being planned this Saturday for Williams and her family.

Family members also confirmed that the funeral for the children will take place on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Seventh Day Adventist Church at 16th and Oxford Streets. Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams also announced that NBA legend and former Philadelphia 76er Charles Barkley offered to pay for the funeral expenses.

Gary Edwards, 45, of Philadelphia surrendered to Upper Darby Police around 9 a.m.

Upper Darby Police told NBC10 that the 47-year-old victim was ordering a hoagie from the digital kiosk inside the store on 69th Street near Patterson Avenue around 5:20 p.m. on Monday when Edwards approached him and accused him of checking out his daughter.

Gunfire Erupts During Armed Robbery, Newark Cop Shot

A Newark police officer was shot in the leg during a dramatic confrontation with an armed robber inside a convenience store Wednesday afternoon, officials and witnesses say.

Employees at the bodega near Clinton Avenue and Stratford Place said the suspect entered the store at about 3 p.m., ordered everyone to get on the floor and demanded money.

One employee, James Harris, ran out, locked the suspect inside the store and flagged down a police officer passing by. That appeared to set the gunman off, according to Harris.

"He was coming towards the door, pointing the gun at the door at me, but he didn't know the officer was right there," said Harris. "So I stepped to the side and the officer stepped in front and told him to drop the gun."

Witnesses who were in the store at the time said the suspect ignored warnings from the officer to drop the gun and fired at the officer. The officer then fired twice at the suspect.

"The guy wouldn't give up," witness Lloyd Darby said of the robber. "He wanted to kill."

Store employees helped care for the officer until help arrived and were praised by Mayor Ras Baraka.

"The civilians, the residents in this area, we want to thank them," he said. "They helped apprehend the gentleman who was robbing the establishment."

The unidentified officer, a 19-year veteran of the force, is in good condition.

"He's doing good," said Baraka. "He's going to be OK."

Store employees said the officer is known and well-liked in the neighborhood.

"He's a good officer, a stand-up officer," said Lloyd.

The suspect was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. He's expected to face charges.

"I want to go to there."

One of the catch phrases coined by "30 Rock" character Liz Lemon is likely to be muttered by comedy fans across the Delaware Valley after learning Tina Fey is returning to Delaware County in just a few weeks.

The "Saturday Night Live" alum will appear at the Upper Darby Summer Stage at 601 N. Lansdowne Ave., Drexel Hill Aug. 16, according to a news release from the local theater.

"Before the Emmy Award-winning actress, comedian, producer and writer became a household name, Tina Fey acted, directed, ushered and worked in the box office at Upper Darby Summer Stage," said Harry Dietzler, the theater's executive director.

Her appearance will kick-off Upper Darby Summer Stage's 40th season and serve as a fundraiser.

Ticket prices range from $40 to $100 for the event, which will include a 10th anniversary screening of "Mean Girls."

After the movie, another Summer Stage alum, TV Guide Magazine's Damian Holbrook, will lead a question-and-answer session with Fey.

Funds raised for the event will go towards the purchase of a new sound system for the Upper Darby Performing Arts Center, according to Dietzler.

Fey, who grew up in Upper Darby Township and attended Upper Darby High School before she rose to fame, drew attention to her hometown earlier this year when she shared pizza from Pica's on the "Tonight Show."

Anyone interested in attending Fey's homecoming at the Upper Darby Summer Stage can purchase tickets online or by calling the box office at 610-622-1189.

Police in New Jersey are investigating another rash of luxury car thefts they say were entirely preventable.

The bold thieves in Paramus are stealing cars from victims' homes, checking for cars that are unlocked and have the keys still inside -- particularly the valet key in the glove box, which is all a thief needs, police tell The Record

Nine luxury cars have been stolen in Paramus since January, three of them in the last two weeks, police say. Those three vehicles were all 2013 and 2014 models.

The burglars are also striking victims in public, stealing cars at coffee shops when people leave their cars to quickly dash inside.

It's not the first time organized car thieves have targeted Bergen County. Five months ago, authorities broke up an international ring that took 160 luxury cars with plans to ship them to Africa.
