Two men were rescued after their single engine plane crashed near the Delaware River on Saturday.

The NC Air Traffic Control Tower at the New Castle County Airport reported Saturday, around 10:45 a.m. ET, that it lost contact with a small aircraft.

State Police reported that the plane was located in the Delaware River in a muddy and marshy area between Fort Delaware State Park and Fort Mott State Park, New Jersey. However, SkyForce10 flew over the scene of the crash and showed that the aircraft had landed in a marsh near the water rather than in it.

Officials say two "older men" were spotted in the water near the plane.

A Delaware State Police helicopter arrived at the scene and rescued the two men. According to state police, their injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

A law enforcement source also told NBC10 that the men were covered in mud but appeared to be "okay." They walked on their own to an ambulance, according to the source.

A Pennsville Police lieutenant told NBC10 that the plane sustained some sort of power failure. The FAA is currently investigating the crash.

A 3-year-old girl is dead after an accident occurred at a Rita's Water Ice Saturday afternoon.

A security gate detached and came crashing down on the child shortly after 4 p.m. when she was standing outside a Rita's location at 2829 Girard Ave. in Philadelphia's Brewerytown neighborhood, according to reports.

An ambulance rushed the victim to Hahnemann University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 5:02 p.m., according to officials.

Police say the girl was with her mother attending a fundraising event for the Omega Psi Phi fraternity and the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority when the tragedy occurred.

Neighbors tell NBC10 issues with the gate's ability to lock to the frame have been apparent for some time.

Officials with Philadelphia's Licenses and Inspections arrived on the scene shortly after the deadly accident and shut down the Rita's. An investigation is underway.

Maintenance, care and inspections of roll down security gates are the responsibility of the property owner, according to City of Philadelphia property codes.

Property records list P&G Development as the owner. Attempts to reach P&G were unsuccessful.

L&I officials say they inspect these gates if they receive a complaint of an apparent defect.

There are no open violations and there is no violation history related to the gate, according to L&I.

The Associated Press is reporting Rita's Italian Ice, the shop's parent company, has released a statement about the crash.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the child's family," said Linda Duke, Rita's spokeswoman. "Due to the current investigation we really cannot comment about the unfortunate incident."

16 Philly-Area Churches Hold Their Final Mass

$

The mood was bittersweet for parishioners at Notre Dame de Lourdes in Swarthmore on Saturday. It was supposed to be a celebration of the church's 55 year history. More often than not however it seemed like a night of mourning.

"It's not like we're going to mass," said Bob Lynch, one of the parishioners. "It's kind of like we're going to a funeral."

Notre Dame is one of 16 local churches that will hold their final mass on Sunday before closing for good on Monday.

Last year, the Archdiocese informed the public that 46 churches in Philadelphia, Bucks, Delaware, and Montgomery counties would undertake a program of self-study, known as the Parish Area Pastoral Planning Initiative, to determine if any of the parishes should merge together.

A committee -- made up of lay persons, priests and Archdiocesan personnel -- presented Archbishop Charles Chaput with three possible recommendations for each parish: to merge, to complete additional evaluations in the future or maintain their current structure and develop a plan for long-term sustainability.

Earlier this month, the Archdiocese announced the 16 parishes that would close.

"The mergers being announced are due to a number of factors including a shift in Catholic population, a high density of parishes in a small area, as well as declines in Mass attendance, Sacramental activity, the availability of priests to staff parishes, and a review of facilities," said Archdiocese spokesman Kenneth Gavin in a released statement. "In each instance of a merger, parishioners will attend daily and Sunday Mass at the church of the newly formed parish. The church(es) of the former parish(es) will become a worship site(es). Worship sites will be utilized for weddings, funerals and feast days, as well as traditional and ethnic devotions. Sunday Mass may also be celebrated at worship sites at the discretion of the pastor and the newly formed pastoral council and depending upon the availability of clergy."

Notre Dame de Lourdes will merge with Our Lady of Peace in Milmont Park.

"It's sad for every person that I know that's still in my parish who grew up here and who stayed here because of the camaraderie and the family-like atmosphere," said Karen Finelli, while on the verge of tears. "It's very sad."

Five of the parishes set to merge, including Notre Dame de Lourdes, filed appeals against the decision. The other parishes that appealed are Our Lady of Mount Carmel, St. John of the Cross, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Saint Ann.

The appeals are with Archbishop Chaput who will likely make a decision next month. Some parishioners have said they plan to take the appeal to the Vatican if its declined by Chaput. Since the parish mergers began in 2010, no appeals have ever been overturned.

Main Break Leads to Boil Water Advisory

$

A large water main break led to a boil water advisory and water conservation notice for two Bucks County communities.

The break occurred on a large pipe at the stream crossing behind the firehouse in the Sellersville Borough Sunday morning. The damaged pipe led to low levels in the town’s water storage tank, causing a significant loss of water pressure in the Sellersville distribution system.

Officials say a loss of positive water pressure could cause contamination to enter the distribution system. There is a chance the water may contain disease-causing organisms because of this.

Crews are currently repairing the break and expect to bring the system back to full pressure by Sunday afternoon. In the meantime, North Penn Water Authority(NPWA) customers in Sellersville and West Rockhill are advised to conserve water by only using it for essential purposes. Sellersville customers are also advised to boil their water first or to use bottled water for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth and food preparation.

For more safe drinking tips, call the Environmental Protection Agency’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.

Information on when the advisory and notice will be lifted can be found on the NPWA website. You can also contact them at 215-855-3617.

Pakistani Educational Advocate to be Honored in Philly

After writing a best-selling memoir, winning numerous awards, surviving an assassination attempt and becoming a global voice for educational empowerment, Malala Yousafzai has already accomplished more at the age of 16 than most people will in an entire lifetime. In October, she’ll add yet another amazing achievement to her list, when she becomes the youngest person ever to receive the Liberty Medal.

The National Constitution Center announced on Sunday that the Pakistani teen will be honored during the 26th annual Liberty Medal ceremony in Philadelphia.

The Liberty Medal is awarded to men and women who “strive to secure the blessings of liberty to people around the globe.” Past recipients include Muhammad Ali, Nelson Mandela, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

“It's an honor to be awarded the Liberty Medal,” Yousafzai said. “I accept this award on behalf of all the children around the world who are struggling to get an education.”

Yousafzai first gained fame at the age of 11 after writing for the BBC about life under the Taliban in her native Pakistan. Through her writings, she described her family’s struggle to gain education for young girls in her community.

Yousafzai’s outspokenness gained her plenty of supporters around the world as well as enemies. In October of 2012, she was shot in the head while returning from school on a bus in an assassination attempt by the Taliban.

Yousafzai survived the shooting and continued her educational advocacy. After the attack, Gordon Brown, the United Nations Special Envoy for Global Education, launched the Malala Petition which demanded that the UN recommit to Millennium Development Goal 2, which involves universal primary education for children around the world by the end of 2015.

The petition received more than three million signatures and helped Pakistan ratify the country’s Right to Education bill.

“Malala’s courageous fight for equality and liberty from tyranny is evidence that a passionate, committed leader, regardless of age, has the power to ignite a movement for reform,” said National Constitution Center Chairman Governor Jeb Bush. “Her story is truly inspirational as we continue to fight for all children to have access to a quality education here in America.  Let us all, young and old, strive to be like Malala—to challenge the status quo and to serve as catalysts for meaningful change.”

In addition to the Liberty Medal, Yousafzai was also the recipient of the 2013 United Nations Human Rights Prize as well as Pakistan’s National Youth Peace Prize. Her memoir, I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban, made the New York Times bestseller list. She also continues to fight for universal access to education through the Malala Fund, a nonprofit organization that empowers girls through education.

The Liberty Medal ceremony is set to take place on October 21, at 7 p.m. Tickets will be made available for the general public on September 23. Visit the Liberty Medal website for more information.

Man "Whitewashes" Beloved Kurt Vile Mural

A man armed with a paint brush roller and white paint defaced the beloved Kurt Vile mural in Fishtown yesterday. The damage to the Philly musician's mural was captured by a passerby who took to social media immediately.

Instagrammer Najeeb Sheikh posted that as he was driving along Front Street, he saw a man buffing the mural. "Sick to my stomach," Sheikh wrote. He asked the buffer why he was painting over the mural and the man responded he was tired of it attracting graffitti.

After Philly Magazine posted a story, the alleged buffer responded in the comments section of the online post and issued an apology.

"What I did yesterday was the most stupid and selfish thing I have ever done. I think I literally had a mental breakdown and lost my mind there," the buffer wrote.

Vile privately commissioned artist and Philly native Stephen "ESPO" Powers to create a mural for his "Wakin on a Pretty Daze" album. The mural is not associated with the thousands of murals created by the Mural Arts Program. The entire Vile mural creative process was filmed and became the storyline for one of the album's music videos.

It appears the buffer is DJ Lee Mayjahs. Philly journalist Leah Kauffman talked to Mayjahs and posted the interview on Facebook, including the troubled DJ's explanation for why he buffed. Mayjahs also told Kauffman that he issued an apology to Vile and Powers.

The apology was not sincere and acceptable, according to neighbor Conrad Benner.

"People love that mural. It combines two Philly things -- Vile and Powers -- and they have done well for themselves. We take pride in it," said Benner, a Fishtown blogger and photographer.

"If he (the buffer) had a problem, he should have talked to the city or business owner. There was a better way to handle it."

Vile took to Facebook to let his fans know he is working to have the work restored and posted: "Bummer of a day yesterday. The mural that was painted for the cover of Wakin' was defaced. We're all working on plans to have it redone and updated."
